Texas Instruments offers a complete portfolio of
power interface circuitry. Using the mixed-signal
process technology, the product line offers
designers flexibility in architecture and power
performance for a variety of solutions for their
specific needs.
TIs Power+ ICs are monolithic power DMOS
devices that feature multiple integrated transis-
tors in surface-mount packaging. These devices
may include on-board control logic, ESD
protection, snubber circuitry, diagnostic and
fault detection.
Power+ devices offer superior alternatives to
discrete power MOSFETs and hybrids in many
power switching applications including driving
fractional horsepower motors, solenoids, valves,
relays, LEDs and incandescent lamps/bulbs.

The TPIC0107B and TPIC0108Bare PWM control intelligent H-bridges designed specificallyfor DC motor applications. Thesedevices provide forward, reverse, andbrake modes of operation.
The TPIC010XB are each 5-A fullH-bridge with integrated fault protec-tion and diagnostics including: overand under-voltage, over-current, over-temperature and cross conduction.Fault diagnostics can be obtained bymonitoring the status outputs and thetwo input control lines. Each devicefeatures two input control lines forreduced microcontroller overhead.

Anew addition to the Power+L o g i c f a m i l y, the TPIC6C595,is an 8-bit shift register with100-mA DMOS outputs. The device is
a low-cost, monolithic IC designed
specifically for low-current, medium-
voltage loads such as LEDs.
To prevent the outputs from
over-current damage, the TPIC6C595
has current-limit capability that
decreases as the junction temperature
increases for additional device protec-
tion. The outputs also provide snub-
ber circuitry to protect the device
from inductive flyback. Each pin has
transient protection for increased
robustness making the device suited
for ESD-sensitive applications.

mentioned features in a bipolar

and ULN2003, would require signifi-
cant external circuitry and passive

The TPIC6C595 offers a cost-effec-
tive integrated solution as well as high
reliability for switching LEDs or low-
current incandescent bulbs.
Power+ Logic Portfolio Besides the shift-register control
logic as offered in the 595, the family
also features addressable latch (259)
and D-type latch (273) options. These
devices have various switching current
capability to drive solenoids, incandes-
cent bulbs, LEDs, fractional horsepow-
er motors, relays, and valves in many
automotive or industrial applications.

TPIC43T01 & TPIC1310 First digital control loop
for 3-phase DC brushless motor
The TPIC43T01 provides preci-sion RPM control to a 3-phaseDC brushless motor. This controller is the industrys first to
feature an EEPROM programmable
digital filter providing increased flexi-
bility and minimized design efforts.
The TPIC43T01s outputs are
designed to drive six external discrete
N-channel power FETs or an integrat-
ed driver such as the TPIC1310. As a
chipset, the TPIC43T01 and TPIC1310
offer enhanced functionality and lower
cost making it a very attractive
solution for high performance motor
control applications.
A PC-based Windows compatible
software package is provided allowing
users to input the motor and system
characteristics, optimizing the control
loop response with continuous time
parameters, selecting the required
digital filter coefficients. The software
program outputs the resulting
EEPROM settings to a JEDEC com-
patible file to program the TPIC43T01
through a third party device
programmer.
TPIC43T01The TPIC43T01 provides a variable
reluctance speed sensor interface and
a Hall-effect position interface. The
speed interface receives an external
sinusoidal signal and converts it to a

The Hall-effect sensor receives
low-level differential voltages from
external naked Hall elements and
converts them to digital position refer-
ence signals for the control circuit for
the commutation control. The core of
the control circuit implements a
digital signal processing algorithm
consisting of a digital integrator and
filter. User programmable filter coeffi-
cients set compensation pole and zero
to stabilize the system response.
Programmable parameters are stored
in an internal EEPROM.

TPIC1310The TPIC1310 is a monolithic gate-
protected power DMOS array that
consists of six electrically isolated
N-channel enhancement-mode DMOS
transistors configured as a three-half
H-bridge. When used with the
controller TPIC43T01, the TPIC1310
allows the user the ability to optimize
the current switching capability of the
output stage.

The TPIC44H01, a four-channelhigh-side FET pre-driver, is thefirst pre-driver to provide serialor parallel input interface to control
four external NMOS power FETs. This
solution offers the end user flexibility
to tailor the output stage FETs and
on-resistances to meet a specific load
requirement. The device is designed
for low frequency switching of resis-
tive or inductive loads including incan-
descent bulbs and solenoids.
The TPIC44H01s diagnostic and
fault isolation features support feder-
ally mandated OBD II for automotive
applications and reduces down time
and system costs. Each channel has
independent open-load detection and
over-current and short-to-ground
detection/protection with fault status
reporting via the serial interface. For
increased protection and reliability,
the device has dynamic over-current
threshold ideal for incandescent bulb
applications with long inrush current.
Over-voltage lockout circuitry pro-
vides additional protection for the
device and the external FETs.
The TPIC44H01 has a low-current
sleep state that is suitable for low
power applications. Multiple
TPIC44H01s may be cascaded via the
serial interface to reduce I/O lines
from the host controller.

The low-side power control familyfeatures FET pre-drivers andcompanion power DMOS arrays.In separating the power section from
the control, this architecture allows a
standard pre-driver to interface to var-
ious power switches. This chipset
approach offers added benefits over
integrated solution in allowing design-
ers the flexibility to tailor the output
stage FETs and on-resistances to meet
a specific load requirement. The dual-
chip solution provides a cost-effective
alternative to the traditional single-
chip custom solution, often character-
ized by high risk and long develop-
ment cycle.
The family offers 6-channel
(TPIC46L0X & TPIC2601) and
4-channel (TPIC44L0X and
TPIC2401) solutions for switching
inductive loads such as solenoids,
valves, relays, lamps, and motors.

The TPIC2603 is a monolithic low-side shift-register that featureson-board diagnostics and sixpower DMOS FETs. With its fault
detection and reporting capability, the
TPIC2603 is an excellent choice for
power switching applications where
diagnostics are prevalent. The device
can efficiently identify load problems
for improved fault isolation resulting
in shorter system down time,
smoother operation, and increased

The TPIC2101 is a single-phaselow-side 50-mA FET pre-driverwith PWM output that providesconstant speed control of a unidirec-
tional DC brush motor. The device
compensates for speed variations due
to fluctuations in the supply voltage
by modifying its PWM duty cycle
inversely with changes in the supply
voltage. The device automatically
adjusts the gate drive duty cycle to
the FET to maintain a constant effec-
tive load voltage resulting in constant
speed of the motor.
For automatic speed control, the
TPIC2101 may be interfaced directly
with the system microcontroller.
Manual speed control can be achieved
by the supply with a variable resistor.

The TPIC2101 controller has three
mode of operation: sleep state, run
state, and fault state. The device pro-
vides soft start to the motor to reduce
stress during start up. An
on-board oscillator is provided to
eliminate the need of an external
crystal for additional cost savings.
For increased system reliability, the
TPIC2101 offers over-voltage protec-
tion, under-voltage shutdown, and
current-limit protection.
