THIS WEEK BIG ISLAND

Holei Sea Arch along the coastal

section of Chain of Craters Road

By Fern Gavelek

TIMING! Plan plenty of time to visit Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. A World Heritage site, HVNP has much to see and do. It’s best to spend the night at Volcano House or nearby Volcano Village to best enjoy your road trip to and from the park; it’s located on the southeastern end of the island, Map G:K12.

SEE RED! Stay after dark to see red. At press time, a red glow emanates from the ongoing gas eruption of Halema‘uma‘u Crater. Peer right into the action at the Jagger Museum Overlook. The billowing plume is the result of molten activity in the crater’s lava lake. The park is open 24-7 so check it out after dinner or before dawn, when it’s less crowded—you may hear lava bubbling below! Map F:B20.

INFO! Eruption activity can change so stop at Kilauea Visitor Center; it’s staffed by rangers 9 a.m.-5 p.m. daily, 808-985-6000. Find a daily posting of free interpretive programs and catch a short film, “Born of Fire…Born of the Sea,” followed by a current eruption update, at the top of the hour. For an online eruption update, visit nps.gov/havo/planyourvisit/lava2.htm.

SCIENCE! Watch real-time scientific monitors in action inside Jagger Museum. Colorful, large murals by the late art historian Herb Kawainui Kane depict the Hawaiian pantheon, including Pelehonuamea, the deity of volcanoes. Open 10 a.m.-7:30 p.m. daily with “Life on the Edge” ranger talks at 2, 3:30 and 5 p.m.

HIKE! Go subterranean with a walk through Thurston Lava Tube. A picturesque trail rich with bird song and towering tree ferns descends to the 500-year-old Nahuku tunnel that’s illuminated by lights. Caves like this form by traveling magma.

MORE! Other park attractions illustrating the awe of volcanism: Kilauea Iki Crater, Devastation Trail, Keanakakoi Crater, Pu‘u Loa Petroglyphs and Chain of Craters Road. Visit nps.gov/havo/planyourvisit.

41 Hawai‘i State Bird, the

Nene (Hawaiian Goose)Proclaimed the state bird in 1959, the nene resembles the Canada Goose in appearance. Find it during the spring-summer on golf courses, where the birds hatch their young, or

in Hawai‘i’s national parks. The geese favor the native foods of the uplands when not rearing goslings and can maneuver harsh terrain including rocky lava f lows. Pronounced “nay-nay,” the bird is classified as an endangered species with about 900 living on Hawai‘i Island, and as many as 1,100 more combined across Maui, Kaua‘i and Moloka‘i.

It may be hard to concentrate on your game in Hawai’i. After all, the lava-lined fairways provide a striking contrast to the manicured greens dappled by the canopies of palm trees. And then there’s the ocean beckoning for your attention. But you can do it—just remind yourself that many Big Isle courses were crafted by the biggest names in course design. Waikoloa Village Golf Club offers a Robert Trent Jones Jr.-designed, championship course with large, well-bunkered and undulating greens. Wide landing areas encourage aggressive tee shots. Rated the “Big Island’s Best Bargain” by Golf Magazine, the course is frequented by local residents. Conveniently located above the Kohala Coast, the course is the second oldest on the Big Isle and treats golfers to mountain and coastal views. Hawaii Tee Times offers golf booking services at over 40 courses throughout the state. Play on the same courses as the pros, choosing your preferred course terrain. Hawaii Tee Times helps visiting golfers find either challenging or leisurely play.

Think BIG on the Big Island; it’s four-fifths the size of Connecticut. You can fit all the other Hawaiian Islands into the state’s youngest island with room to spare—and it’s still

growing! The sprawling island is full of landscape-describing superlatives, including having the largest projected landmass between the sun and Mars—Mauna Loa volcano. See the sites, accompanied by expert narration, on a comfortable, guided tour. Clark’s Hawaii Tours focuses on themed tours like the Island Art & History Tour to share Hawaiian royal treasures at Hulihe‘e Palace, followed by visits at local art galleries and historic landmarks and a tasty lunch at celebrity Chef Sam Choy’s Kai Lanai.

Other guided adventures include the BBQ, Kayak, Snorkel & Hiking Tour and the Kona History & Plantation Tour. Clark’s also offers a full beach gear rental desk and airport shuttle where “one call does it all.” Check in at The Beach Shack.

Roberts Hawaii takes you to see the entire island and its impressive natural wonders on the Grand Circle Island tour. Sightsee in air-cond itioned comfort and leave the driving to state-certified guides for the ultimate vacation travel experience on four Hawaiian Islands. Visit Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park on the Evening Volcano Special Tour where you spend the day exploring the isle’s unique geography, including Mauna Loa, the world’s largest volcano, and Kilauea, the world’s most active volcano. Learn about volcanology, the isle’s current seismic activity and the culture that sprang up around volcanism.

Discover Hawaii Tours gives passengers an insider’s perspective on the way to a zipline adventure, snorkel cruise or visit to Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. Discover also offers island hopping options to O‘ahu, Maui and Kaua‘i.

What’s ‘omiyage’?In the islands, the practice of giving an omiyage, or gift, is specifically practiced when a person returns home after some time away for vacation or a business trip. In Japanese culture, the omiyage was traditionally a food item

made in the area a person had visited, and then shared with family, friends or coworkers upon returning home. In English, omiyage is translated as “souvenir.” And nowadays, the gift itself has become just that. Omiyage can be anything that touts the location of a destination such as key chains, totes, magnets, t-shirts, postcards, framed professional photographs, calendars, as well as food items made or grown in the respective region—delicious Kona coffee comes to mind. Well, at least you won’t get any rocks or minerals—and if you do, and they’re from from Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, return it!

ALOHA SHIRTdid you know? The humble aloha shirt; part icon and part working man’s everyday lay-around-the-house shirt. The Hawaiian aloha shirt is a symbol forever linked with Hawai‘i. It was in 1931 that a young college graduate named Ellery Chun came home during the Great Depression to work in his father’s dry goods store in Honolulu, who created the first aloha shirt. He registered the name “Aloha” in 1936 and ran a print ad in a local newspaper and first coined the phrase “aloha shirt.” The rest is history.

B ig Isle jewelry is inspired by island plants, sea life and history. Precious Hawaiian black coral is the official state gemstone. State, federal and international laws protect the sustainable harvest of black coral in designated waters. Black coral grows in deep-sea colonies, taking 50 years or more to mature. The birthstone for June, pearls come in a variety of hues and shapes. Tahitian or black pearls are organic gems formed by the black lip oyster; they are French Polynesia’s largest export. South Sea pearls are produced using the large, 12-inch Pinctada maxima mollusk and is commercially harvested in Indonesia, Australia and the Philippines. Akoya pearls come from the akoya oyster, which is found and farmed primarily in Japan and Asia. Freshwater pearls are created using freshwater mussels farmed in the U.S. and Asia. HAWAI‘I’S BEST on a plate

Hawai‘i Regional Cuisine (HRC) was born 22 years ago

in 1991 when a group of 12 island chefs experimented with food concepts and developed what is now recognized worldwide

as HRC.

Eastern and western culinary traditions were combined to

create unique Pacific-inspired dishes that incorporated locally

grown and raised products from island farmers, plus the freshest

seafood from the Pacific Ocean.

The 12 original pioneers of Hawai‘i Regional Cuisine are chefs Sam Choy, Roger

Dikon, Mark Ellman, Beverly Gannon, Jean-Marie Josselin,

George Mavrothalassitis, Peter Merriman, Amy Ferguson Ota,

Philippe Padovani, Gary Strehl, Alan Wong, and Roy Yamaguchi.

Restaurants offering HRC include Huggo’s in Kailua-Kona, Bamboo Restaurant, plus Roy’s

Waikoloa Bar & Grill and Merriman’s in Waimea.

Made fresh dailyAny day that begins with a hot cup of coffee and a freshly baked pastry is a good one. Pick up fresh-baked breads, croissants, pastries and pies, or deli sandwiches, quiche and sweet desserts for a picnic on a white-sand beach, along the hiking trail or to enjoy while on the road. Saving something sweet for a late-night bite doesn’t hurt either.

The plate lunchLocals know the term and all it entails when you say, “Let’s go get a plate lunch.” We know it’ll be really good: it’ll be enough food to hold us till dinner, it might make us nod off in front of the computer, and for those trying to cut down on intake, it means a really good lunch for the next day. A local plate lunch is really the working man’s go-to for lunch because it’s so filling. And we enjoy it anytime of day. It’s typically a protein or combo of proteins, two scoops of white or brown rice (available at some places), and either mac or tossed salad. Favorites include teriyaki beef, hamburger steak, chicken katsu, mahi mahi and beef stew. There are even places offering gourmet plate lunch selections for the “elevated” palate—garlic chicken, seared or blackened ahi, short ribs and so much more. Ask a resident where his/her favorite plate lunch place is, and give it a try.

Hawai‘i Island offers cuisine to satisfy every palate. Here are two more options to savor: Enjoy an exotic taste sensation using local products! A tasty, traditional Turkish meat, döner at Dan-o’s Döner is made with local, grass-fed beef that’s stacked by hand on a spit daily. Döner can be enjoyed as a kebab, a wrap and in a dinner plate or salad. Accompaniments include house-made falafel, vegetable toppings, feta and spicy sauces like garlic-yogurt or sriracha-mayo. Did you know that in ancient Hawai‘i, men and women were forbidden to eat together? However, in 1819, King Kamehameha II put an end to the kapu (law or rule), which then allowed everyone to gather and enjoy their meals. Thus the lu‘au was born. At a lu‘au, no one is a stranger, and all are welcomed with the spirit of aloha. It’s a time to enjoy Hawaiian cultural activities and performances, a grand feast and creating new friendships. Presented by Traditions Hawaii and the renown musical Lim family, Mauna Kea Beach Luau headlines a spectacular fire knife dance and includes performances by the award-winning hula halau, Na Lei ‘O Kaholoku. The incredible buffet offers 30 scrumptious food choices that include the highlight—savory kalua pig, smoked in the underground imu (oven).

Bountiful Big IslandIn addition to being a worldwide leader in the harvest of

popular macadamia nuts and orchids, Hawai‘i Island is the only place in the United States that grows vanilla and cacao beans (the raw material for chocolate). Most farms are open to the public for visits where you can learn about the growing and

production processes.

Designated a Marine Life Conservation District in 1969, Kealakekua Bay State Historical Park holds an abundant and

diverse population of marine life within its pristine borders. As the island’s largest sheltered natural bay, Kealakekua is home to an ancient heiau that remains sacred to the Hawaiian people. On its north side, Ka‘awaloa Cove offers some of the island’s

best snorkeling. A pod of Spinner dolphins also rest here during the day. As with all the islands’ natural spaces, the protection of

this haven is of prime importance while enjoying its riches.

Here’s how it works:as you know, trading CO2 (exhale) for O2 (inhale) occurs in billions of alveoli cells in the bronchial tubes & lungs, but not in the 4-6 inches from the trachea to the mouth hole—the stretch known as dead air space. A primitive snorkel triples dead air space, so you re-breathe the same air, which is like wearing the same sox or not changing your skivvies. Burning lungs with a heavy heart & head afflict the snorkeler breathing CO2. Do you really feel like sighing in an elevator? Now comes the FRESH-AIR SNORKEL: Mofl02™ with Jarvic IX-style, aortic valvulation & demarcation twixt in & out more tangible than that between church & state! With a double-valve twin chamber, the Mofl02™ clears easy with a double huff, for no headaches & more umph in your glug. Mofl02™ osmotic convection delivers 99% fresh air on every breath.
