Neatest TIDBITS® LOOKS AT MORE NOTABLE WOMEN by Kathy Wolfe Politicians, entrepreneurs, athletes, performers and philanthropists — Women have made their mark in every walk of life. This week, Tidbits takes a closer look at some of the more notable ones. • Before she was Coco, she was Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, born in France in 1883. She opened a millinery shop in Paris in 1912 after a four-year career as a café singer. In 1922, she introduced a perfume, simply named Chanel No. 5, named such because a fortune teller had told her five was her lucky number. In 1926, she introduced the “little black dress” and was known for saying, “Fashion fades; only style remains the same.” • Although women were not given the right to vote until the Nineteenth Amendment was ratified in 1920, women in the state of Montana had that right before ratification. In fact, Montana had already elected the U.S. Congress’ first woman, Jeannette Rankin, in 1916. She is remembered as the only vote against entering World War II following the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. She had also voted against the U.S. entry into World War I. She continued her anti-war stance for years to come, and in 1968, she led a demonstration march in Washington, D.C., protesting U.S. military action in Vietnam. turn the page for more! Q. TIDBITS GETS FIRED UP ABOUT

NATIONAL BOSS DAYby Stanley Drummond

Bosses are people, too. (Really!) And every year on October 16, America pays tribute to them.• Actually, National Boss Day was created in

1958 by an Illinois secretary named Patricia Haroski. She chose October 16 because it was her father’s birthday. Her father also happened to be her boss at the time. Nevertheless, she felt that bosses in general were underappreciated, and registered the date with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce as an official observance.

• Interestingly enough, a 2005 survey done by an international human resources consulting firm revealed that the majority of employees would not trade places with their boss. The primary reason given was the change that would result between them and their co-workers. They could no longer ignore or laugh at any slackers in their department; they’d be responsible for any poor performers.

• Hallmark started selling Boss Day cards in 1979. While they don’t reveal actual sales figures, they do disclose that the “holiday” is poised to break into the list of top 10 card-send-ing events within the next few years.

When doing all of your holiday cooking, look over your list and try to cook an oven full of baked goods at once. Check the cooking times and temperatures. If you have a pie that cooks for 15 minutes at 400 degrees and then for 45 minutes at 350 degrees and a second pie that bakes for one hour at 350 degrees, then time it so that your second pie goes in when you change the temperature for the first one. It makes better sense to use your heat energy wisely.

Last-Minute Steps to Reduce Taxes

There is still time to do the year-end math and see if you can reduce the amount of income taxes you'll pay. Here are steps you can take:--Invest in computer tax software now, before the end of the year, and run your estimated numbers to see what they look like.--Add up your medical bills for the year. If you can deduct them on the Schedule A tax form, schedule last-minute dental and medical procedures before the end of the year.--Make a 13th payment on your mortgage to increase the Form 1098 interest amount the mortgage company will send you. Every little bit helps.--Make your donations

to Goodwill and Salvation Army before the end of the year. Be sure to get a dated receipt with all of your items listed. Use "It's Deductible" tax software to calculate the value of your donations. Beware noting all of your items

as being in excellent condition. "Average" will still get you some amount of donation value without raising any red flags.--If you were out of work and looked for employment, add up your expenses for the job hunt. You can take mileage, clothing for the interview, costs of preparing and copying your resume if you were seeking employment in the same field. The catch is that you can't wait a long time to see employment if you want to claim the benefits of the job-hunt deductions. See IRS publication 529 for more information. Remember that you'll be required to pay taxes on any unemployment benefits you received on any amount more than $2,400.--If you are self-employed, use holiday sales to purchase big-ticket items you'll need

next year, such as updated telephones, computer, printer, office furniture and supplies.--If you'll need a new appliance soon, consider getting it before the end of the year to take advantage of the tax credit for buying energy-efficient models. See www.energystar.gov. The same applies to any fast remodeling projects such as energy efficient storm doors and windows that can be done before the end of the year. --Put as much money as you can, up to the limit, in an IRA. Get expert financial advice and consider making that a Roth IRA.

While most sightings seem tobeinMexicoandLatinAmerica, therehavebeen reports as far north as Maine.
