MORE CASES OF CORONAVIRUS Five additional presumptive positive case of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have been reported to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) bringing the state total to 10. DHHS is awaiting final confirmation from the Centers for Disease Con-trol and Prevention (CDC). The new cases are family members of the woman who recently traveled to California and Nevada and tested positive for COVID-19. They live in Douglas County and are self-isolating at home. Isolation is separating sick people from healthy people to prevent the spread of disease. “These cases stem from fam-ily contact and are not considered community spread,” said Dr. Gary Anthone, Chief Medical Officer and Director of Public Health for DHHS. “Local health departments are leading this response at the community level with support from DHHS. Contact investigations have been initiated to identify people who came into close contact with family members to help prevent further spread. All identified close contacts will self-quarantine and be actively monitored twice daily by public health officials for fever and respiratory symptoms.”
FANS WILL BE LIMITED Based on the recommendations made by the Mayor’s Office of the City of Lincoln, Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department and the Nebraska Department of Education, the 2020 NSAA Boys State Bas-ketball Championships today will proceed as scheduled, but fan at-tendance will be limited. The tournament venues and game times re-main the same. Attendance will be limited to the varsity players, coaches, team support personnel (athletic trainers and student manag-ers) and school administrators of the qualifying schools and their im-mediate families. Immediate family includes parents, stepparents, guardians, siblings, other members living in the athlete’s household, and grandparents. School administrators will be required to provide a list of those persons meeting the qualifications for entry.
BEWARE OF CON ARTISTS In light of the ongoing developments related to the current coronavirus (COVID-19) situation, and its impact on financial markets, the Ne-braska Department of Banking and Finance (NDBF) is urging Nebras-kans to beware of con artists seeking to capitalize on fear and uncer-tainty. “We know con artists are opportunistic and use current events to cloak their schemes with an air of immediacy and legitimacy. Never make an investment decision without understanding what you are in-vesting in, who you are doing business with, where your money is go-ing, how it will be used, and how you can get it back,” said NDBF Deputy Director Claire McHenry. “Always ask if the salesperson and the security are registered with their state or provincial securities regulator.” Deputy Director McHenry also said investors should be on the lookout for scam artists trying to use the market downturn and the coronavirus to scare investors into so-called “safer, guaranteed invest-ments.” “If you have concerns about your retirement accounts or in-vestments, talk to your financial professional,” Deputy Director McHenry said. “Avoid making decisions based on panic or fear.”

SPORTS Nebraska held a 33-27 lead with 4 minutes remaining in the first
half, but Indiana responded with a 16-1 run going into halftime
and pulled away for an 89-64 victory in the first round of the Big
Ten Conference Tournament at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Nebraska
closes its season with a 7-25 record. Indiana advances to face
Penn State in Thursday’s quarterfinals. Nebraska’s exit from the
first round of the Big Ten Basketball Tournament took a backseat
to concerns about the health of head coach Fred Hoiberg on
Wednesday night. A visibly Ill Hoiberg left the team bench late in
the second half of the Huskers’ loss to Indiana. According to re-
ports, Hoiberg was taken to an Indianapolis hospital for examina-
tion. Following the conclusion of Wednesday’s game, no Nebraska
players or coaches participated in postgame interviews and the
team was quarantined in its locker room. Hoiberg was released
this morning after experiencing flu-like symptoms.
Because of the predicted winter weather system moving into the
area this weekend, the McCook Community College baseball team
is moving its games this weekend to Beatrice starting Friday. The
Indians will face the Storm in Beatrice Friday for a doubleheader
starting at 1 p.m. against Southeast Community College. While the
Saturday-Sunday weather forecast in Beatrice doesn’t look promis-
ing, the two teams will try and fit the final game if the weather
clears. If not, they will make it up later in the year. The Indians
are 12-10 on the season and lead the Region IX Empire League
standings at 6-3. The Storm is 11-8 on the season and 4-4 in the
Region IX Empire League standings. The MCC softball team will
host Western Nebraska CC at the Jaycee Sports Complex today.
The doubleheader will start at noon

QUOTE OF THE DAY
The small percentage of dogs that bite people is
monumental proof that the dog is the most benign,
forgiving creature on earth.
