Millions of dollars are spent yearly in plastics research to find new and improved plastics and to find ways to lower the cost of producing plas-tics. TIDBITS GETS FIRED UP ABOUT

NATIONAL BOSS DAYby Stanley Drummond

Bosses are people, too. (Really!) And every year on October 16, America pays tribute to them.• Actually, National Boss Day was created in

1958 by an Illinois secretary named Patricia Haroski. She chose October 16 because it was her father’s birthday. Her father also happened to be her boss at the time. Nevertheless, she felt that bosses in general were underappreciated, and registered the date with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce as an official observance.

• Interestingly enough, a 2005 survey done by an international human resources consulting firm revealed that the majority of employees would not trade places with their boss. The primary reason given was the change that would result between them and their co-workers. They could no longer ignore or laugh at any slackers in their department; they’d be responsible for any poor performers.

• Hallmark started selling Boss Day cards in 1979. While they don’t reveal actual sales figures, they do disclose that the “holiday” is poised to break into the list of top 10 card-send-ing events within the next few years.

Because plastic doesn’t react chemically with most other substances, it doesn’t decay. Plastic stays in the environment for centuries, so recycling is the best method of disposal. However, new technologies are being developed to make plastic from biological substances called Bioplastics. Soy protein, vegetable oil and bacterial polyesters can be extracted from crops and bacteria. Bioplastics made from these biopolymers are better for the environment. They’re produced from renewable resources rather than nonrenewable resources (oil, natural gas). And, they are biodegradable, meaning they can break down in the environment instead of overfilling our landfills.

“The packaging for a microwavable ‘microwave’ dinner is programmed for a shelf life of maybe six months, a cook time of two minutes and a landfill dead-time of centuries.” David Wann, Buzzworm, November 1990

The advancement of the plastics industry got it’s boost during WWII when rubber became scarce, and the shortage threatened war production. The U.S. government asked companies to invent a synthetic rubber that had similar properties and could be made with non-restricted ingredients. Company chemists got to work and produced many synthetic products used during the war. After the war, companies found ways to use the surpluses of these chemicals to make products marketed for the general public.

An 8-year-old living with his 82-year-old grandma made her a cup of coffee one morning. She took one drink and died instantly. He called 911. After paramedics examined grandma, they found a little plastic green soldier in her throat. When questioned, the kid replied, “Grandma always said, ‘The best part of waking up is soldiers in your cup’!”

Did you know that every ton of plastic bottles recycled saves about 3.8 barrels of oil? The plastics industry trade association created a resin numbering system in 1988 used to identify like plastics for recycling.

PLASTICS (continued)• One big drawback was the flammable nature of

celluloid; the balls had a tendency to explode on contact. The plastic was used as a substitute for amber and tortoiseshell and was later used for film in photography and movies.

• 1907: Formaldehyde greatly advanced the technology of plastic. New York chemist Leo Hendrik Baekeland improved phenol-formaldehyde reaction techniques creating the first completely synthetic, man-made plastic trade-named Bakelite. The mixture was highly heat-resistant and extremely hard and could be added to most materials (even softwood) to make them more durable. In the ‘20s and ‘30s, manufacturers made Bakelite jewelry and clock and radio cases that were uniquely styled. Bakelite became a commercial success.

• 1920: Polyvinyl Chloride, or PVC, was developed to replace increasingly costly natural rubber. Approximately 75 percent of all PVC manufactured today is used in construction materials, as well as upholstery, clothing, piping, flexible hoses, tubing, flooring, roofing membranes, shower curtains and electrical cable insulation. PVC is useful because it resists fire and water.

• 1933: Polyethylene was discovered by accident by two chemists in Northwich, England. It proved to have excellent insulating properties and was used during World War II to insulate radar systems for airplanes. Today, polyethylene makes up the largest volume of plastic in the world with an annual production of approximately 80 million metric tons. It’s cheap, flexible, durable and chemically resistant. It is used in soda bottles, milk jugs, plastic bags and food storage containers.

PLASTICS (continued)• 1933: Polyvinylidene Chloride was discovered at

Dow Chemical. PVDC was found to be resistant to oxygen, water, acids, bases and solvents and creates a barrier against oxygen, moisture, chemicals and heat. It was originally used to protect military equipment. The substance was sprayed on fighter planes to protect them against saltwater. After Dow discovered PVDC would cling to almost any surface, Saran Wrap was introduced to the public in 1953.

• 1937: Polyurethane was first developed as a replacement for rubber at the beginning of WWII. This organic polymer was invented by Friedrich Bayer of Germany. It is now used for mattresses, furniture padding and thermal insulation. It is also used for sports wear fabrics such as “lycra.”

• 1938: A chemist working for DuPont named Roy Plunkett discovered Teflon. Plunkett pumped Freon gas into a cylinder left in cold storage overnight. The gas dissipated, leaving a slippery, solid white powder. He found this powder to be impervious to acids, cold and heat. It was ideal for use in the lining of pots and pans to make them stick-free and is widely used in kitchenware today.

• 1939: The first nylon stockings were introduced by DuPont labs at the New York World’s Fair in 1939-1940. During the 1940s, cheap synthetic polymers, such as nylon, acrylic, neoprene and polyethylene, began to replace the use of natural materials in many things. One example is nylon replacing animal hairs in toothbrushes.

• 1948: ABS, or Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene, was first discovered during World War II as an alternative to rubber. ABS was patented in 1948 and introduced to commercial markets in 1954. It is a tough, light-weight plastic, resistant to heat and has the ability to be injection molded and extruded, which makes it useful in the manufacture of many different products like piping, musical instruments, golf club heads, car parts and some toys, including Legos.

4th Quarter 2011Week 42

PLASTICS (continued) Even some tattoo inks use particles of ABS

ground down to less than a micrometer in diameter to make the colors more vivid.

• 1953: Chemist Dr. Daniel Fox of GE became one of the discoverers of the polycarbonate resin that was patented as Lexan. He found that once the gooey substance hardened, it could not be broken or destroyed without great effort. In 1968, the company began using sheets of Lexan in bus and train windows and to make bullet-resistant laminates. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin wore pressure helmets made of Lexan as they took the first steps on the moon. The material is also used in football helmets, traffic signal housing units, car headlights, fighter jet windshields, car dashboards, laptop housings, CDs, DVDs and cell phones.

• 1954: Polystyrene foam, more commonly known as Styrofoam, was discovered in 1839. Dow Chemical introduced Styrofoam to the public in 1954. The material is used for packaging, as a building material and in toys and other household items.

• 1965: DuPont scientist Stephanie Kwolek developed a way to spin fiber from liquid crystalline solutions. The resulting material was lightweight, flexible and five times as strong ounce for ounce as steel. This later became known as Kevlar and is used to make various military and police protection products including flak jackets, bulletproof vests and other protective wear.

• 1979: Polar fleece is a soft, napped insulating synthetic fabric made from Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) and other synthetic fibers. Polar Fleece was first created in 1979 by Malden Mills, now Polartec LLC. The goal was to develop a new, light, yet strong, pile fabric that could mimic, and in some ways surpass, wool. Fleece has some of wool’s finest qualities but weighs a fraction in comparison, is more lightweight than other polyester fabrics and doesn’t hold moisture.

Mystery Shopping and Other Scams

"Mystery shopper opportunities" are making a resurgence in email boxes.Yes, there are legitimate companies. If you've been working for one for a long time and are happy with them, feel free to continue. But if you want to get started now, don't. Wading through the myriad offers and trying to decide which are on the level is asking for trouble. When you sign up, you're likely to be asked for your name, address, email address and bank account information for "instant" receipt of your pay via wire transfer. That's too much information for a company you don't know. You also may be asked to pay a fee to sign up, or for "certification."Barring that, chances are that the only "shopping" you'll

be asked to do will involve receiving checks in the mail with instructions to take out your fee and send them the balance of the money by MoneyGram. The check will end up being no good, and you'll be out the

money you wired to them. If someone offers to pay a ridiculous amount of money to a stranger for a minimal amount of work, think "scam."One inventive scam involves offers to pay people to put advertising signs on their cars and drive around. Amounts offered are up to $1,000 in advance and then $500 per week to drive around with a vinyl sign stuck to your car. You don't have to answer any questions, such as about the number of miles you drive or where you drive. A legitimate advertiser would want to know where his ads would be seen. Your payment will be in the form of a check, which you are instructed to cash, take out your fee, and send the balance by Western Union back to the company.Do you see a pattern here?Another scam can reach

us right where we live: our homes. Home security systems are designed to make us feel safer. The Federal Trade Commission has investigated numerous complaints involving high-pressure sales tactics, shoddy merchandise and more. The warning signs: Someone (likely part of a roving team) comes to your door, impersonating a representative of the monitoring company you already use. You're told your old system is deficient in some way, and that the new equipment itself is free if you'll just sign a contract. For more details on how to protect yourself, check the FTC site at ftc.gov.

Is it really better to use plastic bags instead of paper at grocery stores? Not really. The monetary cost may be less, but the environment suffers when so many plastic bags get loose. Most of us have seen plastic bags flying in the wind, ending up on fences or in trees, littering otherwise attractive natural surroundings. One alternative is to use cloth bags.

People from all over the world visit the Dead Sea for its spas. There are many claims touting the benefits of the region’s solar radiation and climatic conditions, oxygen-enriched atmosphere, mineral-rich salty water, thermo-mineral springs and a therapeutic black mud. Supposedly the Queen of Sheba was the first to believe that the Dead Sea had healing powers, and Cleopatra had the world’s first spa built there.

Some scientists working on an island in the Pacific were chatting when one wondered aloud: “Our supplies should be arriving shortly. Why is it that if you transport something by car, it’s called a shipment, but when it is transported by ship, it’s called cargo? Doesn’t that seem a little backwards?”

A Chilean flamingo named “Pink Floyd” wintered at the Great Salt Lake in Utah after escaping from Tracy Aviary in Salt Lake City in 1987. He (gen-der uncertain) continued to live in the wild, surviving on brine shrimp. Floyd was last seen in 2005 in Idaho.

OVERCOMING THE ODDS:

PETRA NEMCOVATriggered by an immense 9.0 earthquake under the Indian Ocean near the west coast of the Indo-nesian island Sumatra, the tsunami of 2004 left millions of people homeless and 283,000 dead in 11 countries. Despite the massive losses, we can find inspiration in the stories of those who survived, people like Petra Nemcova.• The amount of energy released when the earth’s

crust collided in this event was comparable to 23,000 Hiroshima-type atomic bombs, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. This energy displaced an enormous amount of water, sending powerful shock waves in every direction. These shock waves created the killer waves that slammed into the coastlines of 11 countries in the Indian Ocean.

• Some of these waves traveled as far as 3,000 miles (nearly 5,000 km) and reached heights of 50 feet (15 m). But most of the coastlines were hit with a rapid surge of the ocean followed by a rapid retreat of the water back out to sea. These areas were ravaged by not just one wave, but a series of waves.

• One of the many tsunami survivors was supermodel Petra Nemcova. Nemcova and her boyfriend, photographer Simon Atlee, were vacationing at the Thai resort of Khao Luk. Nemcova loves Thailand and wanted to share the experience of the country with Atlee, so she planned the surprise trip for the two of them. It was the morning of December 26, the last day of their holiday. They were in their bungalow packing for the flight home later that day when Nemcova caught a glimpse out the window of people screaming and running away from something.

PETRA NEMCOVA (continued)

• “I looked out to see what was happening and then the water came in,” recalls Nemcova. Leaving the couple no time to react, a 10-meter wave broke through the bungalow windows, ripping the building apart and sweeping Nemcova and Atlee along with it.

• Nemcova, looking for something to hold on to, saw a rooftop within reach. She called to Atlee, “catch the roof.” She managed to grab hold, but didn’t see if he made it or not as the force of the water sucked her under. The pressure of the water and debris pinned her legs against the building and broke her pelvis in four places. As the wave subsided, the debris released her and in that moment she thought to try and climb on the roof when the next wave hit and pulled her under water again. As she surfaced, she caught hold of a palm tree branch and held on for her life. Eight hours passed before she was rescued. She sustained internal injuries in addition to her broken pelvis. Atlee’s body was later found and identified.

• Nemcova’s life was changed forever. “It’s amazing how such a tragic experience can teach you so much,” she says. Her experience led her to create an organization called the Happy Hearts Fund that helps rebuild schools in disaster zones.

• The organization has rebuilt 50 schools since 2006 in nine countries. “It’s important to establish sustained response to disasters. There is generous first response but that help goes away,” says Nemcova. “Schools are important because if children aren’t able to go to school, that doesn’t allow for healing and growth.”

• On Oct. 29, 1618, Sir Walter Raleigh, English adventurer and favorite courtier of Queen Elizabeth I, is beheaded in London, under a sentence brought against him 15 years earlier. He had been released to establish a gold mine in South America.

• On Oct. 27, 1873, an Illinois farmer named Joseph Glidden submits an application to the U.S. Patent Office for his design for a fencing wire with sharp barbs. Glidden's two-strand barb

wire design changed the face of the American West.

• On Oct. 28, 1886, President Grover Cleveland dedicates The Statue of Liberty, a gift of friendship from the people of France to the people of the United States, in New York Harbor. Originally known as "Liberty Enlightening the World," the statue was to commemorate the Franco-American alliance during the American Revolution.

• On Oct. 24, 1901, a 63-year-old schoolteacher named Annie Edson Taylor becomes the first person to take the plunge over Niagara Falls in a barrel. Taylor reached the shore alive, if a bit battered, 20 minutes after her journey began.

• On Oct. 30, 1938, Orson Welles causes a nationwide panic with his broadcast of "War of the Worlds" -- a realistic radio dramatization of a Martian invasion of Earth. The radio hoax

included an announcement of a large meteor crash in New Jersey and the annihilation of 7,000 National Guardsmen.

• On Oct. 25, 1944, during the Battle of the Leyte Gulf, the Japanese deploy kamikaze suicide bombers against U.S. warships for the first time. More than 1,321 Japanese pilots crash-dived their planes into Allied warships during World War II.

• On Oct. 26, 1986, Red Sox first baseman Bill Buckner lets an easy ground ball dribble between his legs and roll down the right-field line during the 10th inning of the sixth game of the World Series. The game was tied and, thanks to BucknerÕs error, the runner on third had time to score, winning the game for the Mets and forcing a tiebreaking seventh game -- which, in the final innings, the Mets also won.

A Tribute To Sports-men And Women

By Tresa Erickson

Conservation efforts have increased dramatically since the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt. An avid sportsman, Roosevelt worked hard to protect the natural resources he so loved. Assisting him in the effort were thousands of fellow sportsmen and wom-en. Together, they pushed for laws protecting public lands, waters and wildlife, requiring fishing and hunt-ing licenses, and funding state conservation agencies through taxation of gear. As a result, hundreds of thou-sands of species were saved from extinction, including antelope, elk, white-tailed

deer, wild turkeys and wood ducks. While Roos-evelt was rec-ognized for his efforts, most sports-men and women were not. They de-served public recognition, too.

Acutely aware of the prob-lem, Pennsylvania gun shop owner Ira Joffe suggested the creation of a day to thank sportsmen and wom-en for their conservation efforts. Governor Raymond Shafer supported the idea and established Outdoor Sportsman’s Day in the state in 1970.

The idea for a national day gained momentum with support from the National Shooting Sports Founda-tion, and just a year later, Congress got into the act. Senator Thomas McIntyre from New Hampshire and Representative Bob Sikes from Florida each pre-sented a bill calling for the establishment of National

Hunting and Fishing Day on the fourth Saturday of September. The bills were well received and passed in both houses. President Richard Nixon signed the first proc-lamation of the day on May 2, 1972.

From there, the celebra-tion of National Hunting and Fishing Day took off. Every state governor and many city mayors jumped onboard, work-ing diligently to pro-mote the day. National, regional, state and lo-cal organizations re-sponded with hundreds of hunting and fishing events.

The celebration of Na-tional Hunting and Fishing Day continues to this day. Each year, prominent figures from politicians to athletes to entertainers serve as chair of the day. Count-less events are held ev-erywhere in honor of the conservation efforts of sportsmen and wom-en. These serve to raise awareness of the cause and give others a chance to see how fun hunting and fishing can be.

10 REASONSWhy Isagenix® is Your Anti-Aging Solution1. SLOW AGING FROM THE INSIDE OUTIsagenix Nutritional Cleansing and Replenishing™ products help eliminate harmful toxins and impurities from the body that can accelerate the aging process. These products also replenish the body with crucial nutrients for optimal health. The Rejuvity and other anti-aging products also address the need for optimal cellular nutrition that ultimately creates a new level of wellness, vitality, and youthful appearance from the inside out.

2. ADDRESS AGING ON ALL FRONTS-NOT JUST SKINThe skin is largely an indication of how the body is aging. If the body has been abused, neglected and malnourished, then the skin will reflect this. However, if the body’s cells, tissues and organs are protected from harmful pollutants and replenished with crucial nutrients, the skin will reflect this level of health by appearing vibrant, glowing and youthful.

3. NO HARSH CHEMICALS OR IRRITANTSThe anti-aging products in the Rejuvity and IsaDermix® lines do not use any harsh, irritating chemicals or compounds, including phthalates or parabens. Other common products that include harsh compounds often require downtime and may damage the skin further.

4. PROMOTE SKIN’S NATURAL PROCESSESAgeless Renewal Serum and other anti-aging skin products help minimize the appearance of deep wrinkles, support collagen production, improve elasticity and tone, and increase firmness by helping the skin remember what it has forgotten as we age.

5. BOOST ENERGY, VITALITY, AND OVERALL HEALTHIn addition to the superior skin care, Rejuvity and other Isagenix Nutritional Cleansing and Replenishing products slow biological aging of the entire body, leading to enhanced energy and a new level of vitality and improved overall wellness.6. SUPPORTED BY SCIENCEAll of the ingredients in Rejuvity and the other Isagenix anti-aging and replenishing products are supported by scientific research. In addition, many of the company’s own products - including Ageless Renewal Serum - have been specifically investigated in scientific trials with extremely positive results. A recent trial on Ageless Renewal Serum showed a 92% increase in the overall improvement of the skin, and the CoQ10 used in Ageless Actives has been shown to be 800% more absorbable than standard powder forms used in other products.

7. SUPERIOR QUALITYIsagenix prides itself in using only the highest quality ingredients. With Rejuvity and other anti-aging product lines, this commitment to quality continues.8.
