Accomplishments Thomas Jefferson accomplished many useful things in his lifetime. He built his home, Monticello. He was both president and vice president. Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence and the Virginia religious freedom law. He also started the Lewis and Clark expedition.

Background Information. Jefferson was born April 13, 1743 in Shadwell, Virginia. He was born to Jane Randolph and Peter Jefferson. He graduated from the college of William & Mary with high honors and became a lawyer.

Family Life Thomas married Martha Wayles Skelton. They were married happily for ten years, until she died. They had six children, however, only two made it to adulthood.

MonticelloThomas Jefferson built his mansion called Monticello in 1768. As well as Jefferson and his family living here, he also had about 600 slaves that he kept there.

Presidency

Thomas Jefferson was President from 1801-1809. He was the 3rd President of the United States of America.

Louisiana Purchase

Thomas Jefferson made the Louisiana purchase in 1803. He wanted to expand the West Coast. After this purchase he began the Lewis and Clark expedition. This expedition was to get an idea of the resources in the area.

Statue of Freedom. The Virginia Statue of Religious Freedom was drafted in 1777 by Thomas Jefferson. It allowed you to choose your own religion, rather then being told what to believe in.

Declaration of Independence The Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776. It was mainly written by Thomas Jefferson. It states peoples rights and laws.
