!CUTTING REQUIREMENTS From a variety the heart fabrics, cut: (74) 2-1/2” squares for the scrappy borderFrom the inner and outer border, cut:(8) 2-1/2” strips. Crosscut into:(2) 2-1/2” x 32-1/2” for the inner side borders (2) 2-1/2” x 34-1/2” for the inner top & bottom borders(2) 2-1/2” x 40-1/2” for the outer side borders (2) 2-1/2” x 42-1/2” for the outer top & bottom borders

PIECING1. Begin by stacking the 23 fat quarters, in a pile,

right sides up, aligning the selvage edge and the left side of each piece. Every four fabrics will be together in the same block. Please refer to the section, “About Stacking”. Separate the stack into two piles for cutting then combine back into one stack of 23 after cutting.

2. Trace the heart pattern twice, once for each stackof fat quarters, onto the unwaxed side of a pieceof freezer paper. Be sure to label each piece.Iron a freezer paper pattern onto the stack offabric.

NOTE: Sections E and F have an additional, seemingly unnecessary cut lines to separate into pieces 1 and 2. This provides additional flexibility for the pattern if you want to select a four-color color way and make the backgrounds scrappy. !3. Cut the rectangle out of the stack, cutting

through the freezer paper and the entire stack offabric. Cut the rectangle apart into sections Athrough G, saying your alphabet backwards andcounting backwards to determine the cuttingorder until all the individual pieces have beenseparated. As you cut out each piece, stack thepiles on your master to help you stay organized!Cut the bottom eleven fabrics first, stack them onthe master, then cut the top 10 fabrics and stackthem on top of the bottom eleven fabrics.!

4. Shuffle the stack so that each element will be adifferent fabric. Remove all the freezer paper.A. For the outer heart, pieces A1, A8, A9, B2,

and C, put the top fabric on the bottom ofeach of these piles.

B. For middle heart, pieces A2, A3, A6, andA7, put the top two fabrics on the bottom ofeach pile.

C. For the center heart, pieces A4 and A5, putthe top three fabrics on the bottom of eachpile.

D. The background pieces B1, D, E1, E2, F1,F2, and G, stay the same.!

5. Stitch the block back together in four sections,then join the sections and square the blocks tothe size indicated. Please read the section“General Craziness” before you begin.

Remember: just follow the dots!

A. Section A: Stitch piece 1 to piece 2, keeping the edge of the seam adjacent to piece 3 straight. Add piece 3 keeping the edge of the seam adjacent to piece 4 straight. Add piece 4 keeping the edge of the seam adjacent to piece 5 straight. Add piece 5 keeping the edge of the seam adjacent to piece 6 straight. Add pieces 6-9 in consecutive order, centering each piece and stitching.

B. Section B: Center piece 2 on piece 1 and stitch.

C. Sections E & F: Stitch piece 1 to piece 2 keeping the inside edge of the seam adjacent to section A straight.

!D. Stitch section A to section B keeping the

edge of the seam adjacent to section C straight.

E. Center section/piece C on section AB and stitch.

F. Add section D to section ABC keeping the edge of the seam adjacent to section E straight.

G. Center section E on section ABCD and stitch.

H. Center section F on section A-E and stitch. I. Center section G on section A-F and stitch. J. Repeat steps A- I and make (21) heart

blocks. !6. Square the heart blocks to: 6-1/2” x 8-1/2”.!7. Stitch the blocks together in four rows of five

blocks each. Press the seams of alternate rowsin opposite directions. Join the rows.!

8. Add the inner borders, first to the sides, thento the top and bottom of the quilts.!

1. For each to the scrappy side borders, stitch (18)2-1/2” squares together (Length=36-1/2”). Foreach of the scrappy top and bottom borders,stitch (19) squares together (Length=38-1/2”).Stitch the scrappy borders first to the sides, thento the top and bottom of the quilt.!

9. Add the outer borders, first to the sides, thento the top and bottom of the quilts.!

10. Quilt, bind, and enjoy!

Don’t forget to straighten seams before stitching one section to another. Only straighten the edges of the seam you are sewing.
