BEACHPORT IRB CARNIVAL
Friday 25th May 2018 Issue 106
Saving SA that makes a commitment to provide a certain number of patrolled days in the season. Our first patrol was held on New Year’s Eve, which went off without a hitch. We launched our IRB and it was great to showcase it in front of the community that had shown us so much support and encouragement leading up to this point. We continued to provide patrolled beaches up until February 2018. During this season we also established a long list of sponsors that have helped our club immensely. The amount of community support continues to be overwhelming it is a real part of our club’s success. This year also saw an added dimension of training in that we needed to train both IRB drivers and crew. This was achieved with the assistance of our interstate friends, Portland Surf Life Saving Club. They have continued to provide us expert training, knowledge, time and general help over the last year. We have made great friendships along the way, which was an unexpected outcome.

Beachport Surf Life Saving Club has recently received some exciting news that we will be hosting the IRB (Inflatable Rescue Boat) state carnival on the June 2018 long weekend. This event will see all clubs within South Australia, and about five from Victoria converge on Beachport for 2 days of racing and competition. It will be a great event for Beachport, which we hope to continue on a yearly basis. It will showcase yet another dimension of what the Surf Life Saving movement has to offer. The club has achieved so much this season in such a short amount of time. They were presented with a brand new IRB and 4WD Patrol vehicle along with patrol equipment earlier in the season, and now have a viable off-site storage facility. Special thanks go to the Beachport Lions Club for making the off-site storage a reality. These were both huge moments for our committee who had worked hard over the previous two years to achieve this. We signed a patrol agreement, which is an agreement between our club and Surf Life

Under the auspices of the BDDA and in conjunction
with the Wattle Range Boat Ramp Committee and
Professional Fishermen’s Association a forum will be
held in Beachport on the 5th July 2018. (Time and
place to be published in the next edition)
The Boat Ramp has been operational for enough years
now that its strengths and weaknesses, costs,
environmental issues have been observed by the many
who use it and are affected by its continued operation.
There have been many and varied suggestions on how it
can be improved. In order to achieve the desired
outcome and the BDDA believe that the time has come
when action is needed to do something positive towards
the objectives of:
1. Lowering costs
2. Lowering environmental impact
3. Keeping it useable for 12 months of the year while
at the same time, making the maintenance
operation more simple.
We are extremely fortunate that Luke Campbell has
agreed to come all the way back from Western Australia
to be present at the meeting to help clarify engineering
queries. Most of you would be aware that Luke was the
author of the WGA report commissioned by the Wattle
Range Council regarding the Beachport Boat Ramp. That
report was presented to the Council on the 27th December
2017.
It would be a good idea for the attendees of the forum to
familiarise themselves with the contents of that report before
the Forum. The report is available from the Wattle Range
Council.
In the Report there are varied approaches suggested –
including one that would cut back the cost of dredging by half.
Every interested person is welcome at the proposed Forum and
to contribute in a constructive way to improving and simplifying
the operation of the Boat Ramp. Remember, it is not about
moving the boat ramp, it is about improving the boat ramp and
its footprint.
Keep an eye out for the posters advertising the Forum and a
notice in the SE Times for more detail about time and venue.
If anybody is unable to attend the Forum and wants to put
forward their ideas and suggestions please send those
submissions in writing to the BDDA c/o Beachport Post Office
or email [email protected] prior to the end of June.
It is anticipated that ideally the meeting would come up with
short, medium and long-term objectives.

BEACHPORT SURF LIFE SAVING CLUB NEWS (continued from page 1) We also went to Cape Bridgewater at the end of the season on a camp, which lived up to all expectations and was simply amazing. This year we encouraged all ages to attend- we had members ranging from 5-50
years attend. The weekend consisted of IRB training, viewing the seal colony and having fun on the beach.
This has been a season of new experiences for all club members. We have continued our successful Nipper and Youth sessions, which included both fun and educational programs that the kids needed to achieve. We also participated in Clean up Australia Day. We had members who had never seen an IRB to gaining qualifications to drive them. We had teenagers who have only played traditional sports to now being
given the responsibility of being patrol captains.
We are a multidimensional club that believes we can offer something for everyone. As our club vision states we are, “a unique water safety organisation that is inclusive of community needs through delivery of emergency service, training, education and sport.” Our members come from Beachport, Millicent, Glencoe and Mount Gambier. Anyone is always welcome to join our club. Enquire through our Facebook page
‘Beachport Surf Life Saving Club’ and we will provide you with further information.
Looking back over this season we are proud of everything that we set out to achieve. However there were other outcomes we achieved that were not on our agenda for this season; these included bringing families together, creating friendships, building confidence and giving our youth meaningful responsibilities and giving back to the community that has supported us openly since our first community consultation at
Bompas in 2015.
The final session of the season was held at the Beachport Bowling Club earlier this month with the AGM and a family friendly bowls afternoon with locals. Well done to all involved and look forward to seeing old
and new faces in the 2018/2019 upcoming season starting off the new season later in the year!

CHATTERBOX
Another month has blown by, and we are now entering into the
winter season. If you haven’t packed away the summer gear and
brought out the winter woollens, you had better get a move on!
Although I am not yet frozen, I can see grey skies, and notice the
cold winds whipping the last leaves off my fruit trees.
I was lucky to have a week in Bright this past month. The autumn
leaves there were amazing…blazing gold, rusty and red in every
direction. There were lots of open gardens one could visit. I was
able to poke around and pry into how people over there set up
their garden areas. There was nothing really out of the ordinary
in the way of flowers, but some interesting vegetable patches,
and chook yards. The Autumn trees were the main drawcard.
Lots of people spent their days raking! One place served
delicious lavender scones and pots of tea!
While we were in Bright, they had a market day, much like the
one we have in Beachport several times a year. I was amused to
see the local school children playing their ukuleles to an
appreciative audience of parents, grandparents and passers-by!
Another feature of the market day was a parade. Every group in
the town had a float. It was very entertaining. It reminded me of
the parades we had here in Beachport a few years ago!
When I got home I was aware of lots of work happening locally
with the building industry. I hope the projects all get their roof on
before the winter really sets in. Some of the FOR SALE signs
have disappeared, and I guess that means places have new
owners, or the present owners have decided to “stay another
day…or year”. Welcome to any newcomers to the district. I hope
you enjoy living in Beachport!
A couple of weeks ago I noticed a bus load of teenagers, a city
school group, having surfing lessons at Beachport. I saw that the
bus belonged to Christies Beach High School and I chuckled
because I remember as a teenager myself, we were taken to
Christies Beach to learn to surf. I must confess that I never really
mastered the art of surfing, and I think it’s too late for me to learn
now. I do still enjoy a swim with the Sea Urchins, but I have
stored my gear away for the winter!
By the time this goes to print the Biggest Morning Tea will have
been held. Thanks to the local craft group for organising this
event each year and to the Bowling Club for allowing it to be held
at their clubrooms.
For those setting out for their winter holiday in warmer places,
enjoy yourself, keep healthy and drive carefully! Have fun!
BEACHPORT FILM SOCIETY
AGM will be held prior top the movie at 6:30pm. The movie
will be screened on Friday 25th May at 7:30pm. This
month’s movie is The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie
Society. In 1946, a London based writer begins exchanging
letters with residents on the island of Guernsey which was
German occupied during WWII. Feeling compelled to visit
the island, she starts to get a picture of what it was like
during the occupation.

An old recipe out of my Mum’s recipe book I can remember her making for a sandwich filling. Would make a great vego dip or sandwich filling. Will keep in fridge for one week.
1 large ripe tomato, peeled and diced ¼ medium onion, finely diced 2 Tbs grated cheese 1 Tbs butter ½ teas dried mixed herbs 1 egg, beaten Salt and pepper to taste
Cook all ingredients except for egg until onion is tender in a small saucepan. Lastly add beaten egg and stir until mixture thickens. Add salt and pepper if needed. You can spread on bread, cut into fingers and bake in oven, 180 until crisp and slightly brown. Can be used as a dip or sandwich filling.
Store in fridge when in container when cool.
