Save the Date:Updated instant ticket auto settlement policy goes into effect Sunday, April 2The Ohio Lottery has revised its auto-settlement policy to include automatic reconciliation for instant ticket books with 95% of low-tier prizes cashed. Starting April 2, all instant ticket books for $1-$20 instant games will be marked sold when 95% of low-tier prizes from that book are cashed, or 65 days after activation, whichever comes first.

At this time, the Lottery’s $30 instant games will not be subject to 95% low-tier auto settlement. Any book of $30 instant tickets will be settled 65 days after activation, as is current practice.

Have books with 95% of their low-tier prizes sold? Keep selling these books. Mid- and high-tier prizes could still be up for grabs!

Lottery policy requires retailers to “mark sold” any book of activated tickets through the gaming terminal when that book has been sold and is no longer in the retailer’s inventory.

Dealing with draw time confusion: Tips from a Lottery counter workerBy Kate Weckerly, Communications Intern

The time is 7:18 p.m. There are six people in line to play their Pick 3 numbers before the evening drawing closes in just minutes. A customer approaches the counter, hands you a stack of tickets and says, “Play them again, exactly as they are.”

So you do, and when you hand the tickets back, he says “No, I wanted them for the evening drawing.”

You look at the tickets that all say “Midday” and begin cancelling them as quickly as possible while angry customers leave the line, knowing they aren’t going to get their numbers in on time.

So, what could you have done differently? I know that you listened to what the customer said, but sometimes that just doesn’t work.

Here are some tips to help avoid this confusion:


Clarify. Ask your customers for which drawing they are playing their tickets. Then ask them again. Make sure you know exactly what your customers want before you print the ticket. This prevents a lot of ticket cancellations that always lead to long lines before pool closing times.

Watch out for the Next Draw Box on the screen. If a customer says “play my tickets exactly as they are,” make sure the tickets you are holding match what the screen says. Often, players hand you “Evening” tickets before the "Midday" drawing and want them to be played for "Evening".

However, when you scan the tickets to be played “exactly as they are,” the box titled "Next Draw" is selected on the screen.

In this instance, ask the customer if they want the new tickets for the next drawing or for the drawing shown on the tickets that they instructed you to play again. Then select the corresponding drawing on the screen.

Use Plays Preview when handling a large ticket order.This feature allows you to scan all the tickets to be played before printing them. Then, when a customer changes his or her mind about a ticket, you can edit the play, delete the play, or add another play, which keeps the number of ticket cancellations down.

This feature also shows you a balance of all the tickets played, so that you may collect payment while the tickets are printing, and help another customer, especially if the line is long and a drawing is about to close.

But beware! The Plays Preview screen only shows you the balance of the tickets played within that feature. If you played a ticket for the same customer before using Plays Preview, the cost of that ticket will not be reflected in the balance shown in Plays Preview.

Asking customers exactly what they want is the best way to prevent confusion. Of course, never hesitate to contact your Lottery sales representative if you have any questions or issues.

E. Rolling Cash 5 winner • Dec. 31, 2016 Mike Arnold of Batavia says his mom always told

him that when you do good, you will be blessed. He had the good fortune to win $145,014 in the Dec. 31 Rolling Cash 5 drawing. He has been taking care of his grandmother, who turns 97 in June. Recently, he lost his mother, but says she is smiling down on him. He bought his winning ticket at Boar’s Head Bait & Carryout. His blessing is two-fold; as the store owner, he receives a $500 sales bonus.

bills and get some needed car repairs with the $25,208.50 she won playing Pick 5.

One of the first things you notice about Shaileshk Shah, known as “Shaw” to his Lottery customers and friends, and his wife Amita, is their graciousness and warmth. You can see why his customers have great affection for them and enjoy coming to Quick Mart, a successful Mansfield-area convenience store. They have loyal, regular customers, some of whom walk to the store from their nearby homes.

He purchased the business in 2003, receiving a friend’s guidance to get Quick Mart off to a good start. Shaw attributes his success to taking care of customers, creating an environment where his customers want to come back.

“There’s nothing better than a smile,” he says.

“It was something I needed to do to help out our family and our two little girls,” he continues. He’s proud of their success and ability to help his daughters, now in college, thrive. His wife Amita works midday at the store. He also has the help of three employees.

Quick Mart is a big “Numbers” game retailer, with almost a third of his store’s Lottery sales coming from Pick 3. Add in Pick 4 and Pick 5, and Numbers games make up about 46% of overall game sales. Instant games are the store’s next biggest sellers.

As a Numbers retailer, he knows the importance of being quick and accurate on the Lottery terminal. To reduce errors, he uses

the Lottery terminal’s “plays preview” option to confirm transactions before they’re finalized. He offers a number of suggestions to make accounting for Numbers game transactions easier.

Then, there are his store’s instant ticket customers. They tend to like $5 and $10 games, with even higher priced games like 40th Anniversary Millions and Break the Bank among the most popular.

He likes to think of the store as a “one stop shop” for customers, and rewards customers for their loyalty with perks now and again with a free cup of coffee or snack.

He also knows the attraction of having customers win, and encourages the Lottery to look at adding more, smaller winners too. A win of any kind, he says, makes people feel good.

“Take care of customers; be friendly, be fair, be honest (and) keep smiling,” he says.

Keys to Success• Using the “Plays Preview” feature on the Lottery terminal. Shaw, his

wife Amita, and their staff use the terminal “plays preview” feature to help account for and review wagers with his customers. It’s an especially good feature for retailers whose customers are experienced Numbers game players or frequently make multiple draw game wagers. See Taking Care of Business on pages 6-7 to learn more.

• Cashing tickets. Shaw works to make cashing convenient for all his customers. He has a cash to sales ratio of approximately 58%.

• Offering perks. From time to time, Shaw rewards loyal customers with a free coffee or another small treat.
