CO-OP vs Regular

To transfer to co-op:1. Take the normal courses for a

student in math.2. Get an average in the high 80s or

more.3. Apply in 1B (next term).

Switching into a Plan

In general,1. CS or Honours Math plans – please

wait until you have completed 10 courses before talking to an advisor.

2. Business Plans (including double degree CS) – please see the appropriate advisor as soon as possible.

Grades

60 (Sixty)

In most math courses you want a 60, not a 50.

A 50 is a pass but a 60 is often required to progress to the next course.

If you are worried, see your advisor.

Success

Life happens to us all

Many of you will run into trouble while you’re here.

In and of itself, that’s not the end of your being a student.

The real question is not, “will there be trouble?” It’s “how will you respond to it?”

Success! Trouble Prevention

Success is a function “f(x,y,z,…)” of:A) Your HealthB) Your HabitsC) Your Ethos

Your Health

i) SLEEPii) Get out and do some social activities.iii) Eat right! iv) Monitor your physical health.v) Monitor your mental health.

Your Habits

i) Starting homework EARLY.ii) (Study)∞

iii) GO TO CLASS!iv) Go to extra help sessions, office hours,

math tutorial center and tutorials when available!

v) DO your assignments AND pick them up!

Your Ethos

• Ask for help when you are unsure• Tell instructors when and how you

worked with others• Do your own work• Don’t loan your homework to a friend

(you’ll BOTH get in trouble).• When in doubt, ASK YOUR INSTRUCTOR,

or ASK AN ADVISOR!

Cheating and Academic Offences

Jeff Henry

Cheating – Academic Offences

Avoid trouble Cheating on exams, assignments, work

term reports, quizzes, etc. Impersonating another students, or having

another student impersonate you on exams, tests, etc.

Plagiarism Fraudulent health claims

Disciplinary penalties are outlined in Policy 71http://www.adm.uwaterloo.ca/infosec/Policies/policy71.htm

You can collaborate, up to limits

Working with friends on a Math assignment and discussing how to solve each problem and what the answers are is not an academic offence if: Each student composes his/her own

written solution, and Each student acknowledges (names) the

student who contributed ideas

QUESTIONS. . .

Legend of the Pink Legend of the Pink TieTie

The Legend of the Pink TieThe Legend of the Pink Tie

Professor Ralph Stanton, the visionary behind the Faculty, also dreamed of ties. Striped ties. Dotted ties. He loved outlandish ties and his colleagues favoured his pink one. The pink tie soon came to be the unofficial symbol for Math at Waterloo. Sadly, Professor Stanton passed away May 2010, but know that it is because of him that every Waterloo Mathie wears a pink tie.

When the Math & Computer Building celebrated its official opening in 1968, a giant 85 foot pink tie appeared on the outside of the building as a tribute to Professor Stanton and his valued contributions. Every year, Math Frosh learn to worship the tie and all it symbolizes.

Mathies sometimes find it difficult to hang the tie right side up.

Unfortunately, the pink tie has been subject to sabotage and kidnapping over the years. The Tie Liberation Organization stole the math’s icon in 1984 and travelled across Ontario, snapping photos of it in Sudbury, Ottawa, and Toronto.

A second pink tie was destroyed during an attack by some engineering students in 1986. They launched a barrage of paint bombs at MC, covering the pink tie with gallons of white paint.

Thus, the Tie Guard came to be. These intelligent, courageous, and loyal subjects have a specific job: to protect the sacred pink tie.

The Tie Guard is now a permanent fixture every Frosh Week and has evolved into a central information point for incoming math students.

These students take the legend of the pink tie very seriously and some 1500 pink ties are distributed during

Frosh Week to new Mathies. Over the years, the tie has seen various styles, ranging from an historical wide version

popular in the 60s, to the skinny style favoured during the 80s. A collection of photos and pink tie memorabilia can be

viewed in the MathSoc office.
