Students will learn the basics of setting up and weaving a Nantucket basket. Stakes and weavers are cane. You will learn the basic over under weave of a Nantucket. Students will weave a square, open base, and then learn how to get a perfect cathead shape while weaving the sides using a continuous weave. The spokes and weavers are space dyed with two colors. This useful little basket is an excellent introduction to coiling, using glycerine pine needles and waxed linen, with challenging variations for more advanced coilers. DIAMONDS KAREN KOTECKI

DIAMONDS starts on an oval oak base with narrow slot-no twining. Dyed and natural spokes serve as a weaving guide, with dyed bleached cane as weavers for the Diamonds. Spokes are glues to the rim row; lashed with waxed poly cord. There is a different DIAMONDS pattern on each side, one open and one closed. Color choices will be available. Special Tools: Super glue.

Another in my series of swirl-base baskets, a technique that covers a drilled wood base with swirled spokes. Catch the twist both in the start and in the finish. This design takes the spokes on a journey from the base to the lacey rim finishing with a gentle cascade as they find their way back to home base. A small Shaker fruit basket woven with black ash splint over a class mold. This basket is the classic cathead shape woven with 1/8” or 3/32” splint. PINEAPPLE WINE LAURA LEE ZANGER

If you ever needed a welcome basket this is the one for you. It can hold a bottle of wine and the pineapple is the universal symbol of welcome. This basket begins with a basic round base. The curls are simplified and made uniform with the use of a pencil’s eraser. Embellished with a raffia bow and welcome sign and it could be gift enough. Tools – wooden clothespins

AMERICAN PIE DEBBIE MROCZENSKI

Woven in the colors of cherry and blueberry, this patriotic pie basket starts on a wood base and is large enough to hold two deep dish pies. Stack them in the basket with the insert included. Rim overlaps are hidden by the shaker tape handles secured with brass rivets. The rim has an overlay and is stitched with waxed cord. Learn: Twill, double rim. Tools: Insta-cure Purple Label Glue.

This is a rustic farmhouse basket. The oval base will be weaver-ready for class. Rim & rope handle will be attached with wax linen. The “crossing paths” design will be added with 3mm reed. The miniature carrier is woven with black ash splint over a class mold. Discussion will focus on weaving with fine ash splint and techniques used in weaving smaller baskets including making rims and handles. Small sharp scissors and small copper clips will be needed.

This double wall basket begins with a basic round base. The first wall weaves straight up forming a vase for dried or silk flowers (not included). The serpentine roll over rim is simple twining. The outer wall is start and stop rows that taper to the base. Shaping tips will be shared. The feathers are made by inserting 8 different groups of color strips into the wall space between the two sides. Tools- wooden clothespins

Woven on a class mold, Nantucket Stripes has a carved base with scalloped back/bottom; base choices and color choices given. Chase weave with color and natural cane. Placement of staves is taught so that you will weave a stripe. Cherry slip-on rim.

Weave a square open-weave base with wood feet, start/stop rows up the sides using both natural and smoked weavers, add a rim mid-way up the sides and at the top, and attach wood handles to the sides using leather lacing. Both rims are double lashed with smoked reed creating Xs for an interesting effect.

Interlaced is all about the rim. Start with round reed spokes which are inserted into a slotted wood base. Weave on a class mold for a quick weave to the top. With plenty of time to spend on the rim, you will be able to concentrate on the lovely interlaced technique that gives you this dynamic rim. Learn: Braided rim, weave on a mold, attach base to mold. STACKED DEBBIE MROCZENSKI

This round basket is generous in size and easy to weave. The placement of spokes, weavers and overlays creates the Stacked pattern. Spokes will be glued to the rim row which gives the rim weaving a neater finish. The technique for adding the leather handles hides the overlaps inside and out, and puts the handle openings around both rim bands. Woven in black and natural.

The Blue Ridge is a traditional Cherokee-style burden or pack basket that could be used for corn. Hickory bark or cloth ties could be placed around the square section to create a tumpline or shoulder straps for hands-free carrying. The corn could be picked and tossed over the shoulder to funnel down into the basket. The 1-3-5 twill design represents the Blue Ridge Mountain tops. Students will learn how to transition a basket rom one shape to another. Tools – alligator clips, metal spoke weight.

The Cowee is a traditional Cherokee-style burden or pack basket that could be used for gathering corn, Hickory bark or cloth ties could be placed around the square section to create a tumpline or shoulder straps for hands-free carrying, The corn could be picked and tossed over the shoulder to funnel down into the basket. The 1-3-5 twill design is the four peace pipes. Students will learn how to transition a basket from one shape to another. Tools – alligator clips, metal spoke weight.

Students will learn the basics of setting up and finishing a Nantucket basket. Basket is woven over a class wire mold. Weaving begins with cane in an over under pattern and changes to a twill to finish off the basket. Cherry base, lid and cheater rim will be pre-finished. Tool kit will be provided for class use.

DRAGONFLY is just so cute and another embellishment to add to your tool box. This brightly-colored insect is created with beads, reed, waxed cord, and colored wire. Lots of wire forming and weaving techniques to learn to get it just right. Material for 4 Dragonflies is included in kit; at least one will be completed in class.
