Three levelsThere are three levels of the Cambridge Young Learners English Tests – Starters, Movers and Flyers – for children between the ages of 5 and 12. The tests are specially designed so that children can learn in a progressive way. They start by learning simple words and phrases for Starters, and progress to using extended and more challenging language in Movers and Flyers.

Real EnglishThe Cambridge Young Learners English Tests are skills based. This means that the focus is on practical English language skills. There are

Listening, Reading and Writing, and Speaking papers (every child has an oral test with a trained examiner) so children are encouraged to use and

speak English in classroom activities. This gives them more practice, more skill and more con�dence.

Good funOur research shows that children enjoy studying for and taking the Cambridge

Young Learners English Tests. There are many tasks such as drawing and colouring, as well as solving puzzles, which motivate and inspire the children.

Cambridge Young Learners English (YLE) Tests are produced by Cambridge ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) which is part of the world-famous University of Cambridge in the UK.

YLE Tests – Starters, Movers and Flyers - are taken by hundreds of thousands of children all over the world. Learning English at an early age gives children a big advantage. The positive experience of taking a Cambridge Young Learners English Test builds con�dence and is an excellent way of motivating children by showing how much progress they have made.

You can be proud that your child has reached a standard which is recognised internationally and is building a �rm foundation for future studies when she/he receives a Young Learners award.

How can you help your child improve their English?

• Spend some time with your child looking at the book they are using at school

• Review the vocabulary and phrases your child has learned

• Practise short conversations in English such as greetings and simple questions

• Encourage your child to read English story books

• Do some practice Cambridge Young Learners English Tests with your child

• Have a look at some children’s videos or computer games for learning English

• Play nursery rhymes and songs in English

• Listen to English radio or watch TV in English with your child

International standards for your childThe Cambridge Young Learners English Tests set international standards in primary school English for teachers as well as learners.All candidates are tested according to the same international standards and receive an award from Cambridge ESOL.

An award for everyoneEvery child who takes a Cambridge Young Learners English Test gets a Cambridge award, which has a maximum of �ve shields for each language skill: Listening, Reading and Writing, and Speaking. This shows clearly how your child is progressing and will motivate them to study English more.

English for everyoneWhen children have completed the Flyers level of the Cambridge Young Learners English Tests, they can aim for the Key English Test (KET) or the Preliminary English Test (PET). These are international certi�cates in English for older children and adults. Starting at Young Learners and working up through this system is a very e�ective way to progress in English.
