Rootham: Symphony No. 2 / Vernon HandleyIt has been said that Cyril Rootham (1875-1938) has done much for other contem-porary composers; unfortu-nately, he was deficient in peddling his own wares. This verdict may serve to explain the neglect Roothan’s music

suffered during his lifetime. It is to be hoped that this Lyrita release, which echoes the enterprise of the same label’s pioneering 1976 studio recording of the First Symphony, will reawaken interest in this key figure of early 20th century British music. New DVDs & Blu- raysDVD and Blu-ray Ballet & Dance Titles!

William Shakespeare“Love’s Labour’s Lost” / “Love’s Labour’s Won” (or “Much Ado About Nothing”) [Blu-ray or DVD]These productions were recorded live at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon, in March of 2015. To mark 100 years since the First World War, the Royal Shakespeare Company chose to set this uncommon but apt pairing in the era of the First World War. Although the jury is still out on whether the play more commonly known as ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ was alternatively titled ‘Love’s Labour’s Won’ in Shakespeare’s time, the coupling of plays is unquestionably fitting.

Love’s Labour’s LostSummer 1914. In order to dedicate themselves to a life of study, the King and his friends take an oath to avoid the company of women for three years. No sooner have they made their idealistic pledge than the Princess of France and her ladies-in-wait-ing arrive, presenting the men

with a severe test of their high-minded resolve.

Love’s Labour’s WonAutumn 1918. A group of sol-diers returns from the trench-es. The world-weary Benedick and his friend Claudio find themselves reacquainted with Beatrice and Hero. As memo-ries of conflict give way to a life of parties and masked balls, Claudio and Hero fall madly, deeply in love, while Benedick

and Beatrice reignite their own rather more combat-ive courtship. Shakespeare’s comic romance plays out amidst the brittle high spirits of a post-war house party, as youthful passions run riot.

“... blissfully entertaining and emotionally involving...’’ (The Daily Telegraph) “...poignant, impassioned ... Brilliantly comic... extraordinarily powerful’’ (The Times) “A marvel... immaculately coordinated.’’ (The Daily Mail) Both plays in a two disc set (2 Blu-ray Videos) 2 BOA 7183BD $58.49 (2 DVD Videos) 2 BOA 1193BD $53.99 Love’s Labour’s Lost only (1 Blu-ray Video) BOA 7177D $29.99 (1 DVD Video) BOA 1185D $24.99Love’s Labour’s Found only (1 Blu-ray Video) BOA 7178D $29.99 (1 DVD Video) BOA 1186D $24.99

the Royal Opera’s 2006-7 season, and viewing this well-produced video of the show it’s perfectly obvious why. Natalie Dessay’s skinny tomboy of a Marie combines a 110 per cent commitment to the physicality of her acting with a coloratura facility that is beyond criticism. (BBC Music Magazine)

Donizetti: L’Elisir d’amore / Vienna State Opera, Villazon, Netrebko [Blu-ray]Artists: Rolando Villazon, Anna Netrebko, Leo Nucci, Ildebrando D’Arcangelo. Alfred Eschwé/Vienna State Opera Orch. & Chorus (1 Blu-Ray Video) (Warner) (1 BR) WRNC 552752 $23.99 Previously released: (1 DVD) WRNC 633529 $25.98Theatrical magic between Rolando Villazón and Anna Netrebko in Donizetti’s delightful and ever-popular comedy ‘L’elisir d amore’. Rolando Villazón as Nemorino exhibits a real gift for comic acting, manipulating his rubber face into dozens of hilarious poses, and even juggling apples with the panache of a circus performer. More important, he uses his lyric tenor to sing the part with impressive subtlety. Netrebko’s Adina is every bit as good, with deft act-ing and a lovely lyric soprano voice that makes you understand why she’s the only girl for Nemorino.

The DVD bonus features include an interview with Joyce on her stage accident and subsequent wheelchair per-formances. Sung in Italian, with subtitles in English, French, German, Spanish and Italian.

Rossini: Le Comte Ory / Joyce DiDonato, Juan Diego Florez, MET [Blu-ray]

Celebrating ECM ArtistsJazz Recordings On Sale

Ethan Iverson/Mark Turner (Sax) / ‘All Our Reasons’The quartet heard here was formed in 2003, and is made up of Mark Turner, tenor saxophone, Ethan Iverson, piano, Ben Street, double-bass and Billy Hart, drums. In 2005 the group recorded

a well-received debut album for hard-bop label High Note. Since then, as Ethan Iverson notes, the music has become more free and spacious, qualities that fit well with ECM’s priorities. (1 CD) (ECM) 1 ECM B001657502 $16.98 On Sale

Craig Taborn Trio / ‘Chants’Taborn’s trio with Thomas Morgan (bass) and Gerald Cleaver (drums) has been a unit for eight years, and they’ve played together in other groups for even longer. ‘Chants’ feels like a continu-ation of ‘Avenging Angel’.

There are wide open spaces, like when Taborn lets chords ring out and Cleaver makes great state-ments with just the tip of the ride cymbal, much like Paul Motian.” -JazzTimes.com (1 CD) (ECM) 1 ECM B001826402 $16.98 On Sale

Mark Turner/Mark Turner Q / ‘Lathe of Heaven ‘Mark Turner renowned for his exploratory intellect and intimate expressivity on the full range of the tenor saxophone. For ‘Lathe of Heaven’, Turner leads a quartet of kindred spirits, often entwining long

serpentine lines with rising-star trumpeter Avishai Cohen as they play long, introspective lines of hypnotic grace; and with the lithe rhythm section of bassist Joe Martin and drummer Marcus Gilmore - there is subtle volatility in the air. (1 CD) (ECM) 1 ECM B002144902 $16.98 On Sale

Ralph Alessi with Moran, Gress & Waits / BaidaTrumpeter Ralph Alessi has convened a powerhouse New York band with pianist Jason Moran, bassist Drew Gress and drummer Nasheet Waits. As a vessel for the album’s seemingly bottom-

less lyricism, this quartet of virtuosos plays with extraordinary finesse; but there is also a tensile strength emanating from the performances. Then there is the silver of Alessis trumpet tone; as The New York Times has said, “it has a rounded lu-minescence, like the moon in full phase.” (1 CD) (ECM) 1 ECM B001873202 $16.98 On Sale

Lucian Ban / Mat Maneri: Transylvanian Concert “Transylvanian Concert” marks an ECM debut for Romanian pianist-composer Lucian Ban and a welcome return for US violist Mat Ma-neri, in his 9th appearance for the label. The album docu-

ments a spontaneously organized performance in Targu Mures, in the region where Lucian Ban grew up. A large, highly-attentive audience follows Ban and Maneri through a program of their self-penned ballads, blues, hymns and abstract improvisations. (1 CD) (ECM) 1 ECM B001843302 $16.98 On Sale

Chris Potter (Saxophone) / Imaginary Cities‘Imaginary Cities’ is the recording premiere of saxo-phonist Chris Potter’s new Underground Orchestra. At the core of this larger ensemble is the personnel of his long-established Underground quartet - with Adam Rogers, Craig Taborn and Nate Smith - now joined by two bassists, a string quartet, and Potter’s old comrade from Dave Holland Quintet days, vibes and marimba man Steve Nelson. Potter had Arabic and Indian string sections in mind, as well as con-temporary composition, when shaping this material. (1 CD) (ECM) 1 ECM B002244002 $16.98 On Sale

David Torn (guitar) / Only Sky David Torn - ever-intrepid guitarist, producer, impro-viser, film composer and soundscape artist - returns with ‘Only Sky’, an album that explores the far sonic edges of what one man and a guitar can create, a solo

recording of almost orchestral atmosphere. With hovering ambient shadows and vaulting flashes of light, its channeling of deep country/blues memo-ries and Burroughsian dreams of North Africa, this is an album to get lost in over and over again. 1 CD) (ECM) 1 ECM B002296602 $16.98 On Sale

Vijay Iyer Trio / Break StuffHere is the highly anticipated new release by this Grammy-nominated trio, made up of Vijay Iyer (piano), Stephan Crump (double bass) and Marcus Gilmore (drums). Iyer explains, ‘Break Stuff’ is what happens after formal

elements have been addressed. He calls the break a span of time in which to act, and can be the moment when everything comes to life. Fast mov-ing and quick-witted, the group has developed a strong musical identity of its own, with an empha-sis on what Iyer calls “co-constructing”, exploring all the dynamics of playing together. (1 CD) (ECM) 1 ECM B002256702 $16.98 On Sale

Andy Sheppard Quartet / Surrounded by SeaExtending the range of his widely-praised Trio Libero project with Michel Benita (double bass) and Seb Roch-ford (drums), Andy Sheppard adds Eivind Aarset (tenor saxophone) to the band. With Aarsets ambient drones and

electronic textures as a backdrop, Sheppard and Co. seem to have even more space to explore. The music embraced includes new compositions, open improvisations, an Elvis Costello tune, and the Gaelic traditional ballad Aoidh, Na Dean Cadal Idir which appears in three variations, a thematic thread through the album. (1 CD) (ECM) 1 ECM B002314102 $16.98 On Sale

Tim Berne’s Snakeoil / You’ve Been Watching MeTim Berne’s Snakeoil reaches a heightened state of collective interaction with guitar adding new textural allure. The band can still be bracingly kinetic, but there is more space in these compositions and more lyrical focus to the improvisations. Berne’s music has never been richer or more arresting. Julia Hülsmann Quartet with Theo BleckmannA Clear Midnight: Kurt Weill & America

Pianist Julia Hülsmann and singer Theo Bleckmann cel-ebrate lesser-known music by Kurt Weill, alongside the master’s best-loved songs including “Mack The Knife”, “Speak Low” and “Septem-ber Song”. It marks a musical

advance for the Hülsmann group at a number of levels, and these recastings of Weill open up new imaginative possibilities for the players. Hülsmann and Bleckmann are joined by Tom Arthurs (trum-pet, flugelhorn), Marc Muellbauer (double bass) and Heinrich Köbberling (drums). (1 CD) (ECM) 1 ECM B002277602 $16.98 On Sale

David Virelles ‘Mbókò’ with Román Díaz, Robert Hurst & Thomas Morgan

With Mbókò, Cuban pianist-composer David Virelles has taken the folkloric rhythms of Afro-Cuban religious ritual and transmuted them into a 21st-century music resonat-ing with mystery and mean-ing. Pianist Virelles, joined

by Román Díaz (vocals), Robert Hurst and Thom-as Morgan (double bass) and Marcus Gilmore (drums) have tapped into a musical impulse that is simultaneously ancient and modern, communal and personal, meditative and propulsive. Mbókò casts a spell. (1 CD) (ECM) 1 ECM B002171702 $16.98 On Sale

Ches Smith ‘The Bell’ / Craig Taborn Mat Maneri“The best thing I caught all week-end,” said critic Peter Margasak of the 2014 New York Winter Jazzfest, “was a superb trio led by drummer Ches Smith with pianist Craig Taborn and violist Mat

Maneri, which expertly infused seductively narcotic writ-ing with a mixture of brooding melody and rich texture.” (1 CD) (ECM) 1 ECM B002438802 $16.98 On Sale

An interview with Ches SmithDrummer, percussionist and vibraphone player, Ches Smith writes, per-forms and records music in a wide variety of styles, including solo percussion,

small and large jazz ensembles, and experimental rock and jazz. His latest album is ‘The Bell’. Recently, I got a chance to interview Ches about this new al-bum. Here’s that exchange, in part. - Paul Ballyk

P.B. - Congratulations on your latest recording for ECM, ‘The Bell’. Can you talk a little about the creative process behind the music, especially in terms of the balance between written and improvised material? C.S. - Thanks very much. The first thought I had for this group was that I wouldn’t provide written mate-rial at all—the improvising chemistry was strong, and I didn’t want bog us down with composition. Then, when the opportunity to make this record came up, I decided to try some very simple writing: compositions with two or three well-defined sections that are resil-ient enough to be approached in a number of ways...P.B. - Is it fair to say that these compositions have been ‘finished’ by the trio through repeated readings and performances?C.S. - Perhaps it would be more accurate to say that they are ‘finished’ afresh each time we play them: I am interested in wildly different iterations. There are, of course, the pieces which were more or less fin-ished before we played them (excepting the improv sections), such as I’ll See You on the Dark Side of the Earth, Isn’t it Over?, and Its Always Winter Some-where; those would probably take only minor adjust-ments to make work in any group. P.B. - I understand you are indifferent to genre when you write, but as an after-the-fact statement about what listeners can expect, which of your musical in-fluences do you think are most audible in ‘The Bell’?C.S. - I’d say Roscoe Mitchell, Paul Motian, Beethoven, Arnold Schoenberg, Sun Ra, William Winant, Mat Maneri, John Coltrane, Craig Taborn.P.B. - By the time you take these compositions to a stage, such as at the NYC Jazz Festival, is there much opportunity left for real improvisation?C.S. - There is definitely room for real improvisation any time we play these pieces. Improvisation is at the core of Craig and Mat’s musicianship, they are going to make stuff up no matter what—as they should... The audience will hear the themes, harmonies, etc, but recontextualized by whatever intent, attitude, and spirit takes hold of us that night. You can find the complete interview off the jazz homepage at hbdirect.com.
