GOD’S ADVICE TO FATHER

“My son, forget not my teaching,

keep in mind my commands; For many days, and years of life, and peace, will they bring you.

Let not kindness and fidelity leave you, bind them around your neck;

Then will you win favor and good esteem before God and man.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, on your own intelligence rely not; In all your ways be mindful of him,

and he will make straight your paths.”

Proverbs 3: 1-6

O God, Giver of Life and Father of us all, help me to be the kind of father to my children that You are to me. May I love them unconditionally, forgive them when they fail, counsel them when they doubt, lift them up when they fall, guide them in the darkness and walk beside them in the light. Show me, Loving Father, how to teach them, to play with them, to share with them and to pray with them. Thank you for my children; than You for my role as a father. Amen.

ST. RAYMOND’S CENTENNIAL 410 DAYS AND COUNTING!!!

On July 30th, 2009 we will celebrate the 100th Anniversary of St. Raymond’s Parish. Plans for our 18 month celebration that will include spiritual, social, historical and fundraising activities are beginning now. If you have any interest in being part of the committees being formed or have some ideas you would like to share, please contact the rectory in care of the Pastoral Council.

YOUth Group

On my retreat I’ve learned that God has His own plan for us set up. At times it may seem that you have fallen away but in the end all will be OK. Another thing that I learned was that God gave me fear to be stronger and tougher. He has helped me overcome tough things in my life. -Kevin Woehling (East Rockaway H.S.) I learned a lot about myself. I had a lot of fun; for example the games and movie. I thought that it was a fantastic time. -Tommy Emmerich (Lynbrook Schools) On the retreat, I learned how important it is to believe in yourself. Some of the people, I met showed this quality through how they have turned their lives around. Specifically, one of the men form St. Christopher’s Inn ( the shelter on the Graymoor grounds) approached me and welcomed us to Graymoor. He was very nice. He has turned his life from his problems and has started to believe in himself. I have great respect for him and what he has done. . —Renier Schepers (Lynbrook H.S.) I thought that the YOUth Group Retreat to Graymoor was a good experience all around. The grounds and the beautiful drive up were relaxing. The priests and our St. Raymond’s YOUth leaders made me feel safe. This retreat gave me a new way of looking at things. -Dan Traver (St. Raymond School)

MISSION NEWS Hi, my name is Greg Monaco, or in Guatemala I will be known as Gregorio. I am a student at Lynbrook H.S. I wanted to share with you why I am going on this

journey to a foreign country. The two main reasons I am going are: for the experience of seeing how the Guatemalans live and to try to do whatever I can to help them in their daily lives and make things easier for them. I am going to experience the culture and learn things that no text book could ever teach me. Of course there is always that such an experience looks good on a college application but that is just a small part of why I am going. I have heard Deacon Rich and some of the others who have gone in the past say that it is easier to go with a friend than alone and that is why I am going with my good friend Gerard. I am sure that when I return I will have plenty more to say. -Greg Monaco

Its not too late to donate small, lightweight musical instruments so the children in our sister parish in Guatemala can begin a music enrichment program. It is well known and widely recognized that participation in music and the arts can contribute significantly to children’s intellectual development. Thank you to Kevin Harrington, Maureen Schwartz and others who have made donations so far. Preferred instruments include recorders, harmonicas, small cymbals and other percussion instruments. Bring all donations to the Bishop Ryan House and be sure they are marked ‘Guatemala.’ Deadline: Thursday, June 19th. Any questions, call Anastasia Schepers, 599-3827.

SPIRITUAL ADOPTION PROGRAM

Everyone loves the beauty and innocence of a baby. As an expression of that love, we will begin our Spiritual Adoption Program this week-end. Members of our parish family will have the opportunity to spiritually adopt a child who is newly conceived this month and in danger of being aborted. You may adopt a baby individually or as a family simply by signing a pledge card (which is located in the pews of the Church) and pray “The Prayer of Life” (which is attached to the pledge card) each day for the next nine months. Signed pledge cards may be deposited in the box located at each of the Church entrances. The signed pledge cards will be placed on St. Joseph’s altar and remain there for the entire nine months of the program. Each month, in the bulletin, there will be information about the development of the baby. Since the infamous Supreme Court Decisions of Roe v Wade and Doe v Bolton, over 48 million babies in the womb have died through legalized surgical abortions (this number does not include those babies who have been killed through chemical abortion). Your prayers will not only help the baby in danger, but the mother to choose life over death for their little one.

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

In today’s Gospel, Jesus sends out the disciples to meet the needs of others. His admonition to them is the same challenge He makes to us: “The gift you have received, give as a gift.”

THIS WEEK’S TIME & TALENT SALUTE:

In gratitude for God’s gift of time and talent to salute: all our Parish Ministry personnel, Knight of Columbus and teens from St. Raymond School Junior Sodality and East Rockaway High School for giving our Seniors a delightful luncheon of appreciation for all they have done to our parish during the years in our name.

LIVING STEWARDSHIP Bishop William Murphy and his family wish to express their deep appreciation for the prayers and Masses offered for their dear sister Virginia on the occasion of her return to the Lord, April 17th, 2008. Be assured of a remembrance in their prayers as they thank God for her life and for the bonds of life and love that are ours in the Holy Spirit.

P r i n c i p a l ’ s Corner Though I’m not quite sure how it happened, we are in the final full week of school – and then it’s only for the students in grades 1-7. We certainly were zapped last week with the heat wave making the classrooms (especially on the top floor) our own little saunas! Well, somehow we made it through the week (lunchtime in the cool air-conditioned cafeteria did help). Hopefully, the wicked weather will take a break till we finish the school year. Our last FULL DAY of school (including AFTER CARE) is Wednesday, June 18th. We begin noon dismissals on Thursday, the 19th. Classes will be finishing up their work this week. The 3rd and 4th grades are going to the Whaling Museum in Cold Spring Harbor on Monday. Some of the other classes are planning special activities on campus for the closing of the school year. We will have our regular lunches Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday (Baked ziti, deli sandwiches and pizza). Please note that our annual AWARDS ASSEMBLY will take place on Monday, June 23rd. As many folks are aware the school publishes a SCHOOL DIRECTORY each year to assist the parents, advertise for local businesses and, obviously, raise money for the school. The easiest way to do this is to solicit ads from local businesses during the summer. We could really use some help with this endeavor. School parents can certainly receive service time for helping. Anyone who may be interested in lending a hand (or even placing an ad) can call Pat McCormack directly at 596-2179. Thank you in advance for your generosity and assistance. Congratulations to our 8th grade graduates and their parents for their wonderful achievements over the years! A list of awards will be published in next week’s bulletin. We also want to congratulate our kindergarteners on finishing their first official year in school. What happy celebrations there were on Thursday as they ended the year! Bravo! Congratulations to our youngest ones as well on the completion of their programs. We want to wish a Happy Fathers’ Day to all the men in our lives. May God shower you all with His choicest graces on this special day! God bless you all.

With gratitude to the parishioners of St. Raymond for your prayers and support,

Bishop William Murphy

The sizzling weather last Saturday did not keep our seniors from joining their friends at the Parish Social Ministry/Knights of Columbus Luncheon. Everyone had a great time and we are happy that so many were able of come.

Thank you to all the Social Ministry and Knights members, who worked so hard planning and executing this delightful event. We want to thank our servers, Matthew Conetta, Matthew Gazarian,Shannon Enderle, Milan Brusic, Erik and Yonik Gomez, and our welcoming hostess, Anna Mc Manus. We also wish to thank our Parish Social Ministry Artists, who brought in their beautiful paintings for all to enjoy. The Senior Luncheon is a fine example of a joyous celebration made possible by the sharing of God’s gifts of time, talent and love.

Needed: Pancake Mix, Syrup, Jam or Jelly, Ketchup, Mayonnaise, Laundry Detergent, Diapers Sizes 3, 4, 5, and Baby Wipes.

Something to think about! Did you know that this Saturday is FLAG DAY?! Our flag is an important symbol of our country, so everyone should always have respect for it. Every time you see an American flag passing by in a parade, put your hand over your heart and whisper a little prayer “God Bless America!” It is also “Hooray for You Day”! Make a list of all the good things about YOU. Whisper to God and tell Him all the things you like about the way He made you and ask Him to help you BE all the things He MADE you to be. Also, remember to say “Thank You” to God, for all the good things in your life. Last, but not least, here is another good reason why we should go to Mass: We need to experience something bigger than ourselves. When we go to Mass, we share in the death and resurrection of Jesus. When we offer our ordinary lives to God through Jesus, we enter into God's great plan for the world. We are strengthened by the Eucharist and sent out into the world to bring the Gospel message to all people. The Mass gives meaning and purpose to our lives. It helps us develop a sense of wonder and awe. It helps us to see that there is something bigger than ourselves. Amen to that!

11TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

The scriptures, my friends always seem to fit in with the “Here and Now”, two thousand years plus. Matthew’s Gospel message today, and it happens to be “Father’s Day”, encourages us to see ourselves as disciples. The Apostles grow into their responsibilities, as all disciples must. We are reminded of our own fathers and how wise they were in their teachings as we grew into adulthood and became responsible fathers, grandfathers and heads of families. Even now, as our deceased fathers shine in the glory of God’s Kingdom, are the wisest ever.

Jesus uses “lost sheep” wandering from the fold. Today’s ills result in many different ways in which we find “Sheep without A

Shepherd.” The truth is, they are our sisters and brothers in physical and spiritual need. It is never true when we pass on our Baptismal Vows to be disciples and followers of Christ by a simple response,” There is nothing I can do.” Few of us have any contact with sheep, but most of us can relate to a lost dog, when we see their pictures posted around town. We not only sympathize with the owner but we have pity for the dog. In our world today, we encounter people who are like these lost dogs, or sheep without a shepherd,. They don’t always bring out our sympathy and pity. Sometimes they are viewed with suspicion or a touch of disdain or scorn and who are these “lost souls”, of today...Are they the “Illegal Aliens”; or those living in a regional culture which glorifies violence, rebellion, crime and sexual decadence. Is it the religiously illiterate, children without family stability, the old and forgotten, who have no one to affirm them or give them meaning to their lives. We know that Jesus was moved with pity. What is our response to these ills? Does it sound like, “these people are dragging our country down the drain or they love over there, the other side of the tracks and it stays that way; it’s none of my business. You probably must become convinced that by our baptism we were sent out as successors to the apostles and their mission. My friend, the one thing that is needed, for sure, is when good people do nothing. We must act someway, somehow, no matter how little it seems, remember “ a drop in the bucket is one more than before.” Direct action by word and example is often more possible than we might think and remember, “never underestimate Prayer, it is not something we resort to when real action is out of reach. Our mission is to boast of God through our Lord Jesus Christ; through whom we have received reconciliation. Amen -Deacon Guy Donza
