Your Asahi Pentax Spotmatic II is the finest photographic instru-ment on the market. The "Super-Mult i-Coating"

on the Takunrar lens, developed by Pentax and available only on Spotmatic II Takumars, reduces flare and boosts contrast to a degree far beyond rvhat waspreviously possible in optical technology. It is a tougher coating thanis available on any competitive lenses and results in pictures rvith moredetail and richer colours than is possible with any other system atany price.

The Spotmatic II itself is an outgrowth and refinement of the orig-inal Spotmatic which introduced through-the-lens metering to the worldof photography. Its stopped-down metering system is the most accuratemethod for perfect exposure determination. It also automatically givesyou a depth-of-field preview. It is an averaging system for the easiestand most dependable exposures in typical picture-taking situations. Thismetering system has been refined and improved each year in the Spot-matic to a degree of accuracy unmatched in the industry.

The original Spotmatic was the most compact 35mm SLR made. The Spotmatic II retains that same traditional compactness and classicfeel. It also is designed for use with the accessories from the Pentaxsystem, including all of the superb Takumar lens ranging frorri theultra-wide-angle 17mm Takumar up to the super-telephoto l000mmTakumar. The Pentax system can grow with you as your interestsdevelop in any direct ion.

We are very proud of the Pentax Spotmatic II. We are sure youwill be, too.

1 . ,SET F ILM SPEEDLift the outer ring of the shutter speed dial, turn it around and set the same number asthe ASA number of the loaded film to thesmall red index which appears alongside thefigure 1. Then cock the rapid wind lever.

2. SET SHUTTER SPEEDTurn the shutter speed dial and set the speedyou wish to use to the index. When outdoors, set the speed at l/125 sec. or faster, depend-ing upon the l ighting. When indoors, set it atL/30, or in its neighbourhood. Change theshutter speed later, when necessary. (Refer

to 5 on the next page.)

3 . COMPOSE AND FOCUSWhile viewing through the viewfinder, turn

the distance scale ring with your thumb and

index finger until you get the sharpest image

of your subject at the microprism centre ofthe finder.

When the needle restsat the centre, you will get correct exposure. If the needle does not come to the centre nomatter how far you turn the diaphragm ring, change the shutter speed. When the needle isoff centre and close to the (t ) mark, you wil lget over-exposure: change the shutter speedto a faster setting. If the needle is closer tothe (-) mark, you wil l get under-exposure:change the shutter speed to a slower setting.

6. RELEASE SHUTTERHold your camera, firmly and trip the shut-ter. When the shutter is released, the meterswitch wil l automatically turn off, and theneedle wil l remain fixed off and underneaththe centre. The diaphragm will reopen to itsfull aperture and the overali image will lookbrighter. Cock the rapid wind leyer for thenext picture. How to holdyour camera

In hor izon ta l pos i t ion A. Ho ldthe camera firmly with yourleft hand, and draw your armclose to your body.

In ver t i ca l pos i t ion B. Ho ldyour camera t ight ly to your fore-head with your lef t hand, anddraw your right arm close toyour body.

In ver t i ca l pos i t ion C. Ho ldyour camera tightly to your fore-head with your left hand, raiseyour r ight arm and draw yourleft arm to your body.

As a general rule, your camera shouldbe held more firmly by the left handwhich does not release the shutter. If you hold your camera with theright hand -- the hand which releasesthe shutter - it may cause cameramovement. Very often, pictures

which are not sharp are due to move-ment of the camera. When you focuswith the camera held horizontally(Position A), hold the lens barrel asillustrated. Cradle the camera withyour left hand thumb and little fin-ger. Turn the diitance scale ringwith your thumb and index finger. When holding the camera vertically, some people release the shutter withthe thumb (Position B), while othersrelease it with the index finger (Posi-tion C). Position C is more desirablefor fast focusing and shooting. Withthe Asahi Pentax, whether held ver-tically or horizontally, you see yoursubject image through the takinglens, enabling you to compose, focusand shoot with a minimum of timeand effort.

Film type reminder dial

Use the filmtype dial toshow whattype of filmis in yourcamera. When you

have pulled out the rewind knob toopen the back when loading thefilm, turn the dial selector so thatthe type of film appears in the win-dow. To check whether the camerais loaded, turn the film rewind knobclockwise. If it turns freely. thecamera is not loaded.

Film loadingAvoid direct sunlight when loading yourfi lm.

l. Open the back by pull ing out therewind knob until back cover snapsopen.

2. Place the film cassette into the cas-sette chamber, and push back the re-wind knob. Draw out the fi lm leaderand insert it into slot of the take-uospool.

3. Advance the film by alternately turn-ing the rapid wind lever and releas-ing the shutter until both sprocketshave properly engaged the film per-forations. Close the back by pressingit f irmly.

4. If the film is properly loaded, the re-wind knob wil l turn counter-clock-wise when you advance the film byturning the rapid wind lever.

Setting ASA fi lm speedThe ASA filmspeed rating of all35mm films isgiven in the datasheet packed witheach roll of film. The higher theASA number, themore sensitive thefilm. Lift the out-

er ring of the shutter speed dial androtate it until the ASA number ofyour film is opposite the red indexmark.

Be sure to set your film speed onthe shutter speed dial because thedial is connected to the exposuremeter system.

1 The first portions of the film can-not be used for picture taking asthey have already been exposedto light. Generally, two blank ex-posures should be made beforetaking your first picture. Cockthe rapid wind lever until it stops.Watch to see that the film rewindknob automatically turns coun-ter-clockwise, indicating that thefilm is moving from cassette totake-up spool. Trip the shutter.

Film wind and rewind

Cock the rapid wind lever forthe first picture; the exposurecounter automatically turns to'1', indicating that the first pic-ture is ready to be taken.

2 After the final picture on theroll (20 or 36 exposures) has beentaken, the rapid wind lever willnot turn all the way as you strokeit. This indicates that the finalpicture has been taken on yourfilm, and that the film must berewound. DON'T open the backof the camera, or all exposedframes will be ruined.

3 Unfold the film rewind crank.

Depress the film rewind releasebutton. Turn the rewind crankto rewind the film into the filmcassette. The film rewind crankpermits rewinding at a smooth, even rate. (Under some atmos-pheric conditions, erratic or toorapid rewinding will cause staticelectricity marks,on the fi lm.)You will feel the tension on therewind crank lessen as the leaderend of the film slips off the take-up spool.

Stop rewinding when you feelthis happen. AVOID DIREC'fSUNLIGHT WHEN UNLOAD.ING YOUR FILM. (The rewindrelease button will return tonormal position as you load yournext film and turn the rapidwind lever.)

Pull out the film rewind knob(the back will open automati-cally), and remove the film cas-sette.

In bright sunlight, youcan easily focus with diaphragmclosed to f/5.6 or f/8 and still ob-serve the depth of field. It is easi-€r, however, to focus with the dia-phragm fully open as your subjectimage is much brighter.

When the letters "MAN" appearsbeside the lever, the lens is in manualposition; when "AUTO" appears, itis in automatic position.

MicroprismAsahi Pentax cameras have a Fresnellens with a microprism centre under-neath the ground glass. As you lookthrough the finder, you will see thatthe Fresnel lens consists of manyconcentric rings which provide thebrightest possible image on theground glass.

The microprism is the centre por-tion of this diagram. When yoursubject is in focus, the image in themicroprism will be sharp and per-fectly clear. If your subject is notin focus, the microprism will breakthe image up into many small dots, much like engraver's screen. Youcan focus your subject on any por-tion of the ground glass.

Automatic diaphr agnt

t When the preview lever is in "AIJ-

TO" (automatic) position, and theexposure meter is turned to "OFF",

the fully automatic diaphragm is atits largest aperture at all times, ex-cept for the instant of exposure, nomatter rvhat aperture is set on thediaphragm ring. When you releasethe shutter, the diaphragm automat-ically stops down to the predeter-mined aperture and the shutter cur-tains start traveling instantly. Whenthe exposure is completed, the dia-phragm reopens to maximum aper-ture completely automatically andyou are ready to compose, focus andshoot your next pictures. If you wishto visually check exact depth-of-fieldbefore making the exposure, move thepreview lever to "MAN" (manual)position. This stops the diaphragmto the aperture selected and showsyou exactly how much depth-of-fieldwill appear in your picture. The pre-view lever may be moved back to"AUTO" (automatic) position beforeor after making your exposure, or, ifyou are making pictures in brightsunlight, it may be left in manualposition, which permits a constantcheck of depth of field.

*When the exposure lneter switch isturned to the "on" Position, the lensdiaphragm changes from the auto'matic to mamual position eaen thoughthe preuiew leaer is in the " AU TO"( autornatic) position. When the shut-ter is released, the lens diaphraglnwill autornatically return to its au'tomatic position if the leuer is seton " A(JTO" .

Turn the shutter speed dial clock-wise or counter-clockwise to theshutter speed desired. The shutter

1 At slow speeds-slower than I/J0- support your camera rigidly oruse a tripod to prevent movementof your camera.

Shutterspeed may be set either before orafter cocking the rapid wind lever. As you cock the shutter by turningthe rapid wind lever, the "cocked"

indicator turns to red showing thatthe shutter is cocked. .

The indicator window blacks outas you trip the shutter button. Foruse of the X setting on the shutterspeed dial, refer to page 18.

With the shutter speed dial set onB (bulb), the shutter will stay openas long as you depress the shutterbutton. As you release your fingerfrom the shutter button, the shuttercloses. When a long exposure isdesired while using the B setting, attach a shutter release cable with alocking device to the shutter button. This will permit a "Time" exposure.

2 To protect the shutter mechan-ism, trip the shutter release be-fore putting the camera out ofuse for any extended period.

If you want to know how great thedepth of field is at a certain aper-ture, look at the depth-of-field guide. In the above photograph, the distancescale is set at 5 meters . . . the lens isfocused on a subject 5 meters away. The calibrations on each side of thedistance index correspond to thediaphragm setting and indicate therange of in-focus distance for differ-ent lens apertures. For example, ifthe lens opening of f/8 is to be used.

Depth-of-field guidethe range on the distance scale ringcovered within the figure 8 on thedepth-of-field guide indicates thearea in focus at the lens opening. You will note from the depth-of-fieldguide in the photograph that therange from approximately 10 to 25feet is in focus. Note that as the lensapertures chang€, the effective depthof field also changes. For the depthof' fields at different apertures anddistances, refer to page 14-15.

f Depth of fi.etd is the range between the II nearest and farthest distances uthich IL are in focus at different lens apertures. J

Range of light measurementThe exposure meter of the Spotmatic measures the brightness of the groundglass. Therefore, the meter should be turned on alter you have focusedyour subject on the ground glass. The follorring table shows the range ofthe meter's light measurement, and should not be interpreted as the cam-era's total range of f/stop-shutter speed combinations. As you will notefrom the table below, with an ASA100 film, -v-ou may use any shutter speedfrom 1 sec. to 1/1000 sec. in combination rvith any aperture that will bringthe meter needle to the midpoint in the viervfinder. The total range ofthe aperture settings is, of course, determined by the minimum and max-imum apertures of the lens being used. For example, u,ith the 50mm f./I.4lens and ASA100 film, an aperture from f ll.4 (the maximum aperture ofthis lens) to f /16 (the minimum aperture) may be used with any shutterspeed from 1 sec. to 1/1000 sec. that wili bring the meter needle to midpoint.

How to check i t1. Set the shutter speed dial to B

(bulb) position.2. Turn the ASA dial to ASA 100.3. Push the meter switch to "on"

position.Look at the meter's needle throughthe viewfinder. lf the needle rapidlydrops, the meter battery has sufficientcapacity; if it does not, replace themercury battery.

How to replace itOpen the battery housing cover on thebottom cover plate with a coin. Re-move old battery and insert new bat-tery with 11) side toward the top ofthe camera. For replacement, useMallory PX-400 or RM-400-R or equiv-alent.

GAUTION: The mercury battery islike a phonograph record. It can bedamaged by skin acids. Handle by theedges with a dry cloth only. Be surethe battery is cleaned with the clothbefore insertion into the camera. Thebattery is not rechargeable.

DANGER! A serious accident has been reported of a small child who has put a rnercurtbattery into his mouth and has been hos/italized for serious gripes and stomach inflamma-tion. Please aluays heep a mercury battery from the reach of small children.

Flash synch ronization

The Spotmatic II has FP and X terminals at the front of the camera body,

and a separate FP/X contact on the built-in hot shoe. The table below shows

which flash contact, which shutter speed and which flash bulb may be com-

bined for maximum lamp efficiency. Unless these combinations are rigidly

followed, there will be a failure in flash synchronization. Note the "X"

setting is exactly at the 60 marked on the speed dial. This indicates the

highest shutter speed at which electronic flash units ma1" be used.

Use the hot shoe flash contact only when using the Super-Lite II or any

other electronic flash or flash gun that has a flash contact on the shoebracket. To select FP or X, just turn the FP/X switch rim so that eietherone of the marks appears in the window.

Self-timerDepending upon how far down you turn theself-timer cocking lever O, it will release theshutter in 5-13 seconds. When operating theself-timer, always depress the self-timer re-lease button @ to release the shutter. Donot depress the shutter button . " . it will im-mediately release the shutter without delayedaction. The self-timer cocking lever shouldbe turned down at least 90" or the releasebutton will not operate.

lntra-red photographyIf you intend to take infra-red photographs, remember to use the small t(R" index mark-ed on the depth-of-field guide. Some of theTakumar lenses, however, like the above pic-ture of Super-Takumar 50mm f/I.4, do nothave the ((R" mark. The index is just a shortorange line.

First, focus your lens on your subject. Determine the lens to subjectdistance from the distance scale. Then match your lens to subjectdistance to the ((R" mark by turning the distance scale accordingly. For instance, if your subject is in focus at infinity, turn the distancering and move the infinity ("") mark to the rtR" index. The ((R" index marking on the Takumar lenses is based on the lenssetting at infinity.

How to make deliberate double exposure

For deliberate double exposures, make the first exposure in the normal wayThen tighten the film by turning the rewind knob C, and keep hold of th(rewind knob. Depress the film rewind release button @ and cock the rapicwind lever. This tensions the shutter without advancing the film. Finallyrelease the shutter to make trr'e second exposure. Then make one blankexposure, before taking the next picture, to avoid overlapping.

Always keep the meter switched off whennot actual ly taking readings. Leaving themeter switched on wi l l rapidly exhaust thebattery. It is also necessary to keep themeter switched of f when mount ing a Super-Takumar or SMC Takumar lens on theSpotmat ic I I camera body. How to take care of your camera

1. STORAGE

a) The instrument, when not in use, should be protected from damp-

ness and dust. Preferably, it should be kept in its case and, as an addi-

tional precaution, inserted into a polyethylene bag.

b) Care should be taken to see that the camera is not kept in abnor-

mally high or low temperatures - normal room temperature is best.

c) Take the precaution of removing any batteries since, no matter how

well made these may be, there is always a risk of deterioration and

corroslon.

2. EXERCISE

All mechanical instruments need to be exercised regularly to keep them

in good condition. Cameras are no exception to this rule. If you put

your car in storage for the winter, the first thing a prudent owner does

in the spring is to have it serviced before putting it back on the road.

There is not quite the same parallel between a motor car and a camera,

nevertheless, you should store your camera where you can get at it easily

and put it through its normal operations at least once per mOnth. i.e.

a) Set the shutter release and fire.

b) Turn to a slow shutterfire. Also operate delayed

speed and again .set the shutter release and

action device (self-timer).

meter for correct operation.

d)

Examine the exposure

Check film transport.

e) Check the range finder or pentaprism viewfinder.

These actions will keep the mechanism in good order, retaining the

natural qualities of the lubricant - thus ensuring the camera is ready for

instant use when required.

c)

22

Page 26: This is the full text and images from the manual. This may ... Cameras/pentax_spotmatic_ii-1.pdf · Super-Lite electronic flash Spot exposure meter III. ASAHI PENTAX SPOTMATIC II

3. RUNNING TEST BEFORE USE

Before embarking on a holiday where your camera will be your constantcompanion or, in fact, any other reason for the camera being requiredon an important assignment, make a few trial exposures. It is advis-able to test the camera at least four weeks prior to your departure togive time for a test film to be exposed and processed. NIany spoiledholiday records would have been avoided if this precaution had beentaken.

4. DUSTY CONDITIONS

When your camera is used on the beach, or other conditions where dustor sand can easily infiltrate the mechanism, take the precaution of put-ting the instrument with its case into a polyethylene bag or other con-tainer so that flying dust or sand are prevented from entering the cam-era. This applies particularly, of course, if it is laid down on a sandybeach. Furthermore, avoid leaving the camera in such a position thatdirect sunlight is allowed to fall upon it for a long length of time.

5. LOOSE PIECES OF FILM

This nuisance is often the cause of trouble with a camera. Small chipsof fitm can easily damage the mechanism. Therefore, check your cam-era every time it is loaded. Always make sure it is free from smallpieces of film.

6. TREATING YOUR CAMERA TENDERLY

Your camera is a fine, precision instrument. It has been produced withgreat care and attention to detail. Do not allow it to be swung by itsshoulder strap, thrown into the back of a car, or in any other waytreated as if it were as robust as a battleship. If you protect the cam-era against possible damage due to a knock, you will be amply repaidby years of excellent and trouble-free service.

lnterchangeableThe Asahi Pentax offers many inter-changeable lenses in a wide varietyof focal lengths, all of which are high-ly respected by both professional andamateur photographers for their fineresolution. The photographic cover-age of the various Takumar lensesis il lustrated on page 25. With focallength longer than 55mm, the subjectimage is seen through the viewfinderlarger than its life size.

Regardless of the lens selected foryour Asahi Pentax, there is neverneed for an accessory viewfinder, ordinarily required for rangefindertype cameras.

When interchanging lenses, hold thelens by the distance scale ring. Whenattaching a lens, fi lter, or lenshood,do not screw it too tightly, 3s youmay find it difficult to remove.

Lenses

Fixed Focusing SettingBecause of the considerable depth offield of wide-angle lenses, ]-ou can usethem as fixed focus lens if the dia-phragm and distance scales are setproperly. For your convenience, theSuper-Takumar and SMC Takurnarlenses shown on pages 26 and 27

(marked rvith * ,i have a fixed focusmark. Just align with the index theorange-coloured figures of the dia-phragm and distance scales, and thelens n'ill be in fixed focus from fore-ground to infinity. You'll find this ex-

tremely convenient for fast shooting.

Super-Multi-Goated (SMG ) TakumarsPentax SMC Takumar lenses arethe world's first 7 -layer multi-coatedlenses. A truly remarkable opticalachievernent. Conventional lenseshave only 1-3 layer coatings. Theadditional coating of SMC Takumarlenses let in more lighting resultingin truer colours. Ref lection is re-duced to 0.2% allowing the remain-ing 99.8% of light to pass through. This means higher light transmis-sion, and the brightest lens possible.Colours pass through with equal in-

tensity so colour balance is strikinglyimproved. Brighter blues. Vibrantreds. Truer yellows. SMC Taku-mar lenses make it possible. And,no ghosts or flares even when shoot-ing against the sun. Ultra violetlight is reflected off the glass sur-face. So, only true colours are ab-sorbed. Undesired rays are kept out.SMC Takumar lenses are for peopleinterested in the ultimate in photo-graphic lenses.
