Sacramental Formation @ Newman

Dear Friends, Please Join me in welcoming my dear friend, Fr. Daniel Syverstad, OP who is here this weekend to make an appeal on behalf of the Western Dominican Province. Some of you will remember Fr. Daniel from his visitations to our community during the 90s when he was Provincial. He is now Pastor of our parish in Seattle and serves the Province as Development Director. I am very grateful that he has taken time from his busy schedule to be here this weekend. Last weekend 48 Freshmen completed "The AmazinGrace - Freshman Retreat 2013." A lot of really hard work goes into that weekend and I am grateful to many who worked very hard to make it a successful retreat and we are blessed to welcome this year's Freshmen to our Center and its ministries. The retreat weekend officially brings this year's welcome activities to a close. We enter the busy-ness of the middle of the semester and all of our programming is in full swing. The many student leaders are very busy about our various ministries and I am always both inspired and amazed by their seemingly endless energy and goodness. I will restart my weekly Wednesday-morning scripture study this Wednesday. This semester we will begin looking at the longest of the Prophetic Books of the Old Testament: Isaiah. This week, I will give an overview of the concepts of Prophecy in Ancient Israel and a quick introduction to Isaiah the person(s). Next week we will look at the structure of the Book(s) of Isaiah and begin reading the text. In the subsequent weeks, this semester I will focus on the texts in Isaiah that we read during the Advent and Christmas seasons. After the Christmas break, we will continue in Isaiah but focus on the text we associate with Lent and the Paschal Cycle. Anyone is welcome at these studies and we will have the 50 minute discussion over coffee each Wednesday morning beginning at 8:00 AM. Peace,

LECTOR TRAINING All new Eucharistic Ministers are required to attend a training session before they can be scheduled to serve at Mass. The session will take place on Tuesday, October 1 at 7:00 PM.

THE NON-EXISTENCE OF GOD: Aquinas & Dawkins Presented by Fr. James Thompson, O.P.

Fr. James will be offering a three-part mini-series entitled "The Non-Existence of God" on the following two Thursdays, Sept. 26 and Oct. 3. Fr. James will address the question whether the concept of 'God' is intellectually sound, or whether it is an outmoded Medievalism that cannot stand up to the findings of the sciences. Sessions begin at 7:00 PM in the Chapel.

COFFEE & DONUTS VOLUNTEER NEEDED We are in need of a volunteer or volunteers to help setup for coffee and donuts which takes place on Sunday mornings. The volunteer makes and sets up for the coffee and donut reception before the 8:00 AM Mass. If you are interested, please contact Susan at [email protected].

READINGS IN ISAIAH Wednesday Morning Scripture Series

with Fr. Bart Hutcherson, OP WEDNESDAY MORNINGS at 8:00 AM

Beginning October 2 Fr. Bart will begin by examining the Prophetic Tradition of Ancient Israel. Who was (or were) the prophet(s) Isaiah? What are the major themes of Isaian Prophecy? Then we will examine texts from the Prophet Isaiah associated with the Advent and Christmas Cycle of Readings in the Church's Liturgy. A second Series in the Spring Semester will examine the Isaiah Readings of the Lenten and Paschal Seasons. Each session will last 1 hour and be held in the Newman Classroom.
