THE TENDERNESS OF GODIn recent months our newly elected Pope Francis has stressed the importance of the

tenderness and compassion of God. He said: “The Lord loves us tenderly. The Lordknows that beautiful science of caresses, the tenderness of God. He does not love us withwords. He comes close and gives us His love with tenderness. Closeness and tenderness. The Lord loves us in these two ways. He draws near and gives all His love even in thesmallest things: with tenderness. And this is a powerful love, because closeness and ten-derness reveal the strength of God’s love.”

Let us focus together on the meaning and abundance of the tenderness and compassion of our loving God.In the book of Isaiah we read:

“He will feed his flock like a shepherd. He will carry the lambs in his arms, holding them close to his heart. He will gently lead the mother sheep with their young." Isaiah 40:11

In the Parable of the prodigal Son we see the father who embraces his lost son giving him back all the priv-ileges he had before and most importantly his abundant love full of forgiveness and compassion. As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and haveseen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy. James 5:11.

Jesus forgives our sins whenever He realizes that we have repented and want to convert and return to thesource of life. Jesus forgave the sins of the prostitutes, the sinners who requested true healing both physical andspiritual, Peter, the Jews who crucified Him, and many others because Jesus came to the world to save it not tocondemn, to bear our sins and to deliver us from every evil. Jesus will give us rest if we trust in Him. “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give yourest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest foryour souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." Matthew 11:28-30 Our Lord is watchful over our lives. “The LORD watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of thewicked leads to destruction”. Psalm 1:6.Our Lord knows everything about us, we cannot hide anything from Him. “You search out my path and my lyingdown and are acquainted with all my ways”. Psalm 139:3

Our Lord will protect us if we live virtuously. “For God commands the angels to guard you in all your ways. With their hands they shall support you, lest you strike your foot against a stone.” Psalm 91:11-12.

With such a "tender God" caring for me, providing for me, watching my path by day, and guarding my couchby night– "I will lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety." Psalm 4:8

How soothing, in the hour of sorrow, or bereavement, or death, to have the countenance and sympathy of atender earthly friend. God, who is Emmanuel, God with us, is nearer, dearer, tenderer still; the Friend that neverfails; a tender God.

|ØDOUA’N:R ARTICLES

Question 1: Thereare many differentbibles. Which onemust be followed?

We have seen in ourprevious articles, thatthe Church drew up alist or catalogue ofinspired and apostolicwritings into which noother book should everbe admitted. This listthat we have in our

church is called the “Canon of the Holy Scripture”.The Bible used in the Armenian Catholic

Church (and the Armenian Apostolic Church) is theBible that was declared as Canonical at theCouncils of Hippo and Carthage in the fourth cen-tury. The Bible belongs to the church. Nobody hasthe right to make changes to it.

Question 2: Why my Bible contains morebooks than other bibles?

The Bible that you have is a Catholic-ApostolicBible. Until the sixteen century, seven books hadalways been part of it: Tobias, Baruch, Judith,Wisdom, Ecclesiasticus, I Machabees, II Macha -bees, together with chapters and versus of the Bookof Esther and Daniel.

Fortunately, Martin Luther did not take out theLetter of James, called by him “An Epistle of straw, with no character of the Gospel in it”, in the wayLuther dishonored the Epistle of St Jude, theEpistle to the Hebrews and the Apocalypse of StJohn, declaring them “not on the same footing asthe rest of the books.” Calvin and the Swiss andGerman Reformers followed Luther in denying theseven books of the Old Testament.

Question 3: Why were these books taken outfrom the Bible?

I don't want to be judgemental, but the scholarsagree that the discarded books did suit his views. For example, in The Lutheran Bible, it is said “Weare justified by Faith only”; the word “only” isadded and is not part of the Letter of St Paul to theRomans.

Question 4: How did we get the originalBible?

What we have now is the printed Bible; but beforethe invention of printing in 1450, the Bible existedonly in handwriting what we call manuscript. Whyis that we don’t have the originals written by StJohn and St Paul and the rest? Well, there are sev-eral reasons to account for the disappearance of theoriginals.

1) The persecutors of the Church for the first300 years of Christianity destroyed everythingChristian that they could lay their hands on.

2) We must remember, the material which theinspired authors used for writing their Gospels andEpistles was very easily destroyed; it was calledpapyrus of delicate quality, very frail and brittle.

3) Ancient works experienced the same fate. For example, only 15 manuscripts of the works ofHerodotus survived from the 10 century A.D., yetHerodotus lived 400 years before Christ. Can wesay, “I want to see the handwriting of Herodotus?”

4) The oldest manuscripts of the NewTestaments are in The Vatican Museum, BritishMuseum and in the Monastery of St Catherine inEgypt.

OU>TAGNAZOUJIUN PILGRIMAGESANCTUARIES VISITED DURING

OUR PILGRIMAGEOur Lady of Fátima (Portuguese: Nossa Senhora de Fátima, EuropeanPortuguese: is a title for the Virgin Mary due to her reputed apparitions tothree shepherd children at Fátima, Portugal on the thirteenth day of sixconsecutive months in 1917, beginning on May 13. The three childrenwere Lúcia Santos and her cousins Jacinta and Francisco Marto. The titleof Our Lady of the Rosary is also sometimes used to refer to the sameapparition (although it was first used in 1208 for the reputed apparition inthe church of Prouille), because the children related that the apparitioncalled herself the “Lady of the Rosary”. It is also common to see a combi-nation of these titles, i.e. Our Lady of the Rosary of Fátima (Portuguese:Nossa Senhora do Rosário de Fátima). The events at Fátima gained par-ticular fame due to their elements of prophecy and eschatology, particu-larly with regard to possible world war and the conversion of SovietRussia. The reported apparitions at Fátima were officially declared “wor-thy of belief” by the Catholic Church.

Camino de Santiago The Camino de Santiago, also known as el camino desantiago or the way of Saint James, are actually several hiking routes thatall lead to the town of Santiago de Compostela in northern spain. TheCamino Frances is the most popular camino, starting in Saint Jean de Piedde Port in France, and ending up about 30 days later in the town of Santiagode Compostela. The origins of the Camino de Santiago goes back one thou-sand years and it was an important christian pilgrimage route during themiddle ages, all walking to seek forgiveness from St James. It is though thatthe remains of the apostle saint james is buried in the Cathedral of Santiagode Compostela. In modern times pilgrims walk it for many reasons, not onlyreligious, and to be a pilgrim has changed its meaning. What attracts peo-ple to the camino de santiago today, I think, is the mix of adventure, seeingspain and its culture and the camaraderie that builds up over several weeksof walking. Pilgrims that walk come from all over the world and that cre-ates a great environment. Mix that with some good spanish wine and food, and you have the perfect experience.you choose not to stay in albergues.

Our Lady of Lourdes is a title of the Blessed Virgin Mary invoked byRoman Catholics in honor of the Marian apparitions which are said to havetaken place before various individuals on separate occasions around Lourdes,France. Most prominently among these is the apparition of 11 February 1858,when Saint Bernadette Soubirous, a 14-year-old peasant girl admitted to hermother that a “lady” spoke to her in the cave of Massabielle, (a mile from thetown) while gathering firewood with her sister and a friend. Similar appear-ances of the “lady” were reported on seventeen further occasions that year.Bernadette Soubirous was later canonized as a Saint, and Roman Catholicsand some Protestants believe her apparitions have been validated by the over-whelming popularity and testament of healings claimed to have taken placeat the Lourdes water spring. In 1862, Pope Pius IX authorized the BishopBertrand-Sévère Laurence to permit the veneration of the Blessed VirginMary in Lourdes. This Marian title, Our Lady of Lourdes has been widelycopied and reproduced, often displayed in shrines or homes, most notably ingarden landscape.

FAMA|NQA|IN LOUR:R COMMUNITY NEWSThe First Holy Communion in St. Gregory the Illuminator Armenian

Catholic Cathedral, GlendaleOn Sunday morning, May 5, 2013, an extraordinary activity was taking place at St. Gregory the Illuminator

Armenian Catholic Cathedral in Glendale. Parents and their children were conversing cheerfully in the patio. Whatwas the reason for this extraordinary activity?

On that day, 34 innocent youngsters were prepared to partake their first holy communion. An event which willremain always imprinted (sealed?) in their tender hearts.

The Holy Mass was offered by the Most Rev. Mikael Mouradian, Bishop for Armenian Catholics of NorthAmerica and Canada, with the participation of Pastors Fr. Krikor Chahinian and Fr. Andon Noradounghian.

It was touching to see the children seated on the altar, who were following the Holy Mass with reverence, andin turn reciting the prayers.

The Bishop gave a very appropriate homily and in a friendly and fatherly way explained to the youngsters themystery of the Holy Eucharist, praying that they remain always firm in their faith.

Then the children, with their parents, approached the Holy Altar and received their first Holy Communion. At the conclusion of the celebration of Mass, the children and their parents went to the Kouyoumjian Hall, where

the Ladies’ Guild had prepared a brunch followed by dessert. We congratulate the youngsters and their parents. It must be mentioned that Fr. Andon Noradounghian and Sister

Gayane Taslakian and Miss Sosi Madenjian selflessly dedicated themselves in preparing these youngsters for theirfirst Holy Communion, teaching them catechism in Armenian, English and Arabic, and sowing in them the seeds offaith and religion. We wholeheartedly congratulate and thank Fr. Andon Noradounghian and the abovementioneddedicated persons, wishing them vigor and perseverance.

|ØDOUA’N:R ARTCLES

1. Heraclitus was a pre-Socratic philosopher who theorized about Universal Flux. Heclaimed that time was forever changing and therefore never the same. By stating everythingis in a flux, Heraclitus theorized that no action could ever be repeated. He made this clear inhis famous example of the river: “We step and do not step into the same rivers…” In order tounderstand this theory, we must first understand that a river is a continuous flow of water.Because of this, the water at a certain point in time is no longer in the same spot after thatexact time. Therefore, by stepping into a river and then re-stepping into it, you are essential-ly stepping into two uniquely different rivers. “In the same rivers ever different waters flow”(Plutarch 70). This is justified by the previously stated fact that the water in the river, This doctrine is based off the principle that an object is defined by its individual components. In order to define a river, we must first observe each individual component. Thus, a river isdefined by a group of water molecules. Therefore, Heraclitus explained that since the watermolecules are always changing as the current flows, the river itself is always changing andnever the same. According to Heraclitus, “nor to touch mortal substance twice in the same condition: by the swiftness andspeed of change, it scatters and collects again, or rather, it is not again later but simultaneously that it comes together anddeparts, approaches and retires” (Plutarch 70). However, if the components of the river, or any object, are forever chang-ing, then how can any object exist over time? This poses an internal paradox that causes Heraclitus’ doctrine to questionitself because in order to accept that any object can exist throughout time, we would then have to refute that an object isdefined by its individual, ever-changing components. In Heraclitus’ words, “everything moves and nothing rests” (Plato69). Therefore Heraclitus’ doctrine would be called into question and so a person can step into the same river twice.

Heraclitus’ theories can be further understood through the story of the Theseus ship from Athens. The story dictatesthat, over time, a ship was renovated in order to replace the decayed planks and keep it afloat. In the end, the Athenianshad changed every single plank on the ship. This posed a philosophical inquiry to whether or not the renovated ship wasthe same as the initial ship. “The ship became an example among the philosophers…one side holding that the shipremained the same, and the other arguing it was not the same” (Plutarch Vita Thesei 22-23). According to Heraclitus’ view, the ship was a completely different ship once the first plank was changed. With every renovation, the boat became a newship.

Although his doctrine raises questions, it still sheds light on Heraclitus’ view of identity. As mentioned above, theriver analogy is based off the concept that an object is defined by its components. Therefore, an identity is based off of itsindividual subgroups at a certain time. Just as the river is identified as a group of water molecules, a person would be iden-tified by all the sub-components that make that person whole (arm, leg, hair, eye, etc…). It is important to remember, how-ever, that Heraclitus defined existence to be in an ever changing flux, and therefore a person, or object’s, identity will for-ever be changing and never the same.

2. Some of the extant fragments of Xenophanes appear to advocate a form of skepticism, while others seem to assertthe possibility of knowledge. In addition, Xenophanes seems to put forth a view of the divine as something he knows tobe true. In your judgment is he consistent or inconsistent and why?

Xenophanes was an early philosopher, poet, and religious critic born in 580 BC in Colophon. He is best known forhis skepticism, criticisms of popular religious beliefs, and conception of the divine. This conception was very differentthan that of the traditional and accepted beliefs of the Greek population of his time. Many of his views and idiosyncraticthoughts can be found deeply rooted in his many poems including his extant fragments on cosmology. However, as schol-ars have studied Xenophanes’ works, they have discovered many different views.

Xenophanes wrote, “For all things are from earth and in earth all things end…. For we all come into being fromearth and water” (Barnes 45). In this excerpt, Xenophanes states the origin of things and expresses his materialistic view.He continues to make this clear as he identifies “In earth and water all things which grow and come unto being” (Barnes45). These quotes show Xenophanes’ understanding that all things came from and can be identified by ori ginating from

the earth and water. Xenophanes contributes this materialistic view even to divinities as he defines them as material thingsof our world. For example, a rainbow is constructed of “a cloud, purple and scarlet and green to see” (Barnes 46).

While some of Xenophanes’ excerpts portray him as a materialist, others portray him as a Skeptic. On page 41,Barnes quotes, “And the clear truth no man has seen nor will anyone know concerning the gods and about all things ofwhich I speak’; for even if he should actually manage to say what is the case, nevertheless he himself does not know it;but belief is found over all” (Barnes 41). This Fragment clearly expresses Xenophanes skepticism as he calls to questionthe truth of the gods. He states that no man has ever seen or personally met any of the gods yet without this validation, man still believes and has faith in the gods. Therefore, the acceptance and faith we have in the gods are simply “believedas similar to the truth” (Barnes 41). Although this is a very convincing argument and view, Xenophanes contradicts him-self, “Not at first did the gods reveal all things to mortals, but in time, by inquiring, they make better discoveries” (Barnes42). Here Xenophanes states that we are never meant to meet or see the gods. We are merely to gain knowledge and “dis-coveries” over time by having faith in them.

These differing and contradicting Fragments cause me to view Xenophanes as being very inconsistent. As shownabove, Xenophanes incorporates materialism in his Fragments, yet later takes a more Skeptical approach to his works. However, his works contradict one another has he writes both about skepticism yet being certain. This change may besimply explained as Xenophanes being caught between multiple explanations and philosophies. Ultimately, his differingand contradicting views make him inconsistent.

6. Permenides is considered by many as a pivotal figure among the Presocratics, the one who might be looked upon asthe first true philosopher. In your judgment, what is (are) Permenides’ most seminal contribution (s) and why?

Permenides was a pivotal pre-Socratic philosopher born in Elea, located in Southern Italy. He was heavily influ-enced by Zeno’s paradoxes as well as other pre-Socratic philosophers: Empedocles, Anazagoras, and Atomists. Althoughhis exact birth year is up for question (540 BCE or 515 BCE), it is agreed that he found the Eleatic Tradition, or ratherthe Eleatic School of thought. He theorized and acknowledged that in life there were two “roads” of inquiry: the “Wayof Truth” and the “Way of Opinion.” He presented both of these in his book, which has surprisingly lasted through thecenturies.

“The Way of Truth” was Permenides’ personal account of what the world around him truly was while “The Way ofOpinion” was that of his predecessors. He strongly favored the “Truth” and rejected the “Opinion.” Permenides madeclear that people should not be subject to other’s beliefs and views. He urged each individual to use reason in order todevelop a better understanding of the world around him or her. “Judge by reason the battle-hardened proof which I havespoken” (Barnes 82). This “battle-hardened proof” Permenides spoke of was obtained reasoning only with valid andtruthful premises. If the premises are valid and certain, then the conclusions derived from them will likewise be truthful.

This idea of turning away from the previously accepted norm and choosing to forge one’s own path was a radicaland completely new trail of thought during Permenides time. Previously, all philosophers took their predecessors’ theo-ries and further expanded, analyzed, or critiqued them. However, Premenides strongly urged, “Do not let habit, full ofexperience, force you along this road, directing unobservant eye and echoing ear and tongue” (Barnes 82). For himself,in order to fully accept and approve anything, Permenides did not need to rely on his predecessors. Through logic andreasoning, he theorized that all could be understood. This is why Permenides disagreed with the “Way of Opinion” andurged the people to block their minds from traveling down this road of thought.

It is said that this method of deductive reasoning, supported by valid and certain premises was Permenides’ mostimportant contribution, and I whole-heartedly agree. As mentioned above, philosophers of this time had become far toodependent of their predecessors. With no incentive to think on their own, they merely accepted or questioned the theo-ries put in front of them. However, Permenides disagreed with this and urged not only his fellow scholars and philoso-phers, but also the people of his time to deductively and logically reason as they followed the “Way of Truth.” Thisemphasis on thought, in my opinion, helped many future generations as it presented them with the ability to reason situ-ations out for themselves, rather then have to depend on what their predecessors said. This only further helped stimulatean independent thought process that only lead to greater confidence in what a person believed in. In other words, beingable to logically reason a solution or concept was far more substantial and valid then basing your point of view on thatof another person’s outdated view.

VISIT TO SAINTGREGORY ARMENIAN

CATHOLIC CATHEDRAL

On May 7th, my 8th grade class-mates and I from Blessed SacramentCatholic School visited Saint Gregory theIlluminator Armenian Catholic Church. The Pastor, Father Krikor, celebrated Masswith my class to show us that even thoughthe form of Mass may be different, themeaning of the Mass is still the same.

The students learned about theArmenian Genocide, Armenian culture, and the life of Saint Gregory the Illu -minator. They were fascinated about ourhistory and shared some of their parents’stories as well. Father Krikor then showedus around the church.

My classmates were amazed at thedifferent vestments and the architecture ofthe Armenian Catholic church. They com-pared our church’s architecture to some oftheir churches, some of them stating thatour church is much prettier. We were thentreated to lunch with what my classmatescall “Armenian pizza” and ended the daypraying the Rosary in honor of Mary.
