1. Weet iemand waarvoor staan ASICS?

Die Latyn is “ANIMA SANA IN CORPORE SANO” ‘n gesonde gees in ‘n gesonde liggaam. En ‘n gesonde gees, is veral wat jy vir jou eerste Comrades benodig. Ons oefen tog om ons hele menswees te verryk, al die fasette daarvan, nie net die fisieke nie. Comrades is ‘n reis wat jy aanpak, ‘n pelgrimstog en probeer om die lewenslesse van die voorbereiding en die dag self van toepassing te maak op jou deelname aan die lewe. My standard 8 veldskool tema was “betrokkenheid en balans” en dit is waaroor suksesvol leef gaan. Jy moet dáár wees, maar jy moet balans handhaaf in jou betrokkenheid by dinge in jou lewe. Langafstandatlete is baie geneig om so meegevoer te raak, dat hulle dinge oordoen. Met dit as agtergrond, deel ek graag met julle ‘n paar perspektiewe wat ek na 27 jaar op die pad en 20 voltooide Comrades wys geword het. Ja, ek het ook een onvoltooide Comrades op my kerfstok! Maar ek kom later terug na die blaps.

Teen hierdie tyd is die meeste van jou voorbereiding reeds gedoen; jy het al geëksperimenteer met skoene en doepa en hidrasie op lang wedlope en oefensessies; jy het reeds gekwalifiseer of hoop om dit nog voor 3 Mei te doen.

Wat bly dan nou oor om te weet as dit jou eerste Comrades is? Ek het 10 notas gemaak wat vir my uitstaan:-

2.1 Moenie nou paniekerig word en dinge wat die hele jaar vir jou gewerk het, begin wantrou en nuwe goed uittoets nie. Jy sal weet watter nuwe wonderwerke as versoekings aan jou opgedis word. Sosiale media en vriende kan hierin ‘n groot rol speel;2.2 Bly gesond deur veral ekstra slaap in te kry. Ons kan nie almal spanning vermy nie, maar meer slaap versterk die immuunstelsel, help met geestelike en fisiese herstel en gaan jou minder laat stres ook; ‘n jaar wat ek gereelde boonste en onderste lugweginfeksies gekry het, het ‘n kardioloog vir my gesê ek moet net 1 uur ekstra slaap probeer inkry gedurende die maand voor Comrades. Dit werk.2.3 Moenie nou verlore kilo’s jaag nie; rus eerder en as jy olik voel, sit ‘n dag of 2 uit, eerder as om jouself goed siek te hol!;2.4 Wees maar ‘n bietjie selfgerig en vermy samedromming van mense en siekes. Jy het hard gewerk tot hier. As jy ‘n toeganklike toesighouer by die werk het, probeer om werksuitstappies ná Comrades te skeduleer;2.5 Terwyl ons nou by siekte is, kom ek terug na my mislukte 19de Comrades… ek het siek gaan hardloop, wetende dat ek nie reg is nie en met ‘n lyf vol antibiotika. By “18 to go” het mediese personeel my van die pad af gehaal en dit het my ‘n jaar geneem om oor die tragedie te kom! Jou familie kan nie ‘n jaar lank aan jou brose gemoed werk nie en sielkundiges is duur. Dit is beter om nie te begin nie, as om te moet ophou, glo my. Dis nooit die moeite werd om permanente skade aan te rig nie -

“live to run another day”;2.6 Vermy antibiotika in die 3 weke voor die wedloop;2.7 Die meeste van ons het goeie vriende gemaak op die pad en daardie kameraderie is een van die goed-voel dinge van ons sport, MAAR, op wedloopdag moet jy jou eie wedloop hardloop. Gesels vooraf met vriende oor wat gebeur indien een van julle dalk teëspoed optel. Dis baie moeilik om op die pad hierdie tipe besluite te neem. Jy kan later skaars somme maak en ‘n mens se kop raak eenvoudig net te plat om interpersoonlike intriges op te los;2.8 Al is jy hoe goed ookal voorberei, is die afstand nuut vir jou kop en lyf; dis goed om ‘n strategie en doelwitte te hê, maar om weer terug te kom, moet jou ingesteldheid eerder wees om die wedloop net in een stuk te voltooi en dit te geniet, want dis ‘n ongelooflike groot voorreg om dit te kan doen. Daar is net een eerste keer – beleef die atmosfeer ten volle;2.9 Wees sovêr moontlik nie aangewese op iemand langs die pad vir jou doepa en pille nie; dis ‘n luukse om ‘n ondersteuner op die roete te hê, maar ek belowe jou dat hy/sy ‘n erger dag as jy het! Die geworstel deur verkeer en stryd om betyds parkering te kry, kan groot frustrasie vir hulle veroorsaak;2.10 Laaste maar eintlik eerste: gee erkenning aan jou ondersteuningsnetwerk, want hulle het eindelose geduld met jou. Dis ‘n liefdestaak om ons anderkant te kry en hulle kry nie medaljes nie.

Elke Comrades is spesiaal, maar jou eerste Comrades is veral meer ‘n reis as ‘n bestemming. Geniet dit, vier jou lewe en jou gesondheid en moenie vergeet om op jou knieë te gaan en dankie te sê nie.

Separate start for 10/21? No (0/5) I saw at least 4 walkers ahead of me at the start, but I saw sev-eral more that had finished ahead of me, yet whom I never saw at the start. I still have no idea who of those ahead of me did the 10 or the 21, and I have no idea what my final position was.Prize money for walkers: First only, and no age category prizes. (1/5)

Separate results for walkers: Yes (5/5)

Start: Filled up from the front, always a recipe for disaster, and this was no different. Not only was it a relatively narrow start, but because it filled from the front, lots of athletes lined up on the sides in front of the start line and then squashed in the moment the gun sounded (which was fired without any warning and when everybody thought there was still a minute or so to go, to simply further add to the chaos). Quite a serious bit of a push and shovel at the start, resulting in a number of athletes falling and I saw at least one athlete fall on top of another one and then others trying unsuccessfully to avoid them. If the start was moved by about 150 metres, which could easily be made up by adding another block in town, all of this could easily have been avoided. Quote a big race, despite so many people being away at the Loskop. Very poor (1/5)

Route: Nice and flat to downhill for the first 3 km, but by then you already knew you’d have to make it up somewhere. That somewhere started as a little warning around 3 km (not quite sure where, as I did not see any distance markers up to 5km painted on the road (which means most ath-letes missed it, and the first actual marker I saw was rather small, high on a street light pole, and at 7km; after that I saw 8 km and nothing else). Then around 3.6 km we faced a monster of a hill. I managed to maintain correct form for about 700 metres, but then had to resort to power walking for another 750 steps (yes, I counted them). I started race walking again as soon as I could. After the monster hill, it was quite a nice route (although those that did the 21 km had to face that hill again), except that at the end we faced just about 400 metres on uneven grass – again, not really a prob-lem for runners, but a different kettle of fish for walkers. The organisers could easily have added a few hundred metres on the course itself and spared us at least 300 meters on the grass. Neverthe-less, I was quite happy with my time (59:15). OK (3/5) Marshalling: Marshalls at most intersections, but traffic did not always abide, especially the big crossing less than 1 km from the start. Very good (4/5)

Water points: Way too few helpers on each of the water points and many runners had to stop and help themselves. I also heard from the slower walkers that there was little or no water left by the time they got to the water points, so I just wonder whether there was anything left for the athletes on the second lap of the 21. Poor (2/5) Access and parking: More than adequate parking, but with a single entrance many athletes had a problem getting in and then just parked anywhere, regardless of the organisers’ best efforts. It res-ulted in several athletes, including myself, being caught between cars with no ways of getting out until one of the other cars left. Good (3.5/5)

Personal experience: We had fantastic weather, overcast and cool with little wind, so really ideal for running/walking. I was still struggling with a small injury that hampered the use of my one shoulder, but otherwise I had quite a nice walk – except that I never saw any other walkers outside of the first 250 metres, once when what I presume was a late starter sped by me at terrific speed (and with good style), and when I nearly caught another walker just before then end. The hill tapped me, but I was happy with my recovery after that. Very good (4.5/5)

FOREVER RESORT - RUN FOREST RUN LOSKOP 50KM – Marietjie VenterDie weer was perfek.  Soos altyd een van die beste wedlope in die land.  Maar met my het dit nie te goed gegaan nie.  Omtrent van 9km af pyn my rug en dink ek, sal net tot 25km gaan en kyk of ek die afsny tyd van 3:45 maak,  Daar gekom maak ek dit met 10 min., weet toe daar is 'n fisio net na 25km.  Ek stop by hulle doen die nodige en daar gaan ek weer.  By 36km se afsny maak ek dit met 3 minute.  Die marshalls sê nou moet jy hardloop afsny by 42km is 6 ure.  Gelukkig weet ek die af-draendes lê voor my en hardloop 5 minute 'n km en dan kom die plat gedeelte net voor 42km se af-sny, stap nie, hardloop net want ek sien die marshalls al in die verte, maak dit met 5 min, nou is dit vir die einde.  8 Km met 1 uur 5 minute, ek doen gewoolik 'n 8km in 'n 1 uur maar nou is dit te min

want ek moet nog oor die bult.  Kom by die waterpunt net voor die bult, daar is 'n oom en hy gil op ons, hardloop kat ogies, ek begin draf 'n kat ogie, stap 'n kat ogie die bult op.  Nou is ek by 2km om te gaan en afdraende wat ek kan draf maar toe ek by Aventura in draai, skree die toeskouers daar is 4min, om die volgende draai 3 min, om die volgende draai 2 min, gelukkig kom Hennie tot my red-ding gryp my aan my hand.  My maatjies sê hulle het nog nooit geweet ek kan sulke lang tree hard-loop nie, toeskouers skree "don't kill her" toe ek sien begin die sekondes al aftel en hardloop toe oor die mat 6:59:44 en daar klap die skoot. Dus ek het dit gemaak met 16 sekondes.  Dankie Jesus, dit was net genade!

Training/Health snippets

When running with old, worn-out shoes, you don’t give your feet the cushioning, stability and sup-port they need, and this could lead to injury. When buying new shoes, abide by the following rules to ensure your shoes last the distance:

- Never put your shoes through the washing machine or tumble dryer- The best was to dry shoes, either after running in the wet or after washing them, is to

stuff them with newspaper and leave them to dry naturally, preferably out of the sun and in a well-ventilated room

- Don’t use your running shoes for other sports or activities==

Shoe careDo’s and don’ts:As the old saying goes look after your equipment and it will look after you. The same goes for your running shoes. If you follow these you will get the maximum mileage from them:- Do wash or clean as soon as possible after your run- Do remove dry mud with a soft, dry scrubbing brush- Don’t put your shoes through the washing machine unless you absolutely have to – and then only on a cold wash cycle- Do wash by hand with mild detergent and lukewarm water- Do dry by filling with scrunched up newspaper and leaving them in an airy space- Don’t leave them to dry in front of a heater or in the oven’s warming drawer- Do store away from bright sunlight and out of any extreme cold- Don’t leave them outside all the time- Don’t use your running shoes for any other sport- Don’t use road shoes for trail running- Do have more than one pair if you can afford it, as you will have more chance to care for them properly between runs
