The countrys economic situationhas indeed put a hurt on so many, affecting their businessesand their households. Our thoughts and prayers do go outto all of our friends who have experienced some of thesemisfortunes. Everyone is growing weary from hearing abouthow terrible things are and with the help of some positivethinking, hopefully 2009 will be the year of changeforthe better. I dont take any political sides at all but with theelection behind us now, this month well be inaugurating ournew president who says Yes We Can. Maybe we can alltake that phrase and implement it into our own lives andmake some really good things happen.

    TAMA

    Tidewater/Albemarle Motorcycle Association

In southeastern Virginia and northeastern NC there is an organization to help the motorcycling community keep track of althe rider events and assist in coordinating these activities, the Tidewater Albemarle Motorcycle Association (TAMA). While

the exact date that TAMA was established or who the original ofcers were is still a little unclear, it seems that collectivememory dates the association at over 15-20 years old. Today there is an average of about 17 clubs that participate in TAMA

There are two primary objectives of TAMA. First, TAMA is a scheduling coordinator for local motorcycle clubs and associations. Local clubs and associations attend TAMA meetings and work together to schedule events on a yearly basis. Secondis that TAMA provides for interaction between club members. We believe that it is this interaction that helps to break downcommunication barriers between clubs and reduces potential conict within the motorcycle community. When riders canidentify a name and face with another club, they are more willing to support riding events sponsored by other clubs.

TAMA meetings are held the third Thursday of each month (except in December) at the Golden Corral on the corner ofBattleeld Blvd and Volvo Parkway in Chesapeake, VA at 7:00 PM. The agenda of most TAMA meetings is to review andedit the yearly schedule. In regard to ride events, established dates from the previous year have a leg up on new events ornew dates for old events. It is the last two categories that require some negotiation between the attending clubs to ensurethat events are not conicting with one another.

TAMA meetings have other agenda items during the year. TAMA sponsors an annual Poker Run and Bike Show. Tradi-

tionally, the prots from this event are split equally between charities in Virginia and North Carolina. Participating clubs decidhow the funds will be distributed.TAMA provides an opportunity for the Biker community to work together and still promote their individual clubs and asso-

ciations. At a basic level, TAMA is a great example of Bikers helping Bikers. It only works if the Biker community wants it towork and if clubs work together to coordinate their events.

We invite all independent riders to attend our meetings and events as well as non TAMA clubs participation to help buildbridges between the area clubs and help build good will throughout the communities we live in.

TAMA encourages all clubs to attend the meetings and support each others events. This unity among Bikers is whatmakes our lifestyle one worth living!

Proud To Be An AmericanFreedom and Jeff

Freedom and I have beentogether 10 years this sum-mer. She came in as a babyin 1998 with two broken

wings. Her left wing doesntopen all the way even aftersurgery, it was broken in 4places . Shes my baby.

When Freedom came inshe could not stand andboth wings were broken. She was emaciated andcovered in lice. We madethe decision to give her achance at life, so I took her

to the vets ofce. From then on, I was always around her.We had her in a huge dog carrier with the top off, and it was

loaded up with shredded newspaper for her to lay in. I usedto sit and talk to her, urging her to live, to ght; and shewould lay there looking at me with those big brown eyes.We also had to tube feed her for weeks.

This went on for 4-6 weeks, and by then she still couldntstand. It got to the point where the decision was made toeuthanize her if she couldnt stand in a week. You knowyou dont want to cross that line between torture and rehab, and it looked like death was winning. She was going to beput down that Friday, and I was supposed to come in onthat Thursday afternoon. I didnt want to go to the centerthat Thursday, because I couldnt bear the thought of herbeing euthanized; but I went anyway, and when I walked ineveryone was grinning from ear to ear. I went immediatelyback to her cage; and there she was, standing on her own,a big beautiful eagle. She was ready to live. I was just aboutin tears by then. That was a very good day.

We knew she could never y, so the director asked me toglove train her. I got her used to the glove, and then to jess -es, and we started doing education programs for schoolsin western Washington . We wound up in the newspapers, radio (believe it or not) and some TV . Miracle Pets even dida show about us.

In the spring of 2000, I was diagnosed with non-hodgkins

lymphoma. I had stage3, which is not good (onemajor organ plus every-where), so I wound updoing 8 months of chemo.Lost the hair - the whole

bit. I missed a lot of work. When I felt good enough,I would go to Sarvey andtake Freedom out for walks.Freedom would also cometo me in my dreams andhelp me ght the cancer. This happened time andtime again.

Fast forward to Novem-ber 2000, the day after Thanksgiving, I went in for my lastcheckup. I was told that if the cancer was not all gone after8 rounds of chemo, then my last option was a stem cell

transplant. Anyway, they did the tests; and I had to comeback Monday for the results. I went in Monday, and I wastold that all the cancer was gone.

So the rst thing I did was get up to Sarvey and take thebig girl out for a walk. It was misty and cold. I went to heright and jessed her up, and we went out front to the topof the hill. I hadnt said a word to Freedom, but somehowshe knew. She looked at me and wrapped both her wingsaround me to where I could feel them pressing in on myback (I was engulfed in eagle wings), and she touched mynose with her beak and stared into my eyes, and we juststood there like that for I dont know how long. That was amagic moment. We have been soul mates ever since she

came in. This is a very special bird.On a side note: I have had people who were sick come

up to us when we are out, and Freedom has some kind ofhold on them. I once had a guy who was terminal come upto us and I let him hold her. His knees just about buckledand he swore he could feel her power course through hisbody. I have so many stories like that.

I never forget the honor I have of being so close to such magnicent spirit as Freedoms.

Proud To Be An AmericanWreaths Across AmericaBy Bo Albert

December 13, 2008, at 12 noon, 365 Veteran Cemeter-ies participated in memorial services by placing Christmaswreaths on the grave markers of our soldiers. Twenty two

of those Cemeteries were located in Virginia and eleven inMaryland.

Freedom is never more than one generation away fromextinction. We didnt pass it to our children in the blood-stream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on forthem to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunsetyears telling our children and our childrens children what itwas once like in the United States where men were free.~Ronald Reagan~

I attended the services at City Point Cemetery, HopewellVirginia and found myself profoundly moved by the servicewhich was a joint effort of the VFW 2239 - Colonial Heights,American Legion Posts 284 - Colonial Heights, Hopewellpost 146 and Petersburg Post 2. The Location Director wasJean Mull and Program Chairman, Irene Peters of the La-

dies Auxiliary VFW 2239, Colonial Heights, VA. Among themany individuals who participated, were several groups aswell, including Boy Scout Troop 166, Petersburg and FortLee 217 MP Detachment.

The truck full of wreaths was escorted by The LegionRiders MC, (Post 2, Petersburg, Two Rivers, Hopewell and

Southern Virginia 284) Lost Souls United MC from Ft. Lee,Purple Diamonds MC, Chestereld, Blu Thunder MC Cen-tral Virginia, and Outcast MC, Chestereld.

As representatives of each branch of the Military pre-sented wreaths, emotions were at their peak as tears wereshed as a reminder that we are at war and Christmas is avery difcult time for our military and their families.. We atThunder Roads would like to send our gratitude, love andthe knowledge that we will never forget your sacrice, pastor present. God Bless you all and thank you.

    by Maria Schoeberl, Archivist

When viewing early images of Harley-Davidson rid-ers, their clothing always stands out. Instead of the blackleather, jeans, bandanas and safety helmets of today,

riders in the rst decades of the 20th century wore verydifferent clothing: Three-piece suits, shirts with starchedcollars, owing scarves, long skirts and no helmets. Toour eyes, they look conventional and completely non-re-bellious.

This image seems to clash with the spirit of Harley-Davidson motorcycle riders, who pride themselves ontheir individuality and spirit of rebellion--something that isreected in their clothing. Why then, do early motorcycleriders seem to dress so conservatively and traditionally?

The reason has to do with the solid business senseof the early Harley-Davidson Motor Company. In any

business, for a company to succeed, it must consistentlyappeal to the broadest segment of the population thatit can. This is naturally even more important for a newand growing company, such as Harley-Davidson wasin the 1910s and1920s. And, becausethe early motorcyclecompanies were allmarketing a rela-

tively new and untriedproduct (one that wasnot yet identied withthe individualist, therebel and the adven-ture seeker) Harley-Davidson and othermotorcycle companiesappealed to the needsand conventions of themajority of Americans.

To do so, theyreached out to thebusiness owner whoneeded a way toserve customers more

quickly and efciently, the city dweller whoneeded a quick andeasy way to get awayfor the weekend, aswell as the averageworker who neededan affordable meansof transportation thatwas faster and offeredmore freedom thanthe streetcar or side-

walk. And appealing to the interests of the mainstreammeant presenting an image of the early rider that reect-ed the conventions of dress at the time. This meant the

suit of the businessman and ofce worker, the neat andpractical uniforms of the delivery workers, as well as theelegant, Sunday-best traveling outts worn by vacationers and day-trippers.

This was, after all, an era where the conservativeand impeccable was considered the only proper way topresent oneself to the public. Indeed, at the turn of thecentury it was considered indecent for a women not to bwearing stockings or showing bare arms in anything butformal evening wear. So riders in the 1910s, 1920s, andearly 1930s wore what was considered proper clothingSuits (for both women and men), shirts with high-but-

toned collars, neckties, fashionable hats and skirts forthe women who were all too often relegated to the side -car. But was the clothing really all that conventional?

    Why so formal? Part I

    Kevin G. Charleville

No matter what season you are riding in, eye protec-tion (EP) is a must. Most riders that I see on the road,

do wear eye protection in various forms, whether it be

a shield pulled down, goggles, sunglasses, or even

prescription glasses. However, I occasionally see rid-

ers not wearing EP, and/or using their windshields as

their protection, this is a recipe for disaster, because

the wind turbulence can blow objects around the

windshield. Not wearing EP leaves your eyes vulner-

able for many foreign objects such as, rocks, bugs,

dirt, sand, etc. Also, not wearing EP can cause youreyes to water, which in turn can cause blurred vision.

Also, wearing the proper lens color for the appropriate

time of day is critical as well. In other words, the wear-

ing of clear lenses at night is a very wise thing to do,

I carry multi-lens safety glasses kit for my rider, and

dark and clear goggles for myself. Safety lenses are

denitely better than regular lenses, shattered glass in

your eye(s) can cause extensive damage. You can nd

stylish safety glasses searching the web, or there is

always a vendor(s) at rallies and shows that sell them.

I have never paid over 10 bucks for a pair of gogglesor glasses.

So, what do we do if someone suffers an eye injury

out on the road, or anywhere as far as that goes?

Well, rst, we call for help, if the injury is severe

enough call 911, then we get a good look at the injury

to check the extent of damage. This could be some-

thing as simple as a particle of sand or dirt in the eye,

to the eyeball protruding from its socket or completely

missing. For a foreign object in the eye such as dirt or

sand, this is a good time to pull out that sterile Q-Tip

swab that we carry in our First Aid Kit. Make sure you

have a steady hand, a soft touch, a calm voice, plenty

of good lighting, and try to swab out the particle. You

can also attempt to wash it out with sterile water, like

bottled water or tap water, using anything else can

cause an infection. If the eye injury is severe, then

you must cover the eye with a sterile piece of cloth or

dressing from your First Aid Kit. If the eye is protrud-

ing or out of its socket, then try to cover the eye with

a paper or plastic cup and secure it with tape or cloth.

Under NO circumstances do you attempt to push the

protruding eye back in its socket, you can cause moredamage. Of course, try to restrain your emotions,

especially if it is a loved one.

So, lets reiterate, wear glasses or goggles with

safety lenses or a helmet shield, do not rely on your

windshield alone, wear the right colored lenses for the

time of day, and be prepared for any emergency out

    on the road.

    Sherri ParkerMemorial Ride 2008

    By Holly Hofer

The Sherri Parker Memorial Poker Run & Bike Show

was held on Sunday, October 26, 2008 in Driver. The

weather was perfect for a great ride and bike show. A

record number of friends old and new came out to show

their support and what an awesome sound of thunder

it was as the bikes rolled into Driver! Sherri lived in

Driver her entire life and was loved very much by her

family and friends. This event is a wonderful way for her

friends and family to celebrate the memory of someone

so terribly missed by all. Sherri was tragically killed by a

hit and run driver 15 years ago while riding her Harley.

She loved nothing better than to ride rain or shine

and it didnt matter where you went just put it in the

wind. Sherri never met a stranger, always rooted for the

underdog, and was a true friend .The monies raised

from this event are donated to the Driver Volunteer Fire

Department and the Sherri Parker Memorial Fund Inc.

which maintains a memorial ower garden located at

the gateway into Driver. Thanks to the tremendous sup-

port of the biker community the garden stays in bloom

all year. It is such an incredible feeling to know that thisride that myself and Eddie Boyce started has turned

into an annual event for so many bikers. As Sherris

twin sister I thank all of the volunteers who came out

and made the day so special. Many of these friends

knew Sherri her entire life and rode a many of mile with

her. We all get very emotional on this day as they share

some of their memories that they have of her. They

have become very dear to my heart and very special

friends to me and my family. The bike show was incred -

ible with 10 categories of deserving winners. We also

saw some bikes we hadnt seen at our show beforeand that was pretty cool too. Jason Boyce, Brad Brown

and I did the judging and both of those guys know their

stuff! Gary Harvey took Best in Show with his awesome

softail and that was an emotional moment for his family

and mine because he knew Sherri and loved her. We

cannot express our thanks to the biker community. Your

hearts are so giving. We thank you all for coming out

and supporting us and we hope to see you again next

    year!!! Ride safe.

    Shop TalkThe Great Crate Debate

    Continued

    By Steve Taylor

So you want to go faster huh? Well, HOW fast? As

I have said before: Speed is a question of money. At this

level of performance, you are either in the game or youre

not. In other words, costly. Remember this: you will never

get the money out of it for what you have into it If you are

looking for an investment, buy real estate. Personally, I like

to go fast and I dont care HOW MUCH it costs. My bike(s)

have what I call an unlimited expense account. Its how I

feel because its what I want. Ever ride a Harley with a builtmotor? Freakin unbelievable. Even the stock displacement

purist of riders will take notice. There is nothing like it

in the world. Here for a good time and not a long time.

    RIGHT?

Lets weigh our options. First, you can invest in

your stock motor for the added kick, or you can purchase

a crate motor. Keep in mind though that any stock

congured motor was not designed for any big inch

application. That is why there is what is called crate

motors. Crate motors are just that. They arrive to you in a

crate. Already built, sometimes pre-run, and ready to drop

in and bolt up. But there is a price to pay. Not to mention

having to beef up the drive-train because like what I said

previously, the stock product was not designed for such an

increase in horsepower and torque. Lets talk crate product

    as well as prices.

First and foremost, S&S. I consider S&S to be the

innovator of Harley performance. They have been making

performance parts for Harleys since 1958. Truly an icon in

the industry S&S provides complete motors and drive-trains

ranging in sizes from 80 cubic inch to 145 cubic inch. Sixspeed transmissions and heavy duty clutches are offered as

well. Not to mention individual parts if you choose to build a

    motor yourself.

The basics. An Evo based Big Twin 96 cubic inch (3

    5/8 bore x 4 5/8 stroke) crate motor retails for $5,285.00,

complete with an S&S carburetor and ignition system.

A lot of bang-for-your-buck here. Just drop it in and go.

Add polishing, black powder coating, throw in some billet

and you are up to approx. $6,500.00 Keep in mind these

upgrades do not increase the power or reliability. At the

other end of the spectrum is the 145 cubic inch (4 3/8 bore

x 4.8125 stroke) tribute motor. Termed tribute because

S&S celebrated their forty-ve years in business and

Harley-Davidsons one-hundred years in business. These

motors are brutes. Not designed for parade bikes, these

motors want to go. Base prices for these motors start at

$10,250.00 and can be tted with a carburetor or fuel

injection (extra of course!). Want something old school?

S&S offers a replica Panhead style motor as well as a

Shovelhead design. The Pan motors start at $8,000.00

    with a 93 cubic inch (3 5/8 bore x 4 stroke) displacement

The Shovel motors cost about the same with the same

displacement. Truly a sight to behold. I also would like to

point out that the Panhead motor will t a 1948 through a1999 Harley-Davidson chassis. The Shovel motor will t

    1966 through a 1984 chassis. A 93 cubic inch Panhead

motor in a Softail frame? Awesome.

Next up we have motors built by Ultima. Ultima

is a division of Mid-West Motorcycle. These motors are

available in sizes from 80 cubic inch to 140 cubic inch.

Termed El Bruto, these are work horses. A 100 cubic inch

    Evo-based motor (3.875 bore x 4 7/8 stroke) retails for

$5,919.00 An Ultima motor with a cubic inch size of 140

    (4.400 bore x 4 5/8 stroke) sells for $8,500.00 I wish to poin

out also that the 140 cubic inch produces 160 horsepowerwith 175 foot lbs. of torque. I call them stump pullers. No

messing around here. This is power that you feel in the

seat of your pants. The El Bruto series motors are built with

U.S.A. components. Kind of like a mutt motor. Where as

S&S uses mostly all their own product(s).

Want something a little more retro? Tedd Cycle

offers an 84 cubic inch (3 bore x 4 stroke) replica

Knucklehead motor. Pretty cool looking but assembled with

a variety of parts and components from around the globe.

Another mutt motor. Retail prices on these are $8,807.00

Tedd Cycle also offers replica Panhead and Shovelhead

motors. All mutts. There are many more worthy built motors

available that I could mention (maybe next month?) but this

months article was written so that you could become a little

more knowledgeable in the performance crate motors that

are available in the market today.

Thank-you for your time and keep the shiny side up.

Screamin Eagle/Vance & Hines Rider Takes Title with Winin Semi-FinalsPOMONA, Calif. (Nov. 16, 2008) - Screamin Eagle/Vance& Hines rider Ed Krawiec overcame a 20-point decit towin the 2008 NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle championship atthe season-ending Automobile Club of Southern California

NHRA Finals at Auto Club Raceway. The championship isthe fourth NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle title in ve seasonsfor the Screamin Eagle/Vance & Hines Harley-Davidsonteam.

We are really excited to bring the championship back hometo Milwaukee, said Krawiec. I have to thank team ownersByron Hines and Terry Vance, my crew chief Matt Hines andmy teammate Andrew Hines, and Anne Paluso and everyoneat Harley Davidson. We won this championship with hardteamwork.

Krawiec started the nal weekend of the 2008 NHRA POW-ERade Drag Racing Series in second place, 19 points behind

NitroFish Buell rider Matt Smith. Smith, the reigning Pro StockMotorcycle champion, gained a point on Krawiec by leading allqualiers for the event with a 6.967-second run. Krawiec quali-ed second at 6.987 seconds.

Trailing Smith by 20 points - exactly one round of elimina-tions - Krawiec started Sunday eliminations by defeatingPeggy Llewellyn in round one and then used a 0.019-secondreaction time and 7.042 ET to narrowly defeat a 0.043/7.022pass by Chip Ellis. Smith beat Mike Berry in the rst round, butsaw his shot at a second title slip away when his motorcyclebroke during his second-round run against Chris Rivas. Thatleft Krawiec and Smith tied, with Krawiec needing a win over

his Screamin Eagle/Vance & Hines teammate, Andrew Hines,to clinch the title in the semi-nalround. Krawiec (7.098) beat Hines(7.609) to win the rst NHRA title ofhis career. Krawiec had a chance tocap the weekend with an event win,but his 7.009-second run was notenough to beat a event-best 6.929pass by Rivas.

Ill tell you, coming into theseason I was hoping to get a winor two, and nish in the top ve inpoints, said Krawiec. That didnt

happen, but weve been able toaccomplish something thats onlyhappened once before in NHRAhistory. The level of competition isso high, but this has always been avery consistent team, and that paidoff this season.

Krawiec is only the second cham-pion in NHRA history to win his titlewithout winning a national event. The 31-year-old rider succeededwith consistency, making four

    nal-round appearances, reach-

ing the semi-nals ve times, and posting the No.1 qualifyingtime at three events. He lost in the rst round just three timesin 17 events. Krawiec won the eight-rider Ringers Gloves ProBike Battle bonus event at the NHRA Mac Tools U.S. Nation-als on Labor Day weekend. Krawiec entered the ve-raceCountdown to One playoffs in seventh place, 80 points behin

rst-place Smith, but was runner-up in Charlotte to jump tofourth place. He reached second place with a seminal nishin Dallas then scored back-to-back runner-ups in Richmondand Las Vegas to pull within 19 points of Smith.

In 2007 Krawiec left his job as track manager at Old BridgeTownship Raceway in Englishtown, N.J., to race full-time forthe Screamin Eagle/Vance & Hines team, and placed seventin the Pro Stock Motorcycle standings that season. Krawiecstarted motorcycle drag racing in the AMA Prostar series in1999, where he won nine events and placed second in seriespoints in 2002 and 2003. He made his NHRA racing debutat Englishtown in 2004. He now lives in Avon, Ind., near the

Vance & Hines race shop. The championship is the fourth NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle

title for the Screamin Eagle/Vance & Hines team. AndrewHines rode a Screamin Eagle Harley-Davidson to win the titlefor three consecutive seasons from 2004 to 2006. The Vance& Hines organization has now won 11 professional motorcycldrag racing titles.

Andrew Hines won at Atlanta and Madison, Ill., in 2008, andmade three other nal-round appearances during the seasonHines was the No. 2 qualier in the Countdown to One play-offs and nished the season points race in fourth place. Hinesand crew chief Matt Hines also won the Full Throttle Pit Crew

Championship in the Pro Stock Motorcycle division, which recognizes teams for performance andconsistency during qualifying over thcourse of the season.

A man goes to his doctor for his physical and gets sentto the Urologist as a precaution. When he gets there, hediscovers the urologist is a very pretty female doctor. The female doctor says, Im going to check your pros-tate today, but this new procedure is a little differentfrom what you are probably used to. I want you to lieon your right side, bend your knees, then while I checkyour prostate, take a deep breath and say, 99. Theguy obeys and says, 99! The doctor says, Great. Nowturn over on your left side and again, while I repeat thecheck, please take a deep breath and say, 99. Again, the guy says, 99. The doctor said, Very good. Nowthen, I want you to lie on your back with your kneesraised slightly. Im going to check your prostate withthis hand, and with the other hand Im going to hold onto your penis and your testicles, to keep them out ofthe way. Now take a deep breath and say, 99.The guy says, One .. Two ... Three.

A distinguished young woman on a ight from Irelandasked the Priest beside her, Father, may I ask a favor?Of course, child. What may I do for you? Well, I boughtan expensive womans electronic hair dryer for myMothers birthday, that is unopened and well over theCustoms limits, and Im afraid theyll conscate it. Isthere any way you could carry it through Customs forme? Under your robes perhaps? I would love to helpyou, dear, but I must warn you: I will not lie. With yourhonest face, Father, no one will question you. Whenthey got to Customs, she let the priest go ahead of her.The ofcial asked, Father, do you have anything todeclare? From the top of my head down to my waist,I have nothing to declare. The ofcial thought thisanswer strange, so he asked, And what do you have todeclare from your waist to the oor? I have a marvel-ous instrument designed to be used on a woman, butwhich is, to date, unused. Roaring with laughter, theofcial said, Go ahead, Father. Next!

Two elderly ladies are sitting on the front porch in Foun-tain Hills, doing nothing. One lady turns and asks, Doyou still get horny? The other replies, Oh yeah, sure Ido. The rst old lady asks, What do you do about it?The second old lady replies, I suck on a lifesaver. Aftera few moments of intense thought, the rst old ladyasks, Who drives you to the pool?

Two biker chicks are talking and Frizzy says, youknow, some women try to turn back their odometersand lie about their age, and Roxie says real slow, Notme. I want people to know why I look this way. Ivetraveled a long way and most of the damn roads werentpaved.

Three women friends, one in a casual relationship, oneengaged to be married and one a long-time wife, met for

The followingweek they met up again to compare notes.Sipping her drink, the single girl leered and said,Last Friday at the end of the work day I went to myboyfriends ofce wearing a leather coat. When all theother people had left, I slipped out of it and all Ihad on was a leather teddy, black stockings andstiletto heels. He was so aroused that we made wild, passionate love on his desk right then and there! The engaged woman giggled and said, Thats prettymuch my story! When my ance got home last Friday,he found me waiting for him in a black mask, leatherlace-up bustier, black shnet stockings, and stilettopumps. He was so turned on that we not only madelove all night long, in every room of the house, hewants to move up our wedding date! The marriedwoman put her glass down and said, I did a lot ofplanning. I made arrangements for the kids to stayover at Grandmas. I took a long scented-oil bath andthen put on my best perfume. I slipped into a skin-tight, lace up the front & back silk teddy, a black garterbelt, black stockings and six-inch stilettos. I nishedit off with a black mask, ready for action! When myhusband got home from work, he grabbed a beer andthe remote, sat down and yelled out,Yo, Batman, whats for supper?

Origin and Evolution of Toys for Tots

    Colonel William L. HendricksUSMCR (Ret)

Toys for Tots began in 1947 when Major Bill Hendricks,USMCR and a group of Marine Reservists in Los Angelescollected and distributed 5,000 toys to needy children. Theidea came from Bills wife, Diane. In the fall of 1947, Dianehandcrafted a Raggedy Ann doll and asked Bill to deliverthe doll to an organization, which would give it to a needychild at Christmas. When Bill determined that no agencyexisted, Diane told Bill that he should start one. He did.The 1947 pilot project was so successful that the MarineCorps adopted Toys for Tots in 1948 and expanded it intoa nationwide campaign. That year, Marine Corps Reserveunits across the nation conducted Toys for Tots campaignsin each community in which a Marine Reserve Center waslocated. Marines have conducted successful nationwidecampaigns at Christmas each year since 1948. The initialobjective that remains the hallmark of the program today isto bring the joy of Christmas to Americas needy children.Bill Hendricks, a Marine Reservists on weekends, wasin civilian life, the Director of Public Relations for WarnerBrothers Studio. This enabled him to convince a vast arrayof celebrities to support Toys for Tots. In 1948, Walt Disneydesigned the Toys for Tots logo, which we use today. Disneyalso designed the rst Toys for Tots poster used to promotethe nationwide program. Nat King Cole, Peggy Lee, andVic Damone recorded the Toys for Tots theme composedby Sammy Fain and Paul Webster in 1956. Bob Hope, John

Wayne, Doris Day, Lorrie Morgan, Tim Allen, Kenny Rogersand Billy Ray Cyrus are but a few of the long list of celebri-ties who have given their time and talent to promote Toysfor Tots. First Lady Nancy Reagan served as the nationalspokesperson in 1983. First Lady Barbara Bush served asthe national spokesperson in 1992 and in her autobiogra-phy named Toys for Tots as one of her favorite charities.

From 1947 through 1979, Marines collected and distrib-uted new and used toys. On Reserve drill weekends duringOctober, November and December, Reserve Marines refur-bished the used toys.

From Christmas 1980 through the present, Marineshave collected and distributed only new toys. Three fac-tors dictated this change. First, the Secretary of DefensesTotal Force Program, introduced in the 1970s, assignedReserves a greater role in Americas defense posture. Asa consequence, Reservists had to dedicate every minuteof weekend drill time to honing and polishing combat skills. No time was available to refurbish toys. Second, publicawareness of the health and safety aspects of toys thatdeveloped during the 70s made distribution of used toyslegally inadvisable. Third, distributing hand me down toysdoes not send the message Marines want to send to needychildren. The goal is to deliver a message of hope, whichwill build self-esteem and, in turn, motivate needy childrento grow into responsible, productive, patriotic citizens andcommunity leaders. A shiny new toy is the best means of

accomplishing this goal.In the late 1980s, the Marine Corps determined that a

non-prot charity was needed as an integral part of theoverall national Toys for Tots program. Based on this need, the Secretary of Defense, in August 1991, authorized theMarine Corps to recognize and work with a charity commit-ted to supporting Toys for Tots. Based on this approval, theMarine Toys for Tots Foundation became an operationalorganization in September 1991 and has been the fundraising and support organization for the U.S. Marine CorpsReserve Toys for Tots Program since that date.

The Foundation was able to satisfy the ve needs iden-

tied by the Marine Corps. First, the Foundation couldprovide toys to supplement the collections of local unitsthat had fewer Marines due to military cutbacks of the 80sand 90s. Second, the Foundation could arrange and payfor the creation, publication, manufacture and distributionof promotion and support materials to Toys for Tots coor-dinators - something the declining budgets prevented theMarine Corps from doing any longer. Third, the Founda-tion could enable individual and corporate donors to Toysfor Tots to take a charitable deduction on their income taxreturns. Fourth, the Foundation could enter into contractswith corporations to conduct promotions, which would pro-duce royalties for Tots for Tots. (Needs three and four were

two important elements of this charitable endeavor that theMarine Corps, as a federal agency, could not fulll). Fifth, the Foundation could ensure that the Toys for Tots programoperates in compliance with IRS regulations, state laws anregulations and charitable standards.

The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation celebrated its 10thanniversary as the fund-raising and support organization foToys for Tots in 2001. The highlights of the year were thatthe Foundation had its most successful campaign to dateplus was ranked #289 in the 2001 Philanthropy 400. Thiswas the rst time the Foundation earned a ranking in thePhilanthropy 400.

Over the 59 years of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toyfor Tots Program, Marines have distributed more than 370

million toys to more than 173 million needy children. Thischaritable endeavor has made U.S. Marines the unchal-lenged leaders in looking after needy children at ChristmasOver its 16 year life span, the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation has supplemented local toy collections with more than70.2 million toys valued at more than $387 million; plus hasprovided promotion and support materials valued at over$4.7 million.

DEMAND FOR HARLEY-DAVIDSON XR1200 SPARKS AMERICAN DEBUTRiders Order Hundreds of New Hot Rod Sportsters Before Ofcial Release

MILWAUKEE (Dec. 1, 2008) - Inspired by the XR-750, themost dominating American dirt track racing motorcycle of all-time, the Harley-Davidson XR1200 is now poised to boostadrenalin levels on streets, roads and highways around theworld.

The XR1200 is a powerful new Harley-Davidson hot rod

motorcycle that was initially designed and launched only inEuropean markets in April 2008. With the high degree ofinterest and passionate reception surrounding the bikes Eu-ropean release, as well as demand from Harley riders andcompetitive brand owners alike, the XR1200 is now beinglaunched in all markets.

Drawing signicant styling inuences from the successfulHarley-Davidson XR-750 motorcycles that set new stan-dards for dirt track racing success over the last 30 years, the XR1200 features technical innovation to provide potentstreet performance and handling. In fact, Harley-Davidson dirt track racing legends Scott Parker and Rich King partici -pated in the XR1200 development.

The XR1200 is an exciting motorcycle with an aggressive attitude, said Bill Davidson, Harley-Davidson Vice PresidentCore Customer Marketing. This bike will provide the performance and distinct style demanded by uncompromising riders

In fact, hundreds of XR1200s were ordered by enthusiastic customers before we really even promoted it.The successful dirt track legacy continues today as Harley factory rider Kenny Coolbeth won his third straight AMA

Grand National Twins at track championship on the XR-750 in 2008. While distinctive racing paint and graphics on theXR1200 will catch the eye, Harley-Davidson racing tradition and inuence are clearly evident in the bikes key features, design and style.

The 1200 cc Evolution V-Twin engine with its high 10.0:1 compression ratio, performance cams, downdraft fuel injectionprecision-cooled cylinder heads and large capacity oil cooler cranks out high torque. Rubber mounted to a new frame witha cast aluminum swingarm, the engine delivers exhilarating performance and responsive handling with less vibration. Aunique upswept, high-volume 2-1-2 straight shot exhaust system includes dual mufers and is nished in satin chrome.

A sport-tuned Showa suspension with inverted 43 mm front forks and twin preload adjustable shocks combines withlightweight black cast three-spoke wheels to make the XR1200 ride and corner with feeling. Specially designed Dunlop(RQualier D209 tire
