    Area of interaction: Human ingenuity

    Changed way of living forever!

Considered as one of thegreatest inventors the world ha

    s

    ever seen!

Despite his numerous brilliantinventions and innovations,

several of his ideas were absolute

    duds.

    Was Thomas Edison a

    genius?

This is what he had to say aboutit..

    "Genius is 1% inspiration and

    99% perspiration. A 'genius' is

    often simply a talented person

who has done all of his or her

    homework.2

this were the first newspaper ever published in arailroad train

Edison attended public school for a total of 12 weeks

The boy is backward. All he does isasks questions.

    Nonsense I will teach him

    myself!

    "My mother was

In 1866, at age 19, Edison moved to Louisville, Kentucky,

    working for The Associated Press

The night shift allowed him to spend most of his time

    reading and experimenting

In 1868, Edison returned home to find his mother was

falling into mental illness and his father was out of work

He ventured to Boston, landing a job for the Western UnionCompany6

By the end of the 1920s Thomas Edison was in his 80s and he slowed down

somewhat, but not before he applied for the last of his 1,093 U.S. patents, for

an apparatus for holding objects during the electroplating process.11

Three factors in combination are generallyrecognized as contributing to Edisons success:

    1) A durable incandescent material

    2) Elimination of air from the bulb-a better

    vacuum

    3) A filament material of high resistance11

LIMITATIONSEdisons light bulb did not last long, so inventor Lewis Latimer improved the

light bulb by developing carbon filaments that lasted longer!!!It cuts down on candles manufactured, big maintenance cost, wastedenergy when there is heat going off the bulb, it is very fragile-the light bulbcan break very easily in a vibrational environment!!!

    APPLICATIONS

The light bulb changed the world's industry -- businessesnow could dramatically improve production availableby running around the clock. The world changed interms of leisure, too, as people who for centuries hadretired with the sunset now ventured out far more oftenat night for social reasons.

PHONOGRAPH The first great invention developed by

Edison in Menlo Park was the tin foilphonograph

Movement of the paper tape through themachine produced a noise resemblingspoken words when played at a highspeed12

    Thomas Edison

    Interdisciplinary Project

Experimenting with a stylus (hard-pointed instrument like a large needle) on atinfoil cylinder, Edison spoke into the machine

Do you know the first words

    ever recorded?

    "Mary had a little lamb."

LIMITATIONS APPLICATIONSPrior to Edison, only the

written word was availablefor recording history; with his

inventions of the phonographand motion pictures, sights

and sounds could berecorded and preserved for

    the ages.

The phonograph doll wasinvented by Thomas Alva

Edison in the late nineteenthcentury, following his

invention of the phonograph.Dolls had critical techniquewas borne of phonograph

    recordings.12

The Kinetoscope was a motion picture projectorinvented in 1888

On August 24, 1891, Edison filed the patent forthe camera (kinetograph)peep-hole viewer(kinetoscope) set-up, indicating the film widthto be 35mm and the possibility of using acylinder for future upgrades.

    Interdisciplinary ProjectLIMITATIONS

    APPLICATIONS

Since the film rolls were not long enough and sturdy enough, Edison and hiscrew were not able to build a device based on Mareys technique. Afterinvented, Edison developed his usage of kinetoscope.

    Motion pictures forever changed

how mankind was entertained. Nolonger many people need to travellong distances to see a show orhear a concert; they could go to alocal movie hall!

    THE FAILED INVENTIONS

The greatest failure of Thomas Edison's careerwas his inability to create a practical way to mineiron ore.

One concept that never took off was Edison'sinterest in using cement to build things.13
