4.2.3. Conference presentations

So far I have given 36 presentations in Hungary and 40 presentations abroad (but the

overwhelming majority of the presentations in Hungary were also given at international

conferences). In addition, I have given 15 scholarly presentations on several different occasions

(three of them abroad).

4.2.4. Demonstration of international presence and recognition

The following facts and figures testify to my international presence and recognition.

1. According to the statistics in MTMT, out of my 143 citations in fully scholarly works 67 are

in foreign languages and come from abroad (and these are supplemented with 17 citations in

foreign languages in other works abroad).

2. As I demonstrate in my remarks on my most important publications in a detailed fashion,

several citations from abroad come from sources that count as foundational works (or

textbooks) on LFG.

3. Our Lexical-Functional Grammar Research Group, which I lead, is an active and

acknowledged participant in the international collaboration called Parallel Grammar (so far

we have hosted two ParGram workshops and an LFG conference in Debrecen).

4. I have attended the overwhelming majority of the annual LFG conferences (I also gave a talk

at the Konstanz conference last July), and on several occasions I gave two (or three)

presentations.

5. I have 20 publications in the LFG Proceedings (our on-line refereed journal), and I have

documented 22 citations for them.

6. I have been a member of LFG’s international organization (International Lexical-Functional

Grammar Association) since its foundation in 1997, and I have been its secretary-treasurer

and a member of its Executive Committee since 2014.

4.2.6. Launching a research circle

It can be considered an instance of a research circle launching effort that I founded the Lexical-

Functional Grammar Research Group at the Department of English Linguistics at the University

of Debrecen in 2008, and I have been its leader ever since. The group has successfully completed

two projects (an OTKA (Hungarian Scientific Research Fund) project and a subproject of one of

the university’s TÁMOP (EU) projects). I trained my previous students to become members of

this research group while I was their thesis supervisor at various levels (MA thesis, National

Students’ Extramural Scholarly Research Society Conference thesis, PhD dissertation).

I have been teaching at Kossuth Lajos University and at its legal successor, the University of

Debrecen, since 1984. I have developed and offered the following courses in various

(textbooks, workbooks and computer-assisted teaching programmes) in the Hungarian language

teaching material series Hungarolingua, which is used in more than sixty countries.

I have been involved in the English Linguistics subprogramme of the Linguistics Doctoral School

of the University since 2001. In addition to my teaching and supervising activity, I have been the

Péter Szűcs and István Pálinkás had their preliminary dissertation debates last May and last

In 1998, I was invited to teach two courses at the first (nationwide) Linguistics Supercourse

hosted by the University of Pécs (on Lexical-Functional Grammar and deverbal nominalization in

Hungarian), in groups of 14 and 18.

I was invited to teach two courses at the University of Vienna in the autumn semester of the

2001/2002 academic year (Morphology-Syntax Interface and Lexical-Functional Grammar) in

groups of 5 and 6.
