WHERE ARE THE MEN? Rob Robinson
Betty Bivins gave me a note about visiting ladies’
day at a congregation in another city. She told me
that at this ladies’ day, unlike the similar events we
have at Thomaston Road, there were no men! And
that made a big difference to her. I’m sure she ap-
preciated the preparations and the activities at the
event, but here is how she described her reaction
when she realized that guests were expected to
stay and help clean up afterwards:
When the program was over, I picked up my purse to
leave. My daughter told me that we had to clean up
and set the room in order for Sunday. I told her that I
don’t know how to do that. At Thomaston Road, the
men dressed in black pants, white shirts and ties. They
wait on us. We only have to sit and eat. If we drop a
napkin, one of the men is there to pick it up. Some even
have a napkin across their arm. The only time we have
to get up is to go to the bathroom or to fellowship with
each other. Our men support us and make sure that we
have a wonderful day. My daughter asked, “Are the
men in your meeting?” I told her that they are in the
kitchen preparing everything. We don't have to get up
to get anything. All we have to do is say what we want
or what we need and the men are there. Actually, I do
know how to clean. It’ just that the men at Thomaston
Road have spoiled us and I am so very proud of the men
and of this congregation.
Thanks to Betty for sharing her affirmations about
this church. We already have another ladies’ day
coming up on Sept. 24. It will be a great event be-
cause the men and the women at this congregation
know how to serve. It was our Lord Jesus Christ,
who came to give his life as a ransom for many,
who also said that he was among us as one who
serves. Sometimes we are privileged to be served
by others, and sometimes we are given the chance
to serve others. This church provides many such
opportunities for our members. Make sure that you
are one of the reasons this church is known for
serving others.
LOVE IS … Letson McCoy
Recently, I heard a lesson by David Shannon on the im-portance of 1 Corinthians 13. He mentioned the fact that there were several characteristics of love that must be looked at in order to become more like Christ. After all, Christ was the embodiment of all the features of love mentioned in the Bible. His example, along with the fact that God is love and it comes from Him (1 John 4:7-11), should encourage each one of us to evaluate deeper what love truly is and how it affects our lives. With this thought in mind, for the next several weeks in my articles I want to take a look at what love is accord-ing to God’s standard. Hopefully, we will all be encour-aged to grow in our love and relationship with God. So, let’s look at the first attribute of love.
1 Corinthians 13:4 says “Love is patient…” In the origi-nal Greek language the word that is used here means to suffer long or be longsuffering. According to Greek lexical aids, the word used for patient here means to exercise understanding and patience towards a person. This type of patience and love is described in 1 Thessa-lonians 5:14-15 and 1 Peter 4:8 when they say, “And we urge you…be patient with all men. See that no one re-pays another with evil for evil, but always seek after that which is good for one another and for all men…Above all, keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins.” Solomon said this, “He who covers a transgression seeks love…”
There might be many times in our lives that someone wrongs us personally, our family, or someone we care about. In those instances, the easy thing to do is retali-ate. However, we are called to a higher standard of love, and this love is absolutely characterized by pa-tience and longsuffering. Some might respond, “You don’t know how much they hurt me. How could I ever forgive and be patient with them?” While thinking about that question think about the way God through Christ has forgiven each one of us when we hurt Him so badly with the sins we commit. What is even more amazing is that God continues to forgive on a continual basis (1 John 1:5-2:2). Even after being put on the cross, Jesus asked the Father to forgive all who put Him there (Luke 23:34). We should learn to love in this same way.
Is there someone you need love and be patient with? The struggle of doing this might be difficult, but re-member that when we love and are longsuffering we are being imitators of God as His children (Ephesians 5:1-2). Love is patient!
