Types & Effects of Diffusion Topics 3.4 & 3.81. Explain which type of diffusion is most closely associated with

migration.2. Explain how space-time compression has affected cultural diffusion.3. Explain which of the photos best exemplifies acculturation, and which

exemplifies assimilation.4. Explain how the first photo is an example of hierarchical diffusion.5. Explain with which type of diffusion the second photo is associated.

CONTEMPORARY CAUSES OF DIFFUSION 3.A.41. Compare the number

of first language speakers with the percentage of websites using that language.

2. Explain why so many websites use English.

3. Explain how the graphs support the idea that English is the world’s lingua franca.

IDEAS FOR SLIDESSLIDE 1 (images from Wikimedia Commons):

1. relocation 2. space-time compression has increased the speed of diffusion in general (connect to globalization) and increased the

amount of diffusion that happens through contagious diffusion, especially with the rise of the internet3. the second photo is acculturation because Muslim girls have adopted elements of the dominant culture (soccer, wearing

jerseys) while retaining elements of their culture (hijabs, or head coverings); the first photo is assimilation of a Native American after being enrolled at an American boarding school

4. It’s hierarchical diffusion because the American government removed Native American children from their homes and placed them in boarding schools to make them similar to the culturally dominant group (Note: depending on the age of your students, they may lack the historical background to understand this process, so you may explain it beforehand; you also may want to review how hierarchical diffusion can also be associated with urban areas, typically spreading between urban areas before spreading to surrounding rural areas)

5. relocation and stimulus are both possible, depending on how a student explains it; contagious & hierarchical are less likely to be successfully explained, but if a student can demonstrate understanding of the process, I generally accept it

SLIDE 2: 1. While English is the third most popular language spoken by native speakers, over half of websites use English2. The internet was developed by English speakers 3. lingua franca--language used by two people who have different first languages; statistics from the chart should be used to

support answersSLIDE 3: You may want to give your students an example of the use of this strategy. For example, if given the list apple, banana, broccoli, celery, kiwi, and turnip, one group & label might be apple, banana, kiwi--fruit and another broccoli, celery, turnip--vegetable. If your students need scaffolding, you can give them the categories and/or tell them how many words should be in each one.suggested answers (accept reasonable ones students can explain): acculturation, assimilation, multiculturalism, syncretism--effects of cultural diffusion; contagious, hierarchical, relocation, stimulus--types/methods of cultural diffusion; ethnicity, gender, language, religion--cultural components
