ChancellorWELCOME FROM THE
I would like to take this opportunity to thank our generous donor community for supporting our students through the Academic Prize and Scholarship Programs.
Philanthropy at CQUniversity continues to play an important role in rewarding our students and helping them to achieve success. With your support, we are able to celebrate the wonderful achievements of our students and support them as they navigate their individual learning journeys with CQUniversity.
In fact, in many cases, it is the generous support of our donors that allows many of our students to complete their qualification and give back to their communities, whilst for others, the support provided in the early stages is simply the head start they need to be able to pursue their dream qualification.
I hope that our donors understand the tremendous impact their support has. I thank you for your continued commitment and look forward to sharing and witnessing the positive returns on your support in the future.
Congratulations to all students receiving an award this evening!
Mr John Abbott, BEng(Mech) QIT, LLB QUT, CPEng, RPEQ, FIEAust, MAICD

On behalf of CQUniversity, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the 2019 Student Awards Ceremony.
We are incredibly proud of all of our students, and I want to congratulate each and every one of you on your hard work, dedication, sacrifice and determination to succeed. As you navigate your learning journey and career I also encourage you to embrace new-found opportunities with the confidence of knowing you have the support of those around you.

GET TO KNOW
Morgan
My name is Morgan Lewis and I am a fourth-year Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)/ Diploma of Professional Practice (Co-op Engineering) (Mechatronics Major) student and recipient of a CQUniCares Downer Scholarship.
Growing up, I never quite knew what I wanted to do. I’ve always looked at the world as a supplier of endless opportunities, so picking just one career to pursue was a hard prospect. Deep down, I think I always knew I wanted to become an engineer.
At the end of 2017, I was preparing for the first of two, six-month industry placements and approaching everyone I knew in the engineering industry. I was awarded the CQUniCares Downer Scholarship and everything just fell into place. In the past 18 months, I have been offered so many amazing opportunities thanks to the wonderful team at Downer. I’ve developed both in my personal and professional capabilities and will be forever grateful that everything aligned to make this possible.
‘In the past 18 months, I have been offered so many amazing opportunities thanks to the wonderful team at Downer…’

Malcolm
My name is Malcolm Maloney and I am an Aboriginal person from Quandamooka country. Now living in Geraldton, my Aboriginal heritage stems from my mother’s side and is connected to Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island) in Queensland.
I am also a Bachelor of Education (Primary) student and CQUniCares Kate Mullin Indigenous Scholarship recipient. Out of all my siblings (seven in total), I am the first in my family to attend university.
My scholarship will allow me to meet daily living expenses and university costs whilst completing professional practice. The thought did cross my mind that without this support, I might have had to pull out of my degree altogether.
I would like to thank my donor, the Kate Mullin Association. You are contributing to my success at university and my future success as a fully qualified Teacher. Thank you for believing in me.
‘My scholarship will allow me to meet daily living expenses and university costs whilst completing professional practice…’

My name is Haylee Brodin and I am a CQUniCares North Queensland Sports Foundation Scholarship recipient, studying a Bachelor of Paramedic Science.
I am extremely honoured to receive my scholarship. Not only has it helped with my studies but allowed me to continue playing and competing at a national level in the sport that I love – Hockey. Without it, I wouldn’t have been able to go away and represent my country, alongside the Australian Country Women’s Hockey team earlier this year. I hope to also gain selection in the coming years, whilst continuing to fulfil my dream of becoming a Paramedic.
To still have that opportunity is a life-long dream and one I will never forget, even after graduation.

9
My name is Zac Newland and I am a third-year Engineering student and the recipient of The Walter and Eliza Hall Trust Fund Scholarship and CQUniCares Appeal Scholarship.
Of my time at CQUniversity, I would have to say I found my second year the most difficult. I completed my first year via distance and moved on-campus for second year to continue my Mechatronics major. This was a huge move for me as it was my first time living away from home. I walk with callipers and a walking frame and when not in those I use a wheelchair, so leaving my support and moving to a totally different environment where I had to take care of myself and continue with my studies was rather daunting.
My scholarships have helped me with my textbooks, university fees and accommodation expenses and allowed me to focus on my studies without having to worry about my finances. I was able to purchase a new laptop which had the capabilities required for my engineering course.
Knowing that I have the support of The Walter and Eliza Hall Trust Fund Scholarship and the CQUniCares Appeal Scholarship encourages me and assists me in the belief that I can achieve my dream.

TOGETHER WE
Create ChangeAt CQUniversity, we recognise that it’s not just our students and their families who benefit from CQUniCares. Our generous donor community shares our belief that by investing in our students, they are also investing in our communities.
For long-term prize donor WIN Television Rockhampton, this support spans more than 40 years. Through their donation of an Academic Prize, awarded annually to the Rockhampton region student who achieves the best results in the Feature Writing (JOUR12010) unit, they hope to empower and develop the next generation of journalists entering their professional life.
‘It is key that media affiliates work closely with institutes such as CQUniversity to empower and encourage students and staff alike to maintain a high standard across all levels of the industry.
The WIN Network wishes to congratulate all student recipients. We look forward to the continuation of our partnership with CQUniversity for many years to come.’ – Mr Matt Cook, Rockhampton Sales Manager, WIN Network
