Committed to the future

Dear customers, partners and employees,

“Worldly good is ebb and flood.” This quaintsaying expresses a basic principle of businessmanagement that is just as relevant in 2009 as itever was. After a series of good years, we havecome to an ebb tide, something any businessshould have theoretically known was bound tohappen. Admittedly, because of the problems inthe financial industry, this ebb tide is moreabrupt and stronger than in earlier cycles. Sud-den changes in circumstances require equallyprompt changes in behavior. As a family busi-ness, we are used to thinking long-term and, asa committed player in the marketplace, to mak-ing our contribution to the positive develop-ment of the industry, insofar as we are able.

Our commitment to racing and our support ofSébastien Buemi must be seen in this light.Buemi, who is the son of an auto mechanicfrom Vaud, is once again establishing a Swisspresence in Formula One after a void of manyyears. MOTOREX has been sponsoring himfor years since he switched from drivinggo-carts to race cars. This support has beenprovided for a long time without advertisingthe MOTOREX brand. MOTOREX wishesSébastien a long, successful, and accident-freecareer in racing’s elite class.

Despite the difficult conditions in 2009, I wisheveryone the best possible business success, and I am certain that we will be able to gainsomething positive from this challenge if wework together with the necessary commit-ment.

MOTOREX FOCUS CNG SAE 10W/40Compressed natural gas engines requirespecially formulated motor oils, and theyhave a greater tendency to build up depositson pistons and in combustion chambers. Inaddition, acidic combustion residues canimpair lubricant performance. MOTOREXhas developed its FOCUS CNG SAE10W/40 high-grade high-lubricity motoroil for mobile CNG engines in utility vehi-cles and buses. FOCUS CNG uses Low-SAPS (low sulfated ash, phosphorus andsulfur) and the latest additive technologies. This synthetic performance specialty oilprovides ideal lubrication and lasting pro-tection against wear and oxidation for allcomponents.

Leading the way:JASO MA-NormT903 :2006In 4-stroke engines, the motor oil lubricatesthe transmission and clutch as well as theengine. The Japanese Automotive StandardsAssociation (JASO) has therefore issued theJASO MA standard (MA = non-slipping oil)for non-slipping clutches for motor oils thatare used in motors with wet clutches. JASOMA standard T903:2006 sets an evenstricter quality standard to prevent clutch

slip in high performance or high-accelera-tion motorcycles. In addition it defines twonew coefficient-of-friction classificationsand lowers phosphorus limits.

This latter step permits even better catalyticconverter compatibility. The JASO-com-pliant 4-stroke motor oils in the currentMOTO LINE already systematically meetthese new advanced specifications.

Label design aids identificationFor more than eight years MOTOREX’srevolutionary 1-liter bottle, with its built-infiller has been getting kudos from dealersand users alike.

An increase in the number of languagesfrom 14 to 25 on the labels of 1-liter and4-liter packages means that all of Europe isnow covered. The new languages includemany from the eastern part of Europe. When the consumer can find the informa-tion he’s looking for in his native languageon the label, it makes it much easier for himto make his choice at the point of sale.

The launch of the new label design nowmakes it possible to communicate with evengreater clarity, speed and emotional impact. The entire 4-stroke motor oil line is opti-mally divided into segments with the aid offour color codes. In addition, the newdynamic symbols used on the containersenhance MOTOREX’s image as an inno-vative lubricant manufacturer.

MOTOREX has enhanced its new genera-tion of MOTO LINE 4-stroke motor oilswith many innovations. This will ensurethat the bestsellers from Langenthal con-tinue to hold a strong position in the inter-national markets.

Motor oi l

By the time a new motorcycle generationappears on the market, MOTOREX alreadyhas the right motor oil in its product range. To accomplish this, MOTOREX needs tobe innovating constantly and have a solidunderstanding of the motorcycle market.More than ever, motorcycle engines havevery different motor oil specifications com-pared with passenger car engines. That’swhy the new generation of 4-stroke motoroils has been revised in many areas.

Advances in the scienceof lubricationThe engineering requirements of motor-cycles and scooters were analyzed in closecooperation with their manufacturers. Inthis way, the trends that the motorcycleindustry will be pursuing were identified. The formulations were then modifiedaccordingly. The result is a completely re-vised, state-of-the-art line of 4-stroke motoroils. Here is a summary of the most impor-tant innovations:

• new or optimized formulations

• use of the very latest additives

• improved performance in all products

• compliance with the latest standards(JASO MA T903: 2006, API SM, depend-ing on the product)

• reduction in emissions (Euro 3)

State-of-the-art additivestechnologyAchieving a properly balanced package ofadditives in every lubricant demands in-depth chemical knowhow and decades ofexperience. Clearly, this is an area whereMOTOREX shines. Even though additivesare standardized, they do change and theirproducers further develop and modify cer-tain properties. That’s why MOTOREXchemists and engineers keep close tabs onthese new developments. One of the keyconcerns is being able to reliably predicthow various additives will perform, for ex-ample under extreme conditions. Additivepackages are systematically put together toensure maximum performance and versatil-ity. Then the new formulations are subject-ed to a comprehensive test program thatincludes evaluation in racing.

MOTOREX continues its successful

series of MOTO LINE 4-strokemotor

oils. The threemost important inno-

vations are the advanced formula-

tions, the use ofmodern additives

and the attractive label designwith

its optimized information structure.

Sébastien Buemi: a picture book careerOn the road to the top echelons of automobile racing. Sébastien Buemi has accomplishedwhat hundreds of talented

racecar drivers can only dream of: a seat in a Formula One cockpit.

In August 2006MOTOREXmagazine featured Sébastien Buemi in an article entitled “I am ready!” A few days ago

Sébastien lined up for his first-ever Formula One Grand Prix in Australia. Sébastien is just over 20 years old,

and his sophisticated driving style is typical of the young generation in Formula One. The top people in F1 racing think

he has a promising future ahead. For the first time in a long time, a Swiss driver will be driving a Formula One car.

This makes Sébastien Buemi the 24th Swiss driver in history to enter racing history in a Formula One cockpit.

MOTOREX has been following and supporting the friendly young driver ever since he started his car-racing career

in 2004. Sébastien has impressively demonstrated his talents and ability again and again in various arenas: the BMW

new-talent formula, Formula 3 Euro series and the GP2 series.

Energy density of differentenergy sources

Repor t

“Gyrobus” at a charging station in Yverdon

in the early 1950s. Its 5 kWh battery was

sufficient for a distance of 3 to 4 km.

Less petroleum spirit,more creative spirit

As far back as 1953 Switzerlandwas

a leader in alternative transport with

the “gyrobus”. Today these efforts

are reaching their peak in the form

of high-potential technical solutions

such as Rinspeed’s “iChange”.

AccordinglyMOTOREX is researching

and developing pioneering lubri-

cants for sustainablemobility.

• A 230 V domestic outlet with a 10 A fusedelivers a maximum of 2.3 kW

• To achieve 445 kWh, the gas tank wouldhave to be “plugged in” for 194 hours or8 days until it was full

• The fully charged lithium ion battery, which weighs about 50 kg, contains7.5 kWh (approx. 1.7% of the gas tank)

Fossil fuels have an extremely high energydensity, and lithium ion batteries can onlykeep up with them in the short term:

All aboard our imaginary “gyromobile”!Suspended between the front and rear axlesis a one-meter-diameter flywheel weighing500 kg and rotating at 10,000 rpm. At fullpower 9.51 kWh of kinetic energy are avail-able. However, this huge gyroscope wouldnever pass a moose test and would be diffi-cult to steer. Its larger brother, the 20-seater”gyrobus”, was actually built in Switzerlandin 1953. Braking energy was not dissipatedas heat, but stored in the vehicle’s 1500 kgflywheel. An electrical supply at every stopprovided extra propulsive power.

Today hybrid driveToday a racy hybrid-drive car manages justover 47 miles per gallon of gasoline in stop-and-go urban traffic; what’s more, driverscan choose their power source to suit thesetting. Power comes from a 50-liter gastank (445 kWh) and a 32 Ah lithium ionbattery (0.384 kWh).

Comparing gasoline with a domestic 230 Voutlet and a lithium ion battery producessome impressive figures:

• Gasoline has an energy density of12.0 kWh/kg – i.e. 8.9 kWh/l

• The full gas tank contains 445 kWhof energy

Even greater economy in futureOnce our petroleum reserves have all beenused up, will our children charge up electriccars at domestic outlets? There are nearlyfour million cars in Switzerland. They aver-age 15,000 km a year. Assuming a consump-tion of 10 liters per 100 km, this equates to6,000 million liters or 4,800 million metrictons of fuel. Given a fuel energy density of11.9 kWh/kg, that makes 57.1 giga kWh.A medium-sized nuclear power plant canproduce 5 giga kWh annually at full load –just 10% of the total requirement. So a pureplug-in hybrid is not the answer!

Vehicles need to become even more eco-nomical. Keeping mobility at its currentlevels will require huge quantities of effec-tive alternative energies.

Environment-friendly transport will requireless petroleum spirit and more creativespirit, and we at MOTOREX intend to doour part.

3-ton battery in the trunkA full 50-liter gas tank with 445 kWh ofenergy is the equivalent of a fully chargedlithium ion battery weighing over 3 metrictons. Factoring in the different efficienciesof gas engines (approx. 30%) and electricmotors (approx. 90%), the vehicle wouldhave to carry a one-ton battery aroundwith it.

Consequently lithium ion batteries cannotyet replace gas tanks. However, the batterycan store the kinetic energy released duringbraking (at traffic lights or when the drivertakes his foot of the gas, for example) anduse it to power the electric motor. Whenpulling away there’s no four-cylinderengine; a small electric motor is perfectlyadequate. Hybrid drive does not make sensefor long highway journeys, but is ideal forshort journeys. The battery is a source ofpower rather than just extra weight. Usinggas and electricity in tandem to acceleratesaves additional energy.

Energy-saving lubricantsHybrid vehicles need motor oil too – in thesame quantities and at the same changeintervals as conventional cars. The majordifference is that they have to have energy-conserving oils, i.e. light SAE 10W/30,5W/30, 5W/20 or 0W/20 grades.

MOTOREX has taken up the challengeposed by hybrid drive systems and em-barked on the same course with high-techproducts:

• Fully synthetic low-friction motor oils

• Sheer-stable, low-viscosity high-perform-ance transmission oils for low-loss manualand automatic transmissions

• High-performance formulations basedon fully synthetic base fluids for extendedoil change intervals

• Extra additives that neutralize thedangerous residues left by biofuels fromdiffering sources

The “iChange” has adaptive bodywork. The

body lowers to suit the number of passengers

(1 to 3) and is aerodynamically optimized.

MOTOREX has been investing in developing

energy-saving lubricants for many years.

The applications are becoming ever wider.

Wherever impact drills are used,

extreme demands are placed onman

andmachine.MOTOREX’s ROTAC

impact drill oils are a response to

the new generation of even higher-

performancemachines.

Lubricating impact drills the right waythat extend to the tip of the drill has to per-form various tasks: It has to lubricate andcool all the bearing points in the movingparts. In addition, it must bind up, intermixwith and remove water condensate. Thepressure flushes the material that abradesfrom the rods and the rock out of the systemand prevents impurities entering the impactdrill from the outside. In high-performancemining machinery, the impact hammer oil iscirculated using a forced lubrication system. In a large drilling rig, for example, about250 g of lubricant is used every hour. Theprecise feed and regular blending injectionof the oil is monitored electronically.

MOTOREX ROTAC and ROTAC SYNTMOTOREX’s two high-quality impact drilloils, ROTAC and ROTAC SYNT, meet allthe requirements of today’s mining systems. These oils offer highly reliable lubrication, protect against wear and freezing, and coolworking components. They also offer anextremely linear viscosity/temperature be-havior, which permits very precise feed.ROTAC SYNT, which is fully synthetic, also biodegrades quickly.

Stefan Zürcher, industrymanager in the TEC de-partment of Avesco AG, isfully conversant with thewide range of demandsthat are placed on impact

drill oils. Avesco rents out a number ofdrilling rigs for underground and surface ap-plications. With his specialized knowledge,Stefan distinguishes between purely pneu-matic and pneumatic/hydraulic systems. As arule, hand-held drilling systems are purelypneumatic. The impact and rotation aregenerated in the drill by compressed airfrom a compressor at a pressure of 5 – 6 bar.In the more complex hammering anddrilling systems on the other hand, impactand rotation are accomplished hydraulically.

Extreme demands on impact drill oilsIn all large-scale mining machines, the im-pact system is driven hydraulically. Theforces that are transferred to the insertionends of the drilling linkage and the entirerotational drive are extreme. Up to 16 of these electrohydraulic machin-

ing stations are used in K.R. Pfiffner AG’s

rotary indexing machines.

The best of two worlds: ORTHOHYDROHLP

The hydraulic pump/tank unit is the heart

of the hydraulic system. 120 to 400 liters of

hydraulic fluid are used.

The name Hydromat® already suggests thegreat importance of hydraulics in K.R.Pfiffner AG’s machine tools. Large volumesof complex workpieces can be produced inshort cycle times with extreme precision. Ina Hydromat® it is the tool that rotates andnot, as in conventional lathes, the work-piece. Thus, Pfiffner’s rotary indexingmachines have up to 16 horizontal and8 vertical machining stations. They turn, mill, drill, grind, hone, cut, etc. workpiecessimultaneously in a single rotation! Threefluids are used: a hydraulic fluid, a cuttingoil and a lubricant for the central lubricationsystem.

Hydraulics: the heart of the systemThe countless functions are actuated hy-draulically by a high-performance hydraulicsystem. This system is available with a com-pressor pump, tank, valves, and, dependingon the location where it will be used, possi-bly even with heating or cooling systems.About 80 liters of hydraulic fluid circulatesthrough the machine every minute at about65 bar pressure in more than 100 meters ofhydraulic lines, cylinders, pistons and valves. The hydraulic fluid has to be both ruggedand responsive. This multitalented fluidtransfers immense forces and controls valvesin just fractions of a second. It also lubri-

A result of a synergy project

In a synergy project with hydraulic special-ists and users, MOTOREX found that inreal-life use MOTOREX hydraulic fluidsexceeded the high demands of users withregard to both quality and performance.Until now, however, no fluid manufacturerhas been able to supply a hydraulic fluidthat also offered optimal compatibility witha cutting oil. Which is why the assignmentwent to MOTOREX’s development team.

developed a new multifunctional hydraulicfluid: MOTOREX ORTHO HYDROHLP. This fluid is multifunctional becauseit combines the same advantageous proper-ties as ORTHO cutting oils with approvalunder DIN 51524/Part 2. Through cleverformulation work the desired properties forboth applications were combined and put towork to the benefit of the user.

If a machine tool operator uses an ORTHONF-X cutting oil (such as ISO 22) in combi-nation with the new ORTHO HYDRO(such as ISO 32) in the hydraulic system, the only possible effect of a potential inter-mixing of the two fluids will be that the vis-cosity of the cutting fluid might change. Butif the cutting oil is replenished with a some-what lower-viscosity ORTHO cutting oilgrade (such as ISO 15), equilibrium can berestored without great effort or expense.

The hydraulic fluid content in the cuttingoil will then no longer affect the perform-ance of the machining fluid. This is an im-portant argument in the case of unmannedshifts and optimized cycle frequencies. However the machine must be filled withthe two compatible ORTHO products.

Consistently high quality demandedNo matter what the machine tool is, its per-formance is always based on exact parame-

ters. It is therefore extremely important thatthe quality of any fluid that is used in themachine remains identical and that it com-plies with the machine manufacturer’s speci-fications. Unfortunately, this is not alwaysthe case in real life, and frequently not thecase in faraway regions such as the Far Eastand Asia. Therefore unnecessary damageoccurs again and again abroad due toimpurities such as those that might bepresent in new hydraulic fluid or due toinappropriate contents (sulfur, heavy metals,etc.).

Recommended by K.R. Pfiffner AGThe experts at K.R. Pfiffner AG thereforerecommend that, whenever possible, theirinternational customers use the same prod-ucts that were used in the machine when itwas put into service. Upon request, theseproducts can also be supplied in ultrafilteredHyperclean grades. By quickly respondingto special needs arising in the customer’smultifaceted line of machine tool products,MOTOREX once again demonstrated itsproblem-solving ability and agility.

We would be delighted to provide moreinformation on how the new generation ofORTHO HYDRO hydraulic fluids can goto work in your application.

Responding tocustomer needs“As from a particular con-centration, any hydraulicfluid that intermixes withthe cutting oil is clearlydetrimental to performance

and quality. MOTOREX has responded to thisproblem and has achieved a major technolo-gical advance in the industry with thedevelopment of its ORTHO HYDRO HLP. Werecommend that our partners use this novelhydraulic fluid.”

Custom bikes for fit riders

When he couldn’t find the right bicycle forhim, 26-year-old Thomas Kober decided tobuild his own. The result reveals Kober’s fas-

The novel MOTOREX ORTHO high-performance machining fluid isfurther proof that the Swiss lubrication technology company is a stepahead when it comes to technology: Recently the 50,000th newly designedmodel of orthopedic implant was made using MOTOREX ORTHOcutting oil, a product that is suitable for use with all materials and machin-ing types. Leading manufacturers of sophisticated implants work withMOTOREX ORTHO and, by using the integrated Vmax technology, manufacture products faster, more accurately and at a lower cost.

used his own muscles as the engine. Thebicycles that Kober builds attract just asmuch attention as real hogs – so much sothat pedestrians are often left standing agogas Kober cruises by.

“Each Cruiser is a unique creation,” explainsthe self-taught bike builder. Needless to say, special chrome parts, forks, and saddles areneeded, as are such unusual accessories as aloud foghorn. Thomas runs his own Internetshop at “abteilung-cruiser.ch.” Here bicycleenthusiasts who have caught the cruiser bugcan find everything they need from cruiserT-shirts to ready-to-ride bikes. And if one ofthese laid-back bikes needs to go uphill,Kober provides special electric helpers in theform of hub motors and hidden batteries.

This one-man enterprise certainly has no lackof good ideas.
