Thru The Lens

Welcome!

Welcome to the July edition of Thru The Lens. A number of our

members have been able to get away during winter, so I look forward to

seeing some of their photos in the months to come!

Sarah Walker judged the recent ABANDONED BUILDINGS competition. It was great to see a large range of entries, since the topic was a little more challenging. Sarah also presented a mini-workshop on Lightroom and Photoshop skills.

Congratulations to the ABANDONED BUILDING winning images, they are displayed in this newsletter.

A reminder that print entries are to be delivered to Nerissa, while Gail and Phil are away. Keep an eye on the notifications you get in the newsletter, on email and Facebook regarding where to drop them off.

There are a few important dates also coming up in August, including submission dates for the Interclub competition with Preston.

Katrina shares some of her photos taken on her travels overseas. Also, congratulations to Clyde Scorgie on his recent achievement in the Capture Magazine Australasia’s Top Emerging Photographers competition.

You will also find ideas of events around town and surrounds.

Enjoy your month!

Welcome to the July Newsletter and as always, thanks to Gina for preparing it.

Can you believe it, another month and another competition in the rear view mirror. It seems that the “Abandoned buildings” theme was a bit of a challenge for some, congratulations to the winners and placegetters.

Things to look forward to in August are our next competition, “Open” on 13 August and the “Inspired by a painting” workshop presented by Emma Gillette on 21 August.

The workshop should prove to be very informative considering our last competition theme for the year is “Inspired by a painting”.

I would also like to also draw your attention to our upcoming annual Preston / Moreland interclub competition which will be hosted by Preston this year on 10 September. This will be the 1st one under our new club banner and I encourage everyone to put in your best images so we can endeavour to get the Moreland Camera Club name on the trophy. While this event is still a little way off, we need to compile our entries with enough time to get them to Preston and then onto the judge. As such, the closing date for submissions for the interclub is 13 August which coincides with the August Open competition.

As has previously been advised, while Gail is away Nerissa has offered to look after the Print Steward role, so print entries for regular competitions and for the Interclub should be delivered to her.

Another event I would like to give a mention to is our Melbourne Cup long weekend away which this year is to Geelong. Arrangements are well under way with accommodation booked and a deposit paid. There is still one more spot if you are interested.

Finally, I would like to remind everyone that we have two Facebook groups and a website which are available to all members to stay informed and showcase and share your photographs and ideas with your fellow members.

Stay motivated, stay creative and keep on snapping.

Places I’ve been….

by Katrina Gouramanis

When Gina asked me to send her some photos for the newsletter, I sifted through my collection and it dawned on me just how lucky I am to have been to the places I’ve been. I’ve travelled extensively through Europe, Eastern Africa, quite a few countries in Asia and most recently I’ve travelled to South America. Here’s a little snippet of the photos I’ve taken.

The first photo of the orange clouds is in Malawi, at the time, this was the seventh poorest country in the world, but rich in beauty, culture and character.

The photo of the lion cub, I believe was taken in Botswana, in a ‘lion park’, where they are trying to build up the population of lions. One of the best places to visit in Africa is the Okavango Delta, an inland delta full of wildlife.

The Annapurna mountain range in Nepal can be seen in the third photo. The Nepalese are really cheerful people, and the colourful flags you can see are just everywhere through the country.

The tree that is swallowing the ancient ruins is in Siem Reap, Cambodia. (I should have put this one in for the abandoned buildings comp!)

The next photo is of a proboscis monkey taken near Sandakan in Borneo, Malaysia. Apparently this is a really dangerous place to go (particularly when travelling solo). Lucky I didn’t know that at the time.

I’ve been to Vietnam twice and I have found that everyone seems happy for you to take photos of them. The elderly couple here were still working their farm just outside of the ancient city of Hoi An. The lady in traditional head gear was from Sapa, the northern, mountainous part of Vietnam that has been made into rice paddies.

The next two were taken on Isla de San Cristobal (my favourite of the Galapagos Islands), the first is of a baby frigate and the second is two blue footed boobies. This island had lots of wildlife and not so many people. Last photo is of the Andes mountains along the Inca trail on the way to Machu Picchu, the ruins of the Inca people. The fog made it seem so mysterious.
