Pastor’s Letter November 10/11

Dear Parish Family,

For some weeks now I have been inviting people after my homily to pray the Apostles Creed, which is found on page 90 in our missalette. This replaces the more often used and familiar Nicene Creed. The rites of our church allow the celebrant to lead the Apostles Creed and I think it is helpful for many people. The Apostles Creed is a simple Baptismal statement of what we believe. The Nicene Creed has more complicated ideas about the Trinity which go back to the theological debates about the humanity and divinity of Jesus. These questions were resolved in the Council of Nicaea (a city in what we now call Turkey) in the year 351. Hence the Nicene Creed.

The Apostles Creed is actually more ancient and probably had its origin in teaching new members about the Catholic faith. It is valuable for us to pray that creed, especially in Masses with young people and families, because it articulates so simply what we believe. But since we have been praying this creed, a number of people have asked me about the line that says “he descended into hell.” Jesus went to hell? How can this be? Let me explain.

First of all, at the time of Jesus, those who died were thought to go into the “abode of the dead.” This was not a place of punishment but rather a place of lifeless suspended animation where the bodies of the dead were without the life-giving spirit that once enlivened them. The Jewish word for this place was Sheol and it was translated into Greek as Hades, which in English is Hell. Where was this place? It was in the earth or underworld. The religious idea was that those who died were waiting for the redeemer or messiah who would restore the life giving spirit and raise them back to life. St. Paul in Thessalonians writes that: “The trumpet will sound and the dead will be raised.”

Jesus descent into this abode of the dead / Sheol / Hades / Hell is important for two reasons. One, to assure us that like every human being Jesus really died just as we do. Again St. Paul says: “He became obedient even unto death, death on a cross.” No short cut for Jesus – he really shared our living and dying. Two, that by sharing in our death, he might lift us up in his resurrection. Jesus descent into the abode of the dead and his resurrection from this tomb is that long awaited moment when the messiah would bring all the faithful to life.

So now we can all pray this creed with better understanding.

He Descended into Hell

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Rev. Michael A. Vetrano, Pastor

Religious Education :: Celebrating Our

Catechists We know and love the Catholic Faith because,

over many years, women and men have practiced the Faith and passed it on to us. We “pay it forward.”

We pass on the Faith by our attitudes and actions in many ways.

Serving as a catechist is a particular way of doing this.

If you still need to register your child for the religious education program, download four documents with registration information from the Religious Education link on the parish website. Mail the registration form and the fee to the parish office or bring it to the rectory. We need to receive the form and payment and have them processed before a student can be enrolled in the program. If registration material is received by Tuesday, students can attend the program the following Wednesday or Sunday.

If you are interested in assisting with the religious education program by serving as a catechist or substitute or in any other capacity, e-mail Sister Cathy Stare at [email protected]

armed forces are invited to come to the 9:30 Mass on

November 11th as we honor your service and ask God’s

blessing. You are welcome to attend in uniform if you wish or

to wear another insignia or sign of your service. We welcome

the opportunity during this month of thanksgiving to express

our gratitude to you.

BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE

November is the Month of the Holy Souls. Our church has the custom

of giving a place of honor to a book in which parishioners write the

names of their deceased. We recall and pray for our beloved dead,

trusting in God's eternal love and mercy to welcome them into the

glory of heaven. We invite you to share this time of remembrance by

writing in the book the names of those friends and loved ones who have fallen asleep in Christ. The

book will be conveniently located in front of the Blessed Mother.

We remember those parishioners who passed away since our last All Souls Day

The souls of the just are in the hands of God

the Life issues, particularly in regard to crisis pregnancy, when abortion is being considered

as the only way out of a difficult situation. There is a diocesan outreach program, with a 24-

hour confidential hotline, where a woman with an unexpected pregnancy can turn for help:

Eucharistic Adoration

Become an Anchor of Prayer for Family Life The Catechism quotes Saint John Paul II: “The Church and the world have a great need for Eucharistic worship. Jesus awaits us in this sacrament of love. Let us not refuse the time to go to meet him in adoration, in contemplation full of faith, and open to making amends for the serious offenses and crimes of the world. Let our adoration never cease. Our parish will have an hour of Eucharistic Adoration following the noon mass on Fridays. We would like to dedicate this hour as a time of contemplation and reflection to pray especially for our families. For strength in family life, for the return of family members to the church, for healing and reconciliation within families that are hurting.

“The jar of flour shall not go empty, nor the jug of oil run dry, until the day when God sends rain upon the earth.”

Most of us probably don’t worry about a “jar of flour” going empty or a “jug of oil” running dry, but, figuratively speaking, if not literally, far too many people do. And, despite God’s great wealth and generosity, far too many “jars” do go empty or “jugs” do go dry. For some, it may actually be food and drink. For others, it may be health or housing. For still others, it may be faith or hope. Why? Has God stopped filling the jar and the jug—or have we? Have we bought into a system where many of the rich enjoy material comfort and honor at the expense of the poor? Have we come to expect, or at least accept, that the poor give out of their necessities because they have no surplus? Sunday’s readings are not only a testament to God’s loving care for and appreciation of those who struggle to survive, but also a reminder that no one should have to struggle to survive. We must all be as generous as possible so that all may not just survive, but thrive.

Our Lady of the Hamptons Regional School

The OLH chapter of the Young Vincentians

recently concluded a Socktober Drive and

collected three hundred pair of socks that will be

distributed through Maureen’s Haven. Their aim

for November is to collect gently used adult and

child coats for Sarah’s Closet.

Intermediate students helped to reach out to senior citizens during Halloween celebrations, both

with their visit to Hampton care Center and the “reverse trick or treating” at Bishop Ryan Village.

Fathers Janusz Lipski and John Wachowicz concelebrated the All Saints’ Day liturgy, prepared by

Mr. Christopher Scapellati and his Prep 8 students.

Students cited for their quiet, yet effective leadership in the school

community during early autumn included: Harrison Hanley, Abigail

Curran, Ava Micari, Trey Gundy, Thomas Sandoval, Joseph Martin

and Henry Springer.

The annual Bucks for Books raffle has gotten an early start, with the drawing of ten prizes ranging

from five hundred to ten thousand dollars scheduled for February 2, 2019. Parish and community

members are asked to call the school at 631-283-9140 to secure their tickets.

While enrollment for this year is now closed, parents are urged to consider registration for the 2019-

20 school year. Materials are available for pick-up or mail. Interviews for next year will begin in late

November. Please call the office at 631-283-9140
