THURSDAY 22nd MARCH, 2018 ISSUE 430 Dear Parents, Students and the Wider Community, What a fantastic term we have had here at Boneo Primary School. I cannot believe how fast the term has gone and all of the wonderful things that have been happening. Over the past couple of weeks I have had the opportunity to attend the GRIP conference, Boneo Market, Mrs Wright’s retirement function and some professional development from the Education Department. GRIP Conference Last Wednesday I was fortunate enough to attend the GRIP conference with our 2018 school leaders. This was a fabulous opportunity to work with these students around stepping out of their comfort zone, ‘leading like a strawberry’ (same on the inside as the outside ), taking a risk and being the best they can possibly be. The students were exceptional on the day and I would like to thank Mrs Ruch for organising the event and Georgina Trapman for accompanying us on the train. School Council Our School Council ballot has been finalised and I would like to welcome Rachel Johnson as a new member along with Lynsey, Kathy, Cathy, Adam and Skye who will be continuing on. I would also like to congratulate Emily Becker as our new staff representative. Thank you to all who participated in the ballot, this was appreciated. Aussie of the Month Once per month an ‘Aussie of the Month’ award is given to a student that has demonstrated service to their community. I am pleased to announce that in March, Tristan received this award for engaging in car park duty at the market, giving back to the community. An outstanding effort Tristan! Mrs Wright’s Retirement Last Friday, Mrs Wright returned for a special goodbye assembly and a small function after school. On her behalf I would like to thank everyone involved for their attendance and participation in putting this assembly together. Mrs Wright was a little overwhelmed and very pleased to see everyone to celebrate her six and a half years here at Boneo. A big thanks to Ms Sison and Ms Gunn and their teams for the beautiful choir and DT performances. In conclusion, I hope everyone has an opportunity to rest up and spend time with their families over the holiday period. I look forward to seeing you all in term 2! Dear Parents, Students and the Wider Community, What a fantastic term we have had here at Boneo Primary School.

From the Desk

of Mr Cooper

Welcome to the final newsletter for term 1. Many great things have happened this term, beach days, camps, excursions and sports days. Congratulations to our student leaders who continue to grow with each assembly on Friday afternoons and in their daily tasks around our wonderful school. Planning for our Family, Food and Fun Night, continues as we get closer to this great event. Many thanks to our class co-ordinators who have given of their time to ensure that everyone at Boneo will have a fantastic event on Friday 20th April. Class rosters have been displayed on many class doors so if you are available could you please add your name to the list. Attendance at Boneo continues to cause concern. Amanda is doing a fantastic job, contacting parents who fail to inform the school of a reason for an absence. Please familiarise yourselves with the following document taken from the Department website

Attendance Policy for Parents

Going to school every day is the single most important part of your child’s education. Students learn new t hings at school every day. We want our students to get a great education, and the building blocks for a great education begin with students coming to school each and every day. There is no safe number of days for missing school – each day a student misses puts them behind, and affects their educational outcomes. School Supports The school has a wellbeing team and Multicultural Aides who can support you and your child to ensure they attend school on time every day. Notifying the school of an absence School attendance is mandated under the Education Training and Reform Act 2006. It is the responsibility of parents/ carers to ensure their child regularly attends school. Parents must contact the school to provide an explanation on the day of the student absence (phone or Flexibuzz). The school will contact you within three days to seek a reason for the absence. If no contact can be made with you or your emergency contacts the absence will be recorded as an unexplained absence and also be noted in your child’s file. You can contact the classroom teacher at any time with either a verbal or written explanation for your child ’s absence. Acceptable reasons for an absence The main reasons for absence are: Sickness We understand that at times your child may become unwell. It is vital that they’re only away on the days they are genuinely sick, and setting good sleep patterns, eating well and exercising regularly can make a big difference.

Family Holidays

It's vital that holidays are planned during school holidays and not during the term. Any holidays during school time must be approved by the Principal in advance. An application form will be provided by the classroom teacher or at the administration office. What are unexplained or unapproved absences? The principal will approve or not approve any absence on a case -by-case basis. The teacher will record an absence as ‘unexplained’ if no explanation about the absence is given to the school. Unacceptable reasons for allowing a child to stay home from school, include; completing adult duties such as child-minding and interpreting, keeping an adult company, visiting friends and relatives, shopping trips and birthdays. Remember, every day counts. If your child must miss school, speak with your classroom teacher as early as possible. Department Guidelines For more information and resources relating to attendance please visit: www.education.vic.gov.au/school/parents/behaviour/Pages/studentattendance.aspx

Enjoy the break and remember the FF&F Night!

Cheers

PAYMENTS FOR EXCURSIONS & CAMPS We are receiving an increasing number of payments where the cash envelope has the Direct Deposit/BPAY box ticked but the payment has not yet been made. This is very time consuming as we check for payments each day and we are presently having to go through large numbers of envelopes and then contact the parent concerned to confirm if the payment has actually been made. In most cases it hasn't. Please only send the permission form back once the payment has been made and note the receipt number from the bank on the front of the envelope. (Please see example shown) We are also receiving a high number of late payments. Payment must be received strictly by the return date on the permission form. Payments will no longer be accepted after the due date and we would not like to disappoint due to late payments. Please note BPAY payments can take up to 3-4 days to appear in the schools bank account. We thank you for your assistance with this request.
