From Your Clergy

us a yearly reminder to reaffirm our commit-

ment to the covenant with God. Our Biblical

tradition, on the other hand, tells us this holiday

is known as Chag HaBikkurim, the Festival of

the First Fruits. Bikkurim are the offering of

the first fruits of the harvest season, a gift to

express gratitude to God for the food we eat

and the land that provides that food. The farmers in the

Land of Israel would bring a variety of the Seven Species

from their fields in baskets adorned with flowers and flock

to the Temple in Jerusalem to offer the first fruits during this

time of year. As consistent with our pilgrimage festivals,

this tradition was tied directly to the agricultural cycle

of the land, and a true sign of spring.

There is a beautiful Midrash that combines the Rabbinic and

Biblical understanding of Shavuot. We are taught that when

God gave Torah to the Israelites at Mount Sinai, the entire

mountain bloomed with flowers and trees in anticipation

of this moment of revelation. It is as if the only way that we

were ready and prepared to receive Torah, and become a

new collective People of Israel, was if we were supported

and surrounded by a rebirth of spring.

As the farmers in ancient Israel brought these bikkurim – the

first fruits – to the temple to express their abundant gratitude

for the season’s harvest, we also have an abundant gratitude

for the revival of our own spring. May this season be a

reward for our perseverance. One that provides us much

needed rebirth and renewal, for ourselves and our world.

Each year around this time, I anxiously await

the springtime weather. After a long winter,

I look forward to when I can take an evening

run outside because the sun has not yet set,

see the trees come more alive with each passing

day, and swap out my boots for sandals -

signs that summer is right around the corner.

This year, these warmer days are more precious than ever,

as we have eagerly anticipated this shift for a much larger

purpose. Along with the added protective layer that vaccines

gift us, the weather allows us to reunite with family and

friends in a return to a semblance of normalcy. The warm air

lets us take a deep breath coming off a winter where we

demonstrated a collective perseverance in which staying

home was not just for the purposes of staying warm, but

was necessary in order to keep us safe.

At the same time, we don’t just see people re-emerging, we

see spring coming alive. Around each corner there are new

expressions of life in nature reviving themselves, with

beautiful flowers blossoming and trees regaining their color

and strength. The energy and calm beauty evokes feelings

of joy and awe. Each flower symbolizes a reward for our

diligence and a fresh perspective. There is a sense that we

truly are springing forward to a new chapter.

In just a few weeks, we are approaching the festival of

Shavuot. Our Rabbinic tradition teaches that Shavuot is the

time in our Jewish calendar in which we commemorate the

receiving of Torah and revelation at Mount Sinai, allowing

The Jewish value of hatmadah, perseverance, is about stayingon task and not giving up. When you dial up your perse-verance, you keep trying in spite of obstacles. Our Jewishtradition asserts that the patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac, andJacob, would never have succeeded in entering a covenantbetween God and the Jewish people had it not been for theirextraordinary hatmadah. Perseverance is anchored in hope;and hope is rooted in the belief that things will get better.Looking back at the last few months, our Religious Educationfaculty, staff and students really dialed up their perseverance! The winter weather moved most of our teaching and learningfrom the beautiful and spacious outdoor learning center toZoom. Separated by screens, our teachers continued to buildrelationships with and among students, and our clergyand education team created sacred space during our weeklyvirtual tefillah. It wasn’t easy to be apart from each other andcontinue the work of engaging our learners in meaningfulJewish experiences. And still, we looked forward to thewarmer months that we knew would be right around the

We made it through a Zoom Winter“A righteous person can fall seven times and rise.” -Proverbs 24:16

A fun way to teach your children about perseverance is with this heartwarming story about Brontorina. She is a loveable apatosaurus who knows in her heart that she will make her dream ofbecoming a ballet dancer a reality. Brontorina never gives up, always looks forward, and keeps hopein her heart. Written by James Howe, this story teaches us about the importance of perseverance.

corner. We awaited the reopening of our outdoor learningspaces, and got really creative when mountains of snowmelted, leaving our outdoor learning center unready for ourreturn. It’s been an amazing start to spring as we welcomedstudents back on-site and the ruach, spirit, can be felt in theair. This is a testament to the incredible flexibility and resilienceof our faculty, and the unwavering commitment of the TBJ family to Jewish learning and engagement. As we continue to look forward with hope, we will markthe end of this extraordinary year with song and celebrationon Sunday, May 16. On this day we will celebrate a year of teaching and learning and honor all students who havestarted their formal Jewish learning journey in a most unprecedented time. Save the date and watch your email as well as the REC Family Engagement Newsletter for more information. Kgn – 12th grade enrollment for Fall of ’21 will be openthis spring. Don’t miss your opportunity to join the fun!

Working with children has always been a passion of hers asshe was a staff member at the URJ, Olin-Sang-Ruby Union Institute for seven years and was a camper

appreciate and acknowledge all that Jess has done for our students, their families, and the faculty

and staff of our Religious Education Center. We wish her well as she moves on to her next adventure.

Family Programming at TBJ continues to offer a unique way to bring the com-munity together. In March, Kindergartenthrough 4th grade families joined overZoom for an original Challah BakingShabbat experience. From the comfort of their own kitchens, families joinedVanessa Harper from Lech Lechallah asshe provided hands-on instruction formaking challah dough. Vanessa also incorporated elements of Jewish history

into her teaching. We brought in Shabbattogether. It was wonderful to see so manysmiling faces.

In addition, there was a second ‘TikkunOlam at Home’ program for 3rd through6th grade families. To begin the program, families learned about the difference between food insecurity and hunger. Whilelistening to music, families made a varietyof dishes from macaroni and cheese, ziti, roasted vegetables to desserts and more

that were then delivered to the Urban Renewal Corp. in Newark the same day.The shelter appreciated the generosity ofour TBJ community. We thank you all foryour participation. Stay tuned for moreShabbat and outdoor Family Programmingin the warm months ahead.

Welcome & Farewell

Please join us on Friday May 21st at 5:30pm for a service in which we will honor Jenna and her time with TBJ.

Gabe Snyder is a rising fourth year cantorial student at the Debbie Friedman School of Sacred Music atHebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. Since returning from the Year in Israel — HUC-JIR’srequisite year of study in Jerusalem — Gabe has served as the student cantor at Hevreh of SouthernBerkshire in Great Barrington, MA. Prior to cantorial school, Gabe earned his BA in Religious Studies at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY. While at Skidmore, Gabe participated in a wide variety ofmusical activities including Skidmore’s Community Chorus, Vocal Chamber Ensemble, and Opera Workshop, along with strong involvement and leadership in Hillel. Gabe grew up immersed in strongand vibrant Reform Jewish communities in the Boston area, including Temple Beth Elohim in Wellesley,Eisner Camp, and NFTY-Northeast. When not in school, Gabe can often be found teaching or b’nai mitzvah tutoring. Gabeis thrilled to serve the Congregation B’nai Jeshurun community as the Student Cantor.

Congregation B’nai Jeshurun has a long history of working with cantorial and rabbinic interns from the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. We are proud to be among the institutions that help to cultivate the future leaders of the Reform movement. This coming academic year, we are excited to welcome a new student intern to our clergy team.

Pennie Cordobes, after thirty years of service to B’nai Jeshurun, will be retiring at the end of June. It feels unfair to try to put down in a few words what Pennie has meant to our congregation. She hasserved as the clergy executive assistant to Rabbis Greene, Groffman and Gewirtz; and because of the pandemic, literally took responsibility for the entire clergy team over the past eighteen months. Indeed, she was to retire last year, but refused to leave us hanging while in acute crisis.

This last act of service sums Pennie up best. Besides the fact that she has incredible administrative acumen, she is absolutely the most loyal, devoted, ethical and generous person with whom I have

worked in my life. Over her three decades at TBJ, Pennie has served as the frontline for every solitary joyous and painfulevent in the cycles of our members’ lives. She picks up the phone with utter sensitivity and love to tears of joy and pain. She doesn’t simply arrange logistics, but she is the first to offer her shoulder to both lift and comfort. More, our communityhas come to have utter trust in her because she understands the precious and vital nature of confidentiality. Like you, myfamily intrinsically trusts her with our most personal information.

No one will be able to replace Pennie. Because there is no one like Pennie Cordobes. She has done nothing less than God’swork. On behalf of the entire congregation, thank you, Pennie. We wish you, Steve, your children and grandchildren thebest of everything.

– Rabbi Matthew D. Gewirtz

This also means that we will be saying farewell at the end of this year to our current cantorial intern,Jenna Mark. Jenna has served the TBJ community with leadership, talent and grace for the past threeyears. We will miss her dearly and wish her the best of luck in what we know will be a long and successful career.
