The cup is run over 1200m at weight-for-age plus penalties for Gr1 Gr2 Gr3 and listed victories The 18 month expiry window for these wins to apply means that the 4kg Normanz would have incurred for his career-peak Gr1 Golden horse Sprint success does not count ndash that was way back in may 2014

Why are we being locked out is Keyit has been my experience that most of whatrsquos worth know-

ing in life can be learnt from horses Or from working with them Because horses pay no attention to who you are None whatsoever They judge you on hOW you do things And how you do things generally informs and influences how THEY do things Which is great provided you are doing things correctly

The bad news is if you get it wrong your horse will start behaving in an undesirable manner (which most people term lsquobehaving badlyrsquo) And if your horse is acting up the hard truth is that to figure out why you generally donrsquot need to look fur-ther than the nearest mirror

In pursuit of nothing in particular I found a really good article recently discussing a common rider error (usually caused by lack of knowledge) of trying to get a horse to do what you want by force rather than by learning and employing the correct aids ldquoyou cannot force an animal that outweighs you by ten times It is illogical If you try to over power the horse you will failrdquo Instead the writer advocates meticulous implementation of the correct principles ldquoIf done right it offers balance and feeling I encour-age everyone to work these aids and rework them until they make sense until they are habit you will know when you are doing it right it will feel right It will make life easier a balanced horse is a simpler horserdquoSimplicity is the key

easy in theory incredibly difficult in practice The key is to keep trying and to keep practicing until you understand and then until you get it right consistently horses and riding problems are very good at niggling at you and making you pick at them until you find a solution

unfortunately this habit is not always con-sidered an asset in other aspects of life

Stakesas Irsquove still not had a satisfactory resolution

to my queries regarding Stakes and how they are set Irsquom having another go at trying to unravel them this week because Irsquom a little bemused by the Racing associationrsquos refusal to communicate with me with the Sporting Post and by extension with all of you

at the time of corporatisation the assets of racing were pooled into a public compa-ny called Raceco which would eventually become what we know today as Phumelela Because the race clubs had handed over their

assets the Thoroughbred horseracing Trust was formed to act as a safeguard on their behalf The Trust was established as an independent entity given a large portion of Phumelela shares and mandated with ldquothe protection and furtherance of the interests of the racing industryrdquo I feel the word lsquoprotectionrsquo is particularly important

In order to carry out its mandate the Racing Trust is funded by the dividends it receives from its Phumelela shares The Trust owns somewhere in the region of 3525 of Phumelela shares (it may in fact be a little more than that) I have no idea what that translates to in actual number of individual shares but I expect a third of all Phumelela shares adds up to a lot It is public knowl-edge that Phumelela posts record profits year on year Therefore I have a feeling that the Racing Trustrsquos Phumelela dividend cheque probably requires an extra large box to accommodate the final figure

It is my understanding that the Trust is a non profit organisation and that its income is supposedly distributed across the stakes pot the Gauteng Jockeys academy the Gauteng Work Ridersrsquo Programme the informal racing sector in the Northern cape (anyone else find this particular item a little odd) contributions towards research and development in respect of african horse Sickness and special projects such as contributions towards hIV testing of grooms

unfortunately the Racing Trust does not feel the need to divulge any of its dealings so we do not know whether it does in fact contribute towards any of those initiatives and if so to what extent It would also be nice to know what other lsquospecial projectsrsquo those funds might be made available for who can apply and what the process is Irsquod vote for a training programme for retired jockeys in line with the uKrsquos JeTS a database to track our retired racehorses or possibly even the pres-ervation of some of our historical information much of which seems so scattered Or maybe even a website for the Racing Trust

The Stakes AgreementWhat we do know is that the lsquostakes potrsquo

section comes up for negotiation with the Oper-ator every year If the Racing Trust is true to its mandate to protect the interests of the racing industry it stands to reason that they would fight to keep their contribution to the stakes pot to a


Not In My NameI believe a few of our Ra and Racing Trust folk are unhappy

about the fact that I published their names so I have done so again this week and very deliberately too because I think itrsquos important Why Because these are important jobs and itrsquos im-portant to know who is doing them

I wish I could take credit for breaking into the Ra offices in the dead of night to obtain and somehow lsquobreakrsquo this fabulous infor-mation Sadly the truth of the matter is rather pedestrian and

very unexciting I went to the Ra website downloaded the latest annual report and voila There it was Truly The Ra directors are listed on Page 4 and the Racing Trust Trustees on 0 Really not that big a deal at all So the Ra pipped me to the lsquobreaking newsrsquo post by a period of quite some months If itrsquos OK to publish it on the Ra website and annual report then there can be no reason not to publish it in the Sporting Post

The names of previous Trustees were also dissemi-nated and I have written about them too So Irsquom not quite sure what has changed (other than a few names on the list)

Back to the subject at hand I am reasonably sure no-one held a gun to the head of any of

the current Racing Trust Trustees or the Ra board of directors to take up their positions We constantly hear how everything they do is lsquofor the good of racingrsquo so why then have an issue about making their names and contributions public

One puts your name to something as a public show of commit-ment It serves notice that you are taking up a position of respon-sibility and it stands as a personal reminder to have pride in your work and to deliver your best I recently read that in a healthy democracy the people must lead and then the government will follow Why do the captains of our industry seem so determined to do it the other way round

When a group of people want to occupy positions of incredible influence in secret we have a problem

When a group of people want to govern large sums of commu-nity money and feel they are not answerable to that community we have a problem

If Knowledge is Key why are we being locked outRight so now itrsquos likely that everyonersquos good and cross with me

again Well for what itrsquos worth Irsquom cross too for having to waste my time with boring subjects like this which should have been clarified years ago and left me to pursue more interesting stories

Wouldnrsquot it be nice to see a glimmer of either ndash or both ndash at some point in the future

however now we need to discuss the Racing association because the Racing association has been appointed to administer the affairs of the Racing Trust No I donrsquot really understand why either however thatrsquos the way it is so itrsquos worth listing who the Ra is and how it works as per page 4 of the Rarsquos 2016 annual Report the Ra Board is comprised of William Nsele (chairman) michael leaf WGc miller (Free State Northern cape region) m K Naidoo (the same one who chairs the SaNGaTa Groomsrsquo association) trainer Grant Paddock representing the eastern cape re-gion Tellytrack boss Rob Scott and larry Wainstein mr larry Wainstein is also the ceO

The Racing association is funded primarily by the Operator by way of the nominations and accept-ance monies it receives from owners in lsquoPhumelela countryrsquo This is fairly clearly the case if one refers to page 29 of the Ra annual report where it reflects that the Ra receives just over 1 million in membership fees and a little over R15 million in nomination and acceptance monies Given that the operating expenses of the Ra amount to just over R165 million per annum (including a salary bill of over R5 million R27 million for advertis-ing and R600k on the website) it seems fair to say the Operator (via owners) funds the lionrsquos share via noms and acceptances

The other reason it is important to know who the Ra board is and how it works is because they nominate 5 of the 7 Trustees to the Racing Trust Board

Racing TrustFor the sake of clarity the Racing Trust Board currently compris-

es ownerbreeder Brian Finch (chairman) Steinhoff Klawervleis Johann du Plessis Investecs mark currie moutonshoeks chris Gerber louis du Preez and lastly Gideon Sam and Vinesh maha-raj from SaScOc

To recap - not only does the Racing association nominate 5 of those 7 Trustees it also manages the affairs of the Trust unfor-tunately they do not seem to want to explain exactly what this management function entails

I find this problematic Given the hefty sums of money involved as well as the rather

delicate relationships between the three bodies one would think the various entities would be falling over themselves to make this transaction as transparent as possible and put the matter beyond any and all reproach But sadly this does not seem to be the case and as we have seen any enquiries are met with a very firmly closed door

This begs the question why

In a Mailbag letter to the Sporting Post in mid 2016 prominent owner Brian Burnard voiced concerns over a number of racing issues in his home province of KZN Stating that ldquoit serves no purpose trying to lsquo duck and dive lsquo the issuesrdquo he said ldquoThe only solution I can see is for owners to take up the responsibility for their own horsesrdquo

mr Burnard did just that canvassing for support and establishing the Independent Ownersrsquo association which held its inau-gural meeting on 23 February 2017 in the members lounge at Greyville

In his address he stated ldquoThe main objectives of this association is to give the Owners who are the principal financiers of horseracing a voice in all matters pertain-ing to this sport of ours and at the same time negotiate the best returns for their substantial investment therein and afford them a enjoyable experience in horserac-ing likewise whether we like it or not to achieve our goals while remaining aware of the financial problems that exist Owners need to bring their side to the party in keeping their racing accounts up to date and actively participating in improving the lot of the Racing Industry and while we strive to achieve these objectives going forward I believe it should be done in a constructive and not destructive mannerrdquo

After an interesting and varied career covering everything from fitness to horse feed to running the Summerhill School of excellence heather Morkel has recently joined Bloodstock South Africa in a sales liaison capacity With the BSA Cape Yearling Sale just around the corner we catch up for a quick chat about whatrsquos in store

heather grew up in the Western cape graduating like a num-ber of other prominent women in our industry from hottentots holland high School in Somerset West

heather graduated with an executive Secretarial diploma (3 year qualification which included Finance and mercantile law) before following her real passionpersonal fitness training spe-cialising in obesity and cardiac rehabilitation

her husband Russell is in forestry as part of mondis executive team and it was after relocating to KZN for his job that heather found her way to Summerhill Stud in 1997 This was still some years before the midlands Nursery had achieved its first Sa Breedersrsquo championship so heather has been an integral part of the Summerhill story

The Summerhill ExperienceldquoIt was serendipity for merdquo enthuses

heather ldquoIrsquod been working at a legal practice at the time and answered an ad It is the most beautiful placerdquo Starting out as mickrsquos Pa heather quickly moved into hR before mondi transferred the morkels to Joburg It was the first time heather resigned from Summerhill but it wasnrsquot the last and has become the subject of good-natured banter between her and Summerhill boss mick Goss In fact as shersquod made herself such an indispensable part of the team by then Summerhill simply opened a marketing office in emmerentia to accommodate her all of this happened while the industry was looking to set up the first equine Trade council and when matters had progressed far enough to

need someone to head it up heather was a natural fitcongratulating her on a most incredible career path heather is

typically self-deprecating ldquoGenerally what happens is that mick infuses everyone with his enthusiasmrdquo she says modestly ldquoIrsquom spectacular in my ordinariness but Irsquove been very fortunate with the opportunities Irsquove hadrdquo Ordinary or not the Trade coun-cil got off to a busy and successful start as locally bred horses started getting the ball rolling internationally ldquoIt was probably a little ahead of its time but I like to think we contributed to the start of something that will continue to support the export of horses and ensure that Government remains vested in the estab-lishment and negotiation of practical export protocols Obviously trainers like mike de Kock and his stalwart band of owners have taken recognition of South african Racing to the next level as did Sa-bred horsesrdquo

Family tiesaside from her professional pursuits heather has enjoyed

long distance running and cycling and fits in some trail run-ning Family is also very close to her heart and she and

Russell celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary this year They have two daughters amber

and megan Twenty-five year old amber is the oldest and currently doing a mas-ters degree in population studies meg-an is 22 and recently graduated with a BSc in dietetics and is currently working at mseleni hospital in rural North-ern KZN

Vaal Classic CrashesThere is expected be fallout from

Tuesdayrsquos abandoned Vaal meeting af-ter the National Horseracing Authority announced that they will be investi-gating the circumstances that led to only 4 of the 9 carded races being run

This was the first race meeting on the Vaal classic surface since it was closed last November for its annual mainte-nance programme during which time the trackrsquos drainage was enhanced

The first two races both down the straight went off flawlessly but con-cerns were raised after Race 3 over 1700m

a track inspection was held and the distance of Race 5 was reduced from 2000m to 1700m

after the running of Race 4 over 1700m however the jockeys expressed concerns about the safety of the track around the turn

It was then mooted to switch the remaining races round the turn to the Outside Track but after consideration this was deemed unsafe

The only alternative was to move the running rail from the classic Track to the Outside Track which had not been prepared for racing But despite every effort it was found it would take too long to remove and re-install

In the end there was no option but to abandon the meeting

In terms of distance the easiest victo-ry at Turffonteinrsquos inner track on Tuesday afternoon was that of the Sporting Postrsquos top bet ROyal uTOPIa when getting off the mark in the maiden 2200m always top of the boards the 21 favourite was soon up handy She was ridden to lead approaching the 400m marker and went on to score with authority by three and three quarters

a mR88 handicap topped the bill and in what proved to be the fastest of the three 1600m races the well supported FaReeQ registered his fourth career victory he took a bump when the gates opened but despite that was soon in touch with the leaders he ran on strongly in the short home straight and under a well-judged ride from callan murray he comfortably accounted for the front running cumBeRlaNd by a length and a quarter mike de Kockrsquos charge has now won four from twelve

Very unusually there were no sprint rac-es in Pietermaritzburg on Wednesday The first three races all took place over 1400m and not surprisingly the fastest of these was the middle Stakes won by the favour-ite SecReT WaRNING he got away well when the gates opened and raced close to the speed throughout he put his head in front shortly after passing the 200m pole and went on to score very comfortably from the running on The POeT by two

They also ran three races over 1600m and quickest home amongst these was chROme Blue In a race that looked to be run at a steady pace throughout the winner raced in the rear for most of the journey he fairly flew when the race developed into a sprint 400m out and in what proved to be a real thriller he got up in the very last stride to deny lONel-yaReTheBRaVe
