This Week's Torah Portion in a Nutshell: Sh'lachNumbers Triennial Reading:(1) 13:1-3 pg. 840(2) 13:4-16 pg. 840-841(3) 13:17-20 pg. 841-842(4) 13:21-24 pg. 842(5) 13:25-30 pg. 843-844(6) 13:31-33 pg. 844(7) 14:1-7 pg. 844-845Maftir: 14:5-7 pg. 845Haftarah: Joshua 2:1-24 pg. 857-859

This week's parashah relays the story of the 12 spies (one from each Tribe) Moses sent to spy in the land of Canaan for 40 days. The spies returned with a unanimous report of a good and prosperous land. But 10 of the spies reported heavy fortification and certain defeat should they attempt a conquest. Only two insisted Israel could succeed in taking Canaan if they would have faith in God. A disappointed Moses pleaded with God to forgive the people and God obliged. But the consequence of their doubt was God's decree that the adult generation would never enter Canaan, only the next generation. When the Israelites heard this, they had a change of heart and went forward with their conquest, despite Moses warning that it was too late and they would surely be defeated.
