CEO’s Report

As we enter the festive season, I see evidence of the spirit of friendship and community across Bentley Park as many of our clubs and groups enjoy their respective Christmas and end of year celebrations. One of the advantages of being a large campus is the diversity of the social and recreational choices that our residents themselves over the years have introduced to our community. We have exceptional talent and commitment here at Bentley Park that directly contributes to the wonderful lifestyle for which we are renowned.

Our Volunteers are Special People As is our tradition, during the first week of December each year we celebrate International Volunteers Day by acknowledging the extraordinary efforts of our many Volunteers. This year we held a “High Tea” to say “THANK-YOU” to our very special people. In marking this day, I wish to convey my personal thanks to all of our volunteers who go about their business throughout the year making Bentley Park a better place to live. There are so many different roles that our volunteers are engaged in with each person bringing their individual talent, skill and commitment to their work. A number of studies have measured the value to the Australian economy of the time volunteers give doing a wide variety of volunteer jobs. Of course, it is not monetary reward that volunteers are seeking but the desire to contribute to their community.

We appreciate that the services provided by this special group of people are essential to a non-profit organisation such as SwanCare Group and we acknowledge with gratitude the work they do. To us, they are TRULY SPECIAL PEOPLE.

Paying Tribute to Our Long Serving Staff A continuing tradition at SwanCare Group is to also recognise exceptional lengths of service amongst our staff. Around this time each year we recognise those staff who have achieved 10, 20, 25 and yes, even 30 years’ service to our organisation. In a challenging work environment and with the transient nature of today’s modern workforce it is truly an amazing achievement that we can celebrate and recognise service periods of such great length. We pride ourselves as being an employer of choice in the aged care sector, we want to make our employees feel proud of working for SwanCare Group and we try to ensure that they are continually acknowledged and appreciated for their hard work and commitment. When I see lengths of service such as this I get a sense of validation that we must be doing things right. This year we acknowledged 5 staff from our Care Facilities, 3 from Hospitality, and 3 Administration / Maintenance Services. This group achieved a combined total of 180 years service! We are very proud of them.

Social Club Future Directions By now most residents will be aware that the Social Club will be undergoing a “make-over” and transition as it moves into 2012. In last months Tidings I placed an advertisement calling for recruits to express an interest in helping to form a new committee to take over the operation and running of the social club, and all that goes with this, as from January 2012. I am very pleased to say that we received a large number of responses from a very capable, skilled and energetic group

of people, whom I am sure will form a wonderful committee to represent our residents social interests. I will be speaking with this group in detail over the ensuing weeks to discuss their role and responsibilities, such that they can “hit the ground running” as from January next year.

AND ……. Whilst on the subject of the Social Club and all that it entails. Readers are aware that the reason behind the seeking of a new committee as from 2012, is that the previous President Peter Brunt, along with his wife Shirley, have determined that after almost 12 years at the helm, it is finally time for them to hand over the baton. To be honest, I could fill a whole Tidings article and more on the achievements that Peter and Shirley have amassed over their time as presiders over the Social Club. SwanCare Group is indeed indebted to their hard-work and unwavering commitment. By way of a quick snapshot, I have been able to determine that Peter and Shirley, during their time as heads of the Social Club, have organised and arranged over 350 events for residents of Bentley Park – this is over 30 events per year. This is absolutely amazing. In addition to not only organising the events Peter more often than not also undertook the role of MC, and sometimes guest speaker. These 350 events also do not include the various committee meetings, general meetings and AGM’s that they arranged, during their tenure, Peter and Shirley ran approximately 150 of these meetings as well. Peter and Shirley’s work effort is untiring, because as most of us know, in addition to the Social Club, they also coordinated the Opportunity Shop and paper recycling activities. Continued Page 3

The net proceeds generated from these two activities has been allocated back into Bentley Park and over time has contributed close to $200,000, which has gone directly to help fund resident amenities. You could not get two more committed and dedicated volunteer workers who have given so much and made such a difference to SwanCare Group. Both Peter and Shirley

will be the first to admit, as they do, that they could not have done this alone, and indeed they have always had the help of dedicated supporters and committees to assist them in the accomplishment of these extraordinary endeavours. Thus, on behalf of the Board, Administration and all the residents of Bentley Park we say a huge thanks and will forever be grateful to the wonderful commitment that Peter and Shirley Brunt have given to SwanCare Group. In a month where we are celebrating the achievements of volunteers, we have, in Peter and Shirley, two individuals who through their efforts thoroughly deserve the

title of EXTRA Special People. Peter and Shirley, have indicated that they will now look to actually retire, and take time out to relax, maybe travel, but most importantly enjoy some quality time to themselves. And finally …. as this will be the last Tidings for 2011, I wish all residents and friends of Bentley Park a wonderful, safe and relaxing Christmas and New Year. Bentley Park Show Another Great Village Event - This Being Our 6th Year Without the support of our Sponsors, and you the residents of the Village this would not be possible, so THANK YOU for your generousity. The number of exhibits were down this year, but more residents and categories were entered. It was great to see many of our new residents participated and the older residents who again participated. The judges again praised the high standard of the exhibits and the many hours involved to create the entries. The attendance over the two days was 719 and many came from far and wide: England, New South Wales, and Tasmania, Exmouth, Busselton, Bridgetown and right through the metropolitan area. A survey was taken again this year. Thanks must not be forgotten to so many people who have been involved over many months. To SwanCare Group Administration and Maintenance, to my Committee for their valuable assistance especially my 2I/C Cath Devereaux, to all the residents that volunteered their time, doing endless tasks as they came about. CEO’s Report continued...

It is with some regret that I write my last contribution to Tidings as far as my involvement as Social Events Co-ordinator is concerned, it will also be the last time that Shirley has the pleasure of typing same! As you know we have finally decided, after 12 years of doing the job for you, to retire, hand over the job to others, and have some time for ourselves – the events covered in these notes will be our last.

Events Past On Friday November 4th we had our monthly Stratton Fish & Chips Luncheon and Concert, entertainment provided by vocalist Brett Nosworthy. Brett gave another enjoyable performance of song and fun in his own inimitable style. Regretfully the Auditorium Concert scheduled for Sunday 20th November had at the last moment to be cancelled due to singer Eddie Storm’s serious illness. This was to have been my 122 Auditorium Concert, so unfortunately I will have to sign off at 121. Next we arranged for a Special Fish & Chips Luncheon in December at the Stratton Centre for the 2nd Friday - (9th December). It will be a Christmas theme event with Christmas fare added to the usual catering, the entertainment will be vocalist Adam Penn, singing Christmas songs and carols to us and with us. This is certainly booking fast. We then got down to work, planning and buying for our two festive season events – the Christmas Show, Carols by Torchlight with Christmas supper and drinks on Friday 16th December and the New Year’s Eve Party on Saturday 31st December. Tickets for the former will be available from admin counter from Monday 5th December, these are free of charge, the tickets are just so we know how many will be attending for catering purposes. The show runs from 7:00pm – 9:00pm, bus will pick up from 6:30pm. Tickets for the New Year’s Eve Party will be available from Shirley at the Auditorium on Wednesday 7th December at 8:30am and afterwards at the Admin counter, book your seat and table early so you don’t miss out. Watch notice boards for details of these events, you will also receive a letter-box flyer – we look forward to your support and attendance to both.

Opportunity Shop As previously reported the Op Shop, thanks to its team of volunteer workers has had a good year of trading and raising monies for the village, it’s Trust Fund has a good balance at present. We are expending quite a deal of this money over the next few weeks and will still have a substantial amount of funds for when the shop re-opens after its annual seasonal

closure period from Wednesday 14th December to Wednesday 4th January 2012. Among the donations recently made were:- $2000 to the SwanMobile Appeal, ( Events Office also donated $2000) $1000 to the Library for new books. $1000 to Waminda for residents entertainment $2000 towards the cost of the proposed outdoor fixed BBQ $500 to support the art Group $300 to the SouthCare Christmas Appeal (along with donated grocery items) We cannot stress too strongly the value of the Opportunity Shop Trust Account and our appreciation of the volunteers who raise the money and the residents whose custom they enjoy. During the 10 years that I have managed the Fund, over $160,000 has been raised and spent on Village facilities, services and equipment. It has given them and us great pleasure and satisfaction. The Re-cycling Project, newspapers and cans, has also been a good source of revenue for the village, raising over $2500

per annum, spent on Village activities. The work of its volunteers is also acknowledged and much appreciated. Although I am fully retiring from my role as Social Events Co-ordinator, I was asked and reluctantly agreed to continue to be responsible for the Opportunity Shop and Recycling activities. However, the group which is evidently intending to fill my role, claiming support from the groundswell(?) of village opinion, have asked that I relinquish the responsibility for these activities. I have therefore decided to do so and will not be involved either in the Op. Shop or recycling project in the New Year. To be honest, I am a little relieved to do so as I will be able to fully enjoy actual retirement. We thank all of those loyal supporters and friends who have indicated their appreciation for what we have done over the past 12 years. I close by us wishing you all the compliments of the season. New Residents Our community extends a warm welcome to Ms S Clegg, Mr K Simmons, Mr & Mrs Simmons and Mr Abrahams.

Congratulations! SwanCare Group Volunteer Bus Drivers are required to undertake annual bus driving assessments.

This year an assessor from the RAC Driving Centre conducted the assessments and I am very pleased to report that our drivers did exceptionally well and have been deemed ‘Competent Medium Rigid Vehicle Drivers’ (medium rigid includes village bus).

The assessments took place in our Village bus and the drivers were required to drive through the City, up to Kings Park and return. Driving through the City is no mean feat these days and to do it, in a bus, in the rain (for some drivers) and then pass with flying colours, was a good test for our drivers and they did extremely well.

So, well done and congratulations to our Volunteer Bus Drivers and of course, thank you for all that you do.

A Different Kind of Christmas by Reg Gooch In the early years, Christmas is, and should

rightly be, a wonderful time. Children are born with imagination, and should always be encouraged to use it. Towards this end, Father Christmas and the Easter Bunny can be put to good use in allowing children to develop their imaginations. After all is said and done; they will have time enough to learn about the realities of life later on. Looking backwards now, I see that the old style Christmas that excited us as kids has long gone. No doubt it had to end because of the advances in technology, and the so called psychological changes to the way parents are allowed to raise their children. Childhood as our generations knew it has finished. What was once deemed to be the best years of your life no longer exists; and this I personally think is a pity because it deprives the child of so much that can be wonderful. In Europe, although I can only talk of England, the season began at a sensible time in advance of the actual twelve days, and this was considered enough to promote the approach of the festivities. Now it is begun well in advance to suit the supermarkets and traders, who have no real interest in childish imagination. In the schools the learning and practices of singing carols was normally the first step toward awakening pupils that the holiday was drawing near. Then at about these times, there would be secretive talks between Mum and Dad that somehow kids knew were matters related to the great days to come. The evenings were already dark just after four-o’clock in the afternoons making it possible to do a little window shopping on the way home from school. Doing so allowed kids to look at the displays of Santa’s and Reindeers, although these were not as realistic as they are today. The windows revealed all the toys and foods that could be bought if your parents had the means to buy

them; and to dream of what might be. Most of us however knew that such things were too expensive; but remember that dreams can awaken imagination. Near enough to the fifteenth of December, the Christmas Markets would begin in the Portobello Road district and at other markets in and around where we lived. Coloured light and music were added to the frenzy of the market traders shouted offers; but that was a part of the fun of shopping and often encouraged people to spend more than they meant to. Sometimes in the evenings a mother would take the kids to help carry the goods, and sometimes, mostly on a Saturday because of his work a father would do this. Then it was a search for bargains in fruits and nuts or if the money was available even a chicken or leg of pork to be made into a ham. Toy stalls were usually religiously avoided, although as kids grew older they realised that this was deliberately done to add to the surprise that would come from the pillow case on Christmas morning. Turkey in those days was not normally a part of the menu for working folk. About a week before the day, the cooking at home would begin. The cake of course would have been made back in October and carefully wrapped in greaseproof paper to mature. Now it was produced from its hiding place and unwrapped; and egg whites and icing sugar beaten into royal icing to cover it. Sugar ‘Merry Christmas’ and ‘Santa Claus’ motifs, gold and silver Dragees and other decorations saved from previous years, or sometimes bought new if necessary, were added. After this it was placed on its stand in a position of honour in the front room, to be looked at but not to be touched, until the teatime on Christmas day. Mince pies and pastry items were made and baked, and then when cool enough placed carefully into a tin and put on a high shelf in the larder to await the proper time. Mind you, most mothers would accidently manage to break one, and distribute the pieces among the kids as tasters; what a treat it seemed to us.

The Yuletide Log had to be decorated. A chocolate Swiss Roll was cut at an angle that would form the trunk and branch. The whole thing was then smothered thickly in chocolate butter-cream. The prongs of a fork or big comb were used to make the pattern of bark in the cream with sometimes a green marzipan holly leaf with red marzipan berries added. It was placed upon a cake board covered in silver foil to set. When it was completed it joined the cake in the front room. As the fire was never normally used except on special occasions it was cold enough to keep things safely until they were used. When this stage was reached it would be time to make and hang the paper chain decorations. In those days most kids in our group used to make the decorations from coloured paper strips glued and joined in rings with a paste made from flour and water boiled until a sticky mess. Kids got a lot of fun in helping to do this decorating, it was a sign that Christmas was really nearly here. Some of the more fancy and professional items purchased in the shops were kept from year to year by parents. All this activity added to the excitement and wonder that was the old fashioned Christmas. If there was a garden, most parents would have kept a good stalk of Brussels’ Sprouts or a Savoy Cabbage and particularly some really well frosted Parsnips to be used in the festive day dinner. The potatoes would always be King Edwards, and in those days dinner was served at three o’clock in the afternoon to give the menfolk time to get back from the pub. It was still more or less a Patriarchal Society; how things change? Most of us got near enough what presents we had wished for; if it was within the parents’ means. But sometimes in those now far away days presents meant new clothes rather than toys. If the family could afford a bottle or two of wine or beer, it added to the pleasure for adults in the final hours of Christmas Eve. Oh yes, compared with today it was a different kind of Christmas.

Residents Advisory Council - Brian Dale

Note from VRAC Coffee Meeting 15th November 2011 (76 People) New council members Shirley Barnes and Tom Brazier were introduced and it was announced that office-bearers for the next 12 months were unchanged. Brian Dale would continue as Chairman, with Carolyn Wellstead as Vice-chairperson and Board Representative. The meeting was advised by the Swanmobile Coordinator, Carolyn Wellstead, that the Swanmobile appeal was proceeding very well and it was now expected that our target would be reached. SwanCare Board Members have been given a schedule of Residents Coffee Meeting dates for 2012 with a permanent invitation to attend when convenient. A resident had earlier phoned to express concern regarding the notice in the November Tidings that maintenance staff would not be shifting furniture in the future. The resident then expanded on her concerns, saying that she felt that SwanCare was going back on promises made in the past when people came to reside at Bentley Park. She felt that, with proper training, maintenance staff could continue to shift furniture without injury. She also raised the issue of the security staff not being able to lift residents who had fallen during the evening/weekend, saying that she felt that we should be able to find a security firm who were prepared to do this. Our ‘last-minute’ replacement Guest Speaker, Retirement Living Manager, Natalie Hodi, elected to respond.

(Kym Werner was unable to attend due to operational requirements. He has volunteered to be re-scheduled early next year). Natalie briefly outlined her duties, which cover being responsible for independent living areas in Bentley Park, Carlisle and Australind. Because she was often away from her desk, she apologized to residents for sometimes being a little tardy in returning phone calls but assured them that their concerns would be met as soon as possible. She then went on to address the issue of shifting furniture, advising that due to Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, SwanCare were responsible for ensuring the wellbeing of staff. She said that a restriction of lifting no more than 10kg had been put in place and this excluded most heavy furniture. In addition, this service was NOT included in their schedule of duties, as they were kept well occupied in normal maintenance duties which she agreed to outline in an issue of Tidings. When the topic of changing light bulbs was raised by a resident, she said that this was included in normal duties – residents would be charged for the bulbs but the maintenance staff would continue to fit them. She also advised that the practice of leaving furniture in vacated units “as a donation to the Op Shop” would no longer be acceptable. If units were not properly cleaned out, a charge would be made for disposal of the furniture. Natalie then went on to discuss the matter of lifting people who had fallen. Wilson Security, our security contractor, had advised SwanCare that they would not be doing this in future, as standard procedure in First Aid was NOT to lift the patient, due to the possibilities of fractures or internal bleeding. Wilson Security will no longer take this risk so, if a family member was not able or willing to provide assistance, an ambulance would be called. (Note: Resident Support Services - Maxene and Leasa - have since issued a notice addressing this issue and confirming the action to be taken).

A resident then advised Natalie that many people had been in the village for some considerable time and that past management had made promises that had been eroded over the years. He said that he was aware that many legislative changes had occurred but felt that SwanCare was remiss in failing to advise residents of the impact of these changes, thereby creating avoidable discontent. Natalie agreed that residents should be kept informed in the future. Natalie invited Residents to attend the open day at Carlisle on 17th November and stated that sales interest at Bentley Park was still strong, with half of the villas currently under construction under offer. Earlier a resident stated that the gardeners were still causing damage to the lawn on the slope of Adie Court with equipment – to be referred to management. With no further questions, Brian thanked Natalie for her attendance, and went on to express thanks to June and Jean who have assisted in the kitchen during the past year. He presented them with a token of appreciation for this effort. Brian advised that the next meeting would be in January, with CEO Graham Francis as the guest speaker. Christmas by Barbara Ryder

The old man had lived in the same house for more than fifty years. He and his wife had raised a family there and it had been a happy home. As time passed, the children grew

up, married and moved away. Then, as even more time passed, all the children and their families moved farther away because of job opportunities or commitments and contact was only by telephone or an occasional letter or card for birthdays and Christmas. Then fate dealt the old man a severe blow when his wife passed away very suddenly. It took a long while for the old man to recover from his sad loss but he had good friends and neighbours who did all they could to help him at that time. More time passed and the old man was too tired to tend his large garden properly and he began to neglect his diet. A neighbour noticed his decline and contacted his children. One of them came to see the old man and made arrangements for him to move into a small unit in a retirement village. This, of course, meant that the old man had

to leave the home where he had so many years of happy memories and he also left his neighbours who had cared for him so well, especially after his wife left this world. So now he sat by himself in a strange unit in a strange environment where he knew noone. It was Christmas Eve but he had not made any effort to celebrate the birth of Christ. He was completely on his own so what was the point? He went to bed feeling tired and dispirited. On Christmas morning he listened to the joyful carols on the radio but he felt very sad and lonely. If you are reading this you are probably wondering about the ending. I have described a real life scenario and there are three obvious ways in which to finish. First -- the old man’s far flung family pay him a surprise visit, laden with gifts. Second - his new neighbor’s call in to wish him Happy Christmas, with the hope that he will enjoy his new home. Third - the old man is ignored by everyone and spends the whole of the Festive Season alone. In real life, the ending is up to each of us. Here’s hoping that every resident at Bentley Park enjoys the forthcoming season of Peace and Joy and Goodwill to all Men.

Our final outing for the year was to Kalamunda to see “Snow White & the seven Dwarf’s”. This was a very entertaining night for young & old, children can always steal the show. Again one of our group won a raffle prize and many scored a chocolate. The chicken & chips were enjoyed by all, freshly cooked. All residents of the village are welcome to join the Club. Undercroft Bowling Club Our last meeting for the year will be 5th December - how time has flown. We donated $250 towards the SwanMobile, we must note how generous various Clubs and people have been to arrive at such a total! We are all going to benefit. We have a lovely clean tea room, now that vinyl has replaced the old carpet. Thank you to our CEO. In January we are celebrating our Ruby (40th) Anniversary with a big party at the Stratton Centre for members only. Paid for by the Club. SWAN BOWLING CLUB Another month has gone and Christmas almost upon us. November was a busy month for the Club - a great game against Admin on Wednesday 2nd November. Photos of the day’s activities are on display at Admin – check them out. Come and join the fellowship after play on Wednesday afternoons. This innovation has been enjoyed by those attending – light refreshments available. This activity will continue after night bowls on Wednesday evenings. Hope to see more members enjoying the socialising. By the time you read this note our Christmas Social will have been held on Saturday 3rd December. I hope that those who attend had an enjoyable evening. Our fabulous annual Christmas raffle is up and running with 4 great prizes. Tickets are a $1.00 each. The raffle will be drawn on Saturday 17th December at the Leisure Centre – at 10:00am. Come along and witness the draw. There will be free morning tea available from 9:30am. Our morning teas start on Thursday 12th January 2012 and we can let you know what is happening in the New Year. Bring a plate – a friend and $1.00 entry fee – there will be a door prize. The Computer Club will be closed for Christmas and New Year holidays from Friday 23th December 2011 at 11.00am til Tuesday 3rd January 2012 normal starting time 9.00am. The Annual AGM will be held in the coffee lounge 2nd floor Administration building on Monday 16th January 2012 at 6.30pm for membership subscription payments with a 7.00pm start of the meeting. The Writer’s Group We are a group of friends who write for our own pleasure. We meet to share our work and our ideas, and to offer suggestions to fellow members in a non-critical way that helps to improve their work. Most members write about their memories from years ago, and some write parts of their life stories. Some interesting discussions are had following the reading of the work. We meet each fortnight on Thursday mornings at 9.30 am in the Handicraft Room on the second floor of the Administration Building. One or two new members would be welcome; there are no fees, all you need to do is to bring a piece of your writing to read. Anyone interested would be welcome to come and listen to the readings before deciding to join us. The meeting for December will be on Thursdays 8th at 09.30 am. Kingia/Tandara High Care Auxil iary At our final meeting for the year on 25 October, 2011, we were visited by Mr. Barry Brown, Managing Director of Villa Carlotta Travel, who spoke of the family business origins in Western Australia, and briefly outlined some of their current tours at home and abroad. This was followed by the Annual General Meeting of the Auxiliary, when our special guest to chair the meeting was Karen Parker, Executive Assistant at Swan Care Group Administration. As is customary, all Executive Committee members retired and a new Committee was elected as: Carol Greenaway President Pat Wells Assistant to President Caroline Wellstead Secretary Frankie Comstive Treasurer Lorraine Pittaway Outings Officer The meeting was officially closed a 2.15 p.m. We then enjoyed afternoon tea provided by Villa Carlotta. The Annual FETE held on 7th November was a success to the tune of $941, which included $182 for the special raffle of a painting donated by Pat Sundstrom and won by Beverley Howard. At the Auxiliary meeting on 25 October it was overwhelmingly agreed that we should donate $1000 to the Swanmobile appeal, and this money has now been paid. I would like to thank, again, all our residents who came, saw and bought, and in particular those Auxiliary members behind the scenes, and behind the tables, who all worked so hard to make it a successful morning. The Snooker Players Association The Snooker Players Association is situated on the second (Social) floor of the Administration Building. Playing sessions are held Monday to Friday from 1–3pm. SwanCare Recipe Book My mother was a top notch cook who produced tasty but economic meals with the aid of a couple of cookbooks. When I was a child there wasn’t the range of books and magazines on cooking as there is today, and the average household boasted of probably one or two cookbooks at the most. My mother used the CWA Cookbook almost exclusively until I was a teenager when she was given the Golden Wattle Cookbook. The CWA Cookbook consisted of recipes, household hints and general cooking information submitted mostly by CWA members. With the big population of excellent cooks in this village, perhaps we should have our own cookbook based on “tried and true” family recipes that have stood the test of time. I know my wife still uses a meat loaf recipe handed down to her from her mother some 50 years ago that is still a family favourite, and I am sure there are a lot of other recipes out there of similar ilk.
