VIEWPOINT

By Daniel BrinThe Golden State still shines,

thank you very much. We’ve been hearing a

steady drumbeat of doom from conservatives who support the campaign to unseat California’s liberal governor, Gavin Newsom. If they can generate enough outrage in their own ranks and get everyone else to feel listless and discouraged, maybe they’ll succeed in electing one of their own to statewide office - something they’ve been unable to accomplish through the usual electoral process in many years.

After all, this strategy worked in 2003; why not try it again?

These days, conservatives are loudly blaming Newsom and Democrats for a range of ills that weren’t of their making, from crime to homelessness to the high cost of living. They claim Californians are leaving the state in a “mass exodus” because of high taxes and oppressive regulations that are stifling economic growth.

Malarkey!I’ve already detailed in this

publication that crime, overall, is continuing its plunge since the early 1990s. Yes, crimes of violence have risen alarmingly during the COVID pandemic, but this is a nationwide phenomenon that is occurring in both red states and blue states. We still don’t know exactly why.

Did someone mention Prop.

Protect our Golden State’s Incredible SuccessGuest Editorial:

47, which raised the threshold for felony crimes to $950? Well, in Texas, that threshold is $2,500. California’s threshold continues to be among the lowest in the country.

How about homelessness? This phenomenon is driven mostly by the scarcity of affordable housing. That’s the result of a century of restrictive zoning rules that conservatives, as well as some liberals, largely

oppose relaxing.High cost of living? That’s

what happens in a place that is among the world’s most powerful magnets and generators of wealth.

California still is, frankly, a groovy place to live, and it’s not just because our state has some of the most spectacular scenery on the planet.

On June 14, Matthew A. Winkler wrote in Bloomberg.com: “No one anticipated the latest data readout showing the Golden State has no peers among developed economies for expanding GDP, creating jobs, raising household income, manufacturing growth, investment in innovation, producing clean energy and unprecedented wealth through its stocks and bonds. All of which

underlines Governor Gavin Newsom’s announcement last month of the biggest state tax rebate in American history.”

Winkler continues: “By adding 1.3 million people to its non-farm payrolls since April last year - equal to the entire workforce of Nevada - California easily surpassed also-rans Texas and New York. At the same time, California household income increased $164 billion, almost as much as Texas, Florida and Pennsylvania combined, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

“No wonder California’s operating budget surplus, fueled by its surging economy and capital gains taxes, swelled to a record $75 billion.”

Yes, this is happening in the time of COVID — a testament to the resilience, diversity and innovation driving the fifth-largest economy in the world.

All these things and more should give us confidence that California has the potential to confront its challenges and overcome them. But doing so will require leaders like Gavin Newsom who believe in the power of government to solve problems in partnership with business, technologists and the public.

Our Golden State will continue to shine — if we affirm hope over fear. Let’s start by defeating an ill-advised recall.

California still is, frankly, a groovy place to live...

Jungle Cruise is a Nostalgic Voyage You Won’t RegretBy Katie Sterling

It seems that only Disney has that special magic that can take an antiquated theme park ride that debuted in 1955 and transform it into a blockbuster movie in 2021. After all, successful films based on amusement park attractions are few and far between...if at all. And yet, Disney has managed to succeed in making the most “Disney-like” adventure movie the company has crafted in a long time. For those who haven’t seen Jungle Cruise, let me explain

Dwayne Johnson (The Rock) and Emily Blunt star in Jungle Cruise.

this somewhat nonsensical declaration...

Jungle Cruise follows Dr. Lily Houghton (Emily Blunt) who enlists the aid of local skipper Frank (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) to take her

but each character, no matter how major or minor, plays their perfect part in elevating the excursion. Houghton’s brother MacGregor (Jack Whitehall) is more prone to apertifs at the club than adventure in the jungle and

down the Amazon in search of the elusive Tree of Life, whose petals hold the power to heal any ailment. Yet, like most journeys that can only be classified as adventures, there are enemies, unexpected turmoils and an array of roadblocks along their path. As they travel closer to their destination in Frank’s ramshackle boat, secrets are revealed and relationships blossom, making the stakes that much higher.

It goes without saying that the A-list leads add that extra oomph to a storyline that holds pretty strong on its own

yet, in never failing to support his sister, provides the perfect comic relief in foil to her role. Jesse Plemmons (who will never not be Landry from Friday Night Lights to me) takes on the role of baddie Prince Joachim, a villain so ridiculous and so fitting of a Disney deviant. So how, in my opinion, is this the most “Disney” Disney movie that’s been curated in quite awhile?

Well, in recent years, it seems as if it’s been a Marvel world and we’re all just living in it. While the intricately woven

Pueblo Bonito Pacifico in Cabo San Lucas fit the bill to a tee. Just two and a half hours away by plane - but eons away from reality, the resort is isolated on its own stretch of the Baja Peninsula. The pueblo-style buildings curve around and down to a meandering pool and the sparkling beach. Our beautiful room had its own large balcony looking out to the ocean. We could hear the surf at night, and could see and smell the ocean when we awoke.

And what to do when you have to do nothing? We spent several days in our private cabana on the beach - going from lounge chairs on the sand to the large shaded cabana bed. Reading, napping, talking, sipping, all just steps away from the surf.

When we needed to cool off we walked a few steps to the large, beautiful pool.

Grabbing a pina colada from the swim-up bar, we floated around and met other escapees from the rat race, happy just to relax and let the water flow around us.

If you’re so inclined there are plenty of activities at the resort - from water exercise to yoga on the beach. There’s a full gym (I’m told!) and miles of sand to walk. We chose to chill out and take the wine tasting and tequila tastings over the treadmill.

Service is a key element at Pueblo Bonito - from the staff that bring you lunch in your cabana, the wine steward who presented a line-up of surprisingly great Mexican wines, to Israel, our private butler, who made sure all our needs were met - from massage appointments at the beautiful, full-service Armonia spa, to a tee-time at the unbelievable gorgeous, cliff-hugging, Jack Nicklaus Signature Quivera golf course. Israel made a relaxing stay even more relaxing with his attention to our every request.

Pueblo Bonito Pacifico is adults-only, and all-inclusive, meaning that all meals and alcohol are included. Our room-fridge was stocked at our request with bottled water, Diet Coke and Pacifico beer. The staff at the swim-up bar kept busy keeping pool lovers happy with water, beer and everything from margaritas to mojitos.

There are restaurants at every corner of Pueblo Bonito, and depending on the day and your appetite you can choose from sushi to salmon to steak. All restaurants on property are available, but dining spots at other Pueblo Bonito resorts are also included, and there are free shuttles between properties. I would suggest making reservations before you go, however, as many were full. Many of the premier restaurants also carry an additional surcharge - but are definitely worth it.

The premier dining experience has to be The Steakhouse at Quivera. Indoor and outdoor seating has you right on the sand, and the fine dining is unparalleled. We started with a succulent crab cake and slices of tuna wrapped in smoked bacon. But there were also brisket patties and beef filet tartar, as fitting the theme.

At The Steakhouse you order, of course, one of their dry-aged prime quality steaks, which you can cut like butter. But there is also the catch of the day, charcoal grilled, shrimp in

lobster butter or fresh lobster tail. Our server brought us a delightfully refreshing gin and

cucumber cocktail garnished with fruit to start - just one of the many specialty drinks we were served over the course of the week.

The wine steward also presented us with a list of both Mexican, California and European wines to accompany our meal. Again - we were waited on hand and foot. Service here is not intrusive, but just impeccable. We found that to be

true across the resort. Our dinner at Peninsula another night also

sat us directly over the sand, as we dined on seafood stuffed clams, served in a still smoking stone bowl, and a wonderful catch of the day from the Sea of Cortez, pickled in a fish-cilantro broth of avocado and lime. Main dishes included fresh grilled fish, which you can get in any restaurant, free range chicken marinated with bitter oranges, charred pork and grilled lobster.

If it sounds like we spent a lot of time restaurant hopping - we did. Lying poolside all day works up an appetite! Breakfast every morning was either at the large buffet at the resort’s signature restaurant Siempre at the heart of the resort, or overlooking the ocean at the VIP lounge. My favorite thing to do on

any vacation is to order breakfast in bed, and since in-room dining is part of the all-inclusive service, I luxuriated one morning and caught up on reality watching CNN.

We also took a shuttle up to Pueblo Bonito Sunset and ate at the fabulous La Frida, which offers a unique approach to Mexican cuisine in a AAA Four-

Diamond restaurant. Again - amazing scallop carpaccio with fermented cactus pad, annatto and tequila, followed by salmon trout with an oyster ragout, and enchiladas with duck carnitas. Here the steward wheels a cart full of wines, tequilas and liquors to accompany your meal, which you enjoy on a bougainvillea-filled patio.

Sushi and sashimi lovers can flock to Pescados at Pueblo Bonito Pacifico and dine alfresco, or enjoy lunch and dinner as well at Siempre - with its Mediterranean cuisine infused with Mexican flavors.

The highlight of our trip was the incredibly romantic Sunset Teepee Experience, where we

sat on the sand under a palm-frond teepee and were served an incredible dinner cooked right on the beach. A full moon shone on the water, the waves lapped quietly at our side, and an incredible team brought us round after round of specialty cocktails, followed by an amazing tomato-based bisque with lobster chunks, then perfectly grilled filet and jumbo shrimp, with crisp local vegetables.

We did tour the newest addition to Pueblo Bonito Pacifico, The Towers - their resort within a resort, with 47 guest rooms, six suites with private plunge pools and a Presidential Suite. This hosts the VIP lounge overlooking the water where we had breakfast, and cocktails one evening.

We were spoiled beyond belief, and our experience made us vow to return again next year when work and worries become too much and we need a week where we have to worry about absolutely nothing.

Safety Concerns: We felt completely safe the entire trip. We were picked up at the airport and taken directly to the resort, where you go through two security gates before entering. Masks are mandatory indoors, and we felt totally secure on the flight home as all passengers entering the U.S. must pass a COVID test, given at the resort. Our one day trip into Cabo itself was fun and fine, with tourists and locals mingling, shopping and dining.

If you do not get seven to nine hours of sleep at night habitually, read on for new medical information that could threaten your health in your future.

People age 50 or 60 who regularly slept six hours or less each night were more likely to be diagnosed with dementia than those whose regular shut-eye pattern ran the prescribed health seven or more hours of nightly sleep.

Results of one of the longest running trials with human participants has been published in the scientific journal Nature Communications. The study which started in 1985 covered a time frame of over 35 years with 8,000 adult participants supported by the University College London.

A group of European researchers looked at the survey data and linked the data with dementia diagnoses in electronic health records. Since inception of the study, participants have been surveyed every four to five years. Results as follows: 50-year olds

Lack of Shut Eye Can Lead to Dementiawho were sleeping six hours or less a night had a 22% higher risk of dementia later in life while 60-year olds were 37% more likely to develop the disorder.

The British civil servants reported their sleep duration, and some wore sleep trackers overnight to confirm that their self-reporting was accurate.

While the authors cautioned that the findings can’t establish whether less sleep causes dementia, they said the new study adds to sufficient shorter-term research showing that too little sleep is directly linked to the development of the disorder.

Other studies have shown that interruptions preventing people from getting a good night’s sleep are also linked to eventual onset of dementia.

Past research also suggests that obesity, high systolic blood pressure, and mental health disorders like depression increase the risk of sleep issues and dementia.

By Janey M. RifkinThe office is back, but

COVID might have other plans. Although many companies, large and small, have set tentative dates for “return to office” - mostly in September or October, the best laid plans (well, you know where this is going...). In every instance, they are surely watching the situation closely.

In weeks, the Delta variant has become the most contagious version of the COVID-19 virus to be identified and it is now the most common variant across California and the entire U.S.

Companies large and small are exercising caution about the return-to-office issues. Among subjects which are under consideration are mask requirements, pandemic safeguards such as physical barriers for desk arrangements, and, of course, whether proof of vaccine injections and/or testing will be required to determine whether incoming workers might be carriers of the virus infection.

Protecting public health is the main consideration. The larger companies and corporations will, in many instances, set the scene for the smaller ones to follow.

Netflix, as an example, has made no secret about wanting to get its employees back in the office. That will be no small task as the streaming giant has some 9,000 employees. They have not (at press time) set a return mandate although Netflix’s executives are encouraging their workers to

return to the office at least part-time after Labor Day.

Many workers at other companies remain worried. The Delta variant is actually accounting for 83% of analyzed infections and is the most transmissible of all in the Covid family. It has been essential to assure staffers of a secure position whenever it is deemed advisable to return to the office and be in close proximity to fellow workers. As for the immediate future, the office may be back

sooner rather than later but the public health status reigns. Some companies are pushing back dates.

One very important finding to come out of the pandemic is the apparent fact that the work gets done remotely! Working from home has very seldom been sub-par; in fact, staffers of most job descriptions prove infallible!

TIME FOR A CUT?

By Allie PrioreThere is no denying that

when it comes to mental health, it takes a back seat in importance, urgency and believability to physical health. It’s as if because it cannot be seen, it is harder to understand, comprehend and appear real. Given the recent events concerning Simone Biles, I wanted to take a moment to talk about the taboo of mental health in everyday life.

I think having conversations about mental health is extremely important. It appears that in recent years more people are struggling with their mental health daily. Yet, when voicing concern or asking for help, there seems to be a lack in urgency to help and rather, the focus switches to verifying the credibility of the claim. This confuses me. Why is it that if an individual says their mental health has been compromised, they must prove it?

The lack of value placed on the well-being of one’s mental state is alarming. As someone who struggles with high anxiety, which often affects my mental health, I believe it is unfair to judge or deem what is valid or true regarding someone else’s mental state. It is sad to see the increase

The Taboo of Mental Health

in mental health struggles over the last few years. To me, it reflects the world we live in – even more specifically the way we live. The rise in social media, the need to have instant gratification, the constant comparison to others all contributes to the state of our mental health. And not in a positive way.

More so, acknowledging mental health is acknowledging

the struggles of everyday life. It is recognizing that anxieties, stress and pressures exist – and affect our mental state. Take a moment to think back to a time you felt stress or anxiety. How did your mind feel? Did you feel foggy, agitated, irritable or overwhelmed? Were thoughts racing through your mind faster than you could comprehend? Did you feel a sense of unease or discomfort that you couldn’t quite pinpoint? That is what is called paying attention to your mental health. Just like physical reactions to stress or anxieties are real so are mental and emotional reactions. Do not disregard the way you are feeling or what you are thinking – it is just as important.

Luckily, people are becoming more comfortable speaking up about mental health. The more people that are vocal in recognizing mental health matters, the less taboo it seems and the more validity it gains. It is becoming more common to acknowledge that mental health is in fact important and real. Simone Biles, Naomi Osaka and Selena Gomez are just a few influential young people who are finally

taking a stance. They are not only standing up for themselves, but for all those who suffer with their own mental health. By being bold and vulnerable in sharing their own experiences, they are breaking down the stigma and opening the portal for conversations to be had.

I have faith that moving forward there will be plenty of discussions concerning mental health. The more people become open with their own struggles and triumphs the more comfortable others will feel to share their

Dignity Health - Northridge Hospital Medical Center is proud to announce the expansion of its cardiovascular surgery services with a new minimally-invasive alternative to treat atrial fibrillation (Afib).

The Watchman™ left atrial appendage (LAA) closure is a

permanent heart implant used to treat Afib not caused by a heart valve problem.

AFib affects the heart’s ability to pump blood normally and can cause blood to pool in the LAA, leading to the formation of a clot. “When a blood clot escapes from the LAA and travels

to another part of the body, it can cut off the blood supply to the brain, causing a stroke,” shared Dr. Ali Sovari, Dignity Health Electrophysiologist. “The Watchman Implant fits right into a patient’s LAA, and is designed to permanently close it off and keep those blood clots from escaping, while reducing the challenges that come from a lifetime of blood thinners.”

The small, flexible implant

is about the size of a quarter and is placed into the patient’s heart during a minimally-invasive procedure, and oftentimes never needs to be replaced.

“Offering the Watchman, which permanently reduces stroke risk, is the next step for Northridge Hospital in providing high-quality care that our community deserves,” added Paul Watkins, NHMC Hospital President.

REAL ESTATEA Day’s Adventure: Bridge to Nowhere

By Katie SterlingAs a born and bred

Angelino, “hiking” has always been a leisurely pastime to get some exercise while enjoying the variety of mountain and beach views this city has on offer. I use quotes on hiking as most

following a massive flood that changed the landscape of the canyon. Nowadays, it’s the beacon for hikers who traverse through rocky landscapes to reach this pinnacle (and for the brave who also have the opportunity – for a not so small fee- to bungee jump off of it).

Embarking on this hike

is the closest I think I will ever come to feeling as if I’m on the show Survivor. Thankfully, no eating of inedible critters was involved, but the hike does give off the vibe of being dropped in the middle of nowhere. Seeing as how the landscape is vast and quite disorientating, some blessed

natives will tell you these local excursions are more easygoing than particularly challenging. A great day out with friends or an ideal backdrop for influencers out “in the wild.” So, when I was asked to venture outside of my usual haunts, I happily agreed to embark on the Bridge to Nowhere hike. Turns out, this was hiking with a capital H. Needless to say, five hours and 11 and a half miles later, my unexpected Huckleberry Finn-like excursion gave new meaning to what hiking truly entails.

The Bridge to Nowhere hike, located in Azusa, is a 10-mile round trip hike that spans across the East Fork of the San Gabriel River with approximately 900 feet of elevation change. The half-way point of the excursion brings you to the aforementioned Bridge to Nowhere, a bridge that was built and then abandoned (Continued to page 16)

REAL ESTATEREAL ESTATEBy Neill Simmons

The highlight of August is the Perseid meteor shower on the nights of the 11 and 12. NASA has reported that 2021 is going to have more activity than normal. Perseid is popular because the weather is warm and the number of meteors per hour is high. Do everything to try to get away from the city lights, such as going to our beaches or the mountains, where the sky is darker and, hopefully see three times more than if viewing in the city. If you get up after 3 p.m., the likelihood of seeing more meteors will increase.

Also on the 11 and 12 the dazzling planet Venus will be low in the west. Notice the beautiful thin crescent Moon next to Venus which makes for a great sight!

Look east after 9:00 p.m. each night in August to see the ringed planet Saturn. If you have access to a telescope, make sure to see the famous rings around the planet. Saturn’s biggest moon is called Titan, which is bigger than the planet Mercury. NASA is planning many missions to Titan in the near future.

After 9:30 p.m. Jupiter, the king of planets, rises in the east and is spectacular in brightness. Jupiter is visible until dawn. Make sure to point

Every night in August watch the great constellation

Scorpius in the south. This distinctive shape is one of the most famous zodiac star patterns. There will be 18 bright stars in the constellation with one bright red star called Antares. Make sure to look at this constellation with binoculars and see how many of the seven star cluster you can see within it.

When outside, look straight up and notice the fifth brightest star, Vega. It is the brightest star of the giant Summer Triangle. This is a fun pattern to show your friends. Turn your vision to the west and quickly notice the bright orange

star, Arcturus. Compare these two bright stars to each other.

In August, the famous “Big Dipper” is still hanging by its handle in the north. Look to the right of this pattern to see the Big “W” rise in the night sky, which

is the constellation Cassiopeia, the vain queen.

On Wed-nesday, August 4, look northwest at 8:26 p.m. to see the International Space Station (ISS) come over us. At 8:29 the ISS will be directly overhead and easy to spot. The ISS will be up for over seven

minutes as it moves toward the east. Tell your friends that the ISS is traveling at 17,200 miles per hour and can make one orbit of the Earth in 90 minutes.

franchise has mutated upon itself again and again to produce films that only serve to build upon its own universe, classic Disney-driven movies have slightly fallen by the wayside. Yes, there are the iterations of remakes and origin stories but something wholly original has felt lacking in the queue. Jungle Cruise seemingly lets Disney return to being Disney. It calls on the themes that essentially built the mousy empire in the first place: adventure, exoticism, ancient curses and anthropomorphism. It’s a movie that comes alive through the screen with an adventure that feels nostalgic. In all honesty, I went in curious to see the movie but wasn’t expecting my sub-par assumptions on the movie to be totally blown out of the (river) water. It’s a voyage you won’t regret embarking on.

Jungle Cruise, directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, is currently in theatres and streaming on Disney+.
