Apparently, rain isn’talways a good thing.Georgia’s quarter-billion-

dollar pecan industry isexpected to take a hit this sea-son, as the Peach State’specan crop is expected to bedown 20-something percent incomparison to recent years. There are two culprits,

according to Lenny Wells, aUniversity of Georgia profes-sor and pecan expert. Onehas been rain. 2013 has beenone of the rainiest on recordfor many parts of Georgia. The other reason is theunusually cool spring earlierthis year in Georgia.During the last few years,

China has developed a han-kering for pecans. Pecanexports to China have gonethrough the roof during thelast six years, according toWells. China's taste forpecans has caused a pecanboom in Georgia. In 2012,

alone, more than 20,000 newacres were planted inGeorgia. Many pecan farmersin Georgia now only deal withChina and Chinese traders.Wells has a theory, a theory

that revolves around walnutsand walnut futures. Walnutshave long been a staple ofChinese cooking. In 2007,how-ever, walnut prices spiked inChina, and the Chinese beganlooking for cheaper substitute. The answer was pecans.“They started buying up

pecans because they werecheaper than walnuts for theevery first time. In the process, they found out that pecanswerereally tasty,”musedWells.

Aquinas fin-ished with 290 yards passing, with 217 of those coming from

recently made off with rough-ly $10,000 worth of cameraequipment, according to apolice reportwith theBaldwin

County Sheriff’s Office.The equipment belonged

to a production crew from the“Here Comes Honey BooBoo”TV show.A scene for theupcoming season was beingfilmedwhen the incident tookplace. The scene was set at anabandoned convenience storenear the MilledgevilleCountry Club. A member ofthe production crew said thathe left a tripod at the locationand, when he returned, it wasgone, along with several otherpieces of equipment.

Kim Croy says that she’supset.A fire began in the

kitchen of Croy’s home onWaverly Drive in Gordonaround noon Saturday. Alsohome during the time was

Croy’s husband, her youngson, her mother, as well asher mother-in-law. Duringthe fire, Croy’s mother felland suffered a gash to herhead. Croy says that shecalled the Gordon PoliceDepartment and began wait-ing. And waited. And waitedsome more.In the end, Croy says that

an ambulance finallyarrived 45 minutes later, while a fire truck nevershowed up.“I just want people to

know what happened so thiswill never happen again inGordon,” Croy said Tuesday.“It took forever for anyoneto show up.”The incident at Croy’s

home was a hot topic atMonday’s Gordon CityCouncil meeting. MayorKenneth Turner had multi-ple questions for Terry Eady, the chief of the GordonPolice Department, as wellas Police Chief Mike Hall.Eady didn’t have any

immediate answers. For var-ious reasons, Eady said that“he couldn’t get any (of hisvolunteer firefighters) torespond.” Eady said that hewould continue to look intothe situation, adding thatmany of his men “were outof town.”“In the 30 years that I’ve

been here, this is the firsttime that I can rememberthis happening,” he said.“Believe me, I want to knowwhat happened, too.”The Mayor told The Post

that he “is very much con-cerned.”“But,” the mayor said,

“this is the first time sinceI’ve been here that I canremember our volunteerfirefighters not respondingto a fire. We don’t knowexactly what happened, butwe’re certainly going to findout.”Wilkinson County’s fire-

fighters operate with a beep-er/pager system. A page issupposed to be sent out bythe 9-1-1 dispatcher uponreceiving an emergency firecall. For whatever reason, thepage never went out duringSaturday’s fire at the Croyhome. Nor did the page goout to the fire departments inany nearby town. In case thatthe Gordon Fire Departmentcannot respond to a fire, theMcIntyre Fire Departmentand/or Irwinton FireDepartments are supposed tofill the void. Neither of thosefire departments everreceived a page on Saturday, however.“It never went out to our

firefighters, and it neverwent out to McIntyre or

Irwinton, either,” Turnersaid.Part of the confusion pos-

sibly was caused by the factthat Croy didn’t call 911.Instead, she called theGordon Police Departmentdirectly. Croy says that shehas a Milledgeville cellphone number and wasafraid that her 911 callwould be answered byMilledgeville dispatchers. So, Croy called the GordonPolice Department instead.Croy says that she also “is

highly disturbed” by thereaction from the GordonPolice Department. An offi-cer arrived 40 to 45 minutesafter the first 911 call, saysCroy.“The dispatcher was real-

ly rude, too. I asked herwhere the police officer was,and she told me that “ourpolice officers don’t come tofires,’” Croy said.Turner says that any con-

fusion about the GPD’sstructure fire policy hasbeen cleared up.“It’s now crystal clear

that our officers shouldrespond to fires. It’s anemergency, so they shouldbe there,” the mayor said.Croy’s home was spared

by the fire, although itreceived considerablesmoke damage, she said.

facility somewhere in the Southeast.Shinholster last Friday was sentenced to 40months behind bars after pleading guilty toone count of food stamp fraud and one countof money laundering. Shinholster also wasordered to pay $4.68 million in restitution.Voluntary surrender can be given to defen-

dants for several reasons, including age andlack of a prior criminal history.According to a United States Attorney

General press release, Shinolster “illegallyconspired with almost 2,000 food stamp recip-ients to defraud the food stamp program. Aspart of the scheme each food stamp recipientwould provide Mr. Shinholster with an elec-tronic benefits transfer (EBT) card and per-sonal identification number. Mr. Shinholsterwould then run the EBT card through thepoint of sale machine administered by theFood Stamp Program as though the cardhold-er had purchased food when, in fact, the card-holder got cash instead. Mr. Shinholsteradmitted that he knew that an EBT card wasto be used to purchase food only and not to besold for cash. The illegal EBT debit wouldinclude an additional 30 percent of the cashamount as profit for Mr. Shinholster.”“The food stamp program was established for

the noble purpose of providing food for needyfamilies, especially the children of those fami-lies. Not only did Mr. Shinholster defraud theprogram, he damaged it by providing ammuni-tion to those detractors who believe that this

type of government program is rife with fraudand should be eliminated. With every dollarthat Mr. Shinholster took for himself, a needychild in Georgia could have been fed,” saidUnited States Attorney Michael Moore.Shinholster is accused of pocketing roughly

$1.2 million during the five years that he ranthe scheme. Shinholster operatedShinholster’s Grocery Store and Meat Marketon Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Irwintonfor roughly 40 years. For many years,Shinholster reportedly ran an honest andrefutable business. At some point, however, hebegan operating on the wrong side of the law.The basis for the investigation actually

began on the other side of Wilkinson County.Deputies responded to a 911 call inToomsboro in summer 2010. The caller saidthat several small children were walking inthe the road without adult supervision.Deputies responded, corralled the childrenand took them back to their trailer. Onceinside, the deputies discovered a home thatwas in deplorable condition. There were nogroceries in the kitchen, while the children’smother was in a back bedroom shooting upmethamphetamine, according to HeathBache with the sheriff’s office. The womanlater admitted to receiving the money fordrugs at Boyd’s grocery store. Bache said that he and Sheriff Richard

Chatman were motivated by the fact that somany children were indirectly involved in thescam. Bache estimates that “more than 90percent” of the people who were partaking inthe scam had children at home.

An Irwinton man was handcuffed andarrested in the parking lot of a daycarecenter last Friday morning.Roderick Deshon Coverson, 25,

was booked at the county jail andcharged with three counts of saleof marijuana and one count of pos-session of drug related objects. The Ocmulgee Drug Task Force

had been investigating Coversonfor the last two months, accordingto Agent Kelvin Hollingsworth. Theagency has made several buys fromCoverson, added Hollingsworth.

Last Friday, the task force prepared anarrest warrant for Coverson. Holligsworthcalled Coverson and told him that he need-ed to make another purchase. “Instead of telling us to meet him at his

residence, he told us to meet him atthe daycare,” Hollingsworth said. That daycare center was Tiny

Tots in McIntyre. Once there,Coverson was arrested in the park-ing lot.Agents later searched Coverson’s

home and recovered cash and mari-juana, as well as digital scales.“He was dealing a significant

amount of marijuana for a county of thissize,” Hollingsworth said.

Government truck thief arrested

A city of Gordon work truck was stolenfrom the city barn in late July. Now, the Gordon Police Department is

confident that it has its man. Dennis DaleHogan, 59, was arrested Tuesday in con-nection with the incident. Hogan “has anextensive criminal history in this county,”according to Investigator Andy Hester withthe GPD.Hogan had been the primary suspect

from the beginning, according to Hester. The truck was recovered roughly a quarter-mile from Hogan’s house in McIntyre.“He denied, denied, denied,” said

Hester. “Finally, we had him set up for apolygraph test.”At that point, according to Hester,

Hogan called the GPD and confessed.Hogan was kicked out of a friend’s apart-

ment in the Prairie View apartment complexduring the same evening of the incident.“We knew that he was on foot that night,

and we also knew that he has a long histo-ry of stealing,” Hester said. The teale-colored, 1997 Chevrolet F-150

was driven through the fence at the back ofthe city barn property and onto Paper MillRoad. The truck later was recovered out-side of McIntyre, where Hogan lives.“Apparently, he needed a way home, so

he stole the truck,” Hester said.On the same night, the shed behind the

Gordon Texaco was rummaged through.Detectives believe that there’s a connection.“(Hogan) hasn’t admitted to that one,

but it certainly wouldn’t be a surprise ifthat was him, too,” Hester said.
