4 | The Thompson Center on Lourdes

If you look up Christmas in Wikipedia, it states that Christmas is an

annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, observed

primarily on December 25 as a religious and cultural celebration among

billions of people around the world. Others say the main reason nowadays

why people celebrate Christmas is to give and receive presents. Some celebrate

with elaborate decorations, parties, gifts, and merriment. For many Christmas, can be

lonely and isolating. While others don’t even recognize the day.

So while you may or may not celebrate Christmas, during this holiday season let us all be

patient (yes – even to the driver who cut us off), love those around us, and make peace

with an estranged friend or family member. Be “present” – put away the iPhone and all the

technology and be in the moment. Granted – we may be using technology to connect

with our loved ones this year! If you’re able to make all your hugs last just a moment

longer and use the word "love" in your conversations. Appreciate your family, even those

that try your patience. Be more accepting of others and situations – we never know what

someone else is going through. Celebrate your time together - be it for a moment or a

week. Take a long walk; listen to your favorite holiday music; dance like there is no tomor-

row. Taste all the desserts, especially the cookies and homemade candies (yes…even all of

us on diets). Be optimistic. Give thanks. Laugh more. Celebrate life, because it is so

precious. Make the holiday last as long as possible. I’m wishing that this season brings you

happy memories to cherish always. Our experiences and celebrations will be different

this year – but the reason for the season will be the same.

May the spirit of Christmas visit you this holiday season, bringing you all the love and joy

in the world. Merry Christmas!

Thank You Ray Zuelke

8 | The Thompson Center on Lourdes

In September, Ray Zuelke stepped down as the Board President of TCoL.

Ray will remain on the Board of Directors and will lead the fundraising

efforts. Thank you doesn’t express the gratitude for everything that Ray has

done for the Thompson Center on Lourdes.

It’s no exaggeration to state the very existence of the Thompson Center on

Lourdes would not be a reality without the vision, leadership and can-do

attitude of Ray Zuelke. The sudden closing of the Thompson Community

Center in downtown Appleton in March of 2016 was an upsetting event that affected many of

the Fox Cities vulnerable elder adult population and their families. Literally within a couple

weeks a transition of Appleton’s only Senior Center and its activities was under way as Ray

coordinated a tenant agreement with St. Bernadette Parish on East Lourdes Drive.

The next two years proved to be a testament to Ray’s determination and perseverance for this

labor of love which now is The Thompson Center on Lourdes. Behind the scenes he wore many

hats as he single-handedly recruited an impressive and active Board of Directors and led the

charge as its Chair. Ray identified, recruited and hired staff and volunteers to serve a growing

and grateful senior population as word of TCoL spread. Ray worked with the parish and the fa-

cility was brought up to city code for business zoning in 2017. In 2018 the electrical was upgrad-

ed and air-conditioning was installed. Then in May 2018, after he secured legal assistance, TCoL

received its 501c3 nonprofit status, which was a major turning point in being able to fundraise to

ensure the sustained existence for TCoL. Once again Ray led the team through remarkable

fundraising efforts that have put TCoL on sound financial footing.

Ray, congratulations on a monumental achievement that serves to enrich the lives and enhance

the personal growth of so many of our senior population. The Board of Directors, Staff, Volun-

teers and Participants thank you for serving as the first President on Board of Directors of

TCoL. With heart-felt gratitude and sincere appreciation for a job more than well done, the

Thompson Center on Lourdes here by officially designates the TCoL Billiards room as the

Ray Zuelke Billiards Room.

Honoring Marilyn Peterson

16 | The Thompson Center on Lourdes

Marilyn is a woman small in stature, with a large amount of caring, generosity,

humor, and giving of herself. She loves her God, her family, her country, and her

“Civic League”. Civic League has been a part of her life for many, many years.

Potlucks, dinner shows, dances, Civic League luncheons, comedy shows and fund

raisers have kept her running.

At the Center you may find her upstairs, downstairs, in a meeting, or just sharing

a bag of popcorn with you. She is a person who has such a cute smile and way

about her, that it is hard to say “no”. Her compassion to serve was contagious. One member

joined by simply being asking if she would make some ice cream sodas and hot fudge sundae

props for a pie social. The Comedy Fashion Show was a huge production at the College Ave. lo-

cation and she enlisted the help of Nancy Peterson, Kathy Sheldon, Marilyn Gebhart and Sue Ar-

noldussen to create the costumes. There was much laughter and fun putting it together. The

fashion show was again done at TCoL with the same success and enjoyment.

Marilyn’s favorite stage decoration was “a ski hill on the stage”, with two hills and a mannequin

on skis going down the hill. Another mannequin on a skating rink, and two more in the

“Thompson Lodge” on the other side of the stage, having hot chocolate warming

themselves by the fireplace. It was beautiful! With Marilyn’s inspiration, the creativity was never

ending.

Marilyn swooned over “Elvis”! Danced like a teenager in our Comedy Show and loved the Classy

Civic League Luncheons. She found great entertainment for TCoL, always looking to make sure

everyone had a good time. She has been a mentor, a teacher, our Civic League president and a

good friend to share a meal with and share lots of laughs.

She has a big heart and some pretty big shoes to fill. Shirley says “She took an old Civic League

and showed us a new way to get the job done, and it’s been fun all the way”! It’s been quite a

ride with you, Marilyn!! Thanks for all you have done!

We all love you!

The Thompson Center on Lourdes

Notice, Visitor Waiver, & Health Declaration

Notice & Waiver

Covid-19 is an infectious disease presently active in Outagamie County and surrounding communities. Some infectious carriers are asymptomatic and unaware of their condition. The Thompson Center on Lourdes (TCOL) is concerned about the transmission of COVID-19. Although TCOL has taken steps to increase sanitation and distance between visitors during this pandemic, there is still a risk of contracting this disease in any public set-ting. By visiting TCOL and participating in activities you are assuming that risk. By signing below, you state that you are aware of the risk posed to you and agree to hold TCOL harmless if you contract COVID-19. You also agree to increase personal sanitation, cover your mouth when sneezing or coughing, and maintain social dis-tancing when participating in programs on the premises.

Health Declaration

I hereby declare that I have not been sick, had a fever, been diagnosed with COVID-19 or been in contact with anyone who was sick, had a fever, or has been diagnosed with COVID-19 in the past two weeks. I agree not to participate in programs or visit the premises until I have been without symptoms for a minimum of two weeks if I become sick, have a fever, or come into contact with anyone who has been sick or had a fever. Furthermore, I agree to inform TCOL if I become sick, have a fever, or I test positive for COVID-19 and allow them to com-municate that fact to the TCOL community at large to reduce the risk of further transmission.
