  • PATRICIA BARBER SET TO RELEASE HER CONCORD DEBUT, SMASH, JANUARY 22, 2013

On Smash, her January 22, 2013 debut on Concord Jazz, Patricia Barber reiterates her unique position in modern music as a jazz triple-threat imaginative pianist, startling vocalist, and innovative composer (international release dates may vary). With a new band and a dozen new compositions, she also continues her two-decade crusade to retrieve the ground that jazz musicians long ago ceded to pop and rock: the realm of the intelligent and committed singer-songwriter, tackling even familiar subjects (like love and loss) with a nuance and depth beyond the limits of the Great American Songbook.

Much of Barbers magic lies in setting these words to music as fully evocative as it is coolly provocative. Many of her arrangements attain a thrilling friction between style and substance. (For a defining example, turn to Redshift, in which Barber weds the science-geek lyric itself a miraculous marriage of physics and love to the gentle lull of a bossa-nova beat.) Throughout the album, her Chicago-based quartet comprising the superlative rhythm team of bassist Larry Kohut and drummer Jon Deitemyer, with the edgy and arresting John Kregor on guitars functions as a translucent extension of Barbers own musicality, while her piano work enjoys a prominence that some of her newer fans may not previously have experienced.

After her long association with Premonition and then Blue Note Records, Barber self-released her two most recent albums recorded at Chicagos legendary Green Mill, her weekly showcase for more than two decades and had no plans to sign with anyone else at this point in her career. I didnt have a contract, or even a recording in mind, she states. I assumed that when I had a group of ten or so new songs I would probably put it out myself. Halfway through this process, Barber received an offer from Concord, which she promptly turned down: I was really enjoying the freedom of not having a label, especially in this environment, and just doing what I always do trying to advance myself musically, practicing a lot, and locking in on what I consider a really good band.

But the persistence of Concord producer Nick Phillips won out. He came to see me, and he reminded me so much of Bruce Lundvall, Barber recalls, referring to the former Blue Note president with whom she worked closely. I had been grieving the loss of that professional relationship. And then Nick mentioned that he has great respect and admiration for Bruce. So we hit it off personally, and thats what it takes for me.

  • While many contemporary jazz vocalists use the Great American Songbook as a canvas for harmonic and rhythmic puzzles, it can be a breath of fresh air to hear an album that pays homage to the birth of these beautiful compositions. With a clear tone and a concise delivery, Sam Fazios new album, I Wish You Love, presents each song in a way that is reminiscent of its inception on the Broadway stage. Backed by some of the finest straight-ahead musicians on the jazz scene, I Wish You Love is a pleasant journey of song with tasteful and supportive arrangements.

The album features several standards from Broadway and Tin Pan Alley, with wonderful septet arrangements from Fazios pianist, Chris White. Fazios voice is attractive with a strong sound and support. A self-proclaimed crooner, Fazio indeed demonstrates song interpretations that are reminiscent of seminal crooners such as Dean Martin and Bing Crosby. In particular, Fazio feature many chestnut songs that were made famous by Sinatra, including You Do Something To Me and Ive Got the World on a String. Meanwhile, White serves not only as a top-notch arranger on the whole album, but also proves to be a supportive and swinging accompanist over Fazios vocal stylings.

Although he demonstrates considerable panache throughout, Fazio shines to a greater extent on the albums ballads. A particularly unique choice, his final tune is a cover of the 80s hit Missing You by John Waite. The tune, which fits surprisingly well into the idiom as a duo ballad between Fazio and Brown, has a melancholy ethos that seems to embody the intimate longing of the album. Andy Browns accompaniment is intimate and warm, providing a soft and romantic foundation for Fazio. The musician line-up is rounded out by a swinging rhythm section that includes Joe Policastro and Bob Rummage, and some of the best hornmen in Chicago, including Art Davis, Jim Massoth and Tim Coffman. Fortunately for the listener, Fazio gives these wonderful musicians plenty of solo space creating a terrific balance between his voice stylings and inventive improvisations. On one or two tunes, such as the Rodgers and Hart classic I Could Write a Book, Fazio hugs the original melody so closely that his interpretation comes off as rhythmically stiff. That aside, I Wish You Love is an emotive and refined nod to the early vocal jazz crooners.

  • The Eleventh Hour: Live At The Green Mill features guitarist John Moulder showcasing his original compositions with a stunning quintet. To put it succinctly, this recording represents modern jazz at its best. Moulders compositions are amazingly creative and stimulating, taking fascinating twists and turns and also giving his talented bandmates the freedom to explore and take his pieces in unexpected musical directions.

The group performs Moulders compositions with tremendous skill, and they musically blend in a way that sounds as if they have been playing together for several years. Moulder has long been recognized as one of the finest guitarists in Chicago. On this recording, his excellent playing contains hues of Abercrombie and Scofield but he plays with a modernist sparkle all his own. Much like another great modern guitarist, Pat Metheny, Moulder writes thoroughly composed tunes with unusual forms and harmonies, as well as soaring lyrical melodies. Geof Bradfield is one of the top modern saxophonists on the scene today. He plays virtuosic, colorful solos and, in particular, it is fascinating to hear him let the rhythm section play him in certain parts of this recording. Jim Trompeter ratchets up the intensity of many tunes with his galvanizing solos. Larry Gray and Paul Wertico display uncanny musical sympathy, reacting to every musical twist and turn, while taking excellent solos themselves.

Moulder begins the live recording with a full tilt burner entitled Proclamation of the Unexpected, followed by African Sunset, an oblique 5/4 tune that makes great use of the guitarists pedal effects and features dazzling bass accompaniment from Gray. Moulder has long been a master of solo guitar intros, as he ably demonstrates on his masterful introduction to Cold Sea Triptych. The intro leads to a wonderful swirling guitar ostinato. Only after wonderful solo turns by Trompeter and Moulder does the tunes main melody appear, performed by Bradfield.

    A GROUP EFFORTSINGLE MALT RECORDINGS

Spend enough time around me, and youll inevitably hear me go off on a tangent on how Chicago, once upon a time, was a hotbed for musicians that played people jazzyou know, the kind of jazz that anyone could get intothe unwavering ebullience of Pops, Gene Krupa or Benny Goodman; the earthy grit of the Ramsey Lewis Trio; or the never ending stream of gutbucket funk for brainiacs that was Eddie Harris.

Heck, even the punk rock energy that the Vandermark 5 brought to excitable audiences at the Empty Bottle! For all the insane amount of talent you can find within the vicinity of any venue in Chicago or the suburbs that will book jazz bands, sadly, Chicagos Jazz scene has largely lost its taste for a righteous groove. Chicagos penchant for that brand of foot tappin, finger snappin, neck movin, funky, hard grooving jazz has waned, and that makes me want to weep.

Enter Chris Greene, or, more precisely, The Chris Greene Quartet. While Greenes name is on the marquee, make no mistake about itthis is a band. And as a band, theyre able to do things that pick-up groups and bands relying solely on a solid knowledge of the Real Book just cant. The interplay is tight, they can and do turn on a dime, adding in a vamp here, extending a section there without sounding timid in the slightest. Their book is largely original, and when they do break out a standard, they make sure you know whos playing it.

And those originals are tricky, odd-metered, funky and hard grooving affairs that make you (well, maybe you, but definitely me) glad that someone has decided that its okay to be solidly funky within the confines of a straight-ahead jazz band again.

    SPLIT DECISIONCHICAGO SESSIONS

Chicago Sessions strikes again with another all original program. For this latest release, however, instead of a Chicago legend like Larry Gray or Paul Wertico theyve tapped one of the up-and-comers on Chicagos vast jazz scene. Drummer Makaya McCravens debut disc, Split Decision, is an interesting listen from the first note, and one that fans of modern jazz will be excited to hear. Piano trio discs can be daunting endeavors. The history encompassed in that format is amongst the heaviest in jazz. Classic discs by Bill Evans, Chick Corea, Bud Powell, Oscar Peterson, Keith Jarrett and a host of others loom large over todays pianists and their repertoire. This is why its so refreshing to take a listen to Split Decision if theres a point of reference to seen, its Esbjrn Svensson, which makes for an exciting disc full of twists and turns. None of them are all that unexpected, but the scenery is nice nonetheless. But this is hardly a retread of ESTs material. Instead, Makaya and crew bring a very Chicago-esque sense of earthiness to the proceedings. Tim Seisser is probably to blame at least a little bit for thathis tone, feel and ideas would not be out of place on a well thought out modern R&B disc. Andrew Toombs sense of groove and space is really nice. Keith Jarretts influence comes to mind, and not just because he scats with his own playing. And McCraven holds the whole thing down with a lot of panache, skill and taste. Together, these three are making some music.

One of the common threads throughout Split Decision is a driving sense of forward motion to the disc. On Split Decision and Jhos Beat, no one could call it funk, but youd have to be stiff or dead to say that they arent funky. Tashas Tune, however, is funky, driving and pulsating, with some nice tension and release happening between sections of the tune. McGregor Bay is the epic of the CD, and it plays like it. The song breathes, it ebbs and flows, and when it finally catches fire a few minutes in, watch out. And McCravens solo on this one is beautifulplaying around and working with ideas coming from Toombs, the trio builds up the song to a fever pitch, only to bring it back down for a gentle landing.

If more modern jazz sounded this well constructed, I dont think there would be a need for roundtables concerned about the future of jazz. Discs like Split Decision (and theyre far too rare) are outstanding because theyre exciting even at their most mellow. The group interplay alone is worth the price of admission, and this ones a no-brainer for fans of groups like EST, The Bad Plus, and Brad Mehldaus trio.

At 36, trumpeter Roy Hargrove has firmly established himself as among the premier players in jazz and beyond. Ever-stretching into more challenging and colorful ways to flex his musical chops, Hargrove has left indelible imprints in a vast array of artful settings. During his tenure on the Verve label alone, he has recorded an album with a hand-picked collection of the worlds greatest tenor saxophonists (With the Tenors of Our Time), an album of standards with strings (Moment to Moment) and, in 2003, introduced his own hip hop/jazz collective The RH Factor with the groundbreaking CD Hard Groove (swiftly followed by the limited edition EP, Strength). Hargrove has also won Grammy Awards for two vastly different projects. In 1997, Roys Cuban-based band Crisol (including piano legend Jesus Chucho Valdes and wonder drummer Horatio El Negro Hernandez) won the Best Latin Jazz Performance Grammy for the album Habana. And in 2002, Hargrove, Herbie Hancock and Michael Brecker won Best Instrumental Jazz Album, Individual or Group, for their three-way collaboration Directions in Music.

FitzGeralds has been a gathering spot since it was built in the early 1900s. Up to 1925, the frame building at 6615 W. Roosevelt was a roadhouse used as a hunting lodge and sporting team headquarters. As more buildings rose along Roosevelt Road, the club was home to several nightclubs, the best-known being The Hunt Club, which flourished through the 1950s and early 60s--acts included Turk Murphy, Bob Scobey and Lill Armstrong. After the Hunt Club closed, the space became the Deer Lodge, complete with pool tables and a fortune teller.

Jim Sellers is a Chicago based jazz pianist, having been lucky enough to have performed with some great musicians, including Wynton Marsalis, Frank Catalano, Spider Saloff, Luba Mason, Ava Logan, Art Davis, Bill Yancey and many others. Jims interest in jazz began in grade school when he discovered Daddio Daleys radio program on what was then WXFM. With a lot of tenacity and a little help from his older brother, Jim learned how to play the blues and to read music having no formal lessons until he was in college. Still, by the time he was studying music as an undergraduate, he was proficient enough to be selected to perform in a trio with guest-artist Wynton Marsalis. He went on to earn a Master of Music degree from DePaul University in Chicago.

    LINDY ENDRES

For Lindy Endres, music played a bit of a different role in the beginning. Finding the perfect song to choreograph and dance to was key, as Lindy dreamt of becoming a professional dancer one day. Her childhood was filled with an array of dance styles, recitals and show choir competitions, always being labeled the dancer, never the singer. Upon graduation from Sauk Prairie High School, Sauk City, WI, Lindy attended UW Stevens Point to receive her BA in dance. With her goal in sight, Lindy dove into the world of college dance, only to become sidetracked by the musical productions UWSP had to offer. These shows ignited Lindys flame for singing, a talent which she thought she would never desire. Being cast in multiple musicals paired with private voice lessons created a newfound goal; to become a professional singer.

Hw C M FTHE HARRIS GROUP

The Harris Group delivers an approach to progressive jazz that focuses on more than improvisation. Influenced by Joe Beck and Steps Ahead, The Harris Group offers jazz that will no doubt stand the test of time. Although it is the basis of their repertoire, The Harris Group knows the audience for their music is broad, not defined by jazz alone. The Harris Group knows how to please an audience that is looking for meat and blood rather than fleeting hits.
