Battelle addresses the most challenging shale water treatment problems1. Water sourcing – Battelle-developed
technology removes metals and sulfates from mine wastewater, converting an environmental pollutant into a source of water for hydraulic fracturing, while reducing freshwater consumption

2. Water treatment –Cutting edge brine treatment solution
3. Technology selection – Identification and deployment of specialized water treatment solutions
Cascade Reverse Osmosis Enables Processing of High-Salinity Brine
• Battelle is currently piloting a novel membrane process for brines with TDS as high as 150,000 mg/L or higher without assistance from evaporation.
• Cascade RO may also be applied for much higher yield and lower discharge volume from lower-TDS brines.
• There is currently no membrane technology that can cost-effectively treat and extract water from salt solutions above about 50,000 – 80,000 mg/L TDS
• Cascade RO provides additional two-inlet, two-outlet counterflow membranes for staged exchange and extraction of water that enables use of existing membranes at much higher TDS levels.

• Who is your customer?
• Be clear on what you needMoney
Demonstration site
Both are difficult but, oddly enough, money is sometimes easier.
• Does your process/technology create a potential additional liability?• Are you truly at TRL 7?
• Must avoid customer fatigue• Does your process provide enough value to overcome the hassle
factor?• Best to have a back-up customer because priorities change quickly.
Emerging Technology Users• The Value Proposition
Staying ahead of the herd
Technology can solve most challenges
• Know where your interest liesInvestment?
Solving a specific problem? – probably best to use a 3rd party consultant and commercially-available technologies
Getting and staying ahead of the herd?
• The Challenge – Sifting through all the “opportunities”Ask for non-confidential information
Ask for a heat & mass balance
