The geometry has been imported from the IGES file, and, as most CAD models do, contains more than we need for our FE model. In the next section we'll discuss the types of elements we can use, but regardless of that, we want to simplify our geometry: starting with the geometry shown on the left, we want to end this session with the geometry shown on the right.

Thin-walled components require some care - you often have to zoom / pan frequently to ensure that you're actually selecting what you want to. it's easy to select a wrong surface by mistake! In this session, we create a new collector, and copy to this collector the surfaces that will form the basis for the FE mesh. Should we pick the inner or outer surfaces, or (perhaps?) a mid-surface? As we'll see in the next session,

the question is not critical for this model, given its dimensions and mechanics. After copying the surfaces we want, we trim them along one of the two planes of symmetry, delete the surfaces we don't need, and save the file.
