2020-2021 Flex Obligation for Full-time Faculty

• There is a total 30-hour obligation for tenured full-time faculty, a 40-hour obligation for second year tenure track faculty, and a 50-hour obligation for first year tenure track faculty (usually completed in Nexus).

• There are 5 hours of Mandatory Flex each semester for a total of 10 mandatory hours per year. • Full-time “A” contract faculty may choose to complete their Flex obligation over the entire calendar year, July 1 through June 30. • Flex credit cannot be “banked” or “made up” from one academic year to another. Fall 2020 Flex Obligation for Part-time “C” and “AC” Faculty

Note: The district and UF have agreed that part-time faculty have already met their fall 2020 flex obligation because of the sudden shift to online teaching due to the pandemic. Therefore, PT faculty are excused from their FA20 flex obligation and do not need to submit their flex obligation forms at the end of the term. PT faculty are still welcome and encouraged to participate in flex activities as they see fit. The information below is based on what the flex obligation would have been if flex hours had not been excused.

Part-time faculty have a Flex obligation that is directly related to compensation and the number of instructional days in the semester. Flex obligation is based on the academic calendar, more specifically to the day of the week on which classes begin and end.

Consequently, the Flex obligation is adjusted each semester. The semester start or end date can prevent a full 16-week semester of class meetings. Part-time Flex obligation applies only to adjunct faculty who are teaching face-to-face, full-term (16-week) classes (it does not apply to online, short-term or late start classes).

For Spring 2020, part-time instructors (and full-time faculty on AC contract) teaching a semester length, face-to-face class, have a flex obligation that is equal to the number of instructional hours taught in a week on Sundays, Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. In short, if you teach a full term, face-to-face class any day mentioned here, the number of hours of your flex obligation are equal to the number of hours you teach on those days in one week. So if you teach 3 hours on Monday, and 3 hours on Wednesday, you only owe 3 hours. If you only teach on Tuesday or Wednesday, you do not have a flex obligation for spring.

Flex activities must be completed during the semester they are required. “C” and “A/C” contract faculty may not bank hours and use them in a different semester.

Note: non-instructional faculty (i.e., librarians and counselors) with no unit-bearing teaching load do not have a Flex obligation.

Student Panel: Supporting LGBTQ+ Students Online 10:00am-12:00pm

The transition to online learning poses special challenges for our LGBTQ+ students, who navigate home and campus life differently. Many students who are out on campus are not out at home—only 21%. And 67% of these students hear their families make unsupportive comments about the LGBTQ+ community (https://neaedjustice.org/2020/04/23/in-response-to-covid-19-a-checklist-to-support-lgbtq-students-during-distance-learning/). Without an affirming campus community to counterbalance a challenging home life, some students struggle. Additionally, for many students there are basic needs challenges related to mental health, access to food, and technology. Hear from a panel of LGBTQ+ students who will tell you about their experiences with online learning and strategize with you about how best to support them. Participants will walk away with a deeper understanding of the experience of our LGBTQ+ students and develop a set of best practices to support these students in the coming semester, in the online classroom and beyond.

UndocuAlly Training: What does it mean to be an Ally to undocumented students? 1:00pm-2:30pm

Undocumented students are often reluctant to share their immigration status with college staff, faculty, and administrators in fear of deportation and discrimination. As a result, most undocumented students are unaware of the programs and services that may assist them or receive incorrect information about resources that are available to them. Part of the challenge is that immigration policies are complex in nature and consistent training is necessary in order to stay abreast of all the legal and political implications in assisting undocumented students. Since 2015, the DREAMERs Alliance began developing the UndocuAlly Training and Ally Sticker Program. We invite you to join us for this interactive discussion and to learn about the history, legislation,

As you probably have seen, research shows that Statway pedagogy on average enables students to achieve high success rates (about 75%) while boosting student confidence with math and scholarship in general. It’s challenging and fun, for teachers and students! DVC has a campus license for Statway materials, so you can use them as much or as little as you like in your class. (A) You can choose select Statway activities and lessons. I will share some of the best and most popular with you. Or (B) you can adopt the Statway curriculum for your course. Just in time for COVID-19, Statway has been redesigned from the ground up for online classes, using RealizeIT with interactive small group Zoom sessions. The new virtual courses can be fully asynchronous, or part synchronous and asynchronous. Anyone at DVC can use instructor choice to adopt these materials for their Math 142 or 042/142 classes. We will discuss the pros and cons in this workshop.
