Formally known as Musical.ly and Live.ly, TikTok is a free social media platform owned by ByteDance, a Beijing-based company founded in 2012 by Zhang Yiming. It is used to create short lip-sync, comedy and talent videos.

TikTok rules require the user to be 13yrs or older to use it and if you’re under 18yrs, parental consent is needed. You are able to watch other user’s streams and videos but this means you may be exposed to inappropriate content.

Snapchat (required age, 13yrs) is a fast way used to share photos, messages and short videos with friends and family. The person sending the photo or video can decide how long their friends can view it for. Snapchat opens right to the camera so a ‘snap’ can be sent in seconds and can be customised with stickers, text, bitmojis and filters.

If the content is sent directly, it will disappear as soon as it is viewed but if a user uploads the content to their story, it remains there for 24 hours. Please be aware that Snapchatters can always capture or save your messages by taking a screenshot using a camera or otherwise so be mindful of what you ‘snap’!

Kik is a controversial messaging app popular with children and young people. When the Ineqe Safeguarding Group (www.ineqe.com) carried out research on their routine reviews, product and online testing, they found that it appears to be an app for inappropriate behaviour.

Under their Terms of Service, Kik state that users must be 13+, however, there are no privacy controls in place at all - in fact anyone can search for a username and send them a message.

Ask.fm has a ‘Stream’ where recent questions and answers are highlighted and shared with other users. You can opt out of the ‘Stream’ to reduce the likelihood of receiving any unwanted contact from people you don’t know. You can opt out in the ‘Privacy settings area by checking the box under the heading ‘Stream.’
