Thanks for looking at edition one of Thursday Thunder News. Hope fully most of you are aware that Thursday Thunder is an internet based TV show about where we talk speedway – (check it out at www.thursdaythunder.com.au) it’s free.

Whilst on a Christmas break from the TV show we thought we would provide a you an insight into Speedweek through our eyes. A new edition will be available each day of Speedweek. To the team behind the scenes we are indebted to you- your endless support of my passion is greatly appreciated.

Speedweek 2013/14 version looks like being

a beauty. The young guns are squarely set to take on the old guard with the spice of some of Uncles Sam’s best. Steven Lines down South, Luke Dillon in the West and Robbie Farr on the East Coast have had outstanding starts to their seasons.

So with five nights of racing in two states over seven nights I thought it might be worth giving a bit of the Chief’s low down on what to expect and do for the next week as you crisis cross the landscape chasing racing. ROUND ONE - SPEEDWAY CITYFirst up is Speedway City located at Virginia just about 25 minutes drive north of the Adelaide CBD just off of the Port Wakefield road. Speedway City has hosted at least one round of World Series Sprintcars in every season of World Series Sprintcars since 1987.

The track is 430 metres in length and slightly banked and has a habit of slickening off , but always provides good racing. Then venue attracts a capacity crowd and there is great vantage points to catch the action either in one of the three stands that are free of charge to sit in or on the manicured grass mounds.

The catering at Speedway city caters pretty much for all tastes, there is the usual pie , burgers, dim sims, through to sandwiches, baked potatoes, and yiros. Those with a sweet tooth aren’t neglected either as there is a great ice-cream van that sells in my opinion the greatest hazelnut ice-cream in a waffle cone. There is also popcorn for sale.

The venue is licensed so you are welcome to enjoy a cold stiff drink with alcohol available from a couple of bars. There is adequate rest rooms and on nights like tonight there is portable toilet facilities located around the venue to ease the congestion.

Speedway City has hosted some of World Series most memorable moments, who could forget Phil March demoralising the field in the venues first round or the emotion of Jason Johnson’s victory several years ago after the tragic loss of his young sister. I’m sure the 2013 edition of World Series Sprintcars will serve up another memorable moment at Speedway City.

ROUND TWO - MURRAY BRIDGEAfter a well deserved sleep and rest we are ready to head up the freeway to Murray Bridge Speedway located an easy hour’s drive up the freeway from Adelaide. Murray Bridge speedway is a short track that is high banked and 360 metres in length. It provides great racing action and some of the best viewing of any tracks in speedway.

The venue is set in a natural amphitheatre with large terraced hills and grassy mounds. There literally isn’t a bad spot to watch in the venue. There is also an imposing and well laid out viewing platform and corporate facility that is available to watch from, although I’m pretty sure tonight you might have to book ahead for the spot for next season.

gear. The high gears don’t get any higher than with the launch of World Series Sprintcars on Boxing day in the bustling metropolis of Adelaide.

The catering at the speedway is good with fresh made burgers, rolls, steak sangers, pies, pasties etc and the best hot chips and gravy I’ve tasted at a speedway. The venue is licensed and you can purchase a cold can from the booth located on top of the turn 2 mound.

Speedweek isn’t always about the race tracks, sometimes you need to socialise and relive what happened the night before and this in my opinion requires a decent feed for lunch and a decent feed is guaranteed at the pub. Murray Bridge has several good pubs to enjoy a chat and parmy. My pub of choice is the big white pub on the main street just before the river called the Bridgeport Hotel. It serves good meals in a large dining area and is

frequented by many race fans and teams enjoying a meal and coke.

One thing you can count on sitting on the hill is finding yourself your becoming an instant expert on what happened the night before and what will unfold tonight and you eagerly regale people with

your views and find yourself listening to other conversations trying to gather the latest hot goss. While a number of teams and head straight to Mount Gambier straight after tonight’s action at Murray Bridge I prefer to bunk down in Tailem Bend and head to the Mount fresh.

ROUND THREE - MOUNT GAMBIERNight three of Speedweek is upon us already and despite being somewhat exhausted from two solid nights, you find energy levels are still high as you take the leisurely drive to Mount Gambier the home of Borderline Speedway. Mount Gambier and Borderline Speedway is one my favourite stops on the calendar. The track is a tight little 360 metre high banked bullring that provides great racing. The venue itself is always immaculate from the fresh sheep eaten grassed mounds down to the pine o’clean fresh smell of the loos.

Borderline speedway has some of the best catering at any race track in Australia... The soup is legendary, infact rumour has it the soup Nazi episode from the hit TV show

Seinfeld used Borderlines trademarked soup in its NO SOUP FOR YOU episode. You’ll also find you will more than likely have a few steak and onion sandwiches throughout the course of the evening.

At some point in the late afternoon don’t fear that the venue is under attack from birds, it’s just the native wildlife letting you all know they are still here and they too want to entertained

During the day I like to visit the South Eastern hotel and get a decent feed and cold coke and chat about life’s problem before going to the track. The menu is extensive and reasonably priced and has a variety of fresh salads to help you maintain a lovely slim figure. I choose to stay in Mount Gambier overnight generally staying at the Avalon

motel. See even in my sleep I still want to be at Avalon in one way or another.

The next morning I make my way to Warrnambool firstly stopping off at Scotts fuels on the highway heading towards Borderline Speedway to get a cold drink and a toasted chicken and cheese jaffle or two. ROUND FOUR - AVALONWith a long overdue night off to recharge I often find myself looking for a cold drink and I like sitting down on the foreshore watching the anglers trying to catch more than a cold.

Day four of Speedweek arrives and it’s a short two hour drive to Lara and Avalon Speedway. Avalon has been a perennial favourite of race fans on the Speedweek tour and they jam into this joint taking

every vantage point. The track itself is a fairly flat

400 metre oval, but it generally provides great racing. The venue has a wet area for those that would like a stiff drink and the canteen sells the usual foods, although I’m a bit partial to the steamed dim sims and soy sauce.

Facilities for spectators at Avalon are at best adequate although long lines can be experienced at the rest rooms. By the fourth night of Speedweek patterns are starting to emerge in the fortunes of the drivers and teams and you often get involved in hearty chats about the fortunes of so and so and the demise of others

For lunch on this day I find myself at the Lara hotel enjoying a decent steak and cold Sarsaparilla drink. After

the racing I drive back to my motel in Warrnambool ready for a good lay in the next morning.

ROUND FIVE - WARRNAMBOOLThe first day of the new year rings in and we find ourselves getting ready for the final night of Speedweek at my favourite race track Premier Speedway, Warrnambool.

The venue is a high banked 400 metre pleasure dome for racers and race fans alike. The venue has superb viewing from every vantage point and the catering suits all tastes. there is the usual fast food choices but also an extensive range of healthier lighter options.

The first lot of hot laps at speed gets your heart pumping as the cars running full noise on the banking leaves you gob smacked and starry eyed.

The track generally slickens off and then it becomes Sprintcar racing heaven as slide jobs and high-line antics come to the fore in a spell binding display of racecraft driving.

A week of heavy travelling and racing finds some people out on their feet looking for a bex and lie down, but I wouldn’t want it any other way.

During the day I start it with a nice breakfast and extra strong coffee at Figsellers Cafe and then find myself enjoying the final day of Speedweek with a lunch at The Flying Horse Inn. All too soon the points have been tallied, the trophy girls kissed and the winners smiling and it’s time to say good bye to the best week of racing season and promise yourself you’ll be back next season.

HOW IT HAPPENS

“The first component to designing a Sprintcar is chosing colours to match and work in with the frame and wheel colours. Coulour management is the key to making the design work, the next step is to create the striping making it look good with the sponsor logos provided,” said Bradley.

“I think not over doing the car is the best, the more simple it is - providing the colours are right - the better the car will ultimately look and you want to be able to read your sponsors from the other side if the track.

“You can inspiration out of anything to gain ideas for your work, and you need to keep trying to be fresh with designs.

“Most times I will do two design drafts wich will range around the $300 - $500 dollar mark, but will do as many design drafts needed until my customer is happy.

“Generally each car will take two to five hours to design and consume somewhere between 10 to 15 metres of vinyl.

“There are different grades of vinyl, we use bodywrap vinyl for it lasts longer and appies better.

“The colours can be anything from full bodied colours to chrome, now experimenting with more matte and shiny finishes, with more options coming out with conformable chromes and different types of metallic.

“Generally customers get a minimum of two spare top wings and two spare front wings, and a spare body. Depending on the size of the team the bigger guy’s will get three or four body’s and five or six top and front’s done, and maybe more throughout the year depending on their luck.

“The starting price for one complete car to be designed an wrapped is $1,800.”

In the modern era of Spintcar racing, the livery of a car has changed dramatically. It is no longer acceptable to just have a plain white car with a few sponsors stickers on it like those seen in the ‘Blast from the Past’ images on pages 24 and 25.

Thursday Thunder News spoke with Craig Bradley of Skwid Signs about what it takes to design and implement a sprintcar livery.

THROUGH PICKO’S LENSPicko’s insight into what his night will be like at Round One of Speedweek

It’s that time of the year that all us Sprintcar tragics wait out all those AFL or NRL games, those long, long winter weekends! It’s Speedweek! The best week in Australian

Speedway. Five nights racing in seven days,sunburn, flies, hundreds of km’s to be driven, some of the best tracks in the country, the race to the top of Mount Max all while we watch the best form of motorsport going around.

Since 2007 I have been lucky enough to have gone from the grandstands and the grass hills, to actually having the best seat in the house, on the infield taking photos of all the action! I used to sit on the hill and cheer home Phil March, Trevor Green and Max, now I take photos of them as they throw these cars around the track. There is nothing like capturing a great shot of a Sprintcar on its back wheels or a side by side shot that you know will make a great cover photo for a magazine. Some of my favourite photos are close up head shots as the drivers sit in their cars warming the engines, helmets on, in their own little world, totally focused on working out the quickest way around the track for time trials.

Better people than I have said it before, but honestly, there is nothing like a 410 Sprintcar being started while you are standing 10 feet away from it! Can you imagine what its like to sit inside one at full noise?

So my night starts at the track at about 3pm, catching up with friends and drivers after the

xmas lunch from yesterday. At drivers briefing at 4:30pm it’s a chance to get some nice head shots, which I’m sure the drivers hate, but we need to get some of your pretty faces without the helmets on. Around 5pm the cars start making their way out onto the track for time trials. Normally at Speedway City I will park myself at the pit gate to get some nice outside shots, something different from the normal shot, getting covered in mud, dodging the flies just to get that one cracking shot of someone lifting the front wheels off the ground, or maybe a roll over in hot laps…Jack Lee!! Haha Sorry!

Now its time for the real racing to start. I normally try to stand in turn one, gives you the chance to get some close wheel to wheel racing shots on the green light, plus there is also a chance for someone to ’take a ride’. Now having

crewed on a Sprintcar team for many years, taking a ride is not something you want to see….however, now that I have a camera!! Once the night gets rolling its suprising how fast the night goes! Two sets of heats, dash, B Main and the A Main, winners celebration, podium shots plus support races means on the night I have taken anywhere from 800-1000 photos. Then it’s time to pack up and head back into the pits for a quick lap around the pits to hear some drivers hard luck stories, and even share a quick soft drink with the winners.

I’ll then jump in the Commodore, crank up the Foo Fighters and start on the 100 km trek back home to Murray Bridge where there is more work to do before I can get some sleep. During Last year’s Speedweek I helped out

the Krikke and Monte teams with photos for their media releases, so I had to look for a couple nice pics to email off to the teams for their media, so they can get them out to their followers and sponsors first thing in the morning. Also I’d have a quick look for any nice shots I want to put away for the magazines. If I’m not to tired I will put together a small album of photos to post to Facebook

for the public to see. My Batteries are now on charge and by 4am its time to get some sleep. The next night is 3 minutes from my back door, so I can have a sleep in, wake up at around 9.30am before giving the camera a clean, re-install the batteries, pack the camera bag and get ready to do it all again! Would we have it any other way?? Hell no, I waited all year for this!!

Sitting here in silence , in shock and in tears on the passing of one of the nicest men I had the privilege to call my friend.

Liam Crane was a rarity among people he always made you feel like you were special . I spent a lot of time travelling Australia with Liam, in fact in the first 24 years of World Series sprintcars Liam attended every single round in the country - something that not even another driver had done.

I used to enjoy it on a Friday night before a Sprintcar race here in Adelaide and Liam and I would go out to dinner usually at the Empire Hotel and sit there for hours talking about racing . He’d be reminiscing how good Garry Brazier is and I would be saying what about Phil March?

For about five or six Christmas’ in a row I would cook Liam a Christmas lunch with the help of a cookbook that a friend had written for me with step by step details down to the nearest minute on what order to do what etc.

Well you could imagine my rush and panic when Liam rocked up 45 minutes before the planned arrival and I still had to finish off the roast potatoes and heat the bread rolls up and set the table . Liam thought it was hilarious that he’d get me in a state of panic.

The state of panic and what to do next eventually ended up on his foot. Later, he invited me up to his house in the blue mountain town of spring wood for a BBQ.

I caught the train from Parramatta and was met by Liam not in his usual Ford Falcon but rather his wife’s little Mazda 121 jelly bean car, Liam said we needed to go to the shops to get some meat for the BBQ and bread etc.

We’ve walked around the supermarket purchased the goods and headed back to Liam’s house. Liam’s unpacked the shopping and I hear a loud expletive . I said what’s wrong . He says we forgot the meat the BBQ is now going to be toasted cheese sandwiches.

I never let Liam forget about his BBQ and the toasted sangers. In the past few years Liam’s health wasn’t the best but he never complained but you could see he was struggling and eventually last season he had to stop attending the races.

I used to speak to Liam at least every week on the phone and only spoke to him a few days prior where he told me he was undertaking more tests. I’m just glad my mate is out of pain now and this year at Christmas in his honour I’m going to re cook that dinner and not got flustered, but I would happily open the door up to let him in early . May he rest in peace, it’s been an absolute pleasure to have called him my friend and I’m going to miss our chats on everything from cricket to south Sydney Rabbitohs league side.
