Turners,

For those of you who missed the last meeting, Sam Warren has resigned from the office of Treasurer, and Bruce Burkett will be assuming the office until the next elections this fall.  Special thanks go out to Sam for all the great work he did and to Bruce for taking over.

With all of the bowls donated at the last few meetings plus what has been left at Woodcraft for last minute pick-up, it looks like the Tidewater Turners will be turning about 90 (give or take

a few) bowls to the Empty Bowls Charity.

Thanks to everyone who turned and donated bowls for this very worthy event.  At the last Board of Directors meeting it was suggested that a bowl turning demonstration be scheduled for the fall.  This will be followed by a members’ challenge competition for the January or February meeting with all of the bowls being donated to next year’s Empty Bowls event.

We will begin this year’s demonstration schedule at the Spring Arts and Crafts Marketplace at the Virginia Beach Convention Center on

March 22-24.  This is a good opportunity for new turners to get in front of the public and at the same time get some hands-on mentoring from more experienced turners if you want.  You don’t have to be a great turner to demonstrate; you just have to be willing.

Ray Kallman has sent out an email calling for volunteers so give it a try.  You’ll have a blast.

 Keep turning and be safe!!!

Turning Tip Beware of repetitive

stress injuries. Gripping tools and standing locked in places for

hours on end can lead to carpal tunnel injuries, shoulder injuries, and

lower back trauma. Step away from the lathe for about ten minutes every

hour or so. Flex your hands, rotate your

shoulders, twist your torso, take a short walk to restore circulation in

your extremities. Reprint from Capital Area

Cliff:   — Welcomed Bruce Burkett, the club’s new treasurer.

— Discussed Avelino Samuels classes and demonstration in August.  He will teach a class on spiraled vessels on Aug 12, 13 and 14 for 6 students. Avelino will also demonstrate during the evening of Aug 13.  The class will cost $300 plus $25 for materials.  We’ll announce sign ups at a later date.

— Reported that our empty bowls effort is on track.  We have 70+ bowls and will pick up more bowls at Woodcraft on March 11.  This is the best looking collection of bowls to date.  We’ve also sold 10 tickets for Empty Bowls dinner.

Bret:  (No agenda items)

Connie:

— Reported that arrangements have been made for the Spring Craft Show in Virginia Beach.  Our booth will be located along the back wall in the same location as last year.  Setup will be on Thursday from 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm.  The show will run from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm each day and 10:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Sunday.

— Said that she will contact Sue and Myron about holding the club picnic at their house again this year.

— Will identify those members who have not paid their dues so they can be removed from the membership rolls.

Bruce:

— Provided an initial report on the treasury.  He is still identifying some

disbursements and expects to have a complete report in April.

— Recommended that we adopt a “tickets for tops” program that will provide a raffle ticket for each 5 tops contributed at a meeting.  The tops will be handed out to kids at our public demonstration.  Everyone agreed to this program.  Tops can be turned into Connie who will give out tickets.  (Each top must be no smaller than 2 inches in diameter.)

Ray: — Reported that the club video with the safety segment was forwarded to all the Virginia clubs and he had received favorable responses.  The newsletter editor from the Apple Valley Woodturners was impressed with our Youtube channel.

Board Minutes

On March 7, 2019, the Tidewater Turners Board of Directors and Officers held their monthly meeting at Pop’s Diner in Chesapeake. Here is a summary of the meeting. Ray Kallman Board Chairman

3

Members are encouraged to attend these meetings. Should you wish to address the Board please send in writing, a brief summary to Ray ([email protected]) at least 3 days prior to the meeting so as to be included in the agenda.

Ray (continued) — Handed out updated planning calendars.

— Discussed the member challenge and Bret is trying to get it on track.  Pete will assist.

We will attempt to have topics that are appropriate to events in the club.   We will plan appropriate meeting demonstrations in advance to the challenges to assist members.

— Asked Connie about a second member show this year.  It is scheduled for the fall.

— Provided an update on 2019 public demonstrations.  We have Virginia Beach Craft Fair, Francis Land House Gathering of the Guilds, CASA Pinwheel Palooza and the Yorktown Art at the River festival planned.   He has added the Portsmouth MakerFaire and the Suffolk Driver Days to the schedule.

Steve:  (Not present at the board meeting.  Ray presented his agenda items.)

— Noted that he needed inputs for the newsletter.

— Updated our section of the AAW website and added Bruce as treasurer.

— Suggested we adapt the same snow policy used by the Capitol Area Woodturners.  Everyone agreed that if the Norfolk City schools are canceled for snow, we will cancel our meeting.

— Discussed DVD rentals.  One member checked out a DVD and paid the monthly fee but hasn’t returned it after two months.  Steve has contacted the member.  We will handle this on a case-by-case basis. Everyone decided not to ask for a deposit at checkout.

— Asked about increasing dues for new members to $35 and keeping existing member dues at $25. Everyone disagreed but will allow Steve to explain when he returns.

Pete:

— Reported that all the excess tools and accessories had been sold.

Jay: (No agenda items)

Amos: (Not present at the board meeting.  Ray presented his agenda items.)

— Reported that he had 17 members registered to go to the AAW symposium.  17 registrations plus 5 spouse registrations plus 8 dinner tickets total $6,465.

Those registered will pay the club on or before March 26 and the club

will forward a check to AAW on April 1, 2019

(The club can accept payments in cash, check or credit card.)  Payments can be taken during the March 26th club meeting.

Chet: (Not present at the board meeting)

Art:

Showed the club a broken Sony camera he had been given to use.  He reported that it could not be repaired. After discussion it was determined that in fact it couldn’t be repaired. Everyone agreed that we should dispose of it.

Scenario:

I bought an old Rockwell lathe. Haven’t used a lathe since high school. The faceplates are reasonably self explanatory, but the rather large and very heavy steel chuck that came with it wasn't that easy to figure out. I tried to mount too big a piece of wood into the chuck. I over "Opened” the jaws, but didn’t know it. The piece seemed to be tightened, so I flipped it on. Major excitement as the 3 metal jaws left the chuck at high speed and the blank flew across the shop.

Advice:

This of course would almost certainly have been a fatal accident if I had been standing in front of the lathe. I later learned the chuck wasn’t even for woodturning. As mentioned in the reports, always stand to the side When mounting a new piece or remounting a piece. And please always wear a face mask. When in doubt stop and ask someone who knows. Every town has a wood club, or the internet.

Scenario:

I had just purchased my new lathe. I was mounting a large log of wet wood on the lathe between centres to find the best balance. Having heaved it up to the lathe and finally pinned it between centres, I turned it by hand to find the heaviest part and moved that to the top so I could let it drop a bit when removing the tailstock centre. I'd forgotten how heavy the piece was. It

dropped and hammered my hand onto the banjo. It hurt, but could have been worse.

Advice:

Don't work with heavy items or any tools, when you're tired.

FACEPLATE SIZE A good rule of thumb for sizing a wood lathe faceplate is to use a faceplate about one-third the diameter of the bowl blank.

FACEPLATE SEATING The faceplate needs to be seated flush to the shoulder of the headstock spindle. If the faceplate won’t seat to the headstock spindle shoulder, use a plastic or nylon lathe washer to fill the gap. This spacer can fill the gap and firmly seat the faceplate to prevent any vibration while turning.

Screw the wood-facing side to solid wood not bark.

SCREW SHAPE Use a screw type with an angled head that fits snuggly in the faceplate recess and hole. It should fill the recessed hole, not move around or stand proud of the recessed area.

SCREW SIZE The screw diameter, between #8 and #12 should easily fit in the hole and not move around.

SCREW LENGTH The screw should protrude approximately seven threads beyond the wood-facing side of the faceplate. More than seven can potentially make damaging holes into the wood that will become the body of the bowl. (Note: Response from the author. The seven thread count being substantial depth for a good hold is knowledge I’ve collected from a couple different experienced turners. And, knock on wood, the practice has not failed me yet.)

SCREW QUALITY Do not use drywall screws. Stainless steel screws with a square driver head make driving and extraction easier.

SCREW OVERALL FIT The obvious inspection: drop a screw in the faceplate screw hole, wiggle it, observe and feel the recess hole and count protruding threads.

#8 – 1-1/2″ to #12 – 2″ square head screws work best for most

faceplates. Also ¼” - 20 if they fit better on bigger faceplates11
