Dear Graduate,

Owens Community College was established September 13, 1965 as a technical
institute with fewer than 200 students enrolled. More than 50 years later, Owens has touched countless lives in northwest Ohio by preparing students for in-demand jobs and successful university transfer.
Owens has awarded more than 39,000 associate degrees, but also educated thousands of additional students who transferred to 4-year public or private colleges to pursue a bachelor’s degree, earned short-term certifications or enrolled in non-credit classes.
An Owens education carries value beyond the classroom.
According to an economic impact study*, Owens graduates benefit directly by earning 14 percent higher future earnings for every $1 they pay for their Owens education.
The community at-large benefits as well. The study found Owens Community College generated $708.3 million in Lucas, Wood and Hancock counties when factoring the College’s operations spending coupled with spending from current students and alumni.
The $708.3 million economic impact produced by Owens is equal to approximately 2.1 percent of the total gross regional product (GRP) in the Owens service district, or the equivalent of creating more than 10,500 new jobs.
In fulfilling its mission through the decades, Owens has responded to labor market needs by offering academic programs leading to in-demand jobs.
Students enrolled in academic programs leading to technical careers when Owens opened in 1965. Today, students choose from more than 70 academic programs and career certifications, transfer options and non-credit continuing education
courses at campus locations in Perrysburg Township and Findlay, the learning center in downtown Toledo and online.
In the classroom, the College’s caring faculty members continue to bring industry information, skills and ideas so students are able to understand how the classroom knowledge translates into the real world. Class sizes remain small, allowing the Owens mission of success for each individual student to be fulfilled.
More information about Owens Community College is available at www.owens.edu.

Keynote Speaker
Wade Kapszukiewicz
Wade Kapszukiewicz was elected mayor of Toledo, Ohio on November 7, 2017 and took the
oath of office on January 2, 2018, becoming the 58th mayor of the city.
Creating a regional water system, increasing the size and diversity of the police force, restoring discipline to the city’s budget, improving educational opportunities for Toledo’s youngest residents and improving city services are among Mayor Kapszukiewicz’s top goals.
Kapszukiewicz has presided over a period of strong economic growth in Toledo. In 2018, Site Selection Magazine ranked Toledo third in the nation for economic development among mid-sized cities, and in 2019 Kempler Industries ranked Toledo the fourth-best city in the United States for manufacturing jobs. According to the Associated General Contractors of America, Toledo was the fifth-fastest growing construction job market in the country from June 2018 to June 2019.
The former Treasurer of Lucas County, Kapszukiewicz helped turn a $3 million deficit two years before he took office into a $17.8 million surplus after his first year. Under his leadership, the number of police
officers on the streets increased for the first time in over a decade, and his initiative to apply market pressure on gun manufacturers to prevent assault weapons from ending up in the hands of dangerous individuals was endorsed by the U.S. Conference of Mayors in 2019.
Most notably, Kapszukiewicz’s proposal to create a regional water system was approved by both City Council and the voters of Toledo, thereby ensuring long-term affordable water rates while sharing decision-making authority with suburban partners. Kapszukiewicz’s work to fight harmful algal blooms in Lake Erie has helped him emerge as a national leader in efforts to prevent pollution in our waterways and promote responsible environmental practices.
To encourage greater transparency in city government, Mayor Kapszukiewicz launched a monthly “Wednesdays with Wade” public meetings series.
Kapszukiewicz received a bachelor’s degree in journalism and political science from Marquette University in 1994 and was named the valedictorian of the College of Communication, Journalism, and Performing Arts. He received a master’s degree in public policy from the University of Michigan in 1996.
Kapszukiewicz is an adjunct professor at Lourdes University, where he teaches a night course in urban policy. An avid baseball fan, Kapszukiewicz had his research published in the Spring 2016 edition of the Society for American Baseball Research journal.
Kapszukiewicz is a parishioner at Gesu Roman Catholic Church. A resident of Toledo since 1973, he was born in San Diego on October 30, 1972. He and his wife, Sarah, celebrated their 18th wedding anniversary in 2019. They live in the Old Orchard neighborhood of Toledo and have two children, Emma and Will.

Class Representative
Maria Guadalupe Lopez Davila
Maria Guadalupe Lopez Davila of Valencia, Venezuela has been selected as the Owens Community
College class representative and will address the graduates during this evening’s ceremony. She is graduating with an Associate of Arts degree in Communication Studies and Cum Laude honors.
She came to the United States on an F1 student visa following her 2017 graduation from Juan XXIII High School in Valencia, the third-largest city in Venezuela with a population of approximately 1.8 million.
She sought an opportunity to learn and grow away from her native country’s struggles. Civil unrest began in Venezuela in 2013 and has continued to present day due to high levels of urban violence, inflation and chronic shortages of basic goods and services, such as food and water. Widespread political corruption is blamed for much of the country’s problems.
In the U.S., Lopez Davila, 20, chose to live near family in Ohio instead of Florida because “I wanted to make the most of the opportunity. I wanted to learn better English. I wanted to live through the four seasons that we don’t have in Venezuela.”
Her uncle, Alberto Bermudez, works for Cooper Tire in Findlay. He attended
Louisiana Tech on a student visa and graduated as a chemical engineer. Now a U.S. citizen, he has lived in the U.S. for more than two decades. She lives in Findlay with her older sister, Maria Fernanda Lopez Davila, who also has moved to the U.S.
Bermudez recommended Owens as a good place to start her higher education. “He had friends and co-workers who attended Owens,” she said. “And I met Annette Swanson from the Owens International Office. She made you feel like this place was for you.”
Owens International Student Services helps international students assimilate into the College’s culture. “Maria is a humbly bright individual. Every goal that she sets for herself, she goes beyond it,” Lyndsay Dimick, International Students Advisor, said.
Despite taking English classes since first grade, she said her time at Owens has taught her how to communicate daily in English as she focuses on a Spanish-English communications career in business, journalism or social media. She said she is now beginning to dream in English as well.
“I was raised in an environment with strong family values. I wanted to make my family proud, to show my mom and dad they did a good job with me,” Lopez Davila said.
Her mother, Dr. Morella Davila, OBGYN, and father, Rostin Lopez, a statistician and broadcaster for the Magellan Navigators professional baseball team in Valencia, hoped to attend the ceremony.
After graduation, Lopez Davila has applied for an Optional Practical Training (OPT) extension to her student visa that would allow her to work for a year in a job related to her major before attending a 4-year university.
“I want to be the best of me so that I represent Venezuela and the Latino culture in what I do,” she said. “I have the duty and responsibility to talk about the good that comes from my country.”

Mace and Presidential MedallionThe College mace and medallion were formally inaugurated at Commencement in May 2011.
The team of Reed Knowles, Peter Johns, Alan Bethea and Randy Wharton from the School of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics partnered with glass artist Mike Wallace from Village Glass of Sylvania in the creation of the mace, which was manufactured by the College. Johns designed and crafted the medallion.
The mace incorporates the elements of technology, machines, science, mathematics, education and the College’s namesake, Michael J. Owens, through the materials of glass, steel and aluminum with colors for the academic schools and the College.
The mace dates to medieval England, when officials or monarchs traveled from one castle to another and were accompanied by an armed force. In the lead were inexperienced troops. In academic processionals, this group is represented by students. The nobleman, represented in the academic process by the College president, marched near the center and was protected by his most trusted bodyguard, who carried an exceptionally formidable weapon, or mace.
By the 14th century, the mace became mostly ceremonial. In modern academic processions, the mace is carried by a distinguished faculty member.
The presidential medallion is silver in color with the College’s seal. It is
adorned around the wearer’s neck by a heavy chain. The College President wears
the medallion during Commencement.
Like the mace, the medallion has a connection to medieval
regalia in the chain; the display of the heavy “chain of office” represents the weight of responsibility for the wearer. The
chain implies strength in unity as well as strong communication. The medallion’s color of silver represents responsibility, accomplishment and wisdom.
The medallion is worn by the College President or his assignee at all convocations of the College.

Identification of the hood and robe as academic apparel is believed to have originated at the English universities of Oxford and Cambridge during the 12th and 13th centuries. The hoods are a carryover from the times when monks, who operated these universities, wore them to protect their shaved heads in the winter. The robe is an adaptation of the shoulder cape also worn by these same monks while collecting alms.
Use of the academic robe came to the United States in 1754 with the founding of what is now Columbia University. In 1895, a commission of university officials adopted a universal code of design and color for the academic garb. This code has undergone several revisions in subsequent years with the most recent modifications accepted in 1960.
Styling of the robes varies for the associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. The width of the sleeve borders and length of the hood increase with each advanced degree.
The color of associate degree gowns is selected by the college awarding the degree. The Owens Community College graduates are donned in black gowns.
Bachelor’s gowns are closed at the throat and have long, pointed sleeves. Master’s gowns may be worn open or closed; have long, oblong sleeves, square and closed at the end, the arms coming through slits near the wrist. Doctoral gowns, worn open or closed, are faced with velvet and have full, bell-shaped sleeves. Each sleeve carries three bars of velvet, called chevrons.
Trustees, presidents and marshals of the colleges, or universities, may wear caps and gowns which are especially designed and colored.
Academic AttireThe President’s regalia at Owens is red with black velvet. The sleeves of the gown have four black chevrons, designating the role of Chief Executive, with silver piping to coordinate with the color of the Presidential medallion.
Academic caps are usually mortarboards, though soft caps also are worn. The cap is black; the tassel is black or the color appropriate to the discipline or field of study, or for a doctoral cap, it may be gold.
The hood gives color and real meaning to the academic costume. The color of the lining identifies the university granting the highest degree held by the wearer. The color of the trim indicates the field of learning in which the degree is received.
Owens Community College graduates wear tassels that represent their academic disciplines and degrees.
