THIS WEEKS THEME: STATISTICSIn maths when we collect information about people we call it data and statistics is the
name we use for collecting data, displaying it and answering questions with it.
Data is collected about each of us from the day we are born. My sons each have a red
book, given to them by the midwife, in which their date of birth, time of birth and weight at
birth were recorded. You might have one too.
Other kinds of data are collected throughout our lives. This could be data about our
illnesses, our addresses or phone numbers or some tests marks.
You might also have heard about cookies on a computer or mobile phone. These are
collecting data about what sites we are looking at.
Any information can be data.
THIS WEEKS THEME: STATISTICSYou might remember that at the start of the year the Year 5s collected some data to see if
the caught being good system was fair. We can use data to answer questions or to show
us if something is really as we think it is.
Data is a really powerful tool. That is why we have to be careful who we give our data to.
We need to understand how someone is using our data before we give it to them.
The skills this week will therefore be looking at how we collect, display and use data to
answer questions. As usual work out what level you are at first and then get stuck in.
On Friday there is a special activity using all the things we have learnt about statistics so
there are only four slides at each skill this week.
Every one should do the project on slides 55 and 56 on Friday.
SKILL 1 QUESTIONS FOR EVERYONESee if you can answer these questions
for everyone. The answers are on the
next slide:1. Which picture shows all of Ben’s
toys?
A BC
2. Draw your own
tally chart for these
toys.
SKILL 1 ANSWERS FOR EVERYONE1. Picture B
Even if you got these questions correct I want you to watch this clip on tallying. Many people just count and
then write down the tally but this is not the point of tallying – it is meant to be part of the counting and should be
done as you go along: HTTPS://WWW.YOUTUBE.COM/WATCH?V=GBBLGB15UKM
If you found these questions easy move on to Skill 2 Questions for Everyone (orange slides).
If you want some more tallying practise do the Skill 1 activities on the blue slides.

If you want some more practise at pictograms have a go at the activities on the Skill 2 (orange)
slides. Otherwise move on to the Skill 3 Questions for Everyone on the green slides.
SKILL 2Note: Pictograms can also be called picture graphs or just charts so in some of these clips and
questions they are called by these names. However they are all pictograms because they all use a
picture and a key to represent the information.
Watch this clip about drawing pictograms: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CSQ3EHkFQqw
These pictures show some children’s favourite animals. Draw a pictogram to show this
information. If you are good at drawing animals you could draw the actual animal, if not draw
a circle to represent an animal.

SKILL 5 QUESTIONS FOR EVERYONE
If you have made it all the way to this skill
level you are obviously very good with
graphs. So your task for this week is to
practise interpreting all kinds of graphs. If
you get stuck go back to the slides on
that type of graph and practise a bit more.

TASK FOR FRIDAYOur task for today is to use our statistics knowledge to ask a question, collect data to
answer it and display that data in a graph or chart that you can draw.
The question should be about something that interests you
(because this week is all about you!).
You can get your data from a book, the internet or you could collect it yourself.
Here are some example questions you could gather data about but I think you can think
of some better ones. I would love to see your work so send it in to admin or Facebook.
Which team scored most
goals in the Premier
League this season? Which are the strongest
Pokemon?
How many different mini-
beasts can I find in the
garden?
Who is the
tallest person
in my house?
