Our team of experts will help you build a database of test results and transformer profiles, and will evaluate and interpret your test results.

Rugged design for field use Rugged and reliable design providesthe accuracy of a lab instrumentwith durability for field use.

User PC DrivenThe M5200 uses DobleSoftware. User suppliedPC must have a mini-mum of 512 MB RAM .

Samples a wide spectrum of data More data points for greater accuracy and dependabilityof results.

More accurate than “Impulse” analyzersSignals don’t degrade at higher frequencies, and resolution is maintained at very low frequencies.

Reduced susceptibility to interference High signal-to-noise ratio at all frequency levels. Accurate even in the presence of electromagnetic “noise” of substations.

Calibration verification in the fieldUse the standard responses expected from the DobleM5150 to verify calibration in the field.

Fast, easy test connection Test connections to the transformer aresimple and straightforward. Just connectthe cables to the bushings and you’reready to test in minutes.

M5200 Technical Merits –The Three R’s

RangeThe M5200 uses a Sweep FrequencyResponse Analysis technique that pro-vides frequency response measurementacross the full range of 10 Hz to 10 MHz.1250 measurements, spaced logarithmi-cally at 1.2%, provide the highest qualitytest results. This frequency range coversthe most important diagnostic areas:

• Core and Magnetic Properties

• Winding Movement and Deformation

• Interconnections – Leads, Load TapChanger, De-energized Tap Changer

ResolutionThe M5200 measures the frequencyresponse at logarithmically spaced fre-quency intervals. A constant excitationlevel is maintained for each frequencymeasurement. The M5200 has the abilityto auto-scale each frequency measurementproviding an overall dynamic range 0 to–70 dB with a ± 1 dB accuracy. Thus, thecombination of the constant excitationlevel and the ability to auto-scale respons-es provide the highest possible resolutionand an accurate measurement of the apparatus under test.

RepeatabilityThe M5200 is a field-ready instrumentfor high quality measurements. Thesweep frequency approach, combinedwith Doble’s world class engineeringmeans that frequency response measure-ments are highly repeatable and even subtle changes can be used for diagnosticpurposes. The results can be interpretedas being a feature of the transformer andnot a function of the test set, arrange-ment of physical test cables or operatorperformance.

M5200In power transformers,

what you don’t see could hurt you.

Power transformers are subject to manykinds of physical damage that can benearly impossible to detect – until thetransformer fails!

System faults, short circuits, aging oreven handling during transportationmay compromise the mechanical struc-ture of a transformer. Because theseproblems are difficult to detect, theyusually go unnoticed and worsen overtime, leading to loss of performance andpossibly failure.

Until recently, your options for dealingwith these critical problems were limited.

The M5200 adds a powerful tool in your qualitycontrol and maintenance toolkit. Using SweepFrequency Response Analysis, the M5200 allowsyou to “see” inside the transformer and detect evensubtle changes in the mechanical structure of thecore and windings – without costly detanking.

With the M5200 you can ensure that transformersmeet mechanical specifications, diagnose problemsearly, and avoid unexpected downtime or internalinspections.

Whether you are a power utility or a transformermanufacturer, the M5200 is an essential componentof your comprehensive power transformer inspec-tion and maintenance program.

The M5200. Now you can see what you’ve

been missing.

You could ignore them and hope for thebest. Or, if you suspected damage, youcould detank the transformer to make a costly and time consuming visualinspection. And even that might notreveal the damage.

At Doble Engineering, we have built on our experience with the M5100 todevelop the latest generation of SFRA;the M5200. Input from users has beencrucial in this development making theM5200 both user friendly and efficientas a robust field instrument.

M5200DIAGNOSE problems early.

PREVENT expensive equipment breakdowns.

Take CONTROL.

Why wait for problems to develop? With the M5200’s non-intrusive test technique, you can test your power apparatus any time you suspect a problem. Or just use it as part of your regular maintenance program. Either way, you identify problems before they lead to failure, such as:

• Core movement

• Winding deformation and displacement

• Faulty core grounds

• Partial winding collapse

• Hoop buckling

• Broken or loosened clamping structures

• Shorted turns and open windings

A major advance in transformer condition analysis.

The M5200 uses a technique called Sweep Frequency Response Analysis, a proventechnique for making accurate and repeatable measurements. As compared to the“Impulse” technique, the Sweep Frequency Response Analysis technique is thepreferred method for making frequency domain measurements. Here’s how SFRAworks: The M5200 sends an excitation signal into the transformer and measuresthe returning signals. By comparing this response to baseline and other results(such as from similar units), you can identify deviations and confirm internalmechanical problems.

Two examples of SFRA output showing rawdata and trace differences.

• The SFRA techniqueCovers the full dynamic range andmaintains the same energy levelfor each frequency, providingresults that are consistent andaccurate. High signal-to-noise ratioacross the entire 10 Hz to 10 MHzfrequency range ensures validmeasurements.

• SFRA Analysis ToolsThe M5200 SFRA software hasanalysis tools that allow the user to identify any differences or areas of dissimilarity between two SFRAtraces. The two traces are dis-played on a chart, while the differ-ences between the two are plottedin dB values on a separate chart, asshown in the diagrams.

The user may set criteria to color thedifference chart in red, yellow andgreen depending on the magnitude ofthe differences between traces. Thisaids in the identification of the differ-ences in the original data.

The M5200 can “see” insidetransformers, so you candetect problems early, beforethey become costly failures.Use it:

• to improve the quality of your regular inspectionprogram

• to eliminate unnecessarydetanking and costly internal inspections

• to check new transformers to verify good condition

• to inspect for damage if the transformer has experienced mechanicalstress

• in case of system problems, like short-circuit faults thatcan damage transformers

• after earthquakes, lightning,or other environmentalevents

In addition, the user may set bandswithin the data chart – as shown by thevertical lines – between which correla-tion coefficients are calculated for thetwo traces. The higher the degree of correlation, the closer the two traces are, with the user able to set limits.

The correlation and difference analysisare the most powerful tools commercial-ly available to aid in transformer frequency response analysis diagnosis.

• The Impulse TechniqueRequires high sampling rates and highresolution to obtain a valid measure-ment. The applied impulse does notproduce constant energy across thespecified frequency, which can causepoor repeatability that is influenced by the non-linear properties of the testspecimen. If this method is not appliedproperly, then the test results may beinconsistent and unpredictable, lead-ing to poor and possibly erroneousinterpretation.
