ONE DAY INDUSTRIAL VISIT REPORT

DATE : 01.09.15

PLACE: 400/230 KV Thiruvalam Sub-Station

The one day industrial visit for third year EEE students to 400/230 KV Thiruvalam Sub-Station was

very successful. According to the feedback from staff and students it is understood that it is highly

productive.

We started from our campus at 9:45 am and reached the power plant at 11 am

We had practical exposure of all equipments in sub-station. To that sub-station the power is being supplied from Kurnool (dist.) which is 360km away from Tiruvallam.

We saw Potential Transformers at the receiving point of bus bar and sending end which are used to check the voltages at receiving and sending points. We saw some more equipments which are equipped for protection purpose. Example Reactor, which is used to maintain constant voltage throughout the supplying (or) distribution line by suppressing the extra voltage raising due to inductive and capacitive effects to the ground.

Circuit breaker and Isolator also come under the protective equipments whose functions are that the Circuit breaker is used to disconnect the circuit whenever the voltage fluctuations happen and the Isolator completely isolates receiving circuit under non-working condition.

We have also seen current transformer which is equipped in between circuit breaker and isolator. This is used to measure the high current and is also used for sending the signal to circuit breaker when the secondary rated current is changed.

For stepping down process they installed a three-phase auto transformer. It steps down the incoming 400KV to 230KV and it is maintained with all the protective equipments.

After visiting the sub-station we had a chance to visit the Golden temple at Sripuram.
