Centered in Christ, we are Called, Gathered, Transformed, and Sent!
Three-Service SundayFall Worship Schedule: Returning to 8, 9 and 11:15 a.m.
The Fall Worship Schedule will be expanded to include an early-bird worship time of 8 a.m. worship. The 8 a.m. worship will be a traditional service with the organ and communion. The length of the service will be 40 minutes, which means the service will be have an opening and closing hymn, scripture and sermon, prayer and communion. The 9 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. worship services will be the same as before.
We are adding a third service in the morning, because the 9 o’clock worship service was becoming too full in the fall. This will be an experiment that will begin Rally Day, September 11 and last through Advent in December. The staff and council will evaluate how the service was received and the effect on the Sunday morning flow.
Pastor Steve said, “The staff and council affirmed the importance of maintaining the education hour and the value of the existing services at 9 and 11:15. We also felt that a number of people prefer an earlier time and that this would also create seating for guests and visitors at the 9 o’clock service. Last fall, there were people coming to worship and leaving, because there was no room.”
Pastor Steve’s Video Devotionnow on Facebook.com/firstlutherancr
A brief, 60-second video devotion will be posted on Wednesdays that introduces the theme for the following Sunday’s sermon and worship. On Tuesday, prior to the video post, a question will be posted that invites response, and then on Friday, a key verse and brief idea will also be posted. (Turn to page 2 for a synopsis of our summer theme.)
Pastor Steve said, “I wanted to mix it up a bit and help people think about God’s work in our lives during the week. I hope these brief postings will help people get in touch with their faith and God’s word as something relevant to every day.”
Pastor Steve also said, “I decided to join Facebook. As a matter of practice, I will accept friend requests from congregation members who are 18 and older, though I will not send friend requests to members. I don’t know if I will ever post like Pastor Craig, though I do look forward to keeping in touch with people in a new way!”

Welcome our new Ministry Engagement CoordinatorHello! My name is Allisyn Callanan, and I am the new Ministry Engagement Coordinator here at First Lutheran.
My parents, sisters and I moved to Cedar Rapids in 1996, and have built a life here ever since. I graduated from Xavier in 2008 and from there went to The University of Northern Iowa. At UNI I received my degree in Elementary Education, with a minor in Special Education. I graduated from UNI in 2012, and began my teaching career!
I started out teaching pre-school at Hiawatha Day School, and then moved on to Regis Middle School as the 6th-8th grade Resource Teacher for two years. My husband, Kevin and I, have been married for two years in May. We have a sweet, crazy and super funny little boy named Kirby, who will be one on August 4.
Kirby is my maiden-name, and with four girls in my family, this was our way of keeping the Kirby name alive! I stayed home with him for the first 11 months, but began missing work and being around people. I feel so lucky to have found this job at First Lutheran! I look forward to learning all about the community that First Lutheran Church has, and getting to know you all! Please feel free to e-mail, call, or reach out in anyway at any time! I can be reached at [email protected] or by calling 365-1494 x.104.

Summer Worship:
In the sermon series on Galatians, we heard Paul say: Christ has set you free. Christian freedom means our conscience has been set free in the forgiveness of Christ. God does not need our good works. How then shall we live the freedom we have in Christ? During the weeks of July and August, we follow Jesus and his teachings about what it means to live God’s way of Christian freedom. We are freed to serve the neighbor. Our love is formed by faith in God’s grace.

Healing Prayer Service This Weekend
Please join us this coming Saturday and Sunday for our special Healing Services at all worship times.
None of us is exempt from needing God’s healing presence in our lives…or knowing someone who does. Please consider bringing someone with you who is in need of healing; a neighbor, co-worker, friend, or family member. These services are for healing of every kind, whether physical, spiritual, or emotional.
During these services we frame our time of Holy Communion by anointing with oil and offering special stations for individual prayer.

2nd Annual Stock Supperfor supporters of the First Lutheran Youth
A quick reminder for those who supported our 2nd Annual Stock Sale this past May – we’ll be holding our Stock Supper on Monday, August 15 at 6 p.m. in the Luther Fellowship Center!
If you don’t remember if you RSVP’d or invested, we’ll be sending you a postcard to help you RSVP! The menu for the evening is yet to be determined. The theme of the night will be “First Love” which was our missions theme. We will highlight the daily readings and activities in which our Middle School Youth participated while serving in Duluth, MN.
You’ll hear stories from our youth, see pictures of the week and experience how God has changed lives with God’s love!
Ladies’ Night OutOn Monday, July 25
at 6 p.m. we will gather at Napoli’s, 500 Marion Blvd, in Marion to enjoy each others’ company and the fresh evening air on
their patio.
We are open to all women who are members or
friends of the congregation.
If you want to join us, RSVP to Lori Nietert
at 350-7486.
Keenagers Luncheon! Our Senior Adult Ministry Team invites members and friends age 60 and older to join them for the next Keenager’s Luncheon on Thursday, August 11, at 12 Noon. Our Menu will be Beef stew with biscuits, tossed salad and Vicki’s double delicious pineapple-upside-down cake!
For our presentation we will hear from Andi Lewis about the Prairiewoods Franciscan Spirituality Center in Hiawatha. Prairiewoods was created in 1996 by a group of Franciscan nuns who hoped to provide an ecologically-friendly place for gatherings and connecting within the faith community where dialogue around issues of faith and the environment can be held. Come hear about the wonderful resources this 90-acre facility has to offer (it is a favorite place for our staff and council vision and long-term planning retreats.)
Make your reservation by calling the church office at 265-1494 or adding your name to the list at the welcome desk on Sundays. The cost is $5 payable at the door.
Gods Work. Our Hands.Service Sunday
Rally Day, September 11, will be a day of service for First Lutheran and hundreds of other ELCA congregations across the country. Our Hunger, Housing and Hope teams have arranged a variety of serving opportunities including special opportunities for families with children. Following worship that day lunch will be served and teams will be sent out.
Beginning August 14, check the bulletin board in the welcome area for sign-ups to participate in the various service projects. You will also have the option of getting a “God’s Work; Our Hands” t-shirt to get into the Spirit of the day; watch for those details coming soon.

The counselors have all left, the Hollywood decorations have been put away, but the kids are probably still singing the songs and talking about the things they learned at VBS Day Camp last month! We had SUCH a great time learning how we have been Released. With Luke 4:18-19 as our overall theme, the counselors led the children in songs, skits, bible study, games, science experiments, drama activities, and so much more! Here’s what we learned…
Monday: Life Released, Ephesians 2:10All life comes from God and is important to God. God released life into the world at creation, and God created us for the purpose of being in relationship with God.
Tuesday: Good News for the Poor, Luke 6:20Jesus Christ is the ultimate Good News for the poor. Jesus invites all to know him and he wants us to share the Good News of God’s love.
Wednesday: Freedom for the Captives, John 8:31-32It is part of our broken world that people are captive. All captivity is a symptom of sin – being apart from God’s purposes. Jesus brings freedom to all who are captive, and we are called to bring this freedom to others.
Thursday: Sight for the Blind, Psalm 146:8Blindness is both a physical and a spiritual thing. Jesus came to open eyes to see the world, to see God, and to see others (as well as ourselves) rightly – as people made in God’s image.
We could not have had such an amazing week without the hands of so many who made it possible. We are beyond grateful for their presence among us, and the support they provided to everyone. When you see these people, please give them a pat on the back and say, “Well done!”

Getting great volunteers on board early is a HUGE part of our preparations for the start of the new program year. We hope that you, yes you, will consider volunteering in Children and Family Ministries this year! We have a place everyone, and roles that fit pretty much
any time commitment or schedule. Additionally, you need to know that no one volunteers alone! Our volunteers serve in teams of 3-4, so that there are built-in partners for you. If you’d like to know more about volunteering, or are ready to sign up, please contact Marissa ([email protected]) or Lindsey ([email protected]), or give us a call: 319-365-1494. Confirmation UpdateConfirmation seems to be one of those ministries which churches are wondering more about and how we relate this important time in our youth’s lives to God and their faith.
Over the past few years the Confirmation Team has looked at different approaches and ways to help youth connect with their faith formation, as well as how to best connect our families as well. Through curriculum, guest speakers and changing some of the language involved with the ministry, we have made some changes and we are excited about where the ministry is going!
This fall we will try another approach with a couple of different goals in mind! First, we are looking to give youth another worship experience on Wednesday nights, in which they are an integral part of the leadership. Second, we are looking at topics in the midst of the teenagers lives and applying the Small Catechism to those topics. Lastly, we are looking at better equipping our families and small group leaders in leading these faith conversations in everyday life!
Stay tuned for the upcoming topics coming to the newsletter and for more information on the updated Family Blog for the fall! We think these changes are great opportunities for the youth of our congregation to be built up into the leadership of our ministry!

HSM Youth Leadership 2016-17“Youth are leading or they’re leaving.”
— Peer Ministry Leadership
The quote above has been something I’ve been wrestling with in my years of ministry. How do we engage youth, both middle school and high school, in a way that gives them intentional leadership for the ministry? I think some of the changes in the Confirmation Ministry, as listed above, is one way to engage with this statement. Another is to offer some specific training in leadership for our youth.
This fall, we are kicking off a new Youth Leadership opportunity for high school youth (Grades 9-12). The idea behind doing a Youth Leadership curriculum is to help youth engage in ways they may serve in ministry, not just in the church, but also in their schools and the community.
Currently the plan is to meet once a month and work our way through the Peer Ministry Leadership training. The specific meeting times and dates will be determined by the participants as we receive registrations.

6 The Light of First Lutheran
Prayer is a vital part of the life of First Lutheran Church. There are many ways to live out your commitment to prayer.
Which one speaks to you?
Want to be a part of the Prayer Ministry?
Please call Marcie Watson, Director of Spiritual Transformation,at 365-1494 x.280 or email [email protected].
Healing Prayer Worship
Are any among you suffering? They should pray. Are any cheerful? They should
sing songs of praise. Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church
and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins
will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that
you may be healed. The prayer of the righteous is powerful
and effective. — James 5:13-16
The Healing Prayer Ministry Team provides a place to live out James’ call to pray in and for our faith community.
Four times a year, prayers for healing are offered during weekend worship services. As worshippers come forward for communion, they have an opportunity to be anointed with oil and to have someone pray with them. Whatever the prayer—for relief from suffering, thanksgiving and praise, healing, or forgiveness—the team delights in praying these prayers.
If you are blessed by praying with others and want to be part of the Healing Prayer Team, please contact Marcie Watson, Director of Spiritual Transformation at [email protected] or call her at 365-1494, x.280. Ask for the date of the next healing prayer training session.
After-Worship Prayer Team
Every Sunday, a prayer team is available to pray with you about your concerns. Members of the After-Worship Prayer Team meet in the front of the Nave following the 11:15 a.m. worship service and will pray with you there or in a private setting about confidential concerns or joys in your life. This can be especially helpful in those situations where words may be hard for you to find.
If you have the gift of intercession and would like to join the Prayer Team to pray for others, please contact Sue Fletcher at [email protected] or (319) 365-9844 or call Marcie Watson (see contact information in side box).
Email Prayer Chain
We are a people of prayer. The Email Prayer Chain is a vital part of First Lutheran’s prayer ministry. This network of people is committed to prayer on behalf of the congregation and the community based on Jesus’ words to “ask and you will receive, seek and you will find, knock and the door will be opened” (Matthew 7:7). The importance of the prayer chain is that it faithfully intercedes on behalf of those in need by lifting up specific requests, concerns, and emergency situations. All prayer requests submitted to the prayer chain are held in strictest confidence.
If you have the gift of intercession and are interested in being part of our Email Prayer Chain team, please send your email address to Tammy Horak at [email protected] or Rose Gordon at [email protected] or call them at (319) 365-1494.

Our Progress in Planning for Building and MissionThe presentation by LOCUS on the building has been rescheduled to August 28. The building committee wants to provide the best presentation. They felt an August date would be a better time for strong congregation participation after many have completed their summer vacations, and would allow time for LOCUS and the committee to work through some remaining issues of design.
Even as we look forward to this presentation, I thought it important to recall all that we have learned and accomplished over the last year. We have done everything we said we would do in this planning phase:
• The congregation formed a building committee to prepare a plan.
• Knapp Warden conducted a thorough evaluation of the building and identified prioritized maintenance needs.
• The council formed a vision team to develop a comprehensive ministry plan.
• The vision team conducted 30 focus groups with 300 participants and also surveyed 270 members.
• The vision team identified seven key ministry areas for development:
1. Centrality of Worship2. Strengthening Welcome3. Importance of Relationships 4. Deepen Leadership Practices5. Spiritually Engage those outside the church.6. Develop new Avenues of Outreach7. Develop a Ministry of Healing in the Medical District.
• The organ committee has conducted a thorough study of the organ and its physical state and capacity for leading worship.
• Presentations were made in winter and in June. • The building committee and LOCUS are developing
proposals for the building that incorporate necessary deferred maintenance with ministry goals for welcome and worship.
We anticipate the final report from LOCUS and the building committee in August and then provide a time for comment and review.
Continued on Page 8 →
1) The Committee has reviewed round three of the preliminary floor plans we received from Locus Architects during the past month. The building committee is now working with LOCUS on the look of the sanctuary and welcome areas. The building committee decided to reschedule the presentation of the building plans and drawings to August 28. There are a few issues to work through with the existing ceiling/roof structure in the sanctuary and any potential changes. We are moving forward.
2) On June 9, Pastor Steve, Tom Olmstead and I traveled to St Paul Lutheran church in Davenport. We looked specifically at the enhancements they made to their church including the welcoming and children’s ministry areas. St Paul’s is a beautiful church that serves a very large ELCA congregation. Their welcoming area, signage, floor layout and overall aesthetics are impeccable and they did an excellent job in their restoration. A lot of information and “visual value” was achieved by us traveling down to Davenport.
Other news and dates:3) Organ committee is meeting to select their proposed
Organ builder. A huge thank you to all who attended Scott Riedel’s organ presentation with Brett on June 12. It’s always helpful to hear from someone who lives and breathes organs daily for a living…along with being extremely good in front of congregations. Thank you!!
4) Feasibility Study RFP’s: the Fund Appeal Selection Committee has conducted their first go-around in assessing six proposals from companies who help churches with capital appeals. Additional meetings will occur to narrow the search to at least three companies which will be invited for on-site interviews. This is a vital step in that whoever gets selected will be a major focal point in properly conducting and evaluating our fund-raising potential and subsequent success to improve God’s House.
In Christ, Tom Schamberger

8 The Light of First Lutheran
Thank you. To all of you, First Lutheran Church, for welcoming me this year as your intern, thank you.
I go ahead to SO many new adventures, and I take with me everything I’ve learned from you. Though our time together was not LONG, it was filled with many good things and God has been graciously at work among us.
I bid you FAREWELL as my family and I continue on to more school. Your work as an internship site this year and the past two years has been important. You have made a difference in the whole church with your help to equip new pastors.
So, AUF WIEDERSEHEN. I hope to see many of you again visiting the Castle for some educational opportunities at the seminary, and I am excited to see what becomes of your building project I have had the privilege to see begin.
And at last, GOOD-BYE, God be with you.
God bless and keep you all - Intern Pastor Chris Sesvold
What happens next?
In the fall, with the help of a fund raising consultant, we will conduct a feasibility study with interviews and surveys to measure the response of the congregation to the plans. What is the interest? What is our fund raising capacity?
On the basis of this feasibility study, we will have a pretty good idea how many dollars we can expect to raise and what goals we can accomplish. The leadership will prepare a plan and then return to the congregation for a decision by vote to proceed with a capital campaign. You as members of the congregation will have the final say and carry the vision for how this Congregation will do God’s work in the heart of the city.
Each step along the way, we have taken the time to involve the congregation and to present well thought through plans. Thank you for your participation, and your hopeful patience through this discernment process!
Pastor Steve Knudson

School Supply DriveNow through the end of July, the HOPE Team is supporting the Families Helping Families in its collection of school supplies for its annual back to school rally. This effort allows children in foster care from the Cedar Rapids area to receive a back pack full of school supplies. A tub will be available by the information desk where church members may place donations. Monetary donations are also accepted and will be used to purchase school supplies. A list of suggested supplies is below. We are told the backpacks are especially in need for them to hold all the other supplies
