EXTRAORDINARY ORD (Documentary, USA, 24 Minutes) By Eric Palmer

In 1994, Fort Ord closed, leaving behind 28,000 acres to the Monterey Bay Community. Almost 20 years later, the community continues to struggles over how to envision its future. Once a bustling training

center, the base is now home to toxic blight and empty lots, housing communities and educational institutions, and a vast wilderness of forests and dunes.

Extraordinary Ord explores the Fort’s storied history, takes you deep into the 18.000 acres of epic wilderness and examines the various proposals, successes and challenges since the enclosure.

STATEMENT FROM THE FESTIVAL DIRECTORS Welcome to the 5th Annual Monarch International Film festival! Each year, we come together in celebration of the creative art

of visual storytelling and the embodiment of the human spirit. Film has the power to transcend cultural, geographical and

linguistic divides. It is the passion of original stories that soothes us, make us laugh, make us cry or sing along with others we

otherwise would never have had the chance. Independent film is as varied as the people creating it, and it is for this reason that

we are proud and honored to yet again showcase these artists work and bring them to the big screen in a mutually creative

environment, where their discipline, courage, expression and passion can be displayed.

Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for joining us in celebration of Independent Film.

hours of footage of strange crafts floating across the Monterey, California skies. We follow

unexplained phenomena. Director Justin Gaar looks well beyond the case for UFOs and turns the

focus towards Roppolo, a filmmaker, a musician and a horror fanatic. Roppolo sheds light on

personal tragedies that shaped him as an adult, and why this unrelenting obsession also brings him

inner peace. Friday, December 9th, 2016: 8:00PM with Q&A to follow.

FOR THE BIRDS by Gary Rotter

(Documentary, USA, 88 Minutes) UNITED STATES PREMIERE

It is said there is a pigeon for every person in New York City. That would be about 8,400,000

pigeons. Perhaps because of their large numbers--causing us to interact with them on a daily

basis--or maybe because of the misinformation surrounding them pigeons are one of New York's

most hated animals, arguably as much as the common rat. However, three people have decided

to take it upon themselves to stand up and protect a flock of pigeons in Washington Square Park,

to inform people of the inherent value of a small creature that is usually the object of scorn, and

to stop pigeon nettings throughout the entire city which leads to a bizarre existential threat

looming over every flock that ends with death in Pennsylvania. Three people have decided to

become a voice for the birds. Thursday, December 8th, 2016: 5:30PM with Q&A to follow.
