Neighbor’s Cold Shoulder Uninformed

Featured Homes

ImmACULAtE!

Dear Doreen, My home sold so fast, I’m

afraid my agent priced it too low. He assures me he didn’t, but I can’t imagine he would admit that now. one of my neighbors won’t speak to me saying I am ruining prices in our neighborhood. Did my house sell too cheaply?

—Three-day-sellerDear Three-day-seller,

after looking at your numbers and the comparable sales, I believe the offer you received is a bit high. If this is

a cash offer, you are in great shape. If the buyer is getting a loan, be prepared for an appraisal that comes in too low. Proof for your neighbor, but bad news for you. Unless the buyer is willing to pay more than the appraised value, you will have to reduce your price or put the home back on the market. Neighbors often don’t know the actual market values in their neighborhood and everyone likes to think their home is worth more than it is.

Family-friendly Anthem Denies Neighborhood Hoop FunI live on a close-knit, quiet, family-

friendly cul-de-sac in Anthem. Most of the nine residents on Peale Court are originals. We have watched our kids go from diapers to driving. We pride ourselves on creating an atmosphere where our kids feel safe and inspired to play outside together, whether they are 5 or 15.

Recently we moved a neighbor’s basketball hoop from their backyard to the middle of the cul-de-sac for all of the kids to enjoy, and did they ever! Kids who usually are glued to their Xbox or their iPod were suddenly enjoying camaraderie during a game of hoops, or H-O-R-S-E. The adults were even spotted out there late at night getting their workout. Put away were the Nerf guns and ninja swords and returned were cheers, giggles, and playful taunts by sweaty and happy children.

Until, the HOA made us put it away. It is in no way an eyesore and it is out of the way of traffic, as we are not on a through-street.

My child came home from school, immediately grabbed his basketball and ran towards the street and stopped. “Where is the hoop, I want to get the kids?” he asked, close to tears. I love Anthem and have lived here for 12 years. Isn’t Anthem’s biggest draw the family-friendly atmosphere? Pick your battles, HOA; there are weeds and chipping paint aplenty. It makes me sad that our little hoop is causing you such a disturbance.

Club Sends Mixed Messages With Events

The Anthem Country Club has sunk to a new low in their quest for money. It has announced it

will sponsor a “Cigar Dinner” on June 15. Do you see the irony (hypocrisy) in their sponsoring a golf and tennis charity event to raise funds for cancer research and then later sponsoring a “Cigar Dinner,” when research has confirmed that the use of tobacco will cause cancer? The Club makes money by sponsoring both events.

We gave you some fun things to do with your kids this summer [See “10 Cheap Ways to

Combat ‘I’m Bored!’ ” In&Out, May 23.] Now it’s time to ditch the kids and have some grown-up fun. You could leave them home, but who needs the guilt and the worry?

Here’s a list of fun places to drop the kids while you seek some fun of your own.

1. Co-op with your friends or neighbors

We teach them when they’re toddlers, we can do it to: take turns. Get with your friends or neighbors and work out nights to swap the kids so you can take your sweetie (or yourself) out. This can be the most affordable option. When it’s your turn, take the kids to the dive-in movie at the community center, grab flashlights and go for a night hike, cook something (incorporate a trip to the grocery and let them pick their own pizza ingredients), build something…

Keeping them occupied with an activity makes the hours pass and keeps the kids focused and out of trouble. Don’t forget to include them in the clean-up. Then look forward to your next night out.

2. Harkins Theatres PlayCenter2550 W. Happy Valley Rd., Phoenixharkinstheatres.com/playCenter.aspx623-582-2020$6/per child for the duration of the movie. (For ages 3–8)

If you want to see a movie that doesn’t involve talking animals or wimpy kids but you don’t have a sitter, Harkins Theatres at Norterra has a PlayCenter where kids can hang while the grown ups watch a movie. It’s cheaper than most sitters and they arm you with a pager, should junior have a critical need. Reservations recommended.

The triple-digit temperature onslaught has hit. And, we notice

it most during our commute. We hear about it “on the nines” on the car radio. Smokey Bear signs remind us of Arizona’s blazing heat. Temperature boards, and maybe your car’s data display, show remarkably high numbers. While the fire danger outside your windshield may be high, you may actually be traveling in your own extreme fire danger.

Not on Our RadarThe sheer number of so-

called car-b-ques should stop you in your tracks. According to data from the U.S. Fire Incident Reporting System, approximately one in seven fires responded to by the fire departments is a highway vehicle fire.

Sixty-one percent of highway vehicle fires and 35 percent of fatal highway vehicle fires originated in the engine, running gear, or wheel area of the vehicle.

The leading factor

EXTREME VALLEY TEMPS contribute to the risk of car fires. So does a car in need of maintenance. This car fire occurred in May on the 101 near Scottsdale. The materials in a car— vinyl, oil, gas, rubber—contribute to the spectacle.

CAR-B-QUE!

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR CAR CATCHES FIRE• PULL OVER as quickly as it is safe to do so. Be sure to use your signal as you make your way to a safe location off the road such as a breakdown lane or rest stop.• ONCE you have stopped, TURN OFF the engine.

• GET everyone out of the car. Never return to a burning car for anything.

• MOVE everyone at least 100 feet from the burning car and well away from traffic.

• CALL 9-1-1

Page 22: Thursday, June 13, 2013

contributing to the ignition of highway vehicle fires was mechanical failure (44 percent).

Insulation around electrical wiring (28 percent) and flammable liquids in the engine area (18 percent) were the most common items first ignited in highway vehicle fires.

Arizona’s extreme heat adds to the danger. Capt. Dave Wilson of Daisy Mountain Fire Department, said the number of car fire calls rises with the mercury. “For the car itself, it’s running hotter, especially with the A/C on. If the car is not maintained, it can lead to an increase in operating temperature and that can contribute to a fire,” said Wilson.

Use Your Nose There are a few simple ways to make

sure your car doesn’t end up charred on the side of the road or, worse, in your garage. (Remember the incident on Kit Carson Trail last summer?) If something smells funny in your garage, don’t ignore it. “A strong odor is a warning sign,” said Dave Fitzgerald of Meineke/Econo Lube. “Any oil-based product can ignite at certain temperatures.” If it smells, you may have a leak. Lonnie Oliver, shop manager at C&R Tire agreed, “If it’s fuel or electrical or oil, once you smell it, you won’t forget.”

More Clues…Arizona heat takes its toll on plastics

and rubber. Oliver advises keeping tabs on the many parts of your car made

of those pliable materials. “Check anything that’s rubber for cracking or if it has become too soft or crunchy,” he said. Belts can crack in the heat and, in newer cars, belts drive many important parts such as water pumps, steering and the charging system. If that belt comes apart, disaster can happen.

Another consideration is your catalytic converter. Fitzgerald knows of converters so hot they ignited the car’s carpet. If you own an older car, say one with spark plug wires, make sure those wires are not soaked in oil. “It can turn into an ignition source and start a fire,” said Fitzgerald.

In the end, all vehicles new or old can spring leaks and fail in ways that can lead to fires. Many shops offer inspections for free.

Mike Mielnicki of Mobil One Lube Express offers this simple suggestion: “Make sure you have a fire extinguisher in the trunk,” said Mielnicki. “During my 35 years of experience of working on cars, I have seen first-hand electrical fires, gasoline fires, anti-freeze fires and power steering fluid fires. They all had one thing in common: They are scary! They were all put out quickly by having a fire extinguisher close by.”

If it Happens…In all likelihood, your car won’t

end up a flaming I-17 road rocket. But if it does, “Get the car off the road, exit the vehicle and call 9-1-1,” said Wilson. And, if possible, avoid putting the vehicle in a brushy area. “Car fires don’t stay contained and can make for a fast-moving, dangerous brush fire,” said Wilson. io

Summertime Dilemma Home Alone KidsBy Karen [email protected]

“I don’t want to go. Can’t I stay home while you go to the store?” Sooner or later, every

parent has to determine when their child is old enough to stay home alone, and for how long.

If you’re included in the 59 percent of families with two working parents—according to 2012 U.S. Bureau of Labor statistics—you might have already tackled the home-alone dilemma.

According to a U.S. Census report released in April, “Who’s minding the Kids? Childcare Arrangements: Spring 2011,” 27 percent of 12- to 14-year-olds (2.9 million kids) regularly care for themselves. On average, the report stated that children spent seven hours per week in self-care. And, during summer break that number is likely higher.

But, the home-alone decision can be difficult because every child is different and Arizona law does not legislate the age at which a child can be left without

supervision, or the age at which a child can supervise other children.

The first time Anthem resident Michelle (last name withheld) left her then 12 and 9-year-old boys alone was for a 15-minute stint she’ll never forget. She went over all the typical rules—don’t answer the door for strangers, don’t tell anyone on the phone you are alone, don’t play with matches, scissors, knives... just watch TV and play nice.

“Fifteen minutes, that’s all I kept saying to myself... fifteen minutes that I prayed about before, during and definitely after. Fifteen minutes later I pull up to the sight of a huge bobcat laying across my front walkway... A freakin’ bobcat! Are you kidding? Needless to say, it’s been two years and I am just starting to feel comfortable again to leave for 15 minutes at a time,” Michelle said.

The Phoenix Police Department recommends a “reasonableness test” to help determine when a child might be ready to “hold down the fort” for short periods.

1. Can your child, regardless of his or her age, act reasonably in unexpected situations?2. Is your child mature enough to know what to do in an emergency?3. If there is a fire, is your child mature enough to get herself and younger siblings out of the house? In addition, the American Red Cross

offers an online babysitter preparation course for ages 11 and up, and the Anthem Community Center offers a childcare and babysitting safety course for ages 10-16.

Leaving your older child home alone might help promote independence and foster a sense of responsibility.io

When You Are Home Alone…

Keep doors locked and windows closed.

Activate the alarm

Don’t open the door for or talk to anyone who stops by unless the person is a trusted family friend or relative, and I have pre-approved.

Never tell anyone who calls that you’re home alone.

Remember, emergency numbers are posted by the phone, including mom & dad’s work and cell numbers, neighbors’ numbers, and the number for other trusted contacts.

Remember how we practiced the emergency plan in case of fire, injury, or other emergency. The plan is in [insert location of written plan].

First aid kit is [insert location of kit].

All medicines are locked and out of reach.

Cooking permissions are as follows: [Limit cooking by young children. Make sure at least one approved smoke alarm is installed and operating on each level of the home.]

Hours for TV/Computer: [Limit the time the child spends in front of the television or computer. Activate parental controls.]

For Kids With Outside Privileges

Check in regularly, and always check in before going anywhere or doing anything.

Take a friend when going anywhere. It’s safer and more fun.

Never take shortcuts without mom or dad’s permission.

Be Cautious at Play

Don’t be tricked by anyone offering treats or gifts. Never accept anything from anyone without our permission.

Don’t play near busy streets or deserted areas.

Don’t wear clothes or carry items with your name on the outside, and don’t be tricked when a person you don’t know calls your name.

Never go into a public restroom alone.

Don’t go near a vehicle with anyone in it.

Never take a ride from anyone without checking first with your mom or dad.

Don’t panic if you get lost. Find a safe place to go or a safe person to ask for help—someone with a badge or salesperson with a nametag.

Don’t be afraid to say, “No” and get away from a situation that makes you scared, uncomfortable or confused. Trust your feelings, and be sure to tell a trusted adult if anything makes you feel this way.

As of May 31, 30 cases of acute hepatitis A, possibly

linked with the consumption of a contaminated product, have been reported in Arizona, Nevada, Colorado and New Mexico.

The suspected product is Townsend Farms Organic Anti-Oxidant Blend sold at Costco and possibly other outlets.

Costco has removed the product from its shelves and is contacting members who purchased the product since late February.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, hepatitis A usually occurs when an infected food handler prepares food without appropriate hand hygiene. However, food

contaminated with HAV, as is suspected in this outbreak, can cause outbreaks of disease among persons who eat or handle food.

This particular strain of hepatitis A virus (HAV) is rarely seen in the Americas, but more common in North Africa and the Mid-East. If you experience symptoms of hepatitis A, seek medical attention.

If you have the product in your home, discard it immediately. If you have consumed this product within the past few weeks and have never been vaccinated for hepatitis A, contact your healthcare provider to see if you should be vaccinated.

Known worldwide for its beautiful red rock scenery, its New Age

vortexes and an array of fine lodging and dining, Sedona is less well-known for its pet-friendliness. Yep, your four-legged friend can join the family for a really great

time in Arizona high country paradise.

The 2013-2014 Official Sedona Visitor Guide lists 47 hotels in Sedona, West Sedona, Oak Creek Canyon and the Village of Oak Creek; Twenty of those are pet-friendly—and there are some pretty impressive places on that list. Take L’Auberge de Sedona, the

Hilton Sedona Resort & Spa and the Hyatt Pinion Pointe and Enchantment, for instance. Fido is welcome to spend the night at all of these amazing places. Pets are also welcome at Sky Ranch, the Best Western Inn of Sedona and the Orchards Inn. Many choices with varied price ranges can make your pet feel like he, too, is on vacation. (Remember, a well-mannered four-legged hotel guest is always kept secure on a leash for everyone’s enjoyment and safety, no matter how friendly or well-behaved.)

Hungry? Of the 45-dining establishments listed in the visitor guide, 26 welcome your pet. At Tlaquepaque, the whole family can dine on the patio of the Secret Garden

Cafe. Same goes for Ken’s Creekside, where you’ll get a view of Oak Creek and the red mountains while your pampered pooch selects a meal from “Ken’s Doggie Deck Favorites,” along with a complimentary bowl of “cold-filtered ice water.”

But what can we do with our dog along? Hike one of many pet-friendly trails in Sedona’s city parks and surrounding red rock landscape. (Our well-bedded and well-fed friend must always be on a leash on the trails and we, his humans, must always clean up after nature calls.)

Spend a day or even a few in stunning natural beauty. Plan to get out with your pet to Sedona. io

Italian cookie tray. It’s the first cookie snatched up as soon as the cellophane is removed from the 2-, 3- or 5-pound tray purchased from the neighborhood bakery for special occasions like birthdays, graduations,

weddings, anniversaries, name days, communions, confirmations, first day of school, engagements, baby showers, and any Sunday in between.

Since moving to the desert, I no longer have Angelo the baker crafting his cookies just down the street. My family has suffered severely from Italian Cookie Tray

The author and his mom.

Pignoli Cookies

1 pound of almond paste 1½ cups sugar 3 egg whites 1 cup pine nuts Directions •1 Preheat oven to 350 degrees.•2 Beat almond paste with electric mixer (or food processor) into fine crumbles.•3 Sprinkle the sugar over the almond paste and continue to beat until well incorporated.•4 Beat in egg whites one at a time until the batter is smooth.•5 Slightly moisten your hands and roll one tablespoon of batter into a ball between your palms. Then, roll the ball in a plate of pine nuts so the nuts adhere to the batter.•6 Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet and press down to gently flatten.•7 Bake until lightly browned yet soft, about 15–18 minutes. Remove and cool on wire rack.

Withdrawal (ICTW). Yes, I really have an acronym for this. So, my loving mom took action to ease our pain. She made it her business to learn and perfect the coveted pignoli cookie recipe. One day, I promise to send some cookies to Angelo in the Big Apple for his approval.

The pignoli cookie is a uniquely flavored and textured cookie. Surprisingly, though, it has only four ingredients. The pignoli nuts are pricey. The cookies commonly sell for more than $20 per pound. That makes them more expensive than lobster or filet mignon.

This will be published after Mother’s Day, but I would like to thank all moms for their devotion to family. To my own mom, I love you. You are our queen. And thanks for always treating me like the prince I think I am. Ciao, Bella!

Another Father’s Day is upon us. Time for dads far and near to dig in to the ol’ wallet and fish

out dollars for the kids, who will in turn, buy us gifts that we would have never thought

to purchase for ourselves.

My personal collection of booty from years past include (in no particular

order), a stuffed Snoopy decked out in fishing gear (I don’t fish much), a sculpture of a bear with a crudely carved golf club, a

handmade ceramic Triceratops (painted in a pallet of colors no self-respecting dinosaur would be caught dead wearing), a handmade ceramic kitty cat, a dozen toothpicks with tiny seashells glued to the tops, and a gen-u-wine

one-quarter scale reproduction of a diamondback rattler, to name a few.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not complaining. On the contrary, these trinkets and others are proudly displayed on the center shelf of the bookcase in my office, holding a place of high esteem like the treasures they are. The only gift that isn’t there is my Darth Vader Bobblehead that has proclaimed me “Galaxy’s Best Father,” which I think is a notch or two above “World’s Best Father,” though I’ve been unable to get unequivocal verification on that.

This year, now that the kids are getting a little older, I’m hoping I won’t have to finance the nifty gifties, but if I do, I really won’t mind all that much. It is the thought behind it that counts, but more importantly, it is the memory that attaches itself to the gift. Truth be told, I don’t always feel like the Galaxy’s best father; no matter how hard we try, no parent bats a thousand. But despite my flaws and shortcomings, I have a shelf full of proof that (at least sometimes) my kids think I’m out of this world. Father’s Day is a nice time to celebrate that. io

BUSINESS

Leaving the Station The Station, just more than a year

in operation, unceremoniously closed its doors and is to reopen, pending new ownership. The restaurant’s website and Facebook page made no mention of the closure, however a small sign on the Station’s door states it will reopen soon. How soon is not yet known.

The Station, opened just last year, when entrepreneur John Panfil purchased the historic property and decided to try his hand at the restaurant business. The Station, previously home to New River Station and Poor Red’s Station, touted a new, more health-conscious menu with natural food options.

Teen Wins $5K-ViolinGabrielle Lorenc plays violin at a

level beyond her years... and until recently, beyond her instrument. “Not having that higher quality instrument was holding me back in certain areas,” said the 14-year-old. But thanks to North Valley Symphony Orchestra and local luthier, Jody Summerford, Lorenc is playing a handmade violin valued at $5,000.

She won the instrument in a competition among North Valley Symphony Orchestra’s Symphonettes and Youth Orchestra. Contestants were required to write an essay and audition. Lorenc, with nine years playing experience, is the concert master for North Valley Symphony Youth Orchestra and plays second violin in the NVSO Adult Orchestra.

Summerford, inspired by NVSO’s efforts to nurture and develop young musicians, plans to donate a handmade instrument to the organization each year.

From left, John Frank, Jody Summerford and Gabrielle Lorenc.

POLITICS

One Percent Back in Your PocketThe temporary tax rate approved

by voters in 2010 expired May 31, reducing the state sales tax from 6.6 percent to 5.6 percent as of June 1. Also, the state rate for transient lodging (hotel tax) will decrease from 6.5 percent to 5.5 percent.

The tax decrease affects retail, restaurants, bars, and other categories.

It will negatively impact public schools as proceeds from the temporary sales tax benefited the state school system. Public schools around the state are bracing for budget cuts, resorting to larger class sizes and/or cutting back on certain programs. The sting is especially sharp after many schools have had to deal with significant budget cuts during the recession.
