Fr. Terry KeehanOur beautiful Cross of New life is a stunning invitation for so many. Perhaps we who see it so regularly might take it for granted be-cause it hovers above us constantly. I cer-tainly have seen and heard many powerful

reactions recently, at weddings and funerals, as visitors are taken in by the reverent invitation that comes from our cross, which is the largest piece of acrylic art in the world. We have artist Ernest Caballero and many founding parishioners to thank for bringing the Cross of New Life into our worship space and into our hearts and souls. A focus on this cross I believe is helpful, because we are in the midst of a fi ve week period of hearing from the letter of Paul to the Galatians as our second read-ing at Mass. When we think about the Epistles (letters with a spiritual or religious theme), Paul’s writings to the community of Galatia (modern day Arkana, Turkey), are not ones that come to mind as much as his writings to Corinth or Rome. However, the major theme of Paul’s letter to the Galatians is ‘Christ and his cross is the way to salvation and holiness.’ By way of background, the Galatians were descen-dents of the Celts who invaded Asia Minor. Galatia was a Roman province with an almost exclusive pagan infl uence. Consequently, the language of his letter to the people there is similar to that of his letter to largely pagan Rome. However, different from Rome, there Paul was fi ghting the infl uence of Jews who had con-verted to Christianity, but who also strongly disagreed with Paul on some teachings and tried to undermine his authority. Consequently, Paul writes with particular passion and even anger, particularly in the 5th and 6th chapters. He concludes the letter with a summary and admits that he writes in large letters, perhaps similar to the way we might emphasize similar emotions in a text or email in all capital letters. If you read this conclusion and then read the pas-sage that we will hear this weekend (Galatians 5:1, 13-18), you may have a deeper appreciation for the way that freedom, the spirit, the law and how the statement “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” fulfi lls the guiding truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This is an important statement by Paul that we hear this weekend. Speaking of the Gospel, we continue to hear from Luke this weekend and, as is almost always the case, the direct connection between it and the fi rst reading is pronounced. The Old Testament reading from Kings tells us that Elisha begins to succeed the great prophet

Elijah. However, Elisha wants to kiss his father and mother goodbye before he begins. Elijah emphasizes the urgency of engaging Elisha immediately, and the result is that they slaughter the oxen they were using for work and roast them on a fi re that is fueled by burn-ing the wooden plowing equipment. Thus, with such drama, Elisha began his prophetic role in succeeding the great Elijah. Our Lukan passage tells us that Jesus gives a similar urgency to all Christians. He says, “No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to what was left be-hind is fi t for the Kingdom of God.” Jesus also responds passionately to the disciples’ instinct to punish the Sa-maritans (who traditionally disdain mainstream Jews). Jesus rebukes them and leads them to another town. This journey theme from town to town is so signifi cant because the entire Gospel is written as a journey ‘up to Jerusalem.’ Jesus seems to be saying that the continuation of the journey is a deep spiritual experience. The jour-ney is forward, not backward. We can always fi nd a reason not to continue the journey when it gets tough. He reminds the early church that we must move ahead embracing the future, but the journey so often requires us to both put some things aside while at the same time clinging to the cross of Jesus Christ. This is es-sential to our Christian identity and forms the building blocks of the most important pattern and belief in all of Christianity – namely, the Paschal Mystery. Most often, we can only get to new life through suffering and death. Suffering often leads to death and, suffering and death, if viewed through the lens of faith, can lead to new life. Our Cross of New Life implies that Jesus is coming out of the suffering and death experience. The cross shows us that he is still partially nailed to the cross and is coming at us, inviting us to new life. You will notice construction in our welcoming area and front offi ce beginning this week. This is the fi nal phase of the Our Family, Our Faith, Our Future capital campaign, and those of you who pledged and fulfi lled your pledges to the campaign have made this new area a reality. Later this summer we will begin replac-ing the projectors and screens in church as well as making other related technological upgrades. The new A/V system is a major element in helping Holy Family fulfi ll our mission: To engage all in the sacramental life through vibrant worship, life-long learning and passion-ate community. Your continuing support is essential for bringing our mission to life. We thank you for your generosity, whether through weekly collections, capital campaign or special directed donations. This upgrade will help us take a big step forward in integrating our audio, visual and informational messages that are criti-cal to the uniqueness of Holy Family.

A Compassionate Heart: Ministry of Presence Gathering SeriesHave you ever thought about how work, home, friendships, and volunteer ser-vice provide us with endless opportunities to be ambassadors for Jesus? Would you approach each day differently if you saw your work as a ministry? Meeting with others for conversation and encouragement in a small group is a wonderful opportunity to explore such topics as true joy, faith-fi lled prayer, compassionate service, and the healing power of listening from the perspective of scripture and the Church. This series is open to anyone who is a volunteer or minister or, simply wants to deepen their baptismal call of being compassionate in our local community and world. Space is limited to 8-10 individuals and will meet 90 minutes once a week for six weeks starting in late August-September, day and time to be determined based on group’s needs. If you would like to begin each day with a new resolve to be a joy-fi lled disciple, contact Brian Michalski, Direc-tor of Liturgical Life at [email protected]/847-907-3472 for more information or to reserve a space.

SUNDAYATTENDANCE & COLLECTIONS

Project Updates June 2016We are moving forward with two important projects that we mentioned in the April Operations update. On June 27 we will begin the fi nal construction for the new front offi ce. The plan creates an effi cient, open and welcoming multi-functional space. The offi ce expansion will mark the completion of the changes in the Narthex that were budgeted as part of the Our Families, Our Faith, Our Future campaign.

The second project is replacing the projectors and screens that play such an important role in our celebration of the liturgy. We knew that our audio-visual equipment would eventually need to be replaced, but we had not planned to do it this year. However, one of the projectors has failed after 10 years of service and we’ve been renting a projector for the last several months at a cost of $2,700 a month.

After reviewing our needs with audio-visual specialists and evaluating their proposals, the Finance Committee has decided to begin the project this year. The importance and value of the A/V system infl uenced the decision to begin the complete replacement of the system, rather than taking more stopgap measures. Although it is a signifi cant expenditure, costing more than $150,000, the long-term benefi ts outweighed other considerations.

Upgrading the entire system as a single project will ensure that all the technology and components are integrated for the best performance. Much of current system has been cobbled together at different times with multiple computers controlling screens, wiring done as needed, and light and sound controllers that have not been adjusted for years. Other upgrades include adding a 65-inch monitor that will be used in the chapel and as needed for meetings in other rooms. We will also be adding two smaller screens to the knuckle and gym entrance that will be linked to the Narthex screens advising visitors of activities and locations.

While there are certainly a number of benefi ts to proceeding with the project at this time, it will neces-sitate our revising our project priorities for reserve funds. Fortunately, we have already received a special donation that will be applied toward the au-dio portion of the upgrade.

The A/V system is a major element in helping Holy Family fulfi ll its mission, “To engage all in the sacra-mental life through vibrant worship, life-long learning and passionate community.” Your continuing support is essential for bringing our mission to life. We thank you for your generosity, whether through weekly collections, capital campaigns or special directed donations.

We are born with an intuitive, pre-rational knowledge that if something exists, it must belong. But rather quickly in life we are taught to see ourselves as separate and special and to view the “other” as dangerous or wrong. The unfamiliar other may be anyone or anything outside our carefully defi ned circumference whose group, religion, race, sexual orientation, or social status is other than our own. By their very otherness they challenge our constructed identity, and we respond by spending much of our energy in opposition and defensiveness. This negative approach does not bring about true or lasting change; it only entrenches us more deeply in our imagined separation. Join us as we unpack ways to help us see each other through the lens of compassion and mercy with the help of Fr. Richard.

To register, contact Mary Whiteside at 847-907-3450 or [email protected]

Handed Down: The Catholic Faith of the Early ChristiansPresented by Dr. Jim PapandreaWednesdays, September 21, 28, October 5 and 12, 20167:00-9:00 pmOur very dear friend, Jim Papandrea, is back! He has been a dynamic teacher for our Bible Journey program in the mornings, but will now join us for an evening program based on his book Handed Down: The Catholic Faith of the Early Christians. This book is the result of his study of early Christianity, his exploration of Catholicism, and his con-version to the Church from his former life as a protestant minister.

Parishioners of Holy Family might remember that Holy Family was Jim’s fi rst parish after his conversion, along with his wife Susie. Jim was also the creator of a booklet called “Catholic Answers to Protestant Questions” which he gave a series of talks on during his time at Holy Family. Those talks were the beginning of this book, published by Catholic Answers Press.

Registration will begin on July 1st.

HOLY FAMILY’S MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY PROJECTSFor the past two years, Holy Family has embarked on an annual mis-sion to Make A Difference by engaging our parish community in service projects that support various outreach agencies in our area. We would like to expand this effort to include two opportunities during the next calendar year. We already have a few contacts of agencies and would like to expand our listing.

We are in need of 2-3 people willing to take a leadership role in contacting the agencies and scheduling these two events. Leaders must have good organizational skills. Time commitment will vary while some work can be done from home.

Human ConcernsCatholic Charities New Hope ApartmentsA Transitional Housing Program for Homeless FamiliesApril, 2016 Update

Family #26This family is doing well. Our mom is still currently working on all of her goals and is begin-ning to plan for when she exits the program. Client reported that she will probably relocate again because the current rent is too high to continue with her current lease. She also reported that her ex-husband is not working so she doesn’t expect to receive anything for child support from him. Her second job is going well and she reported that she anticipates working there over the summer once school is out. Client reported that she is unsure if she will be able to work at the school in the summer. Her children are stable. Client is doing her best to save money because car issues are dipping into her savings.

Family #27This family is also doing quite well and is stable. She is happy that her transportation issue has been addressed. She really enjoys her job which is a blessing. She is committed to keeping her son’s weekly therapy sessions and saving money.

New Hope sends their sincere gratitude to all the Parishioners of the Peace and Justice cluster! These families are very grateful to be a part of the Peace and Justice family.

Thank You Holy Family for Your Support

As one of the faith communities supporting the work of our Spring of Life Partnership of Habitat for Humanity, we want to thank you for all you do to make affordable housing a reality. Our Partnership team has built or rehabbed 12 homes and is currently working on our 13th!! It’s a challeng-ing project and we’re working hard to get this home completed in time for the new homeowner to move in this fall.

Did You Know No One Gets a Free Home? You may not know that all the homes we build or rehab are purchased by families who not only meet fi nancial requirements, but who also work alongside our Spring of Life volunteers on the construction team. Each adult homeowner puts in at least 250 hours on their home.

Spring of Life Partnership RoleOur partnership provides all the labor and up to $35,000 on each home we build. We raise this money through a variety of sources, from individual donations to faith community contributions. Last year, for the fi rst time, we held a fundraiser called Building in Faith, Brick by Brick.

Building in Faith, Brick by Brick FundraiserThe event was held at the Metropolis Theater in Arlington Heights, and, if you attended, you know it was lots of fun. It was also a great success, raising over $10,000 to fund our next home. Naturally, we're doing it again this year. And, we need your help!

We Need Help on Our Event Planning TeamIf you want to help or just want to learn more, please call, text or email Larry Buettner at [email protected]. Or go to www.springofl ifehabitat.org to learn more about our Habitat projects and volunteer opportunities.

On behalf of the families you have helped, God Bless you and thank you for your past support.
